November 6, 1946 – September 28, 2010

Former Sheridan resident, Dennis C. Gillett passed away at his home in Reno, NV on September 28, 2010. Mr. Gillett was born in Long Beach, CA in 1946. He graduated from the University of California - Santa Cruz and was branch manager for Transamerica Corporation in Sheridan Wyoming from 1977 - 1983 and in Santa Barbara, CA from 1983 - 1990. He is survived by his father, Clifford Gillett of Reno, NV, a brother, Craig Gillett of Fallon, NV and a son, Drew Gillett of Denver, CO.

Caroline J. “Carrie” Schwartz
June 8, 1943 – October 4, 2010

Caroline J. “Carrie” Schwartz, 67, of Sheridan, WY died Monday, October 4, 2010, in Billings Clinic, Billings, MT. Carrie was born June 8, 1943, in Sheridan to Tobias Lee & Rose (Gonzales) Zamora. Carrie grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. She married Jack Miech on August 10, 1963, in Sheridan. They divorced in 1982. She worked as a CNA at Memorial Hospital for about 20 years. Carrie married John Schwartz on June 8, 2002. She was a cook at Sheridan College, Beckton Stock Farm and then at Westview Health Care Center for twelve years until the present time. Carrie had a passion for cooking, always had an extra plate at the table and loved to entertain. She enjoyed her home, gardening, her cat and making trips to Deadwood. Carrie was very proud of her children and grandchildren. Carrie was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Konni; three brothers Joe, Tobias & Johnny; and grandson Dustin Farman. Carrie is survived by her husband John Schwartz of Sheridan; sons Ronni Miech and Lonni (Carol) Miech of Sheridan; daughter Jonni (Stacy) Lahn of Sheridan; sisters Faye VanEe of Pella, IA and Dee Habeck of Sheridan; grandchildren Cody Miech, Felicia and Kaela Lahn; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be 2:00pm on Saturday (Oct. 9th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials may benefit the Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 E. Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Dorothy Faye Rohla
May 25, 1929 – October 5, 2010

Dorothy Faye Rohla, 81, of Sheridan passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at the Westview Healthcare Center.
Dorothy was born on May 25, 1929 in Scotland, SD to Mary (Plachek) and Joseph Novak. She attended school in Tyndall, SD and graduated from Tyndall High School in 1947. She attended Southern Normal Teachers College and taught school in Bon Homme County for two years. She married William (Bud) Rohla Jr. on June 7th 1948. They had two daughters. They moved to Webster, SD in 1956 where they remained until 1981. Dorothy enjoyed people and loved to work. She was employed by the South Dakota Department of Game and Fish in Webster from 1964 to 1981. After they moved to Sheridan in 1981, she worked for Hospital Pharmacy until 2008. Dorothy’s love of her family and grandchildren were most important to her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and lover of animals. She enjoyed golf, card games, reading, gardening, working, occasional trips to Deadwood, and attending her grandchildren’s activities. Mom, "Grandma Dot" will be greatly missed. Dorothy is survived by her husband, daughters; Lynette Newell (Craig) of Okoboji, IA; Renee Meyer (Joe) of Sheridan. Her grandchildren; Barrett Newell Tritle (Nate ) of Flagstaff, AZ; Alyssa Newell Granquist (Aaron)of Iowa City, IA; Christopher Meyer (Tonja) of Sheridan; Brandon Newell of Minneapolis, MN; Matthew Meyer of Sheridan and her great grandchildren, Samuel, Layne Tritle of Flagstaff, AZ; Sydney, William Granquist of Iowa City, IA; and Emma Meyer of Sheridan. A Rosary for Dorothy will be held on Friday, October 8, 2010 at 7:00 pm at Kane Funeral Home with Deacon Joe Kristufek officiating. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 10:00 am at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Jim Heizer officiating. Private family Inurnment will take place at the Sheridan Elks Memorial cemetery. A reception will follow immediately at the Parish Hall. Thomas Cecil Martin
April 9, 1927 – October 3, 2010

Longtime resident Thomas Cecil Martin passed to a better place October 3, 2010, at Sheridan Manor in Sheridan, Wyoming. He was 83 years old and had been ill for a couple of months. Thomas was born at the Weston Store April 9, 1927. His Father & Mother Cecil & Helen were caught in a Blizzard and he was delivered by Mrs. Lucas at the old Weston Store. Thomas grew up on his dad’s homestead 50 miles North of Gillette with a large family of 5 brothers & 1 sister. He went to grade school at Lower Olmstead and graduated from Campbell County High School. He worked on the homestead when he was younger. At the age of 12, he fell on some ice and bruised his hip and infection ate part of his ball and socket out and limped most of his life. Thomas was an excellent shooter with both a rifle and a pistol; he could shoot marbles out of the air all day long. He and his brothers went to many fast draw contests and his record still stands as Wyoming State Champion. Thomas & his brothers had a Country Band & played for many country dances for Biddle, Mont. to Recluse & Gillette in the late 50’s early 60’s. He went to work running heavy equipment for Leon White, a neighbor on Little Powder River in the late 40’s and that was the trade for the rest of his life. He was probably the best blade operator that ever lived. He worked many construction jobs all over the state of Wyoming then went to Alaska in 1963. He then worked in Alaska for many years and throughout all of the Alaska Pipe Line. After retiring in Sheridan, Thomas fished every day for the rest of his life. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents Cecil & Helen, brothers Zane and Stanley and sister Patsy. He is survived by his brothers Dade of Las Vegas, Dale of Sheridan & Johnie Joe of Gillette. He will long be remembered and loved by his family and friends. And we know he is with JESUS.

Nancy M. Ackerley
April 9, 1962 – September 29, 2010

Nancy M. Ackerley, 48, of Sheridan passed away on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at the Westview Healthcare Center. Nancy was born April 9, 1962, to Jean Tozier Arzy and Albert George Ackerley in Las Vegas, Nevada. She loved spending time with her family, friends, and her two dogs. She enjoyed country music, collecting moose items, dream catchers, liked motorcycles, and computers. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge, and the Multiple Sclerosis Clubs. She is preceded in death by her brother Ken Bridwell, grandfather George Tozier, and step sister Donna Taylor. She is survived by her parents, Jean and George Arzy of Sheridan, Albert Ackerley, of Carlin, NV, grandmother Juanita Tozier of Sheridan, brother Allen (Leona) Ackerley of Sheridan, step sisters, Brenda (Heath) Smith of Sheridan, Linda (Rory) O'Toole of Yucca Valley, CA, step brothers, Larry (Helen) Townsend, of Sheridan, Bob (Sharon) Craft, of Sheridan, her “Outstanding Friend” Dorothy Reed, of Sheridan, Uncles, Ronnie (Vickie) Tozier, Custer, S.D., Edward (Jacque) Tozier, Las Vegas, NV, Jimmy Tozier, St. George, UT, Ray Arzy of Sheridan, Aunts, Judy Tozier, Las Vegas, NV, Frances Miech, Sheridan, Florence (John) Young, Kirby MT, Nellie Wolfe, of Texas, numerous nieces and nephews, and all her many, many dear friends. A Celebration of Life for Nancy will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at the Big Horn Mountain Eagles, 1760 Commercial Avenue in Sheridan, with Reverend Kevin Jones officiating. Funeral services for Sharon Haskin, 66 year old Buffalo resident who passed away Monday at the Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo, will be held Friday, October 8th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Buffalo with Father Cliff Moore officiating. Private family interment will be in Willow Grove cemetery. Richard P. Schneck, Sr.
April 10, 1956 – October 1, 2010

Richard P. Schneck, Sr, 54, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, October 1, 2010 in St. Vincent’s Health Care in Billings, Montana. Mr. Schneck was born April 10, 1956 in Allentown, Pennsylvania to Elroy and Grace (Warren) Schneck. He grew up and attended schools in Allentown, Pennsylvania and Tecumseh, Kansas. Richard served in the United States Air Force from August, 1973 through December, 1974. He then served in the United States Army from December 1974 through July, 1987. During his years of service, Richard was an infantryman and Drill Sergeant and was a recipient of the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, 3rd Award, the NCO Professional Development Ribbon with number 2, the Overseas Service Ribbon with number 2, and the Expert Marksmanship Badge Rifle, M-16. Mr. Schneck enjoyed stamp collecting, puzzles, the computer, and video games. He was preceded in death by his father, Leroy Schneck. Richard is survived by his wife, Donna L. Schneck, of Sheridan, WY; his mother, Grace Schneck, of Allentown, PA; one son, Richard Paul Schneck, Jr., of Sheridan, WY; three daughters, Ann M. Gooding, Sheridan, WY, Jennifer Gooding, Dudley, NC, and Grace C. Breckenridge, of TX; two brothers, James Schneck, of FL, and Thomas Schneck, of ME; three sisters, Linda Kuhns, and Sandra Herman, both of Allentown, PA, and Deborah Schell, of Fleetwood, PA; and 8 grandchildren. Visitation for Mr. Schneck will be from 5:00 P. M. to 7:00 P. M. Friday, October 8, 2010 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 11:00 A. M. Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Phil Wold officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Jacob Anthony Burnett
November 21, 1979 – October 2, 2010

Jacob Anthony Burnett went home to his Heavenly Father on Saturday evening, October 2, 2010 at Wyoming Medical Center, Casper, Wyoming. He was surrounded by the deep love of his wife, mother, sisters and family along with the prayers of so many other family members and friends. Jake was born in Tustin, California to Philip and Joyce (Kohoutek) Burnett. He attended grade school in Wahpeton, North Dakota; grade school and junior high in Sheridan, Wyoming and high school in Nederland, Colorado. He studied photography at the Art Institute in Denver, Colorado. Jake was employed at Bresnan Communications as a Field Technician. He developed a love for Kempo (a mixed martial arts) and achieved his third brown belt and was progressing toward his black belt. He shared his talent through instructing others in the art. Jake enjoyed spending quality time with his family and was a loving and devoted father to his daughter Madison Jade. Jake was very well known for his generosity, kind heart, and giving spirit; always willing to lend a hand. Jake also enjoyed outdoor activities, cruising in his Jeep Wrangler and playing PS3. He married Jamie Sytsma, his best friend and soul mate, on June 19, 2010 in a beautiful outdoor ceremony at Kendrick Mansion. Jake was the love of Jamie’s life and the memories they created together will live on in her heart forever. Jake was more than just an amazing man, he was also a beloved son, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, father, husband, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. Jake’s sense of humor, laugh and smile, which could always brighten a room, will be deeply missed by all. Jake was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, Thomas and Adela Kohoutek, Lester and Jeanette Burnett, respectively, and his uncle, Rod Clemens. He is survived by his wife, Jamie; mother, Joyce Burnett; father, Philip Burnett; daughter, Madison Jade Burnett; sisters, Charice (Scott) Butler and Jessica Burnett; and aunt Judy Clemens. If you wish, memorials may be made under Jake’s name at Citco Federal Credit Union in Sheridan. Funds will be used to purchase a Memorial Bench for Jake at the site of the accident and to assist the family with financial obligations. LaDonna Jenkins
December 28, 1921 – September 28, 2010

LaDonna Jenkins, 88, of St. James, Minnesota died on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at the hospital in Mitchell, South Dakota as a result of a ruptured abdominal aneurysm. Funeral services will be held 10:30am, Friday, October 8, 2010, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Butterfield with Reverend Matthew Natsis officiating. Burial will be at St. Matthew's Lutheran cemetery in Butterfield. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 7, 2010, from 4pm to 8pm at the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James and will continue one hour before services at the church on Friday. LaDonna Caroline Grunig was born on December 28, 1921 in Aurelia, Cherokee County, Iowa to Jacob and Ethel (Guether) Grunig. She moved to Minnesota as a child and graduated from Butterfield High School in 1940. On February 16, 1941 she was united in marriage with Ronald Jenkins at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Butterfield where she was a member until her death. They made their home on the farm in Adrian Township where they raised their family. They farmed and fed cattle and hogs for 63 years before retiring. LaDonna enjoyed reading, quilting, gardening and traveling. She and Ron were charter members of the St. James farmer's market and worked at the Butterfield Threshing Bee. She was an active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and belonged to several clubs. She was an avid quilter and she and Ron made quilts for all of their daughters, grandchildren and many of the great grandchildren. Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Jerri Jenkins and Tom Morgan of St. Louis Park, MN; Jean Kintzi of Sheridan, WY; Julie Jenkins and Harry Greenwell of New Albin, IA; and Jayne Jenkins and Bill Gorman of Laramie, WY; grandchildren Kelly Rae Kintzi of Billings, MT; Travis Morgan of Orlando, FL; Tanya and Davide Raso of Maple Grove, MN; Richard and Laura Kintzi of Sheridan, WY; Josh and Theresa Smith of Winona, MN; and Eva Smith of Rochester, MN; great grandchildren, Logan and Jerica Smith of Winona, MN; Luca and Elena Raso of Maple Grove, MN; Katelynn and Zachary Kintzi ofSheridan, WY; and Calvin Smith-Vanderstoep of Rochester, MN; two brothers, one sister and one sister-in-law; a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. LaDonna was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald; parents; a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. James T. Feley
March 25, 1950 – September 10, 2010

James T. Feley, 60, of Sheridan passed away on Friday, September 10, 2010, in Clarkston, WA. James was born on March 25, 1950, in Howell, MI; to Jack R. and Helen Feley. Jim lived in Howell Michigan as a child, graduating from Hartland High School then joining the military shortly after. He later married for eleven years to Skeeter and they had two children, Jennifer and Jim II. The last 28 years of his life were spent with his companion, Sharon Troutt. Jim recently had been diagnosed with cancer and after receiving his last dose of chemo and radiation Sharon and he decided to go on a vacation to Idaho to where two of his gold claims are. While in Washington he became ill and passed away. Jim had been employed by Oftedal Construction Inc. for the last twelve years as a heavy equipment operator, working in Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota. He loved hunting, fishing, watching wild life, surfing the internet along with filming family, wildlife, and the beautiful scenery. Another one of Jim's many enjoyments was panning for gold in which he had recently bought two gold claims. As said by his son in law Jamie, "Jim was one of the most real, down to earth, all around greatest father, grandfather, companion, and friend that you will ever have". He is preceded in death by his father Jack Sr., brother Terry, sister in laws Judy and Mary, along with his niece Emma. He is survived by his mother Helen, partner Sharon, son Jim II, daughter Jennifer, grandchildren Alyssa, Katlyn, Tyler, Teylor, Cheyenne and Kayden, step children Kelly, Crista, Peri and Gary, brothers Jack and Ed, sisters Patty and Laurie, eleven step grandchildren, one step great grandchild and fourteen nieces and nephews. Jim will be loved and missed by many. A Memorial Service for James will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 2, 2010, at Kane Funeral Home, with Reverend Kevin Jones officiating. A reception luncheon will immediately follow at the VFW, 758 Broadway Street in Sheridan. A Memorial Mass will also be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 11:00 am at St. John’s Catholic Church, Howell Michigan. Janet Hicks
July 16, 1924 – September 25, 2010

Janet Hicks, 86, of Casper, passed away Sept. 25, 2010 at the Life Care Center. She was the biological mother of The Rev. Roger Hawthorne, twice interim pastor of The Winter Memorial Presbyterian Church in Casper. She is survived by her son, The Rev. Roger Hawthrone and his wife Jacki Zandi, her brother Gordon Haywood of Newcastle, WY, her niece, Trica Williams, nephew, Tim Williams both of Sheridan, other nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. She was a member of Winter Memorial Presbyterian Church. No services are planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the Winter Memorial Presbyterian Church or the Joshua Tree. Wayne Rettinghouse Sr., 63, of Clearmont died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Billings. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Friday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Saturday at Clearmont Community Church with Pastor Alex Sain officiating. Graveside services will follow in Clearmont cemetery. DeVerge “D.J.” Shelden
May 24, 1938 – November 23, 2010

DeVerge "D.J." Shelden, 72, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at his residence. D.J. Shelden was born in Douglas, Wyoming on May 24, 1938, to Budoin Dunkin and Clarence Faye Shelden. He was raised in the Sheridan, WY and Wyola, MT areas. He married Doris Lorraine Zier on August 25, 1962, where they made their residence in Lodge Grass, MT. He later married Julie Dorvall on November 12, 1980, where they resided in Bridger, MT. D.J. later returned to Sheridan in 2004. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, he enjoyed tinkering with everything, was known as a pack rat, liked hunting, fishing, and especially spending time with his family and friends. D.J. was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, and his son, Lester Lee Shelden. He is survived by his son, Kiel (Jacky) Shelden, of Sheridan, WY, Leonard (Kelly) Zier, of Hardin, MT., sister, Naida Hendricks, of Kingman, AZ., step-sister, Alice Fuller of Dayton, WY., grandchildren, Shane (Becky) Shelden of Billings, MT., Mason and Summer Zier, of Hardin, MT. and great-grandchildren, Ella and Jake Shelden, of Billings, MT. A Memorial Service for D.J. Shelden will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at Kane Funeral Home, with Pastor Doug Goodwin officiating. A reception hosted by the Blue Sky Saddle Club will be at the First Christian Church following the service. Luella Harnish Campbell Schaeffer Worthington
July 25, 1920 – November 25, 2010

Luella Harnish Campbell Schaeffer Worthington died Thursday, November 25, 2010, after a brief stay at Sheridan Manor. Luella was born July 25, 1920, in Julesburg, Colorado, the only daughter of George H. Harnish and Rose Adelaide Rhodes. She had three brothers; Harold (Red), Lee Roy (Buzz) and George Allen. Early in 1930, the family moved to Yakima, Washington to work in the apple orchards. In 1933, when Luella’s mother died the family moved to Wyoming. While her dad and brothers worked at various farm jobs Lu worked as waitress in the Coffee Cup Café in Clearmont, WY where she met Robert R. Campbell (Bob), they were married on June 14, 1939. Soon after Lu and Bob married he was hired by the CB&Q railroad as ticket agent & telegrapher and Lu continued to work as a waitress. Bob and Lu’s first son David was born in 1940. Bob was inducted into the Navy in 1944 and two months later in April a second son George was born. After release from the Navy, Bob resumed his employment with the CB&Q railroad as telegrapher in Newcastle, WY and Lu was busy raising two boys. In later years, Lu worked for Montgomery Ward in Gillette, then Walgreen’s in Casper, WY and Lincoln, NE. Lu continued to work for Walgreen Drug store as restaurant manager completing twenty-five years of service. In 1979, Bob retired his Train Dispatcher position with the railroad and they moved to Queen Valley, AZ. Bob died at age sixty nine in 1988 and is buried in Chandler, AZ.In 1989, Lu married Ora (J.R.) Schaeffer and they lived in Arizona, New Mexico and Nebraska until his death in the spring of 1995.Lu married Ed Worthington in 1996 and in March 2006 they moved to Sheridan to live close to her sons David and George. Ed died in September that same year. Since moving to Sheridan Lu has been an active volunteer at the Senior Center and a member of the First Christian Church. A group of nearly eighty friends and family helped Lu celebrate her 90th birthday on July 25, 2010 in Kendrick Park in Sheridan. Lu is survived by her two sons, George and David Campbell of Sheridan, five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Memorial service will be 2:00pm on Friday (Dec. 3rd) from First Christian Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials may benefit the Senior Citizen Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan.

Matthias Strahl, 91, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2010, in his Sheridan home.
Viewing is 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from Holy Name Catholic Church prior to the funeral liturgy at 10 a.m. with Father Ronald Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery in Big Horn.
Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
