Leslie M. Flores

Juneau resident Leslie M. Grasiela Flores died May 28, 2002, in Juneau.

She was born April 23, 2002, in Juneau.

She is survived by her mother, Iliana Lopez; father, Eustaquio Flores; and half sister, Erica Flores.

John F. "Oreo" Winninghoff

Former Juneau resident John F. Winninghoff died June 14, 2001, in Billings, Mont.

He was born March 5, 1945, in Butte, Mont. He graduated from Granite High School in 1963 and then attended Western Montana College.

Winninghoff worked as a miner for 38 years in Washington, Nevada, Colorado, Alaska and Montana, including a stint at Greens Creek mine on Admiralty Island. He loved fishing, camping, hunting, harvesting mushrooms, and collecting rock specimens.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Wilber and Elizabeth Winninghoff, and sister, Mary Catherine.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his children and their families, Carma and Wayne Wittwer of Stevensville, David Ray and Janet of Texas, Beth Ann Winninghoff of Missoula; his ex-wife, Ann Winnighoff of Missoula; his three grandchildren, Kendra, Sheldon and Colton Wittwer.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. June 22 in the Granite High School Gymnasium in Philipsburg, Mont.

Daisy Myrick

Longtime Juneau resident Daisy Myrick died June 2, 2001, at Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau.

She was born June 17, 1916, in Kake.

She and her husband James moved to Juneau in 1956 from Kake so their children could attend Juneau-Douglas High School. For the past several years, she was the primary caregiver for her disabled husband.

She was a member of the Kake ANS, and was a Sealaska and Goldbelt shareholder. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, cooking and playing bingo. She had many friends and was loved and respected by all who knew her, her family wrote.

She is survived by her husband James E. Myrick; her children Clarence Jackson of Kake, Patricia Antioquia of Vancover, Wash., Christina Henning of Juneau and Kathleen Myrick of Spokane, Wash.; her grandchildren Clarence Jackson Jr., Leisa Jackson, Jeffrey Jackson, Dale Jackson, Deanne Antioquia, Melanie Greer, Todd Antioquia, George Montero Jr., Michael Montero, James Montero, Trisha Montero, Chad Peery and Ryan Peery; her great-grandchildren Corey Jackson, James Jackson, George Montero III and Kyley Peery; her brothers and sisters Raymond Jackson, Lena Skeek, Lorena Davis, Martha Williams, Tilly Jackson and Frances Williams; and her numerous other relatives.

Memorial services were held at the Northern Light United Church on June 4 at 1 p.m. and at Kake Community Center on June 6 at 1 p.m.

Pallbearers were Clarence Jackson Jr., Jeffrey Jackson, Clarence Antioquia, Todd Antioquia, James Fenton and George Montero Jr. The honorary pallbearers were Charles Abbot, Gene Wald, Cyric George and Greg Gallant.

J.C. 'Red' Tomlinson

Juneau resident J.C. "Red" Tomlinson died May 29, 2001.

He was born Aug. 20, 1922, in Wapello, Iowa. In 1940 he joined the Navy and served as a signalman in World War II.

He attended the School of Mines in Socorro, N.M., and graduated from Tulsa University in 1954 with a B.S. in chemistry. He was working for a refinery in Tulsa, Okla., when he met Virginia Smith. They were married on July 9, 1955. In 1958, he began working for Philco as an electronics technician.

In 1969, he began working for the Federal Aviation Administration in Alaska, and lived in Unalakleet, Moses Point, Sisters Island, Kotezebue, Fairbanks, Cold Bay, Anchorage and finally Juneau. He retired from federal service in 1986, and worked for the state ferry system as an oiler and engineer until he retired in 1994.

He was affiliated with the Mt. Juneau Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Nile Shrine. He served as master of the Mt. Juneau Lodge for three years and was a 33rd degree Mason. In 1981 he joined Eastern Star and served twice as Worthy Patron. He took great interest in the Rainbow Girls organization and was serving as Rainbow Dad when he died.

He is survived by his wife Virginia; his brother Bruce of California; his daughter Nina of North Pole; his son Nels and his grandchildren Conway and Constance, all of Indiana.

William John Cullinane

William John Cullinane, 57, died June 26, 2001, in Hillsborough, Calif.

A native of Omaha, Neb., Cullinane attended Craghton University graduating with a B.A. in history and English. He continued his education at the University of Hawaii eventually earning a master's degree.

Cullinane became a teacher at Boystown in Omaha, Neb., and later at the University of Sydney. He also worked as a Democratic campaign manager and became co-owner of Inn at the Waterfront in Juneau. A lover of food, wine and life, he will be greatly missed, his family wrote.

He is survived by his children Kevin Cullinane, Don Christopher Cullinane, Sean Cullinane and Tim Mangiameli; sister Joann Cullinane Halda; brothers Tim Cullinane and Tom Cullinane; grandchildren Kristina Cullinane, Rachel Cullinane, Madison Cullinane, Aliya Cullinane and Jack Cullinane; daughters-in-law Michelle Cullinane and Lisa Wiegner Cullinane; and devoted partner Ann House of Juneau.

A funeral Mass is planned for 9:30 a.m. June 29 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church at 1 Notre Dame Ave., San Mateo, Calif. Interment will be at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society 1720 S. Amphlett, No. 220 San Mateo, Calif., 99402.

Thomas Whiteside

Former Juneau resident Thomas "Bud" C. Whiteside died June 16, 2001.

He was born April 14, 1914, in Powell, Mo. Whiteside was well traveled in Alaska and worked as a merchandise broker for many years. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his wife Grace and son Thomas Edward.

He is survived by his two brothers, Curtis Whiteside of Phoenix, Ariz., and James Whiteside of Burlingame, Calif.; his two sisters, Bess Stuth of Kirkland, Wash., and Marjorie Cragg of Bellevue, Wash.; and six nieces and nephews.

He will be laid to rest next to his wife and son at the Sunset Mausoleum in Berkeley, Calif.

Marion Ray McConnell

Former Juneau resident Marion Ray McConnell, 80, died May 2, 2002, in Renton, Wash.

He was born Jan. 30, 1922, in Centralia, Wash. He married Darline Ronald in 1943, was widowed in 1991 and lived in Bremerton the last 11 years. He was in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then worked at PSNS as a design engineer. He was a member of the Elks and Eagles, and he enjoyed golfing, camping and traveling.

He is survived by his daughter Marian Helgeson of Ravensdale, Wash.; brother Robert W. McConnell of Wrangell; and grandchildren Rick Owen of Kent, Wash., Cari Owen of Monroe, Wash., and Nancy Busch of Oregon City, Ore.

Roy D. Strange

Roy D. "Pooner" Strange died at the Juneau Pioneers' Home on July 8, 2001.

Strange was born July 4, 1923, to Roy and Inez Strange in Tumwater, Wash. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. When he returned to Tumwater after the war, he worked for the Olympia Brewing Co., first on the bottling line and later as an engineer.

In 1961 he and his wife Tessie moved their family to Alaska where they lived in Juneau, Douglas, Elfin Cove and Sitka. Strange worked several years for the Juneau Water Department, owned and operated the fish packer MV Kasilof and the Standard Oil fuel dock in Elfin Cove, and ran a research vessel for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The couple lived in Sitka for two years while he was working for the Department of Fish and Game.

After retirement, they traveled in their motor home visiting friends and relatives. Strange enjoyed golf and in his younger years was a hunter, fisherman, mechanic and was known to family and friends as a person who could fix anything.

He was preceded in death by his wife and son Mike.

He is survived by his son Don (and wife Beth) Strange of Olympia, Wash.; daughters Val (and husband Ron) Lind and Betty (and husband Jim) Abel of Juneau; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., July 21, 2001, at the Forest Funeral Home and Cemetery in Olympia. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Juneau Pioneers' Home Foundation, c/o 4675 Glacier Highway, Juneau, Alaska, 99801, specifically for the enhancement of a safe walking area for residents.

James Parto Vernon

Juneau resident James Parto Vernon, 36, died Jan. 3, 2003, in Juneau of natural causes.

James was born March 31, 1967, in Olongapo City, Philippines. He was the son of retired Navy officer Richard John Vernon of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Juanita Parto Climacosa. He moved to Alaska in 1991, residing in Sitka before moving to Juneau in 1992.

Vernon was known by family, friends, and even strangers for his friendliness, goofy sense of humor, and his immense generosity, his family said. Many describe him as having a big heart because he always placed others' needs before his own. His family said he was a great son, brother, friend, confidant, father, and mahjong player. He was well loved for his kind-heartedness and will be greatly missed by friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Teodoro Climacosa.

He is survived by his longtime girlfriend, Gina Gonzales; his 20-month-old son, Dylan Richard Vernon; stepson Charles Edward Creekpaum, mother Juanita Parto Climacosa of Olangapo, Philippines; father Richard John Vernon of Pittsburgh; brother Robert Parto of Juneau; sisters Mutya, Jenethe, Crisanta and Pinay of Olangapo City, Philippines; Nanay Esing (Gina's mother), Marites (Gina's sister), and nieces Donna and Marianne de la Paz, all of Juneau.

There will be a viewing 6-9 p.m. Jan. 9-10 at Alaskan Memorial Park and Mortuary. A memorial celebration of his life will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at St. Paul's Catholic Church. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Tony Dummer and a meal will follow. Those wishing to express condolences are welcome to attend the viewing or memorial service.

Andrew L. Robinson

Andrew L. (Andy) Robinson died at his home on Fox Island, Wash., Dec. 17, 2000.

Robinson was born Dec. 8, 1914, in Greeley, Colo. He lived in Juneau with his wife Freida from 1945 to 1976. They owned and operated Robinson's Men's Wear until retirement in 1976, when they moved to Fox Island.

Robinson was a lifetime member of the Elks. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, sports and his dog, Meggie. His family wrote that he will be remembered as a very special husband, father, grandfather and friend. He and Frieda celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 19, 2000. He is survived by Frieda of Fox Island, Wash.; his son Charles and daughter-in-law Judy of Juneau; his son Freddie of Kihei, Hawaii; and grandsons Tom of Seattle and Mike of Juneau.

Donations may be made in his memory to: The Dialysis Fund, Bartlett Regional Hospital, 3260 Hospital Drive, Juneau, AK 99801; or to the American Heart Association.

Evelyn Mae Crass

Longtime Juneau resident Evelyn Mae Crass, 91, died Jan. 3, 2001, at the Juneau Pioneers' Home.

She was born May 25, 1909, in Milwaukee, Wis., and grew up in Wisconsin. She married at age 17. She was living in Tacoma, Wash., with her husband Earl and son Earl Jr. in 1940 when they bought a 40­foot wooden boat, the Emma B, loaded all their worldly possessions aboard and cruised north. They lived in Ketchikan for about a year, and in the summer of 1942 came to Juneau. They lived aboard the Emma B for two years.

In the late 1940s, she and her family remodeled a home at Third and Gold Streets into a five­unit apartment, which they managed and lived in for many years. She worked as a homemaker and for many years was a waitress at the Baranof. She dedicated her life to homemaking, her son said.

She is survived by her son Earl J. Crass Jr. of Fairbanks, and grandsons Gary of New Jersey, Kevin of Detroit, Mich., and Tom Crass of Fairbanks, and by six great grandchildren, Scott, Christina, Kevin Jr., Misty Ann, Richard and Natily Crass.

There were no memorial services.

Jeffry B. Neal II

Former Juneau resident Jeffry Bryan Neal II, died Jan. 16, 2001, at his home in Anchorage

Neal was born in Juneau on July 22, 1983. He lived in Juneau until 1990 when he moved to Anchorage, where he resided with his HOPE Cottage Community Services family until his death.

His family wrote, "Jeffry was an incredible example to us all. He continually fought hard and smiled through his life. Jeffry made people reach deep inside and find the best in themselves."

Neal was preceded in death by his uncle Jeffry B. Neal.

He is survived by his mother Doris Chelini; his step-father Todd Chelini; brother Zachary and sister Tori Briane, all of Murrieta, Calif.

He is also survived by his grandparents, Jim and Loretta Neal and Ron Hildre, all of Juneau; grandmother Lynn Hildre of Hot Springs, Ark.; great-grandmother Doris Briehn of Stamps, Ark., and many aunts and uncles and numerous cousins.

Services will be held today in Anchorage. There will a memorial service in Juneau at noon, Saturday at Chapel by the Lake, 10014 Auke Lake Way.

The family asks that no flowers be brought to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations to HOPE Community Resources, 540 W. International Rd., Anchorage, 99518.
