Laura Jackson

Laura Jackson, 75, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home in Rapid City with the Rev. Michel Mulloy officiating. Burial will be in Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Jackson was born March 16, 1930, in Corson County, S.D., to Adam and Wilhelmina Rieger. She married Donald E. Jackson on Jan. 19, 1947, in Mobridge, S.D. The family lived on a farm near Glenham, S.D., for 25 years. In 1972, they moved to Mobridge, where they lived until moving to Harlingen, Texas, in 1990. They moved to Sheridan earlier this year to be closer to family. Mrs. Jackson was a member of Women of the Moose and the Congregational Church. She enjoyed playing cards and watching sports on television. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Survivors include her husband; three sons Russell of Maple Grove, Minn., Allen of Sheridan and Michael of Broomfield, Colo.; two sisters Minnie Rau of Selby, S.D., and Frieda Wessel of Rapid City; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Diane K. (Carruba) Larsen

Diane K. (Carruba) Larsen, 49, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, after a short battle with cancer, according to her family. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Friday and Mass celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church. A reception luncheon in Holy Name Parish Hall will follow the services. Survivors include her husband of 27 years, Robert; five children, Casten, Amber, Cambra, Brooke and Colter, all of Sheridan; her parents, Mario Carruba of Victor, N.Y., and Shirley Carruba of Farmington, N.Y.; three sisters, Jan Veomett of Farmington, Suzanne of Clifton Springs, N.Y., and Catina Hoak of Brockport, N.Y.; a brother, Carmine Carruba of Victor; and her grandfather, R.M. Person of Buffalo. Memorials may be made to a fund established in Mrs. Larsen's name to help cover medical expenses in care of Karen Green at First Interstate Bank. Memorials may also be made to Holy Name Catholic Church or Holy Name School.

Lorraine A. Brinkman

Funeral services for Lorraine A. Brinkman, 93, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Piedmont Valley Lutheran Church in Piedmont, S.D. Burial will be 3 p.m. Friday in Veblen, S.D. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Brinkman died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 2, 1912, to Casper and Sara (Snortland) Risdall on the family's farm outside Veblen. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Veblen High School, where she played on the varsity basketball team. She received her teaching degree from Bellingham (Wash.) Normal School. She married John O. Lien on June 21, 1934, in Veblen. They lived on the farm, and she cooked for the road crew of their construction company. She organized and was the first president of the Veblen PTA. The family moved to Breckenridge, Minn., in 1953. She continued to cook and was bookkeeper for the construction company. In 1958, the family moved to Big Stone City, S.D., and she was assistant manager of KDIO Radio with her own radio program. In 1962, they moved to Flandreau, S.D., and she was a dorm mother at Flandreau Indian School. Mr. Lien died in 1966. Mrs. Brinkman married Dr. Walter Brinkman on Oct. 2, 1976, in Langford, S.D. She retired, and they moved to Sisseton, S.D. Dr. Brinkman died in 1982. Mrs. Brinkman moved to Black Hawk, S.D., in 1984 to be near her brother. She moved to Sheridan in September to be near her son. She was a member of Piedmont Valley Lutheran Church. She enjoyed flower gardening, travel, crossword puzzles, making afghans and needlepoint. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sara Jane, and two brothers, Clayton and Jarvis Risdall. Survivors include a son, John of Story; a daughter, Mary Ollenburg of Seattle; a brother, Earl Risdall of Rapid City; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Dr. Walter Brinkman Scholarship Fund in care of Coteaudes Prairie Hospital, 205 Orchard Drive, Sisseton, SD 57262.

Karen Kay Schmill

Sheridan native Karen Kay Schmill, 54, of Casper died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, at Central Wyoming Hospice after a four-year struggle with ovarian cancer. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Casper with the Rev. Katherine Robinson officiating. Cremation will take place. Arrangements are with Bustard's Funeral Directors of Casper. Mrs. Schmill was born Nov. 30, 1950, in Sheridan to Harry and Dorothy Bodine. She attended Sheridan public schools, Sheridan High School and Chadron (Neb.) State College, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. She became one of the first women hired at the management level by Wyoming National Bank. She lived and worked in Gillette before moving to Casper, where she worked as an office manager for Centrilift. She married John Glenn Schmill in July 1986 in Casper. They divorced. She appeared in several Stage III Community Theatre productions. She enjoyed organizing neighborhood activities and parties. She served as a Girl Scout leader and was a room mother at Verda James Elementary School. She became a Master Gardener. When her acquired a dog, she became secretary of the Sheltie Club. She attended her daughters' school activities and dog shows. She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday school, and also belonged to the Altar Guild and assisted with Vacation Bible School. She completed a four-year study program, Education for the Ministry. When Meadow Wind Assisted Living opened, she became the activity director. She enjoyed holiday get-togethers, shopping trips to Denver and San Francisco, beach walks in Hawaii and Mexico, camping reunions in the Big Horns, and motor tours with her daughters. She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Ronald. Survivors include two daughters, Brooke Anne and Allison Rose Schmill, both of Casper; her mother of Gillette; and two sisters, her twin Karol Anne Tinken of Gillette and Bethel Bodine of El Cerrito, Calif. Sherman C. Husted

Funeral services for Sherman C. Husted, 68, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kent Bahruth officiating. Cremation will follow the service, and private family inurnment of cremains will be in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Husted died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born May 13, 1937, in Kermit, Texas, to Lester Clark and Lola Ethel (Johnson) Husted. He grew up and attended schools in the Dallas and Fort Worth areas. He joined the U.S. Navy on June 10, 1955, and was honorably discharged on June 9, 1959. He was a union carpenter for Peter Kiewit Co., helping build bridges and dams across the United States. He moved to Sheridan in 1994. He married Patricia Lutz on Oct. 12, 1962, in Watertown, S.D. He was preceded in death by four sisters. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lola Marie Rogers of Tekamah, Neb., and Penny Ann Sauerbrey of Columbus, Ohio; a son, William Clark of Sheridan; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Ethel Grace Meidlinger

Former Story resident Ethel Grace Meidlinger, 81, of Linch died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, in Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo. Private family inurnment will be later. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo. Mrs. Meidlinger was born April 21, 1924 in McGrath, Minn., to Edward Fredrick and Emelia Gahler Schipansky. She married Earl Carl Meidlinger on July 26, 1943, in McGrath. The couple spent most of their married life in the Finlayson, Minn., area. They moved to Wyoming in 1977 and lived south of Buffalo for several years before moving to Story. Mr. Meidlinger died in 2003, and Mrs. Meidlinger moved to Linch to live with a daughter. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah; four brothers; and seven sisters. Survivors include three daughters, Susan Nelson of Linch, Linda Kari of Finlayson and Wanda Brigan of Billings; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Norma Jean (Steel) Hebbert

Memorial services for Norma Jean (Steel) Hebbert, 64, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Hebbert died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at Westview Health Care Center. She was born Feb. 21, 1941, in Sheridan to William A. and Marie C. (Cohn) Steel. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1960. She married Ed Hebbert Hebbert in 1967. She enjoyed attending church, singing in the church choir, doing craft work, and being with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include a brother, Bill Steel of Sheridan, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801. Beatrice Thelma Wilkerson Former Sheridan resident Beatrice Thelma Wilkerson, 93, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, in Heisinger Lutheran Home. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Church in Jefferson City with the Rev. Cornell Sudduth officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements are with Buescher Memorial Home of Jefferson City. Mrs. Wilkerson was born March 7, 1912, in Macon, Mo., to William and Jenny Gruder Pickett. She married Raymond G. Wilkerson Sr. in 1929 in Kansas City, Mo. He preceded her in death. She attended schools in Macon, St. Louis and Kansas City, Mo. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sheridan. Survivors include two sons, Raymond G. Jr. of Chicago and Edward R. Sr. of Jefferson City; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Second Baptist Church Dowdy/Robinson/Jackson Scholarship Fund or to First United Methodist Church Building Fund in Sheridan.

Malcolm `Ward' Scroggin

A celebration of life for Malcolm Ward Scroggin, 55, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Goff Mortuary Chapel in Midvale, Utah. Burial will be in Craig (Colo.) cemetery. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Scroggin died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital after battling cancer. His family has invited friends to call or come by the family home at 329 Barn Owl Court in Sheridan anytime Tuesday. Visitation will be 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday in Goff Mortuary. Mr. Scroggin was born July 11, 1950, in Bingham Canyon, Utah, to Shirl K. and Isabell (Rose) Scroggin. He grew up and attended schools in Bingham Canyon and Sandy, Utah. He was a 1968 graduate of Jordan High School in Sandy. He attended the University of Utah, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1973 and a Master of Science degree in 1976. He started working in 1974 for Kennecott Energy as a human resource manager and retired after 31 years. He moved to Sheridan in 1998. He married Noreen St. Martin on Aug. 1, 1998, in Manila, Utah. He was an Eagle Scout and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, trapshooting, bike riding and spending time with his wife, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife; four sons, John St. Martin of Denver, Travis Scroggin of Herriman, Utah, Michael St. Martin of Craig and Daniel Scroggin of West Jordan, Utah; a daughter, Shannon St. Martin of Sheridan; his mother of Sandy; two brothers, Kevin of Midland, Mich., and Ted of Evanston; and two grandchildren. Alma Amanda `Mandy' Frisbie

Graveside services for Alma Amanda Mandy Frisbie, 87, of Ranchester will be 2 p.m. Monday in Dayton cemetery with the Rev. R.H. Robinson officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Frisbie died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, in Sheridan Manor. She was born Aug. 4, 1918, in LaSalle Parish, La., to William and Doshie (Griffith) Golden. She grew up in Louisiana and operated a restaurant in Gulfport, Miss., before it was destroyed by Hurricane Camille. She later worked in Utah and Alaska before moving to Ranchester with her sister. She married Clinton Frisbie in Sheridan on April 2, 1988. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, dancing and her family. She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Artilda Ann; two brothers, Sherman and Charles Edgar; a half brother, Bill Squyres; and a half sister, Jule Batterby. Survivors include her sister, Johnnie Mae Esters of Sheridan; a stepson, Dennis Frisbie of Sheridan; and a stepdaughter, Ellen Johnson of Mobile, Ala. Joel Edwin `JoJo' Kangas

Memorial services for Joel Edwin JoJo Kangas, 66, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Mr. Kangas died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, at his residence. He was born Aug. 15, 1939, in Butte, Mont., to Edwin and Elsie Kangas. He was a 1957 graduate of Butte High School and attended the Montana School of Mines in Butte for two years, studying engineering. The family went to Waterloo, Mont., to farm. Mr. Kangas raised potatoes, hay, grain and pigs. He enlisted in the Army at the start of the Vietnam War and was chosen to attend telecommunications school at Fort Monmouth, N.J., where he was second in a class of more than 200. He received radar training at Red Stone Arsenal, Ala., then was sent to Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, where he worked at missile sites. He was at a missile site 200 miles from Anchorage during the 1964 earthquake there. He was honorably discharged from the Army and worked for the Montana Highway Department, helping build the freeway between Butte and Whitehall. He later worked for Mountain Bell in Montana. He took early retirement due to illness and around 1983 moved to Sheridan. He enjoyed cooking, hunting, fishing, and hiking in the Tobacco Root Mountains and Upper Rudy Valley in Montana. Survivors include two sisters, Delores Kangas of Butte and Francella Kangas of Gresham, Ore.

Katherine `Sally' Kurpjuweit

Memorial services for Katherine Sally Kurpjuweit, 73, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Mrs. Kurpjuweit died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at her residence. Cremation has taken place. She was born April 5, 1932, to Clifford and Della (Payton) Adsit in Napa, Idaho. She married Albert Kurpjuweit in Sheridan. She owned and operated the Calico Loft in Sheridan for 20 years. She was a former president of the Does. She enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, crafts and painting, and she liked teddy bears. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Adsit, and a sister, Dorothy Adsit. Survivors include her husband; four sons, James Cherry of San Francisco, David Cherry of Casper, Douglas Cherry and William Cherry; a daughter, Katherine Cherry of Greeley, Colo.; and three grandchildren.

Robert A. `Bob' Gonder

Sheridan-native Robert A. Bob Gonder, 68, of Wasilla, Alaska, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, in Alaska Regional Hospital. Funeral services were Tuesday in Witzleben's Bragaw Chapel with the Rev. Phil Mielke of Big Lake Community Chapel officiating. Burial was in Angelus Memorial Park. Arrangements were with Witzleben Family Funeral Homes & Crematory. Mr. Gonder was born Feb. 20, 1937. He moved to Alaska in 1964 and lived in Anchorage and Wasilla. He was self-employed and a member of Operating Engineers Local 302. He was preceded in death by a son, Roger. Survivors include a son, Robert E. of Wasilla; a daughter, Carol Jean Medel of Anchorage; and three granddaughters. Memorials may be made to Friends of Pets, P.O. Box 240981, Anchorage, AK 99524.

Arlo Robert Asevedo

Former Sheridan resident Arlo Robert Asevedo, 31, of Glendale, Ariz., died accidentally in his home Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005. A celebration of his life took place Saturday at his residence. Burial will be later in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Asevedo was born Nov. 4, 1973, in Seattle. He spent most of his life in Wyoming and attended Sheridan College before moving to Arizona in 1994. He was a certified master technician in heating and cooling and owned Assured Mechanical H.V.A.C. LLC. Survivors include his wife, Stacy, and three children, Brandon, Blake and Ashley; his mother, Donna O'Banion-Crook of Rock Springs; and his sister, Sarah. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Kenneth Bridwell

Memorial services for Kenneth Bridwell, 32, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Mr. Bridwell died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, at his residence. Cremation has taken place. Mr. Bridwell was born May 25, 1973, in Sheridan to James and Jean (Tozier) Bridwell. He married Linda Gerlock on Nov. 1, 2003, in Sheridan. He enjoyed fishing and camping, NASCAR, English darts, pool and being with family. He was preceded in death by his father; a grandmother, Fern Hopkins; and his grandfathers, John Bridwell and George Tozier. Survivors include his wife; his mother, Jean Gorzalka of Sheridan; his stepfather, George Arzy; two stepchildren, Cody and Brittney Sisco; a grandmother, Juanita Tozier; a brother, Allen Ackerley; and a sister, Nancy Ackerley. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Dog & Cat Shelter.

Frank W. Wakefield

Funeral services for Frank W. Wakefield, 92, of Sheridan will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Presbyterian Church in Sheridan with the Rev. Doug Melius officiating. Committal services will be at Sheridan Municipal cemetery, followed by a reception at the Wingate Hotel. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Wakefield died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 5, 1913 in Boston. The family moved to Sheridan when he was a child. He married Eleanor Odessa Mills on Sept. 1, 1935. They lived in Colorado for a short time to help Mrs. Wakefield's family on the farm. They moved to Sheridan in 1936. Mr. Wakefield served with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II until he was injured and returned via hospital ship to the United States. He became manager of the canteen at the Veterans Administration Hospital (now Sheridan VA Medical Center) in 1949 for several years. He later retired, then went to work for Ross Campbell, managing the WYO Theater and Skyline Drive-in in Sheridan and several theaters in Buffalo. He volunteered his services as a captain in the Civil Air Patrol, a van driver for Sheridan VAMC and later worked with patients as a volunteer in the VAMC, was twice commander of the American Legion post in Sheridan and commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. For many years he headed the Apples for Teachers outreach program to rural schools in Sheridan County. He joined the Boy Scouts at age 12 and as an adult was a Cub Scout master and Scout master of American Legion Troop 107 in Sheridan. In December 1971, he received the Silver Beaver, the highest honor awarded by the Boys Scouts of America. He was active in theater and music, participating in many variety shows staged at Sheridan's Orpheum Theater. He was a member of the Sheridan Community Concert Choir for many years and a member of the ensemble vocal group directed by Bob Wilson. He was preceded in death by his wife and a son, Frank Eugene. Survivors include two sons, Robert of Sheridan and Larry of Kalispell, Mont.; a daughter, Mary of Lander; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Elizabeth Anne Haynes

Private family memorial services are planned for Elizabeth Anne Haynes, 61, of Story. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Haynes died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, at her home after a battle with cancer. She was born Dec. 16, 1943, in Junction, Texas, to William H. McNutt and Molly McKellar. She married Clifford Gary Haynes in 1961 in Marfa, Texas. They moved to Sheridan in 1973. She was in the first class of women to attend Texas A&M University and obtained her associate's degree from Sheridan College in 1986. She was a member of the Women of Wyoming investment club, serving as treasurer and vice president. She enjoyed crocheting afghans and creating cross-stitch ornaments for family and friends, attending garage sales and collecting. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Julia George of Sheridan and Marcy Zadina of Wisconsin; a son, Clifford Gray Haynes of Granville, Utah; her father; two sisters, Sara Norton of Blue Ridge, Texas, and Peggy Martin of Mason, Texas; a brother, Alden M. Lowther of Gardner, Mont.; and six grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James Romanzo Kirkpatrick

Memorial services for James Romanzo Kirkpatrick, 90, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Mr. Kirkpatrick died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, in Billings of natural causes. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Kirkpatrick was born May 19, 1915, in Phillips, Neb., to William A. and Martha Elizabeth (Smith) Kirkpatrick. He married Jacquelyn Langston on Aug. 16, 1958, in Sheridan. He ranched and worked for Mullinax Concrete for 34 years. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and camping. He was preceded in death by his wife; five sisters, Maude, Mary, Gertrude, Rosie and Ollie; and two brothers, William and Robert. Survivors include a son, Michael of Billings; a daughter, Kristy White of Chino, Calif.; and five grandchildren. Hazel Aegerter

Funeral services for Hazel Aegerter, 89, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Cliff Gronneberg officiating. Visitation will be 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mrs. Aegerter died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born March 27, 1916, to William and Althea (Smith) Cook in Fort Pierre, S.D. The family moved to Absarokee, Mont., when she was 2. She attended school there, graduating from high school in 1934. She married Arne Arthun in 1935. They farmed and ranched in the Stillwater Valley until they moved to Buffalo and operated a motel and service station. Mrs. Aegerter continued the business after divorcing Mr. Arthun in 1955. She married Harold Aegerter in 1956 in Buffalo. They continued the motel operation. Mr. Aegerter died in 1964. Mrs. Aegerter retired and moved to Sheridan in 1979. While running her motel in Buffalo, she worked as a cook at Johnson County Memorial Hospital and, later, as a waitress at the Crossroads Inn. After moving to Sheridan, she worked at Pamida Pharmacy, Westview Health Care Center and New Image Health Club until she was 86. She was a past president and secretary of the Sheridan African Violet Club. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 26 years and a LOGOS program youth mentor. Survivors include her children, Arvin Arthun of Billings, Raymond Arthun of Franktown, Colo., Mark Aegerter and Sonja Abell, both of Sheridan, and Arlene Hager of Soldotna, Alaska; two sisters, Alice Hart of Oregon and Maxine Dykeman of Montana; four brothers, Keith Cook of Florida, Chuck and Doug Cook, both of Montana, Alfred Cook of Arizona and Stanley Cook of New Mexico; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church LOGOS Youth Program, 135 Crescent Drive, Sheridan, WY 82801.
