Memorial service for Paul True of Gillette, Wyoming will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at the Presbyterian Church in Gillette, Wyoming with Pastor Joel Wright and Dr. Tom Phillips officiating. With Masonic Rites provided by Troy Swartz.
Paul True, age 85, died on Saturday, March 26, 2005 at the Pioneer Manor in Gillette, Wyoming of natural causes.
Paul True, the man who was known for a devilish twinkle in his eye and well developed sense of humor, was born on August 25, 1919 in Fairbury, Nebraska. He grew up there and farmed in the vicinity as the family had several small farms in Jefferson County near Fairbury. He learned how to milk cows, slop hogs, feed chickens, harness a team and the thousand and one things one learned growing up on a Nebraska farm in the 1920’ AND 30’S. It wasn’t all work though as he talked about playing many games and being “Tarzan” in the trees, dueling with wooden sticks, and all the crazy things kids did in those days.
He grew up and graduated from High School in 1937. He went one year to Peru State Teachers College, decided it wasn’t for him and went to work. First he worked as a Fuller Brush salesman, then went to work for Hested Stores Co. warehouse where he worked up to foreman.
He met Dorothy M. Johnson in May of 1939. On their second date they went to a dance in Lincoln, Nebraska and danced to the Lawrence Welk orchestra. They were married Oct. 22, 1939. Their first child, David, was born in 1940. Paul was transferred to Nebraska City as an assistant manager and, in 1943, got his first Hested Store to manage in Wheatland, Wyoming. In 1944 Paul and Dorothy moved to Douglas, Wyoming. Paul was present at Lees Tavern when the idea of the Jackalope was conceived. Their second child, Becky, was born in 1946.
Paul went to work for the Vaughn Ragsdale Company and after a couple of moves wound up as manager in Gillette, Wyoming in May of 1953. Paul managed the store, which later became the C.R. Anthony Co. until Jan. 1, 1980. Dorothy was his credit manager and cashier. He went to work for the Gillette Broadcasting Company after his retirement and worked there until 1983.
To say that Paul was involved in his community would be a major understatement. He often stated, “community involvement is the price we pay for he space we occupy.” He was instrumental in starting the first “Crazy Days” for the downtown businesses in Gillette. He was named Mr. Chamber of Commerce after serving 3 consecutive terms on the Board of Directors. He was President of the Hospital Board from 1966 to 1970. He served on the Board for the
Pioneer Manor and Pioneer Apartments for 22 years--from 1972 – 1994. He served as Elder and Deacon of the Presbyterian Church and was a member of the choir for 50 years. He was also a past president and/or presiding officer of many civic organizations and Masonic bodies and Worthy Patron of Eastern Star.
Paul loved Wyoming and it’s people, snow skiing, water skiing, hunting, fishing and golfing. He said, “God Bless Wyoming and America the Beautiful.”
He and Dorothy enjoyed their travel trailers. They spent a lot of weekends in the Black Hills and from 1987 to 1995 traveled coast to coast with it. They loved Yellowstone and went there many times. Paul was an avid reader and probably read all of the books written by Louis L’Amour . He loved to play cards and other games with family and friends. Paul was always known for his wit and humor—he was fond of telling people that it took an “older woman” to catch him (Dorothy is older by a few months) and that Dorothy was the only woman he never cheated on. They had 65 ˝ years together. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved and was loved by his family and many friends.
Paul is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his son, David K. True a Brokerage Firm manager in Rapid City, S.D.; his daughter, Becky a Superior Court Judge in Ventura, California; his sister, Lois Pearce of Denver, CO.; his brother, Robert R. True of Denver, Co; his brother, Edward L. True of Wichita Falls, Texas; sister-in-law, Barbara Johnson of Denver, Co.; 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Owen and Florence (Bower)True and his sister, Ruth.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Paul True's name to the Hospice of Campbell County, Masonic Lodge #28 or Campbell County Senior Center.
