Maria Paige Lane

Former Juneau resident Maria Paige Lane died Dec. 30, 1999, at her home in Cookeville, Tenn., following an extended illness.

She was born Sept. 11, 1995, in Juneau, to Andrew Preston and Angelic Maria Reid Lane. She left Juneau when she was about a year and a half old.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather Preston Lane and her great-grandmother Evelyn Reid.

She is survived by her parents, her grandmother Julie Nowlin Lane, uncle John Taylor Lane and her brother Preston, all of Cookeville, Tenn., grandparents Steven H. and Lynda Joyce Reid of Juneau, great grandparents Ernest and Bunny Dohrman of Anchorage, aunt Susan Paige Lane of Ohio and numerous great aunts and uncles.

Services were held Sunday in Tennessee.

Memorials may be made in her name to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, 2424 Garland Ave, Nashville, TN, 37212, for clinical study on Wilm's tumor research.

Rosaline (Rose) Beierly Patterson

Longtime Juneau resident Rosaline (Rose) Beierly Patterson died Dec. 10, 1999, in Seattle from leukemia.

She was born June 30, 1942, in Juneau, and lived most of her life in Juneau. She lived in Sitka for five or six years, returned to Juneau in the mid 1980s.

She was preceded in death by her sister Roberta Beierly, her father Robert P. Beierly Sr., grandparents Minnie and Eli Howard and by her son David A. Pittman in October.

She is survived by her children Tom L. Pittman VII of Anchorage, Dan Pittman, Jody Pittman and Jimmie Patterson of Seattle, step-children Rena, Valerie and Eric Patterson of California and Washington, her mother Ida Beierly, brother Robert P. Beierly II of Juneau and Josephine Armstrong of Washington, six grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relations.

She was a shareholder in Shee Attika, Sealaska and a member of Tlingit and Haida Community Council.

Memorial services will be held 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Tlingit and Haida Community Building. Services will be combined with the memorial services for her son, who also died recently.

A funeral service and spreading of ashes will take place in the spring in Juneau.

Anita Mary Williams

Juneau resident Anita Mary Williams died Jan. 2, 2000, in Seattle. Memorial services and a full obituary will follow.

Margaret Roehr Ellis

Margaret "Peg" Emily Roehr Ellis died Jan. 11, 1998, at her home in Ketchikan. She was 90.

She was born in Warwick, N.Y., on August 10, 1907, and moved to Alaska in the early 1930s with her husband, Bob Ellis. She managed the family business, Ellis Air Transport, and was very active in the community.

She is survived by her son Michael, son Peter, and Peter's wife Roz, all of Ketchikan; her daughter Sabra and husband Dr. Wayne Jenkins, both of Sitka; her granddaughter Marzette and husband Geoffrey Simmonds with their children Sabra and Jared, and her granddaughter Janette and husband Kevin Miller with their children Ellis and Alec, all of Ketchikan; her granddaughter Brigette and husband Martin Oliver with their children Brian and Lisa, and her grandson Michael "Mick" Ellis and his good friend Catherine Page, all of the Seattle area; her granddaughter Cassie and husband Arnie Johnson and her granddaughter Margaret "Mitzi" Ellis and fiancee Jason Bookman, all of Anchorage; her granddaughter Ramie Dawn Ellis of Fairbanks; her granddaughter Sabrina and husband Ty Barkhoefer with their son Robert, and her granddaughter Roz Jenkins, all of Sitka; Nephew Jason G. ``Jay" Ellis and wife Mary Lee with their children Leanne, Karla and Terri, all of Juneau; and many great- grandchildren, acquaintances and friends.

The family will hold a private service at a later date. Memorials or charitable donations may be sent to the Bob Ellis Aviation Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 9412, Ketchikan, AK 99901.

Raymond A. Davidson

Former Juneau resident Raymond A. Davidson, 76, died March 16, 2001, at his mother-in-law's home in Snohomish, Wash., after a brief illness.

He was born Oct, 7, 1924, in Port Angeles, Wash., to James and Phoebe (Gaboury) Davidson. He attended Port Angeles schools and graduated in 1943. After three years in the U. S. Navy, he married Ardella Kettel in 1947, then graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 1951 with a degree in accounting.

The family, with three daughters, moved to Juneau in 1964, where he took a job with the State of Alaska Veteran's Affairs. He later worked with Health & Social Services and D. O. T.

After retiring in 1980 he built a cabin on Shelter Island and enjoyed fishing and boating. His marriage to Audrey Mickels in 1986 renewed his interest in gardening and together they created a showplace yard. Fishing, boating, church and traveling occupied their retirement years. Ray always felt blessed to live in Alaska and experience life on the last frontier. He loved to retell tales of hunting trips and always looked forward to catching more and bigger fish. His family wrote that he was especially close to his step-daughter Beni White during his last few months.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Ardella and oldest daughter Beth.

He is survived by his wife Audrey, daughters Jo Ann (and Gary) Hutchison of Idaho, Wendy (and Curtis) Blackwell of Juneau; son-in-law Conrad Seibel of Idaho, siblings Vivian (and Terry) Russell, Darold (and Bonnie) and Mel (and Arlene) all of Washington; grandchildren Jacob and Kari Seibel, Mica and Kyle Hutchison and Tyler and Jesse Blackwell. Also his mother-in-law Rosa Schenaker, step-daughter Beni White; step-grandchildren Charlie and Eric White, all of Snohomish, Wash.

Memorial services will be held March 31 at Snohomish Presbyterian Church. A Juneau memorial will be 2 p.m. April 28 at Chapel by the Lake.

At his request, his ashes will be scattered at his favorite fishing grounds.

Harold Zenger Sr.

Harold H. Zenger Sr. died on Sunday, May 20, 2001, in Juneau.

A memorial service will be held at the Juneau Moose Lodge at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 26.

Gene Norton

Longtime Juneau resident Gene Norton died March 1, 2001, in Long Beach, Calif., while visiting relatives. He was 55.

A gathering and farewell toast will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Triangle Club in downtown Juneau.

He was born in Los Angeles. He came to Juneau in the early 1970s and was employed at many downtown restaurants and clubs as a cook and a bartender. He also worked in Pelican at Rosie's and lived for several years in Tenakee Springs, where he served as fire chief. Most recently, he was employed by Taku Taxi.

His friends wrote, "Gene had a great intellect and taught us many things, mostly to laugh at ourselves. He was a kind and loving friend and he was always there to help."

Donald E. Richter

Juneau resident Donald E. Richter died March 23, 2001, in Burney, Calif., after suffering a massive heart attack.

He was born Aug. 17, 1945, in Tacoma, Wash., and spent his youth in the Tacoma and Seattle areas. He graduated from West Seattle High School in 1963 and the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 1967 with a major in missions and aviation training.

He married Joanne Hegland in 1967. They came to Alaska as missionary church planters in 1973 with Baptist Mid-Missions. The last four years have been spent in Juneau in a team ministry at Bethany Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Richter, of Juneau and daughters Lisa Armstrong of Irkutsk, Russia, and Tammi Reid of Petersburg; his mother, Louise, and sisters, Diane, Linda and Vicki, who live in Washington. There are five grandsons.

A graveside service was held March 31 in Bremerton, Wash., and a memorial service was held April 1 at Gatewood Baptist Church in Seattle, where he had grown up and determined to serve in full-time ministry.

The family suggested any memorial gifts be sent to Baptist Mid-Missions, P.O. Box 308011, Cleveland, Ohio, 44130-8011, for Donald Richter Memorial Russian Church Fund.

Jeanne R. Martin

Former Juneau resident Jeanne R. Martin, 67, of Central Point, Ore., died March, 21, 2001, in Talent, Ore.

She was born in Montague, Mass., June 23, 1933, the daughter of Leona (Howard) and Philip A. Robert. She attended schools in Greenfield, Mass., graduating in 1951 from Greenfield High School.

In 1954, she moved to San Diego, Calif., where she was a legal secretary for several years. In 1978, she moved to Juneau, where she became executive secretary to the Tlingit-Haida Central Council. She later became secretary to Justice Allen Compton in Juneau and for a representative in the Alaska Legislature. Following retirement, she moved to Oregon.

While in Alaska, she was a volunteer for Hospice and Big Sisters, receiving the Alaska Big Sister of the Year Award. She was a member of the National Association of Legal Secretaries.

Martin was a foster parent and kept in contact with many of the foster girls who lived with her.

Besides her mother of Turners Falls, Ore., she is survived by a son, Paul Martin of Ashland, Ore.; a daughter, Virginia Hartnett of San Diego; a brother, David Robert of Squim, Wash.; a sister, Theresa Russell of Cumberland, Maine, three grandchildren, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A her request, services in Oregon were private.

Dorothy Ann Jorgensen

Longtime Juneau resident Dorothy Ann Jorgensen died March 5, 2001, in Sitka.

Services will be noon Saturday, March 24, at Northern Light Church.

She was born Nov. 5, 1948, in Juneau.

She grew up in Juneau and attended local schools, graduating from JuneauDouglas High School in 1967. She studied business at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and ran the mile in track.

Her Tlingit name was Shaaw-Daa-Geiy. She was a citizen of the Tlingit and Haida Nation and a tribal member of the Gaa Naax Teidi (Whale House) family from Klukwan. She was the daughter of the Killer Whale Fin House in Klukwan, and a Naakaani (in law) of the Thunderbird Clan.

She loved the outdoors and fishing, hunting, camping and the subsistence lifestyle. She enjoyed putting up Native food, berry picking and smoking salmon. As a girl in the 1960s, she fished for king crab with her dad, which they donated to Minnie Field's Children's Home. She sang and traveled with the original Juneau Native Prayer Group. She enjoyed skiing and biking. Her friends wrote that she was loyal and compassionate.

She was a shareholder in Goldbelt, Inc. and Sealaska Corp. She worked as a full-time mother, and as research consultant with Katzeek and Associates. She also worked with Sealaska Heritage Foundation, and helped develop the scholarship program there.

Her maternal grandparents came from St. George Island in the Pribilofs. Along with other Aleut families, they were forcibly relocated in the early 1940s from the Aleutians to Southeast Alaska.

She is survived by her husband Edwin Miller of Illinois, her children Margaret Ruth, Gabriel, Shaan Jiaa Eesh, Brian, Aaron J. and Israel G. Katzeek, all of Juneau and James, John and Jeremy Katzeek of Seattle, David Katzeek of Hoonah and Luke Katzeek of Anchorage; also her granddaughter Jamie Katzeek of Seattle; her sister Ida (and Gina) Darrow of Missouri, her brothers Robert Chercasen of Kansas, Dan (and Sue) Jorgensen and Gene Jorgensen of Juneau and George Jorgensen; her cousins Olga Makaily and Louise Cochran of Juneau; her nieces Christine Darrow of Missouri and Ursula Jorgensen of Juneau and nephews Bobbie Slauter, Jessie Darrow of Nebraska and Jason Prokopiof of New Mexico, and her grandparents Stefanida and Peter Prokopiof.

Her tribal relations include Tom and Smith Katzeek, Ruth Kasko and the late George Katzeek of Klukwan. Her Raven grandparents were the late James Klanott and Austin Hammond.

She was preceded in death by her mother Helen Prokopiof, her father Christopher Jorgensen and her other father Robert Louden, her brother William Prokopiof and James Katzeek.

Alexander Stevens II

Juneau resident Alexander T. Stevens II died March 13, 2001, of cancer at Bartlett Regional Hospital.

He was born Dec. 18, 1930, on Douglas Island. He was a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran and served during the Korean War. He was a commercial fisherman and a retired employee of the federal General Service Administration. After retirement he drove tour buses for Last Frontier Tours.

His hobbies were building and flying model airplanes. He was an avid pool player and a longtime bowler.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alexander A. Stevens, his mother, Bertha (Marshall-Stevens-Johnson), and his stepfather, Charles D. Johnson. He is survived by his sisters, Marge Ling, Dorothy Thornton and Katherine Miyasato, all of Juneau, and Lucielle Stevenson of Seattle; his children, Patricia Murchison, Angela Stevens, Dorothy Stevens and Samantha Des Armo, all of Anchorage, and Annette Ulmer, Alexander T. Stevens III and Roxanne Olvera of Juneau; also 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at Alaskan Mortuary and Memorial Park. Services will be 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Tlingit and Haida Hall on Hospital Drive. Pallbearers will be Gary Ulmer, Willis Marvin, Dan Peters, Eli Des Armo, Robert Dunlap and Leon Cain. Honorary pallbearers are Charles Brown, Paul Mureno, Charles Jack, Carl Marvin Jr., Leonard Bowman and George Stevens.

John E. Shibley

Juneau resident John Everett Shibley, 38, died Feb. 6, 2001 in Juneau. He was born Sept. 7, 1962, to Jim and Darlene Shibley in Rio Arriba County, N.M. He grew up near Abiquiu at the Ghost Ranch Conference Center, where his family lived from 1957 until 1995. He is a 1980 graduate of McCurdy Mission School at Santa Cruz, N.M., and a 1985 honor graduate of the Oregon State University School of Forestry. His career with the U.S. Forest Service included service in the New Mexico communities of Jemez Springs, Penasco and Taos, as well as Juneau.

His family regrets he did not learn depression management as well as he mastered sports, horse riding, computers, forestry and fixing mechanical things.

He was preceded in death by his mother and mother-in-law. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, formerly of Vadito, N.M.; daughter, Shannen Darlene, 7; son, James Daniel, age 19 months; brother, David, of Tulsa, Okla.; sister, Meg Broste of Albuquerque; father, Jim Shibley, and stepmother, Judy Shibley of Seminole, Texas; and numerous other relatives.
