Barbara L. Arrison, 83, of Sheridan, passed away at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County on Sunday, March 11, 2001. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2001 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Kane Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10:00AM, Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Melius Officiating.

Grace E. Artist Age 84 of Dayton, WY
Died Tuesday, February 13, 2001, in Sheridan Manor, Sheridan, WY
Born May 9, 1916, in Sheridan, WY
Parents - Andrew & Ollie (Sayre) Hassey

The family lived on their homestead at the CX Ranch near Decker, MT, until moving to Dayton in the spring of 1920. They operated a dairy business in Dayton. Grace married Hugh Artist on July 13, 1941, in the St. Thomas rectory in Monarch, WY, and they raised their four children in Dayton. Grace was an outstanding seamstress and made clothes for all the family. She was a charter member of the Dayton School Benefit Club which she helped organize in 1937. She was the first secretary of the Club and a member for over forty years. In the summers, Grace cooked at local dude ranches in the area including the IXL Ranch which was among her favorite memories. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, playing cards and word search puzzles. She was a member of the Dayton Bridge Club for many years and enjoyed dancing especially with her son-in-law David. She loved having family gatherings.

Preceded in death by her husband Hugh, son Richard, sister Mary Grace and brothers Andrew Jr. and Roy Hassey.

Nina J. Ballek Age 74 of Sheridan, WY
Died Monday, February 26, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County
Born June 23, 1926, in Acme, WY, to Paul & Eva (Cheslar) Washut

She grew up in Kleenburn, WY, attending school in Monarch, WY, and graduating from Sheridan High School. She worked at the Von Ragsdale Clothing Store. Nina married Frank Ballek on July 30, 1949, in Sheridan. Together they operated Ballek Refrigeration. She was a loving mother and enjoyed babysitting the grandchildren. Nina was a member of the Polka Club and attended Polka Festivals in many western states. She enjoyed cooking, baking, shopping and dancing.

Preceded in death by two brothers Robert & Louis Washut.

Died Saturday, February 10, 2001, at Belle Fouche Health Care Center, S. Dakota
Born June 5, 1920, in Upton, WY
Parents - Morton & Leeva (York) Dare.

She grew up on the family homestead between Upton & Newcastle, WY. She attended country school and later attend school in Newcastle. She went to work as a young woman in Newcastle as a waitress. She moved to Rapid City, SD, where she met her future husband. She married Robert L. Barker in Sheridan, WY. She worked in Sheridan until Robert became ranch manager for the Bar E Bar Ranch and they moved to Dayton, WY, where they lived for ten years. They then moved around Wyoming, Idaho and Montana as Robert worked construction. They moved into Sheridan and June continued to work as a waitress until she retired at the age of 76. She moved to Whitewood in July, 2000.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Vincent W. Beamish Age 30 of Dayton, Nevada,
Died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, in an auto accident near Dayton.

The family moved to Sturgis, SD, where he attended elementary school. They moved to Sheridan in 1982 and he graduated from Sheridan High School where he was active in Drama Club and won a tournament in Ninjitsu. He worked at several jobs including RENEW and Hardee's Restaurant. In 1997, he moved to Dayton, NV, and worked at RTP a plastics factory.
He also was working part time for Amazon.com. Vince enjoyed adventure and tried most everything including rafting and bungee jumping. He was a very good cook and talented with computers. Vince loved music and going to concerts. In Dayton he was a member of the Volunteer Fire Dept. and attended River of Life Church.

Quentin R. (Grandma) Bell Dies at 99

Quentin R. Bell died peacefully March 3, 2001 at the Wyoming Retirement Center in Basin, Wyoming. Quentin was known by many nicknames throughout her life. Very rarely did she go by her given name. Among her loved ones she was known as Babe, Bell, “Z”, and most of all Grandma. She was born September 24, 1901 in Seward County, Nebraska, the fourth child of
John Fletcher Gowey and Loila Permelia Long. The family moved to Campbell County, Wyoming to homestead in 1914. Grandma married Edwin Lockett Bell in Sheridan, Wyoming, on March 22, 1922. They made their home in Sheridan for most of their married life.

Grandma was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Addison Gowey, two sisters, Susa Christensen and Olive Gowey, her beloved husband, Ed (Tex) Bell in 1977, and her son, John Edwin Bell in 1923. She is survived by her daughter, Blanche Ekwall (Sheridan), her granddaughter, Rose (Cita) Heaton (Salt Lake City, UT), five great-grandchildren all from Salt Lake City, UT, Jennifer Yorgason, Andra Bruce, Charles Heaton, John Heaton, and David Heaton, three great -great -grandchildren, and one niece, Esther Hoxie, Nampa,ID.

Grandma was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and St. Joseph’s Group CCW.

Rosary services will be held at Kane Funeral Home at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2001. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at Holy Name Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 9, 2001 with The Reverend Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in the Elks Cemetery.

Donations in Quentin’s memory may be made to the Wyoming Retirement Center through Delphine Toner, c/o First Interstate Bank, PO Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801, in lieu of flowers.
