Richard David Kay Mills

Kake resident Richard David Kay Mills, 14, died in a boating accident, along with his father, Rick, and a close family friend.

He was born April 6, 1989, in Petersburg to Judith Joanne Woods Mills and Richard "Rick" David Mills. He was adopted into the Kaachiadi Clan (Was'eeneidi yadi) and was given his Tlingit name, Lahaash, by Ruth Demmert.

Little brother of Rae Anne and big brother of Johnny and Chelsea, he lived in Kake all his life. His early affinity for computers was one of the many interests he shared with his father. A freshman this year, he joined the basketball, cross-country and wrestling teams. He took sixth in regionals for his weight class in wrestling. A new passion in his life was learning to drive, and he enjoyed cruising the roads of Kake. He was active in the church and went with the Presbyterian youth group to Hawaii last summer.

"He always needed a morning hug from his mom to start the day, " said family members. "He could often be found at his dad's elbow, learning about mechanics, carpentry, fishing or hunting. In addition, David shared a love of all sports with his dad, whether he was a participant or a spectator. In fact, no sport was safe for David's enthusiasm. He cheered with equal fervor for the Demolition Derby, NASCAR races, a 'grand salami' or a well-executed cannon ball.

"He loved to listen to music and knew all the words to the oldies on 97.3 KBSG. He had a passion for video games; his current favorites were Grand Theft Auto, Need for Speed and Gran Turismo 3.

"His other loves included his pet turtle, Sapphire, spending summers in the swimming pool and tormenting his younger brother and the girls in his class. David was always thinking; one of his great inventions was duct tape pants. (He was still working on the fine details.)"

He was survived by his mother, Judith; siblings, Patricia RaeAnne, Jonathan Hauoli and Chelsea Jo; grandmother and grandfather, "Grammy" Bonnie and "Poppa" Richard Woods; aunts, Patty Kay Mills, Pamela Jo Lopez, Cheryl (Tony) Tabor and Becky (Larry) Lamb and Peggy (Myron) Igtanloc; uncles, Mark (Linda) Mills, Elmo Kay Mills Jr., Robert Dell (Isabel) Mills and Ronald Dell Mills; and numerous cousins. Special people in his life were his uncle, Reggie; "Aunt" Susan; Kathy and Eric Gebhart; best friends, Michael DeBell and Tony Mach; and his classmates, wrestling buddies from Southeast, girlfriend Kristine Blossum and other friends too numerous to name.

A Juneau memorial service was held Jan. 5 at Chapel by the Lake. A Kake memorial service was held Jan. 6. Funeral services and a thank you dinner for Gery Davies and Rick and David Mills were held Jan. 7 in Kake.
