Clinton Victor Wiehl
Fairbanks, Alaska & Beaver, Alaska

Obituaries Clinton V. Wiehl Traditional chief and cherished elder of Beaver, Clinton V. Wiehl, passed away on Jan. 3, 2002.

Clinton was born Sept. 5, 1920, in Rampart to John and Florence Wiehl.

He shared a rambunctious and happy childhood with 13 brothers and sisters.

Clinton served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands and Washington.

Shortly after the war Clinton eloped with Mabel Billy of Beaver on the mail boat to Fort Yukon.

Together they had eight children, raising them in a subsistence lifestyle on the Yukon and Beaver rivers.

In the late 1950s, heartbroken at the death of Mabel, Clinton threw himself into his work.

Clinton and the late Moses Cruikshank, also of Beaver, worked for the State of Alaska, Rural Development Project that funded the construction of new homes in Beaver, Venetie and Arctic Village.

Clinton was a first rate "cat-skinner" according to Moses; together they brought the D-7 cats overland to Arctic Village during the winter of 1959, a feat that had not been accomplished until that time.

Clinton completely overhauled the old engines, which were donated by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The project ran out of funds during the Arctic Village construction phase, however, Clinton and Moses continued to work until all the homes were completed.

During his construction days in Arctic Village, Clinton met and married Margaret Tritt and had two children.

He was in the Local 302s, Operating Engineer's Union and worked in Prudhoe Bay, on the trans-Alaska oil pipeline and for Golden Valley Electric Association.

Clinton served on the Beaver Tribal Council for many years as chief.

During his latter years, his knowledge and wisdom were still sought as the traditional chief.

Clinton was very vocal in his concern that the values and traditions in which he was raised, such as respect for others and their property, were deteriorating in the younger generation.

Clinton is survived by his seven children and their respective families: Florence (Tiny) Wiehl: Lawrencita, Richard, Melissa, Danielle and Jacqueline; Ella Prettyman and Arthur Terry: Christopher, Bobby Jo, Billy Jo and Misty; Teresa Wiehl and Vincent Stack: Carmen, Krista, Liisia and Tyler; Edward Wiehl and Cindy: Ted, Clinton, Kyle and Collette; Cecilia Wiehl: Katie, Johnson, Clifford and Kenneth; and Katie Wiehl and Ben Henry: Anthony and Jaysanna; Bertha Ross: Marvin and Lemmitt; the descendents of the late Connie Trinidad: Ralph, Teresa, Ottawa, Crystal, Tina, Joseph and Rahanna.

Great grandchildren: Anastasia, Jon, Tristan, Rose, Victoria, Siera, Shenay, McKayla, Vanessa, Quinnten, Aurora, Carl, Shayla, Krystan, Constance, Corinna and Kyle.

He is further survived by sister Elizabeth Newman; brothers Henry Wiehl Sr. and wife Betty, John Wiehl Jr. and Daniel Wiehl; sisters-in-law Joanne Wiehl, Clara Joseph, Nora Billy and Sarah Tritt; mother-in-law Naomi Tritt; and 148 nephews & nieces.

Funeral service for Clinton were held at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church on Jan. 7, 2002, at 1 p.m. with visitation at 12 p.m.

Final interment will be on Jan. 9, 2002, in Beaver at 12 p.m.

Arrangements cared for by the Fairbanks Funeral Home.
