Amelia F. Pfuhlman
Soldotna, Alaska

Soldotna resident Amelia F. Pfuhlman died January 25, 2002 at the Heritage Place in Soldotna of natural causes.

She was 103 years old.

A memorial service was held 2:30pm Thursday, January 31, 2002 at the Heritage Place in Soldotna.

Pastor Jim Pearson will officiated.

She will be buried in Bagely, Minnesota in the spring of 2002.

Mrs. Pfuhlman was born on August 15, 1898 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

After her parents passed away in 1935 she moved to Northern Minnesota and married Jacob Pfuhlman.

In 1994 she moved to Soldotna to be closer to her daughter.

She was a member of the Lutheran faith.

Her family writes “Mom enjoyed singing her favorite hymns in both English and German and is now singing with the angels.”

Mrs Pfuhlman is survived by her daughter Carolyn Prince of Soldotna, her granddaughter Valarie Phillips of Anchorage, her grandsons, Darryn Prince of California, Devery Prince of Anchorage, and Ryan Prince of Wisconsin. and 9 great grandchildren

Arrangements were by the Peninsula Memorial Chapel.

John P. McDonald
Soldotna, Alaska

Soldotna resident John Patrick McDonald died January 24, 2002 at the South Peninsula Hosptital in Soldotna of natural causes.

He was 86 years old.

A memorial mass was celebrated 12 noon Tuesday January, 29th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Soldotna.

Father Richard Tero will officiate.

His ashes were interred in the Fort Richardson National Cemetery near Anchorage.

Mr. McDonald was born June 15, 1915 in Cloquet, Minnesota, and attended St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minnesota.

He served in the US Army during World War II and received the purple heart for wounds received in the Philippines.

He served as a Private First Class in the 63rd Infantry Division.

Mr. McDonald moved to Alaska in 1980 and lived in Kodiak for 5 years and in Soldotna.

He was an Illustrative Photographer.

He was known for staying in the bush for extended periods taking photographs of the nature that surrounded him.

He also volunteered with the Alaska State parks in Kodiak and at the Soldotna Senior Center.

Mr. McDonald enjoyed outdoor photography, card games, music, books and the occasional political discussion.

Mr. McDonald’s family writes “John was a life long Catholic devoted to attending mass daily.

He believed that our Lord and his blessed mother Mary were faithful to him throughout his life.

He shared the belief that Faith, Hope and above all Love was the way to accept others.

Through this commitement in faith John greatly influenced the lives of others as a 'grandfather' a proud American, a strong Democrat, and a humble human being.

He shared his love of the lord, his fine intellect, books, music and his love of the outdoors with those he met.”

Mr. McDonald was preceded in death by his parents John William McDonald, and Katherine Kavanaugh of Minnesota.

He is survived by his many friends from the catholic church, the community and his family Sabrina, Kiana and Ashlyn, whom he loved very much.

Harvey E. Buzzell
Kenai, Alaska

Kenai resident Harvey Elwood Buzzell died Tuesday, January 29, 2002, of congestive heart failure at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna, Alaska. He was 79.

Funeral services were 3 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2002 at Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai, Alaska.

Missionary Tommy Thompson will officiated at the service.

A reception followed the funeral at the funeral home.

A memorial service and burial in the Glenside Cemetery will be held in Winthrop, Maine in the spring of 2002 with the time to be announced.

Mr. Buzzell was born June 2, 1922 in Wayne, Maine.

He attended schools in Winthrop, Maine.

Mr. Buzzell also served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre.

In 1948, he married JoAn Lenfest Snow.

Mr. Buzzell worked the family farm and later his own farm in Maine.

He also worked at the Carlton Woolen Mill, the U.S. Post Office, logging and the lace factory in Winthrop.

Following an injury and broken back in 1968, Mr. Buzzell attended heating and refridgeration schools in Auburn.

He became a master plumber and bought HH Harriman Plumbing.

In 1997, he moved to Kenai, Alaska, where he later became the maintenance supervisor at Salamatof Seafoods and retired in 2000.

His family said, “He will be remembered as a hard-working man who loved his family and friends.

He particularly enoyed woodworking, fishing and golfing.”

Mr. Buzzell was preceded in death by his parents, Elwood and Mildred Buzzell, a brother, Carroll and his twin brother, Harold.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, JoAn of Kenai; daughter, Billie and husband Joe Hardy of Soldotna, Alaska; son, Craig and his wife Debbie of Wayne, Maine; grandchildren, Scott Hardy and his wife Pamela of Bremerton, Wash. and Shanon Hamrick and her husband Eldon of Soldotna, Alaska; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by sisters, Lorna and husband Walter Lach of Hartford, CT., Helen and husband Stanley Kotkosky of Windsor, CT., and Marion Pinkham of Paxton, Mass.; a brother, Elwood of Winthrop, Maine; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Buzzell of Leeds, Maine.

Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel of Kenai, Alaska and Roberts Funeral Home of Winthrop, Maine.

Vivian Cecilia Graves
Anchorage, Alaska

Vivian Cecilia Graves, 81 of Anchorage died Saturday January 26, 2002 at Providence Extended Care Center.

She was born October 24, 1920 in Alpena, Michigan.

She received a Masters Degree in Education, and was a retired 2nd grade school teacher and also taught Special Education.

She moved to Girdwood to live with her son in 1998 and lived for 2 years until health problems developed and later move to Anchorage.

She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She tutored kids at the Women’s Crisis Center in Alpena, Michigan and she loved to read.

The family is quoted as saying, “She always found the beauty and goodness in everyone."

Vivian is survived by her son; Ray Graves & his wife Wendy of Girdwood, Alaska, brother; Ralph Reynolds of Alpena, Michigan, grandchildren; Carmen and Kali Graves both of Girdwood, Alaska.

Her ashes will be scattered at a later date at the Evergreen Cemetery in Alpena, Michigan.

Arrangements are by Anchorage Funeral Home.

Barbara Jean Pinney
Anchorage, Alaska

Barbara Jean Pinney, 54 of Anchorage died Saturday January 26, 2002 at her home after complications from cancer.

She was born April 29, 1947 in Saginaw, Michigan.

Memorial services will be 12:30 P.M. Saturday, February 2, 2002 at Zion Lutheran Church, 2100 Boniface Parkway with Pastor Richard Rist officiating.

There will be a reception following the services.

Barbara graduated from Reese High School, in Reese, Michigan and graduated from Hurley School of Nursing in Flint, Michigan, with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing.

She was also certified in Epidemiology, Hemodialysis, Critical Care Nursing, Infectious Disease Control and Employee Health Nurse.

Barbara has been a registered nurse for 35 years, of which 23 was spent working until retirement from Alaska Regional Hospital.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and was a member of the Alter Guild.

Barbara did Scrabby Bear, tracking hygiene to grade school kids in the Anchorage School District and the Alaska Health Fairs.

Some of her hobbies include breeding and raising St Bernards, and Pembroke Welsh Corgie’s.

She was a member of the St Bernard Club of Alaska, Alaska Dog Weight Pulling Association, Past President of the APIC.

The family is quoted as saying, “Barbara was a beautiful, loving, warm hearted wife and mother.”

She is survived by her husband; William B Piney of Anchorage, daughter; Rana Pinney of Anchorage, mother & father; Tony & Gertrude Kern of Reese, Michigan, brother; Tom Kern & wife Junane of Deford, Michigan, sister; Sandra Keinath & husband Terry of Reese Michigan, nieces; Jodi Kern & husband Robbie Waclawski of Clio, Michigan, Audra and Todd Buchanan, nephews; Brian Keinath of Upper Peninsula, Michigan, Scott Kern & wife Sherry of Reese, Michigan, Jason Kern & wife Cindy of Las Vegas, Nevada.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made in Barbara’s name to the National Brain Tumor Foundation, 414 13th Street Suite # 700, Oakland, California 94612-2603, Phone (1-800-934-2873). Arrangements are by Anchorage Funeral Home.
