Ann C. Keener

Longtime Juneau resident Ann C. Keener died Jan. 31, 2002, in Juneau after a brief illness.

Ann was born to Fanny and Charles Charles on July 12, 1909, in Hoonah. She lived most of her life in Southeast Alaska. She was of the Kaagwaantaan Clan and the Box House. Her Tlingit names were Kanax wudu.aat and s'eilawux.

She married Henry Johnson at a very young age and had two sons, Joseph and Peter Johnson. In the 1940s she married Joe C. Albayalde and had two children, Irene and Joe Jr. Her next marriage, in the early 1950s, was to Joe Alimorong and they had one daughter, Johanna. She lived in Hoonah in her early years traveling with her family to Excursion Inlet, where they worked in the fishing industry for many years.

Ann lived in Juneau from 1941 to 1964. She left Alaska with her fourth husband, Ernie Keener, and moved to Kansas City, Mo., returning to Alaska to live in Haines from 1979 to 1998. She then lived in Juneau until her death.

She is survived by her son Joseph C. Johnson and his wife, Agnes, of Sitka; her daughter, Irene Albayalde-Robinson and husband Arthur of Soldotna; daughter Johanna Alimorong of Kansas City, Mo., and daughter-in-law Jan Albayalde of Juneau.

She had 33 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Ann was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Phoebe Charles; her husbands Joe Albayalde and Joe Alimorong; sons Peter C. Johnson and Joe Albayalde Jr.; grandchildren Georgianna Chercasen, Cynthia Johnson, Virginia Sam and great-grandson Wilbur C. Johnson.

Ann was a dedicated worker in the nursing field and a life member of the Salvation Army church. She was a member of the Haines ANS Camp 5, and Juneau ANS Camp 2.

She will be remembered by her family and friends as a strong and respected matriarch of a very large family. Her legacy includes her personal strength, knowledge of the Tlingit culture, story-telling, her love of life, her dignity and exceedingly loving nature exhibited to all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held at the ANB Hall on Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow. Funeral services will be held at the Salvation Army church on Feb. 6 at 6:00 p.m. A reception will follow at Salvation Army Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ANB/ANS Hall and the Salvation Army.

Helen Jane Burgess

Lifelong Alaskan Helen Jane Burgess died April 8, 2001, at her home in Juneau.

She was born Jan. 13, 1937, in Juneau, to Arthur "Scotty" and Phyllis Adams. She graduated from Juneau­Douglas High School in 1954 and attended Washington State University. She married and raised five children in Juneau.

She was a member of P.E.O., Capital City Women's Bowling Association and the Juneau Golf Club. She enjoyed fishing and spending time out on the water hand trolling. She bowled for many years in several leagues. She enjoyed gardening and travel, and was an avid reader.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband Jim Burgess and sisters Gretchen Adams and Virginia Reed (and Doug Hanon), all of Juneau; her children, Keith Burgess (and Sandi) of Juneau, Sandra Harrison (and Glen) of California, Suzanne Schoenmann (and John) of Juneau, Betsy Fisher (and Bob), and Kathy Ford (and Gordon) of Washington, nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of her life at 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Mike's Place in Douglas.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations to Hospice and Home Care of Juneau, 3200 Hospital Dr., Suite 100, Juneau, AK 99801.

Martin D. Siverly

Former Juneau and Douglas resident Martin Douglas Siverly died Feb. 3, 2001, in Anchorage after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born Sept. 9, 1949, in Juneau and grew up on Douglas Island. He especially loved the outdoors and hunting, often living near Fish Creek with the Nielson family. From 1968 to 1971 he served in the U.S. Navy in the western Pacific and Vietnam aboard the USS Whiteplains as a gunnerman. After military service he returned to Alaska, working in Fairbanks and later in Anchorage.

His family wrote that he loved his people and was known for his good heart and humor.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather Louis Hicks and birth father Lawrence Siverly. He is survived by his mother, Ella Fortin, brother, Larry Siverly, sisters, Pattie Adkisson and Adele Porter, and several nephews, grandnephews and a grandniece, all of Juneau, and brother, Victor Fortin, of Las Vegas. He is also survived by many close friends who were the family of his heart in Anchorage, where he resided for the past 20 years.

A small memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Northern Light United Church.

Richard E. Shepherd

Richard E. Shepherd, veteran political assistant and executive for the state of Alaska, died June 12, 2001, in California.

He was born April 22, 1937, to Clyda and Edward Shepherd in Vancouver, Wash. Shepherd worked for the state and federal government in the 1960s and '70s. He worked as special assistant to former Govs. Walter J. Hickel and Keith Miller before being named to a similar post within the Office of the Secretary of the Interior by Hickel and successor Rogers C.B. Morton. He later went on to become assistant to Congressman Don Young. In 1981 Shepherd became manager of the Alaska Marine Highway System's terminal in Seattle.

His family wrote that he was a born entertainer as demonstrated by his early performances in Arthur Miller's classic "An Enemy of the People" and his salesman role in the Juneau production of "Hootch-n-oo & Hotcakes."

Shepherd is survived by his wife of 43 years, Karla Jean Shepherd; daughters Kari McWhirter, Kimberlie Shepherd and Kameron Lyne; sons-in-law Anthony McWhirter and Michael Lyne; grandchildren Katie and Rachel McWhirter, Chanel and Cian Sobrepena, and Nolan Richard Lyne; sister Cherie Brownlee; nieces Lisa Santini and Dana Rush; and nephews Michael Shepherd and Robert Baugher.

Evelyn Adeline Porter

Minnesota resident Evelyn Adeline Porter, 60, died May 29, 2001, in Fargo, N.D.

Adeline was born Sept. 5, 1940, to Andrew Sr. and Matilda "Paul" Gamble in Juneau. She graduated from Sheldon Jackson High School in Sitka and went on to attend Haskell Indian Jr. College in Lawrence, Kan. On Feb. 17, 1961, she married Fred "Pat" C. Porter Sr. Adeline worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for more than 17 years, retiring in 1987. She also worked with the White Earth Suicide Prevention Program and later worked part time at the Village Store in Naytahwaush, Minn.

Adeline enjoyed going to the casino, playing bingo, traveling, watching her grandchildren play sports, and being around friends and family. Children were the love of Adeline's life.

She was preceded in death by her father, Andrew Gamble Sr.; her husband, Fred; her son Raymond; her daughter Deanna Porter; her brother Ivan Gamble and sister Andrea Eames.

She is survived by her mother Matilda Gamble of Alaska; her son Fred (Sharon) C. Porter Jr. of Minnesota; her daughters Tracy (Russ) Lynn Porter and Patricia Jo Porter both of Minnesota; her brothers Andrew Gamble Jr. of Angoon, Melvin of Wasilla and Gerald (Cindy) of Craig; sisters Henrietta Jean (David) Hogue of Washington and Georgina (Joe) Evans of Angoon; 11 grandchildren, two of whom she raised, Sonny and Jessica; one great-grandchild; her nieces, nephews, and special cousins Fenton and Ida James of Juneau.

Kenneth G. Shudshift

Kenneth G. Shudshift, 75, died Aug. 21 of a heart attack at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. He was born in Douglas on Sept. 26, 1925. Services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 3818 South Angeline Street in Seattle, about one block east of Rainier Avenue in the Columbia City area. Steve Perry

Steve Perry, also known as Michael McKay, died July 26, 2001. His birth name was David Randall Blair.

He was born July 30, 1965, in Ketchikan. Perry was raised in Saxman and spent most of his life in Southeast Alaska. A 1984 Juneau-Douglas High School graduate, he was a member of the Eagles 162.

He was interested in learning about religion and attended several churches in his search for knowledge, his family said. Most recently, he attended the 7th Day Adventist, Salvation Army and the Pentecostal Church of God.

Perry liked to travel and loved playing darts, his family said. He was on several dart teams in Ketchikan and had his own team for the Westmark Cape Fox Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Reynold Denny Sr. and Mary Denny, uncle Reynold Denny Jr. and aunt Anna Williams.

He is survived by his mother, Ernestine Blair; siblings Ernestine Ellis, Marilyn Blair, Raymond Blair Jr., Denny Blair Sr., Clifford Blair and Luann Blair; cousins Linda Williams, Pamela Sheakley and Rey Denny; nephew Paris and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were David Reynold Blair, Joel Buchanan, Larry DeWitt, Lloyd Jackson, Christopher Phillips and Harvey Shields.

Honorary Pallbearers were Robert Major, John Major, David Jenson, Howard Smith, Larry Johnson Jr. and Albert Jackson.

A memorial service was held Aug. 1, 2001, and a funeral service was held Aug. 2, 2001, both in Saxman. Perry is buried at the Bayview Cemetery.

Andrea De La Cruz Niere

Forty-year Juneau resident Andrea De La Cruz Niere died June 22, 2001, in Juneau.

She was born Nov. 30, 1931, in Cebu City, Philippines.

She worked for Alaska Laundry and Dry Cleaning and the state of Alaska. She enjoyed watching movies, cooking, playing bingo and socializing. Niere liked to be around people, catching up with old friends or making new ones, her family wrote.

She is survived by her son Rory Niere of Juneau; daughters Carmen (and husband Michael) Piccolo of Washington and Conchita (and husband James) McKnight of Juneau; sister Virginia Malalang of Juneau; brother-in-law Virgil Malalang; grandchildren Angie and Frankie Picolo and Sammy McKnight; and nieces Marivic Meyer and Marisa Dunlap.

A viewing will be held at the Alaskan Mortuary & Memorial Park from 4 to 7 p.m. June 28. Funeral service will be held at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 1:30 p.m. June 29. Burial will be held at the Alaska Mortuary & Memorial Park immediately following the funeral service. A reception will be held at the Filipino Community Hall.

Pallbearers at the service are Virgil Malalang, Dan Malalang, James McKnight, Michael Piccolo, Vince Yadao and Jason Wilson. Honorary pallbearers are Danny Corpuz, Joe Canon and Hildo Malalang.

Sheryl Kathleen Barcus-Ballweber

Former Juneau resident Sheryl Kathleen Barcus-Ballweber, 47, died June 25, 2001, in Lebanon, Ore. She was born in Juneau on March 4, 1954, and graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1973. She married Terry Ballweber on April 18, 1998, in Carnation, Wash.

She was a Christian and belonged to the Carnation Bible Study and Rainbow Girls. She was a member of the Dart League and loved to read, make ceramics, study the Bible, throw darts, take walks, play with grandchildren, dance and crochet.

She is survived by her husband Terry of Lebanon; sons Dustyn Barcus and Travis Pressey of Oregon; stepsons Tommy Ballweber and Steven Ballweber of Oregon; daughters Melissa Renfrow and Stephanie Pressey of Oregon; seven grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her parents Paul and Margie Willett and Kathy Hanninen and Don Barcus; brother Paul E. Barcus of Homer and sisters Mary McFall of Washington and Pamela Dunker of Juneau.

Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. June 29 in the Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel on 14431 Long St., Sweet Home, Ore. Interment will follow in the Lewis Cemetery. Viewing will be from 4 until 8 p.m. June 28 in the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions are suggested to help with funeral expenses.

Robert J. Geyer

Former Juneau resident Robert J. Geyer, 80, of Anacortes, Wash., died Jan. 29, 2001, in Anacortes.

He was born June 12, 1920, in Skagway, to Arthur and Ruth (Hawksworth) Geyer.

He was raised in Juneau and graduated from Juneau High School in 1940. After school he worked a number of jobs in Southeast Alaska. He made his way south to Seattle where he owned and operated a dry cleaning shop. In the late 1940s he moved to Reno, Nev., where he drove trucks and started his own trucking business. He retired in the early 1980s and moved to Anacortes.

He was preceded in death by his wife Clara in 1980. He is survived by his nephews John Storms and John Geyer of Washington and his niece Catherine McClelland of California.

Services were held Feb. 3 in Anacortes.

Donald Vent

Donald Ernest Vent died Oct. 3, 2001, in Wasilla.

Born Nov. 1, 1928, in Anvik, Vent attended Sheldon Jackson High School in Sitka. He attended aviation school in Spokane, Wash., and AMP mechanic school while in the merchant marine. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

He worked as a bush pilot, FAA-NTSB-Aviation Safety Inspector and an AMP mechanic. He received various awards, including the FAA Search and Rescue Medal for Heroism in 1975, the Yakutat Aviators Hall of Fame in 2001 and he represented aviation at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.

He enjoyed flying, fishing, hunting, guiding, cooking, spending time with his grandchildren and friends, and talking on the phone to friends and family throughout Alaska.

He is survived by daughters Theresa Vent of Anchorage, Charmaine Pattison and her husband Scott of Wasilla, Mischelle Kitter and her husband Eric of Wasilla; son Albert Porter of Juneau; ex-wife Sandy Vent of Sitka; brother Bobby Vent and his wife Mary of Huslia; and many grandchildren, friends and relatives in the Interior.

A memorial service was held Oct. 8 at the Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla. Another service will be held at the ANB Hall in Yakutat on Oct. 29 and 30.

Edwin John Stier

Edwin John Stier died Oct. 10, 2001, in Juneau.

He was born Nov. 13, 1941, in Oregon City, Ore. In 1966, he received his bachelor's degree from Oregon State University, and in 1968 he moved to Juneau, where he worked in personnel and labor relations for the state.

Family and friends say he loved Alaska and enjoyed nature photography, carving, carpentry and walking his springer spaniels.

He is survived by wife Marcia Stier, Juneau; son Eric Stier, Portland, Ore.; mother Eileene Proffitt, Milwaukie, Ore.; and brother Tom Stier, Bremerton, Wash.

At the request of the deceased, no services will be held. Donations may be made in Stier's name to the charity of the donor's choice.

Maj. Gen. Edward G. Pagano

Former Juneau resident Maj. Gen. Edward G. Pagano, 74, died Jan. 20, 2001, in Anchorage.

Gen. Pagano was born April 22, 1926, in Unga, Alaska. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944, serving in the Pacific Theater and the invasion of Okinawa, where he earned the Bronze Star with V Device and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in December 1946.

He earned a degree in business administration from the San Francisco State College in 1952. In 1954, he enlisted in the Alaska Army National Guard, serving in Kodak and Anchorage, and in 1964 was transferred to Juneau as the operations and training officer of the Alaska Army National Guard. In 1966 he returned to active duty in the Army. He was named state director for the Selective Service System in 1971.

In 1982 he retired as a colonel and was appointed Alaska adjunct general of the Alaska National Guard. He retired from this position in 1986.

Gen. Pagano was a recipient of the Governor's Award in 1987. He also received numerous military awards.

He was affiliated with the Boy Scout Council, Armed forces YMCA Board, VFW, American Legion, Elks, Rotary, Association of the U.S. Army, Reserve Officers Association and the National Guard Officers Association.

He is survived by his wife Rosemary and sons Milton Pagano and Frank Pagano, all of Anchorage; daughter Robyn Winter of Virginia; step-son Jim Donahue of Novato, Calif.; step-daughter Beth McNaughton of Anchorage; brothers Milton Pagano of Kodiak and Frank Pagano of Anchorage; sisters Vivian Beukers of Edmonds, Wash., and Gladys Rosier of Juneau; half-brothers August Heitman of Anchorage and L. Patrick Heitman of Kodiak; half-sisters Merle Gundlach of Eugene, Ore., Dodie Heitman of Auburn, Wash., Sally McLaughlin of Nevada and 11 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held Jan. 25 in Anchorage.

Vincent Yadao Sr.

Longtime Juneau resident Vincent P. Yadao Sr. died Feb. 28, 2001, at his home in Juneau surrounded by his family. He was 90.

He was born April 5, 1910, in Camiling Tarlac, Philippines. He immigrated to the United States at 17 and learned the value of hard work in the sugar cane fields of Hawaii and fruit fields of California. Cannery work brought him to Alaska and he settled in Juneau and raised a family.

His family wrote that he was an adventurer and loved to travel. He often spoke of his fond memories of Chicago and his love for Frank Sinatra's music. He entertained his grandchildren by playing harmonica and with stories of his adventures and his boxing days.

He was preceded in death by his parents Pedro and Eduarda Yadao, his sisters Gabina and Mercedes, and his brothers Mauro, Pascual, Silveriano and Abraham Yadao.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Eufemia S. Yadao, his children Carolyn Yadao (and Jesse Licon) of California, Debby Tomaro (and Paul) and Vincent P. Yadao Jr., (and Anna) of Juneau; grandchildren Justin Licon, Linsey and Dillon Tomaro, Vanessa, Joshua and Anthony Yadao, his sister Monica Yadao and brother Alfredo Yadao (and family) of the Philippines, brother Juan Yadao (and family) of Juneau and numerous nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Alaskan Mortuary. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Cathedral of the Nativity Catholic Church.

Pallbearers will be Taurino, Leo and Efren Yadao, Mauricio Orley, Monico, Bernie, Arnold and Alex Carrillo Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Juan, Alfredo and Romy Yadao Sr., Mariano and Alfonso Soriano, Isabelo Bautista, Rey Jose and Alex Carrillo Sr.
