Fred Eugene Carroll

Homer resident and former Fairbanks resident Fred Eugene Carroll died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Fern Ridge TLC Assisted Living Center in Homer. He was 90.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Homer Senior Citizen's Center. Pioneers of Alaska will officiate at the service.

Mr. Carroll was born July 2, 1910, in Hebron, Bibb County, Ala. He married Erma Morey Corey in October 1941 in Fairbanks. In 1954, they purchased property on Kachemak Drive and resided in Homer since that time. Mr. Carroll worked for Homer Electric Association until his retirement.

"When (Erma) was residing at the Long Term Care Center of the South Peninsula Hospital, hardly a day passed that Fred did not spend time with her, " his family said. "Fred was very dedicated to her care.

"He loved to go in his camper that Erma called the 'Battle Wagon.' Fred loved to bowl and was made a member of the Alaska Hall of Fame of which he was very proud. He was a member of the Pioneers and was named King Regent, " his family continued.

"Fred loved to join his late stepson Ed and wife Marianne at Tangle Lakes in August. Stepson Bill would always make it possible for him to get there after he couldn't drive the long trek. Fred loved to garden, especially Petrowski turnips and a beautiful raspberry patch. As his years increased, his gardens decreased in size, " the family wrote.

Mr. Carroll was preceded in death by his wife Erma; stepson Edward James Corey; and stepgranddaughter Colleen.

He is survived by stepdaughter, Marianne Corey; and stepson, William Alfred Corey, both of Homer; sisters Frances Annie Lou, Lexie Josie Lee and Eva Mae; brother, Hampton, of Alabama; many nephews and nieces; stepgranddaughters Lynda, Sharon, Sheila and Lauralynn; and stepgrandsons Richard and William.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Homer, 3953 Bartlett No. 3, Homer, AK 99603.

Arrangements were made by the Homer Funeral Home.

Joseph S. Carlough Jr.

Memorial services for Skipper Joseph S. Carlough Jr. will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Seafarer's Memorial on the Homer Spit. Pastor Rick Wise will officiate. A gathering will take place at the Homer Elks following the services.

Mr. Carlough was born Nov. 14, 1957, in Seldovia. He died Aug. 17, 2000, from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was a lifelong fisherman and most recently worked as a Kasilof setnetter, longliner and Bering Sea crab boat captain. He was affectionately known by many as "Little Joe."

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Carlough's memory may be sent to the Seafarer's Memorial Fund, Box 796, Homer, AK, 99603.

David Allen Reust

David Allen Reust died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, in Wilson, Wyo. He was 33.

Mr. Reust was born Aug. 5, 1969, in Salem, Ore.

He died in a tow-truck accident in Wyoming, where he had recently moved. He was a tow-truck driver.

Mr. Reust was formerly from the Kenai Peninsula. He worked in Alaska for many years as a pipe fitter and welder on the trans-Alaska oil pipeline in Prudhoe Bay. He also worked on offshore oil rigs and in town.

Mr. Reust was an Army veteran. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time in the outdoors with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Stephanie of Washougal, Wash.; son, David Jr.; daughter, Evelyn Marie; mother, Linda Burke of Washougal; father, Dan Reust, formerly of Kenai; sister, Christina Joudrey of Washougal; brother, Dan Jr. of LaPine, Ore.; grandparents, Vivian and Robert Reust and Marvin and Dorothy Reese, all of Salem, Ore.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, P.O. Box 8249, Missoula, MT 59807.

James John Dahl

Homer resident James John Dahl died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at South Peninsula Memorial Hospital in Homer. He was 77.

A memorial service is planned for Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at 2:30 p.m. at South Peninsula Hospital in the Long Term Care Unit.

Mr. Dahl was born June 14, 1925, in Iron River, Mich. He received his degree from Central Michigan University.

He was a medical corpsman in the U.S. Navy on the USS Benevolence in World War II from 1942 to 1944.

He moved to Homer in September of 1985.

Mr. Dahl was a senior lab technician in the research lab of Dow Chemical Co. in Midland, Mich., for 27 years, during which time he had several patents. He retired in 1979.

He was a Catholic.

Mr. Dahl enjoyed family, friends, hunting, fishing and sports.

"He was kind, strong and caring. He had a great sense of humor and a smile for all. He was loved by many and will be missed by those who knew him, " his family said.

Survivors include his daughter, Mary Baringer of Homer; sons, Frank Dahl of Cadillac, Mich., Kevin Dahl of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Mark Dahl of San Antonio; brother, Bob Dahl of Houston; sister, Pat Shepner of Pebble Beach, Calif.; sister-In-law, Franci Dahl of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; grandchildren, great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Long Term Care Unit of South Peninsula Hospital, 4300 Bartlett, Homer, AK 99603.

Arrangements were made by Homer Funeral Home.

Emery Vincent Showalter

Kenai resident Emery Vincent Showalter died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at his home. He was 68.

A celebration of Mr. Show-alter's life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fort Kenay.

Mr. Showalter was born Dec. 11, 1933. He served in the Army at Fort Richardson and received an honorable discharge.

He worked as a beach gang boss and pile driver foreman for Wards Cove Packing for 25 years until his retirement in 1996.

He was a member of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Mr. Showalter was on the Kenai Volunteer Fire Depart-ment. He also was active in the original formation of Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and served on the board of directors for Salamatof Native Association for many years.

"He loved to moose hunt and to fish. He was proud of his Native heritage and took an active interest in Native events. He loved to visit friends and to talk about 'old Kenai.' He was highly respected for his knowledge of Cook Inlet and the Kenai River. He also enjoyed planting flowers, gardening and nature, " his family said.

"Emery had a special place in his heart for his eight grandchildren, whom he loved dearly."

He is survived by his wife, Veja; sisters, Adeline Chaffin and Hilma Bocatch; brothers, Bobby Showalter and James Showalter; children, Vince, Zack, Ruby and Emmie; grandchildren, Tauna, Sarah, Raymond, Amanda, Annie, Katherine, Billy and Nichelle; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.

Cecil Allen Hamilton

Cecil Allen Hamilton died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, in Phoenix, Ariz.

Mr. Hamilton was returned to the Kenai Peninsula and interred at Spruce Grove Kasilof Cemetery on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, among many of his old friends.

Allen "Ham" Hamilton came to Soldotna in 1961. In 1962, he started his own oil tool company, Ham's Oil Tools.

Many of his visits and deliveries were made by airplane. He was commander of the Civil Air Patrol in the mid-1960s until 1969. He was also a member of the hospital board and active in getting the hospital started in Soldotna. At the end of his career he was a consulting engineer handling several oil rigs at a time.

Wherever he went, Alaska was still his home and he always wanted to return, his family said.

Mr. Hamilton is survived by his wife, Dee Hamilton, who lives with her daughter, Sandy Stubblefield, in Soldotna; sons, Denny Hamilton of Seward and Norm Hamilton of Aloha, Ore.; five grandchildren, Travis Stubblefield, Shaun Stubblefield, Duke Lee Hamilton, Ray Hamilton and Bill Hamilton; and four great-grandchildren.

Lauren Sue Kane-Robinson

Seward resident Lauren Sue Kane-Robinson died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage. She was 46.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at DJ's Wheelhouse. Her ashes will be scattered in Seward at a later date.

Ms. Kane-Robinson was born Dec. 13, 1955 in Chicago, Ill. She moved to Seward in 1986 where she and her former husband, David Headley, ran Seward radio KRXA until 1990. She also lived in the Wasilla and Kenai areas. At the time of her death, she was working as a bartender at DJ's Wheelhouse in Seward.

Ms. Kane-Robinson was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Women of the Moose and Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling, golf and especially riding on Harleys.

"I understand why Lauren always called Seward home because of the wonderful people I've met since coming here. The warmth and support that I've received has been overwhelming. Thanks, Seward, for your kindness to my daughter and to me, " her father said.

"She liked life, she liked having fun and she made friends everywhere she went, " David Headley said.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ione Kane.

She is survived by her father, Jack Kane; brothers, Murray and Dennis, all of California; and former husband, David Headley.

Barbara Ann (Blatchford) Barnes

Seward resident Barbara Ann (Blatchford) Barnes died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in an automobile accident. She was 52.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Seward Chapel, with Pastor Paul Pichotta officiating. A celebration of life potluck will follow.

Mrs. Barnes was born Jan. 13, 1950, in Sitka to Eugene and Mabel Blatchford. The family moved to Seward in 1963. She was the second child in a family of seven. She graduated from Seward High School in 1968. Following high school, she attended Sheldon Jackson College. She also attended Alaska Skill Center and Anchorage Community College.

She worked at Seward Fisheries, where she was known for being the fastest halibut cheeker and herring roe processor. She was known for her compassion when she worked at the SLAC Adult Activity Program. Mrs. Barnes held many titles at the Qutekcak Native Tribe, including the Johnson O'Malley coordinator, secretary and community health representative.

She enjoyed putting on potlucks, sobriety celebrations and helping people. Her latest place of employment was at the Seward Bus Line, where she enjoyed meeting and talking with people.

"Barbara was very artistic, she loved drawing and painting. She was very competitive and loved doing crossword puzzles, reading, playing bingo, berry picking, spending time with her grandson Branden and spending time with her family and friends, " her family said.

"She was a hard worker and a giving person who would give her last dollar to someone in need. She had a great sense of humor, and people were drawn to her fun personality. She loved and valued people for who they were, always giving encouragement. She is greatly loved and will be missed by all."

Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her son, Tony Deer.

She is survived by her husband of 18 years, Steve Barnes; daughters, Danielle Deer and Kimberlee Barnes; sons, Joe Deer, Stevie Barnes and Kevin Barnes; parents, Gene and Mabel Blatchford; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanie and Dennis Greene, Ruthi and Brian Stanley, Judi Sweeney, Ellen Setters and Patti Estes; brother, Kenny Blatchford; grandson, Branden Ramoth; and many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.

David Forbes

Kenai resident David Forbes died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002. He was 55.

A memorial celebration will be held at Kenai Peninsula College at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Forbes name may be sent to the Performing Arts Society or KPC Sunday Showcase Director's Office, Kenai Peninsula College, 34820 College Drive, Soldotna, AK 99669, or to any performing arts organization on the Kenai Peninsula.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
