Elizabeth Lockwood - 06/26/03

Funeral services for Elizabeth Margaret (Garr) Lockwood, 97, the grandmother of three Gillette residents, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Bible Church in Miles City, Mont.

Burial will follow in the family lot in the Custer County Cemetery in Volborg, Mont.

Visitation continues until 8 tonight, June 26, in the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City.

Mrs. Lockwood died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.

She was born in Broadus, Mont. Aug. 1, 1905, to Eugene H. and Tillie Helen (App) Garr. She attended school at Broadus, graduating in 1924.

Mrs. Lockwood was a teacher. She attended Normal School in Dillon and later began teaching at the Gaskill School near Loesch, Mont.

On March 14, 1928, she married Lyle Lockwood in Miles City. They had three children: Jean, Joyce, and Sonny. They made their home near Coalwood, Mont.

They spent most of their lives ranching and raising kids, cows, and horses. She worked alongside of her husband and was called on to rake and buck hay, run the farm and still have a decent meal on the table by noon. Winters were spent hauling hay, feeding cattle, and calving. Mr. Lockwood died March 6, 1992, and she continued living on the ranch until the last few months when her health failed her.

She enjoyed planting and preserving her garden and was noted for having the first seeds in the ground more than once in the same year. She made sure her two horses and cats were fed and watered everyday.

She is survived by her son, Edwin "Sonny" Lockwood of Volborg, Mont.; two daughters, Joyce Riley of Volborg and Jean Hafla of Miles City; 11 grandchildren, including Lila Young, Penny Fullenwider and Dave Lockwood, all of Gillette; and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son; an infant daughter; two brothers, Earl Garr and Gene Garr; and two sisters, LeMoyne Sandall and Juanita Cowan.

Memorials may be made to Holy Rosary Hospice, 2600 Wilson, Miles City, MT 59301.

Jennifer L. Santos - 02/07/01

Jennifer L. Santos of Gillette died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at her home in of natural causes. She was 26.

Miss Santos was born June 7, 1974, at Walnut Creek, Calif., to Terry Lee Grant and Laurel Murray. She attended elementary school at Shore Acres in California and high school at Concord High School in Concord, Calif.

She later came to Gillette and worked as an aide at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home and in private home care.

She is survived by a daughter Caitlynn Santos; her grandparents who raised her, Charles and Veryl Bailey of Bay Point, Calif; her mother, Laurel Murray of Antioch, Calif.; and a brother, Billy Welch of Antioch.

She was preceded in death by a son, Steve Jessy Salles Santos in 1993.

Wilson Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.

Helen M. Ellard - 04/19/02

Helen M. Ellard, 83, of Sundance, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the Crook County Memorial Hospital in Sundance.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler-Roberts Funeral Chapel in Sundance.

Phillip Smith - 02/06/03

Memorial services for Phillip Smith, 38, the brother of four Gillette residents, were Jan. 17, 2003, at Bustard's Funeral Home in Casper.

Cremation has taken place. Burial of the cremains was in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Casper.

He died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at his home in Casper.

He was born Feb. 26, 1964, in Odessa, Texas, to Jack and JoAnn (Porter) Smith. He was the youngest of six children.

The family moved to Colorado shortly after his birth and to Oklahoma when he was 5 years old; settling in Casper when he was in fourth grade.

He discovered in grade school that he had a talent for drawing when he broke his collarbone and couldn't play outside.

He was a mechanic at Foss Motors.

He enjoyed fishing, shooting pool and spending time with his family.

Mr. Smith is survived by four children, Danny, Kassi, Melissa, and Aero; four sisters, including Cissy Gallion, Belva Martinez and Samara Smith, all of Gillette; one brother, Jack Smith of Gillette; an aunt of Casper; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two nephews.

Chloe Furber - 02/08/01

Former Gillette woman Chloe Myrtle Furber, 91, of Madison, Ill., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Elizabeth Medical Center in Granite City, Ill., of heart failure.

She was born June 18, 1909, in Winona, Mo.

Mrs. Furber was a minister at the Church of God of Prophecy in Gillette from 1950 to 1953. She was a minister at the Church of God in Hillsboro, Mo., for 40 years.

Her hobbies included sewing, quilting and cooking.

Survivors include three daughters, Wanda Ausbun of Tacoma, Wash., JoAnn Eddy of Gillette, and Alice Stacy of Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Josephine Zelenka of Madison, Ill., and Gladys Coleman of McAllister, Okla.; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Caroles Furber Sr.; her parents, Harvey and Mila (Miner) Glass; a son, Delbert Hicks; a brother, Richard Glass; a sister, Nica Wall; a grandson, Freddie Eddy, and several other grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Church of God in Hillsboro, Mo.
