Jim Allen Aveoganna
Wainwright, Alaska

Jim Allen Aveoganna, Sr., 76, died Friday, December 21, 2001 at the Denali Center in Fairbanks.

He was born October 10, 1925 in Wainwright, Alaska to Joe and Carrie (Anakarak) Aveoganna.

Jim Allen grew up in a subsistence lifestyle and was well known for his successful polar bear hunts.

He was a whaling captain, expert harpooner and crack shot.

Jim Allen loved the land and sea and passed along survival skills to his nine children and several villagers whom he mentored.

Jim Allen served on the Aleutian Islands during WWII in the Army and in the National Guard until retiring in 1985 as Sergeant Major.

He was a hard worker and did construction work, served as magistrate, served as the Wainwright village coordinator for eleven years and had worked for the U.S. fish and wildlife service.

Jim Allen was a member of the Whaling Captains Association and the Wainwright Presbyterian Church.

He was a shareholder of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation and Olgoonik village Corporation.

Jim Allen was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ralph, sister Hazel Dayo, daughter Pauline Carrie, son Ray, grandsons Martin Jo and Joseph and great granddaughter Jennie.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years Beverly; sons, Darryl, Jim Jr., Leslie, Woodrow and his wife, Mary Jane and Dennis and his wife, Virginia; daughters, Mattie and her husband, Patrick Okpeaha and Patricia; grandchildren, Ramona, Pauline, Betsy, Arlene, Marlow, Lily, Ronald, Isabel, Rodney, Darrylynn, Darryl II, Jeffrey, Ralph, Jennie, Olivia, Clayborne, Ethel, Olaf, Billy Allen, Dennis Jr., Lisa, Myrna Loy, Tommy James, Jim Allen, Laura May, Clair, Amy, Leslie, Raymond, Barnabus, Natasha, Ralph, Martha, Ellen, and Hal; great grandchildren, Jacqueline, Jasmine, Jimmie Dean, Jamie Joseph, Billie Ray, Amanda, Crystal, Robert, Elizabeth, Michael, Joseph, Elizabeth and Joel Robert; sister, Bertha Peavy of Anchorage; sister in-law, Mary Aveoganna of Barrow; brother in-law, Stanley Dayo; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services with military honors were conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 28th, 2001 in Wainwright, Alaska with burial following at the village cemetery.

Danielle Noel Knight
Fairbanks, Alaska

Danielle Noel Knight, 26, passed away in her sleep of heart failure on Dec. 16, 2001, at her home in Fairbanks.

Danielle was born in Fairbanks on Dec. 24, 1974, to Robert Knight Sr. and Beverly Smith.

Danielle graduated from Nenana High School in 1993.

She was listed in "Who's Who of American High School Students" for two consecutive years.

Her favorite pastimes were being with family and friends and spending time in the village of Rampart.

Danielle inherited her grandmother Dinah's kindness and good heart.

Friends would say they came to be around her because of the happiness she felt about life and unselfishly shared with everyone around her.

She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Nenana and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Fairbanks.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother Dinah, aunt Diane and brother Robert Knight Jr.

She is survived by her companion Aaron Joseph; children Hailey and Brandon; mother Beverly Smith; father Robert Knight Sr.; stepmother Sharon; special "grandmothers" Josephine Riley and Jenny Joseph; sisters Kathryn Amsbury and Jaime Desrochers; brother-in-law Sam Amsbury; aunts Jan Puryear and Alvina Fowler; uncles, Tom Titus, Larry Fowler, Ed Puryear III and Clinton "Sonny" Richards; nieces and nephews, Kristina, Michael, Justin, Kayla, Garrett and Anthony; cousins, Karen, Dianna, Tim, Deanna, Norman, Tammy, Kim, Terrie, Eddie, Dinah Jo, Rucky, Christopher, Clinton, John, Sue and Noreen; her companion's mother Edna Riley; and many, many friends.

A funeral service was held on Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at the Nenana Civic Center.

Burial followed at the Nenana Native Cemetery.

A potlatch was held at George Hall tonight, Dec. 21.

A trust has been established for her children at Wells Fargo Bank.

Arrangements were by Fairbanks Funeral Home & Crematory.

James Paul Erick
Beaver, Alaska

Our beloved husband, father, brother, and uncle James Paul Erick, 47, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 16, 2001.

He died unexpectedly at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

James was born in Fort Yukon, Oct. 17, 1954, to John and Maggie Erick.

He served in the Alaska National Guard and was discharged in 1972.

A resident of Beaver, he lived a subsistence lifestyle.

He was a carpenter and seasonal firefighter.

His nicknames were "Honest Jimmy" and "Bad Dude."

His family said, "He had a good sense of humor and loved to make people laugh.

He touched many hearts and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He never looked down on anyone."

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Maggie Erick; grandparents James and Myra Roberts and Paul and Natalie Erick; aunts Jessie Luke and Sarah Henry; uncle Neil Henry; brothers-in-law Eugene Englishoe and Walter Peter; and sister-in-law Judy Erick.

He is survived by his loving and wonderful wife of 20 years, Alfreda Erick; children Bobby, Johannes, Ethan, Robert John, Keith, Heaven and Maggie John; grandson, Aaron; sisters Vera, Virginia, Sherry and Mildred; brothers John, Ernest, Earl, Dennis, Robert and Richard; brothers-in-law Nat Englishoe and Benjamin Peter; sisters-in-law Alberta Erick and Donna Erick; nieces Jerilyn, Jodi, Julie, Dawn, Rachel, Eugenia, Maggie, Rose, Christina, and Joni; nephews Leon, Winston, Chuck, Robert, Nathan, Earl Jr., Duwayne, Chance, John Fred, Ben, Shawn, Jade, Darrin, Peter, Clyde, and Alex; and numerous aunties, uncles and cousins in the Yukon Flats.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 19, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church with a memorial service following.

The Rev. Scott Fisher will officiate.

A potlatch will follow the service at the church.

Covered dishes are welcome.

A burial service will be at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 21, at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Venetie.

The Rev. Trimble Gilbert will officiate.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Dorothy M. Sayre

Dorothy May Sayre, 86, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, quietly passed away in her sleep at Fairbanks Pioneers' Home on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001.

Dorothy was born in Minnesota on April 29, 1915, and has resided in Fairbanks for the past 14 years.

Dorothy dedicated her life to providing loving care and assistance to others.

She is survived by her sisters Ruth Pulson and Alice Rootes of Apache Junction, Ariz., daughters Phyllis Johnson of Olympia, Wash., Arlys Westfall of Two Rivers, and Donna Blair of Mountain Grove, Mo.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Fairbanks Pioneers' Home in the recreation room at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in memory of Dorothy may be sent to the Fairbanks Pioneers' Home Foundation.

Robert C. Smith
Fairbanks, Alaska

Robert C. Smith, 84, passed away Dec. 15, 2001, at the Fairbanks Pioneers' Home.

Bob was born Oct. 21, 1917, in Jenkins, Ky. to E.P. and Nina Smith.

He grew up in Kentucky, Texas and Mexico.

He attended high school in Jefferson, Texas, getting his diploma in 1936; he graduated from John Brown University, Siloam Springs, Ark. in 1939.

On Christmas Eve, 1940, he married Allene Baker, a marriage that lasted 55 years.

During World War II Bob was a civilian inspector for the U.S. Army Air Corps in Tulsa, Okla.

He performed static and in-flight inspections on B-24 Liberators, SBD Dauntless dive bombers, and B-26s.

After the war he and Allene completed teacher certification at Arizona State College in Flagstaff and taught in Purcell, Mo., Jefferson, Texas, Sanders and Navajo Station, Ariz., Fort Wingate, N.M., and Palmdale, Calif.

He retired from teaching in 1978; Allene retired in 1983.

In 1995, Bob moved to Fairbanks after 44 years in the American Southwest.

Bob was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and photographer, having taken thousands of photos in Navajo country in Arizona and New Mexico and of the California desert.

Some of his favorite photographic subjects included the Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater, and the San Francisco Peaks in Arizona, the Valley of the Bubbling Water, N.M., Yosemite Valley and Joshua Trees in California, and sunsets wherever he encountered them.

In Fairbanks, he continued his interests in photography and nature, especially bird life.

He enjoyed outings with his son and daughter-in-law and was a favorite with the waitresses at Denny's and the Bakery Restaurant.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Allene Smith; brother James Willis Smith; and son Rob Smith.

He is survived by his son Ron Smith, daughter-in-law Marsha Knobel, granddaughter Hilary Smith and her husband Bruce Lackovic of Santa Rosa, Calif.; grandson Andy Murakami-Smith, his wife Miwako, and great-granddaughter May Murakami-Smith, all of Osaka, Japan; grandson Jason Smith of Seattle; and aunt Lola Blackburn of Jefferson, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Fairbanks in mid-January.

Interment will be in Palmdale, Calif. with a reception to follow at First Presbyterian Church in Palmdale.
