Tonia Christine Burnette

Sheridan native Tonia Christine Burnette, 65, of Riverton died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at her residence. A celebration of her life was Monday in the Robert A. Peck Arts Center at Central Wyoming College in Riverton with the Rev. Inga Oyan Longbrake officiating. Cremation has taken place. Mrs. Burnette was born Dec. 13, 1940, in Sheridan to Joseph F. and Peggy George Rulli. She grew up in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School. She received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Wyoming in 1963. She was UW homecoming queen in 1961. She married Garry Burnette on June 13, 1964, in Sheridan. They lived in Indiana, Virginia, Michigan, Utah and Maryland and 10 years in Toronto, while Mr. Burnette pursued his work as a management consultant. Mrs. Burnette was a high school English teacher in Oregon and Maryland. The family moved to Riverton in 1973. Mrs. Burnette was employed by Central Wyoming College from 1979-2000, including as activities director and, for the last 18 years until she retired, as director of the Robert A. Peck Arts Center. She also was student senate sponsor and adviser. She retired in 2001. She spearheaded a mid-1970s drive to preserve the historic Chicago and North Western railroad depot in Riverton. The work became Riverton's official U.S. Bicentennial project. Mrs. Burnette helped establish Arts in Action, which sponsors community arts projects and performances, and initiated the annual Arts in Action Pierrot Awards honoring Fremont County artists. She also was a founder of the Wind River Arts Foundation and Hot Notes/Cool Nites, a summer band concert series in Riverton and Lander. She received the 1982 Governor's Arts Award in recognition of her service to the arts and served on the Wyoming Arts Council from 1988-94. She served two terms on the Riverton school board, was District 25 School Board chairwoman twice, and was the Wyoming Association of School Administrators' 2004 Wyoming School Board Member of the Year. She was a member of the Riverton Kiwanis and the Riverton Downtown Beautification Committee. She received the Riverton Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Service Award in 2005 for community service, leadership and citizenship. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Rulli. Survivors include her husband; a son, Todd of Park City, Utah; a daughter, Shelby Rodriguez of Denver; a brother, Dan Rulli of Arizona; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a scholarship fund established in Mrs. Burnette's name in care of Wyoming National Bank, 1700 N. Federal, Riverton, WY 82501, Attn: Tonia Burnette Arts Scholarship.

Karen J. Moyes

Memorial service for Karen J. Moyes, 59, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Terrel Bearden officiating. Mrs. Moyes died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at her residence. She was born Jan. 4, 1947, in Sheridan to Chester and Ardith Emily (Kelley) Davey. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan and was a 1965 graduate of Sheridan High School. She married Russell Moyes on Dec. 28, 1994, in Sheridan. She was a certified nursing assistant at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed the mountains and working in her yard and flowerbed. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, of Sheridan; a son, Richard Rexroat of Bellevue, Wash.; a daughter, Trina Adams of Sheridan; several brothers and sisters; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the recipient of the donor's choice.

Rodney R. St. Clair

Rodney R. St. Clair, 77, of Sheridan died Thursday, April 6, 2006, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and services will be later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. St. Clair was born Aug. 16, 1928, to Edwin and Jesse (Mills) St. Clair in Gebo. He was a 1948 graduate of Hot Springs High School. He joined the Marine Corps after graduation and was stationed in China. After his discharge, he went to Thermopolis, where he worked on the Boysen Reservoir dam. He was called back into service during the Korean War. He moved to Norwalk, Calif., after his second discharge. He married Betty Jo Johnson on May 24, 1952. Mr. St. Clair worked for Telford McCallum Steel in Norwalk for about four years. The family moved to Billings in 1956, and Mr. St. Clair worked as a structural engineer for Mountain States Steel until 1971, when the family moved to Jackson. They bought and managed United Campground of Jackson Hole until 1976, when they sold it and began traveling. The St. Clairs spent a month in the Philippines, then returned to the United States and spent summers in Mesa, Ariz., and winters working for the National Park Service in Grand Teton National Park. They returned to Thermopolis in 1993. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kim of Sheridan and Robin Dittrich of Beaverton, Ore.; a son, Rodney Ron; and four grandchildren.

George Arthur Dickson

Dayton native George Arthur Dickson, 88, of Riverton died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at his residence. A celebration of his life will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Davis Funeral Home of Riverton with the Rev. Bill Carlson, pastor of United Methodist Church, officiating. The celebration will be followed by military honors at the funeral home, conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars. A dinner at the VFW Hall in Riverton will follow. Mr. Dickson was born Jan. 15, 1918, in Dayton to Bly and Ruby Dickson. He grew up in the Big Horn Mountains and Sheridan. He attended school in Sheridan and graduated from high school in 1936. He attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins for three years before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941. He served in the South Pacific, primarily New Guinea, for 31 months as a radio operator. He returned to the United States in 1944 and married Dixie Van Alstyne on Dec. 25, 1945, in Dayton. They moved to Fort Collins, where Mr. Dickson returned to CSU and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in range management in 1950. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Buffalo until he was recalled into military service for the Korean War in 1950. He served one year in the Army infantry, stationed mainly at Fort Carson, Colo. After discharge, he returned to Buffalo until 1952, when he was transferred to Hulett for 11 1/2 years. He was transferred to Riverton in 1963. He retired in 1973. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Masonic Lodge and Odd Fellows. He held offices in the VFW and Legion. He enjoyed fly-fishing, stamp collecting and hunting. He was preceded in death by a sister, Opal Lofgren. Survivors include his wife, Dixie; a son, Jim of Kehei, Maui, Hawaii; a daughter, Gina Decker of Newberry, S.C.; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Little Wind Hospice or the VFW in care of Davis Funeral Home, 2203 W. Main, Riverton, WY 82501.

Kathryn June Harrison

Memorial services for Kathryn June Harrison, 51, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Mrs. Harrison died Monday, April 3, 2006, at her residence. She was born May 26, 1954, in Sheridan to Martin and Irene (Jacobs) Overgaard. She married James Harrison on Sept. 8, 1973, in Story. She was a registered nurse. She worked at Sheridan VA Medical Center for 11 years, one year at Westview Health Care Center, and one year at Campbell County Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed her roses, working in her yard, sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, travel, riding, camping and taking walks with her husband and their dog, Rudy. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Amanda Malyurek of Gillette; a son, Jacob of Gillette; her stepfather, Jim Wilson of Sheridan; four brothers, David and Tom Wilson, both of Sheridan, Alan Wilson of Tennessee, and Steve Wilson of Texas; and a grandson. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Big Horns in care of Janet Bishop, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

William Ludell Slates

Former Sheridan resident William Ludell Bill Slates, 78, of Buffalo died Saturday, April 1, 2006, at his residence. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Alan Schaberg officiating. Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. Tuesday and 8-9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with military graveside honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Mr. Slates was born March 2, 1928, in Gillette to Clyde and Ethel Slates. He grew up and attended school in Gillette. He worked on Campbell County ranches until 1946, when he joined the Army. After service, he returned to Gillette and worked on construction for several years. He married Frances Haskin on March 17, 1954, in Gillette. They moved to Sheridan in 1961, and Mr. Slates owned and operated the Last Frontier Service Station. He later worked for Sheridan County. He and Mrs. Slates moved to Buffalo in 1992 after he retired. He attended New Assembly of God Church, was a past member of Jeans and Queens Square Dance Club of Sheridan, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, the mountains, and dancing. He was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters, a grandson and a granddaughter. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Andrea Slates of Sheridan; and one granddaughter.

Amy Elizabeth Coggins

Funeral services for Amy Elizabeth Coggins, 37, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery, Big Horn. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Coggins died Friday, May 26, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of apparent natural causes. She was born Sept. 26, 1968, in Boston to Stuart and Elizabeth (Hillis) Wakeling. She grew up and attended schools in Boston. She graduated from Cactus High School in Phoenix in 1987. She attended nursing school at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix and worked at Vencor Hospital there for 15 years, starting as a nursing assistant. She moved to Sheridan in 2004. She was a member of the Baptist Church. She enjoyed camping and being with her family. She was preceded in death by her mother and grandparents. Survivors include her husband, Roger; her father of Phoenix; three sons, Tim and Joshua Thomas and Dillon Coggins, all of Sheridan; a daughter, Nicole Coggins of Auburn, Calif.; and a sister, Becky Wakeling of Boston.

Dean Kiester

A celebration of the life of Dean Kiester, 64, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Gifford officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery and will be followed by a luncheon for family and friends at the home of Linda and David Kiester, 855 Illinois St. Mr. Kiester died Friday, May 26, 2006, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born May 27, 1941, in Miles City, Mont., to Thomas Marian and Melissa Ann (Owsley) Kiester. The family moved to Sheridan in 1951, and he attended Sheridan schools. He went to work for Sheridan VA Medical Center. He joined the U.S. Army on Dec. 7, 1965. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged Oct. 17, 1968. He returned to Sheridan and worked for the VAMC as a cook. He retired in May 1995 as chief of dietetics. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and growing tomatoes. He was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Reagan LePage of Tyler, Texas, and Kim Marr of Flagstaff, Ariz.; two brothers, David of Sheridan and Richard of Dallas; two sisters, Doris Watt and Judy Bobbitt, both of Sheridan; and two grandsons. Memorials may be made to Lukas LePage College Educational Fund in care of Tara Keep, First Federal Savings Bank, 46 W. Brundage St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Miles Junior Buell

Miles Junior Buell, 85, of Buffalo died Thursday, May 25, 2006, at his residence after an eight-year battle with prostate cancer. He was brother of Eldon Buell of Sheridan. Private graveside committal services will be later. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Mr. Buell was born June 8, 1920, at the Glen Haven ranch on Shell Creek north of Buffalo. He grew up on the family ranch and attended Shell Creek Piney School. He was a 1938 graduate of Johnson County High School. After high school, he attended vocational agriculture classes in Sheridan for two years. He joined the U.S. Navy in December 1941 and served in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he lived in Denver for a couple of years operating an ice cream shop. He married Gwen Hodges in Denver in March 1948. They moved to the family ranch on Shell Creek. They later lived on the Silva Ranch on Clear Creek and in Coos Bay, Ore., for six years. They were divorced, and Mr. Buell returned to Buffalo and worked at the Massey Ferguson Dealership. He and his brother later bought the dealership. He married Peggy Mathany on Nov. 5, 1971, in Billings. They made their home in Buffalo. Mr. Buell bought out his brother's interest in the dealership in 1972 and operated it until 2005, when poor health forced him to retire. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Anchor Lodge No. 7 AF&AM, Kalif Shrine, Scottish Rite, Golden Rod Chapter 13 of Order of the Eastern Star, and a life member of Elks Lodge 520, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. He was a member of the Johnson County cemetery board from its inception until 2004 and a member of the 49'ers Dance Club and the Big Horn Poker Club in Sheridan. He enjoyed gardening, irrigating and fishing. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Warren Buell of Casper and Jack Matheny of Gillette; three daughters, Barbara Lavaty of Portland, Ore., Patty Peterson of Ogden, Utah, and Darlene Case of Gillette; two other brothers, Charles of Buffalo and Ralph of Cheyenne; a sister, Frances Jochem of Belgrade, Mont.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Susie Bowling Lawrence Hospice or St. Francis Animal Shelter in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Timothy Eli McHenry

Former Sheridan resident Timothy Eli McHenry, 65, of Worland died Tuesday, May 23, 2006, in Worland. Cremation will take place following a family visitation, and a memorial service will be later. Arrangements are with Veile Mortuary of Worland. Mr. McHenry was born March 15, 1941, to Laura Mae (Mitchell) McHenry in Gillette. He moved to Billings in 1950 to live with a brother after his mother's death. He was a 1959 graduate of Billings Senior High School. He attended college at Missoula, Mont., on a football scholarship for a year. He married Karen I. Schroeder on June 9, 1962, in Billings. They moved to Sheridan, and Mr. McHenry worked at Gambles Store until 1967, when he was transferred to the store in Bozeman, Mont., as assistant manager. He moved to Worland in 1970 to manage the Gambles Store there. Mr. McHenry later worked for Worland Ford as a salesman for several years before going into the insurance business for Farmer's Union and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wyoming. He later was employed by the city of Worland. He served several terms on the Worland City Council and was mayor for one term. He was a former member of Jaycees and the Wyoming National Guard. He was an avid tennis player and golfer and enjoyed fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jill Jones, Amy Calhoun and Jenny Ketterling, all of Worland; three brothers, Charles of Billings and Holland and Kenneth, both of Sheridan; and eight grandchildren.

Ellen Marie Gravos

Memorial services for Ellen Marie Gravos, 56, of Sheridan will be later in Watford City, N.D. Mrs. Gravos died Sunday, May 21, 2006, at her residence. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Gravos was born Dec. 29, 1949, in Worland to V.W. Frosty and Ione (Fry) Tidemann. She married Ralph Gravos on July 5, 1967, in Williston, N.D. She was a secretary for R&R Specialties in Williston, owned and operated the Hard Ride Liquor Co. in Alexander, N.D., and worked for Carl's Bakery in Watford City. She belonged to Zoar Lutheran Church in Arnegard, N.D., and the Women's Petroleum Club. She enjoyed the outdoors and fishing with her husband and their dog, Griff. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband; a son, Kelly of Minneapolis; and siblings Arlen Tidemann of Texas, Gayle Dawson of Casper and Scott Tidemann of Arizona.

Adeline Rose `Ada' Johnson

Adeline Rose Ada Johnson, 90, of Riverton died Saturday, May 20, 2006, at her residence. She was mother of Terry L. Johnson of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Davis Funeral Home in Riverton. Burial will be in Fort Bridger cemetery. Mrs. Johnson was born May 24, 1915, at Encampment to Frank and Jennie (Wirth) Murray. The family moved by wagon to a homestead at Mountain View when she was a year old. She graduated from Mountain View High School and was a 1934 graduate of the Broadway Beauty School in San Diego. She was in the beauty business for 36 years. She owned the H&A Beauty Salon in Cody and the LaVogue Beauty Salon in Lander. She retired in 1970. She married Chester Earl Johnson in Ogden, Utah, in 1939. They owned and operated Johnson Plumbing and Heating until his death in 1984. Mrs. Johnson attended the Christian Church in Riverton. She enjoyed caring for her flowers, knitting and crocheting. She cooked and baked for family and friends until two weeks before her death. She enjoyed spending time with her family. She lived in Lander 31 years. After her husband's death, she moved to Casper to be near her daughter. She returned to Riverton in 1996. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Violet Burton of Evanston and Jessie Teeples of Portland, Ore.; and a brother, Everett Murray of Mountain View. Other survivors include a daughter, Linda Kantor of Casper; a brother, Glenn Murray of Caldwell, Idaho; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Harold V. `Spike' Olson

Masonic funeral services for Harold V. Spike Olson, 80, of Sundance will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Masonic Lodge Hall in Sundance conducted by Sundance Lodge 9 A.F.&A.M. Mr. Olson was the father of Donna Cope of Sheridan. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Friday in Black Hills National cemetery, Sturgis, S.D. Visitation will be 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Friday in the Masonic Lodge Hall. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home of Sheridan. Mr. Olson died Saturday, May 20, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born April 21, 1926, at Arpan Flats near Belle Fourche, S.D., to Harry and Grace (Bellen) Olson. He grew up and attended school at Arpan Flats and was a 1944 graduate of Belle Fourche High School. He joined the U.S. Navy immediately after graduation and served during World War II, earning the Victory Medal, Asiatic/Pacific Area Campaign Medal and the American Area Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged on May 16, 1946. He returned to the Belle Fourche area and worked for Black Hills Power and Light Co. as a lineman for several years. He later worked all over the United States for Line Builders Inc. He joined Range Telephone in 1960 as a superintendent in Forsyth, Mont. He retired from Range in 1986 in Sundance as a service representative. He married Betty Pauline Wetsch on Sept. 5, 1968, in Sheridan. He was a member of Hiram Lodge 52 A.F.&A.M. of Forsyth, York Rite Bodies of Forsyth, Kalif Shrine of Sheridan and Inyan Kara Shrine Club of Sundance. He was an Honorary 33rd degree Mason of the Grand Lodge A.F.&A.M. of Montana. He was a member of Electa Chapter 5, Order of the Eastern Star of Sundance, American Legion of Sundance, Loyal Order of Moose of Belle Fourche, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, the U.S. Navy Memorial and Ducks Unlimited. He was active with the Senior Citizens Center in Sundance. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, gambling in Deadwood, S.D., and being with his family. He was preceded in death by a sister. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Mike Olson of Gillette, Allan Olson of Hay Market, Va., Ron Wetsch of Drummond, Mont., and Rick Wetsch of McCook, Neb.; two other daughters, Punky Zastoupil of Forsyth and Valerie Olson of Billings; a sister, Margorie Russo of Ark Dale, Wis.; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Shrine Children's Travel Fund in care of Kalif Shrine Center, P.O. Box K, Sheridan, WY 82801.

John Mates

Funeral services for John Mates, 74, of Big Horn will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Mr. Mates died Sunday, May 21, 2006, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Oct. 4, 1931, in Acme to John and Anna (Boyko) Mates. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1948 and served until 1951, when he was honorably discharged. He married Janice Hyde on March 3, 1967, in Sheridan. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing or gardening in the summer. He also enjoyed being with his family, polka music, singer Ernest Tubb and dancing. He was a Denver Broncos fan. He owned and operated a landscaping company for 35 years. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Eagles Lodge. He was preceded in death by two sons, Johnny Mates in 1990 and Randy Romeo in 1973; and a sister, Grace Kuta. Survivors include his wife; six daughters, Linda Williamsen and Nancy Perry, both of Gillette, Rita Corlis and Renee Garriffa, both of Sheridan, Jeanne Badgett of Arvada, Colo., and Janice Peterson of Encampment; three sons, Robert Romeo of Goshen, Ohio, Richard Romeo of Story and Ronald Romeo of Sheridan; a brother, Frank of Salinas, Calif.; two sisters, MaryAnne Haner of Wichita, Kan., and Janne Gaddis of Golden, Colo.; 24 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Big Horn Fire Department in care of Tara Keep, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
