Joseph Matthews Kahklen

Lifelong Alaska Native educator and former Juneau resident Joseph Matthews Kahklen (Tlingit name Saiche), 93, died in his sleep March 1, 2001, in Anchorage.

A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at Northern Light United Church and a celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. at the ANB Hall.

He was born Feb. 28, 1908, and raised in Kake. Demonstrating an early love of education, he left home after eighth grade to attend high school in Petersburg. He was on the basketball team that won the first All Alaska High School Basketball Championship in 1929 in Fairbanks, something of which he was very proud. He attended Central Washington College, earning a bachelor's degree in education. After working as a teacher and school administrator, he earned a master's degree in education from Northern Arizona University. For being a "respected educator and humanitarian, " he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from the University of Alaska Southeast.

His career spanned 45 years, serving as a teacher, principal and district superintendent. He and his wife, Vivian, were devoted to promoting equal opportunities in education for all Native people.

He was active in community organizations over the years serving as an elder in the Presbyterian Church, member of the Sealaska Heritage Foundation Scholarship Committee, and as a member of the Kake Tribal Corp. board. He assisted in a 1946 study by the Department of Interior documenting Southeast Alaska Native aboriginal land rights. This work laid the foundation for later settlement of Alaska Native Land rights issues.

He had many interests and talents. He had a trained tenor voice and sang for weddings and special events. He also passed on to his family his special knowledge of hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his son, Llewellyn Archie Kahklen. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Vivian Demmert Kahklen, son Joseph Kahklen, son Albert (and Florence) Kahklen, daughter Toni Kahklen-Jones (and Robert Jones); 19 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

May Key

Juneau and Ketchikan resident May Key died March 3, 2001, at her home in Juneau.

She was born May 3, 1920, in Blunt, S.D. She lived in Ketchikan for many years before moving to Juneau in May 2000. She was a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her daughters Mary Martin and Eileen Stacy of Ketchikan, Carol Bartlett of Juneau and Billie May Key of Brazil, and son Bill Key of Oregon, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services were March 6 at Chapel by the Lake.

Harold Zenger Sr.

Lifelong Juneau resident Harold H. Zenger Sr. died on May 20, 2001, in Juneau.

He was born in Juneau on March 9, 1922. He graduated from Juneau High School in 1940. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard beginning July 8th, 1942 and received an Honorable Discharge on Nov. 3, 1945.

Before his service in the Coast Guard, he worked on the Alaska Railroad as a laborer near Whittier. After the war he opened Zenger's Appliance Store in downtown Juneau. He also worked as an electrician, a radio repairman, and as a vessel captain for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Upon his retirement from Fish and Game, he founded North Pacific Aquaculture Development Corp. and developed a salmon egg incubator system that is used in Alaska and all over the world. He traveled extensively throughout Alaska, Canada, and Washington state assisting with the development of aquaculture systems. In the early 1990s he went to China to help the Chinese government set up a salmon hatchery near the Russia-China border using his incubation boxes.

He belonged to Moose Lodge #700 for many years and in 1998 received one of their highest honors, the Pilgrims Degree. He was also a member of Elks Lodge #420.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Zenger Sr.; his mother, Silva Zenger; and his brother Charles Zenger.

He is survived by his wife, Beth Floyd-Zenger of Juneau; his two sons Harold H. "Skip" Zenger Jr. of Bothell, Wash., and Don Zenger of Douglas; his two brothers, Alfred Zenger Jr. of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla., and Ned Zenger of Post Falls, Idaho; his first wife, Mildred Zenger of Auke Bay; his grandchildren Adam and Michelle Holland-Zenger of Juneau, Annie Zenger and Bil Rosky of Oceanside, Calif., Eloise Zenger and Nico Zenger of Bothell, Wash., Michelle D. Zenger of Douglas; his eight nephews, nieces, and their children.

A memorial service will be held at the Juneau Moose Lodge at 8335 Old Dairy Road at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 26.

Marguerite K. Doucette

Juneau resident Marguerite K. Doucette died May 22, 2001, at the Juneau Pioneers' Home.

She was born January 1, 1909, in Bettendorf, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

After graduating from school, she served as a housekeeper and a governess in Luxembourg and Belgium. Later she was employed by the American Embassy in Paris, France, by Ambassador and Mrs. James C. (Armour) Dunn. She trained in Paris as a Cordon Bleu chef, and moved to Juneau in 1941 when she was personally requested by Gov. Ernest Greuning to serve as the housekeeper and manager for the Governor's House. She was lauded by Sen. Bob Bartlett, who said, "Governors come and governors go, but Marguerite is always at the Governor's House." Gruening also praised her in his book "Many Battles."

She also worked as a clerk at Sully's Bakery and Carson Lawrence Bakery and was employed by the state Department of Revenue until her retirement in 1974.

She was an active member of several organizations in Juneau, including the Pioneers of Alaska, Auxiliary #6, Business and Professional Women, Perseverance Rebekah #26 IOOF, and Order of the Moose.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Katherine Kremer of Luxembourg; her brothers John and Louis Kremer of Luxembourg; her sisters Ruth, Mariette, Justine, and Aileen, of Luxembourg; and her husband Charles of Juneau. She is survived by her daughter Jeannette McLeod; her granddaughter Charlene Stanley; her grandson Charles McLeod Jr.; her sister Leone; and numerous nieces and nephews in Luxembourg.

In lieu of flowers it is requested that you donate to your favorite charity.

A reception in celebration of Marguerite's life will be held at the Juneau Pioneers' Home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 26.

Pilahio 'Philip' Ortelano

Pilahio "Philip" Ortelano of Petersburg and Juneau died Feb. 14, 2001, in Anchorage.

He was born Jan. 4, 1935, in Petersburg to Grace and Pilahio Ortelano into the Eagle, Thunderbird Shangukeidi Clan and the Kawdliyaayi Hit-House Lowered From the Sun. He lived and worked in Petersburg for most of his life and moved to Juneau in his later years.

Memorial Services will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Glacier Valley Church of God, 8497 Thunder Mountain Road. An ANB memorial and funeral services were held in Petersburg last month.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters Betty Marvin and Rosita Worl of Juneau, Marcelo and George Quinto of Anchorage and Frank Quinto of Washington, Mercedes Kanto and Carmen Plunkett of California, Ventura Samaniego of Seattle, Sandy and Joe Samaniego of Juneau, and Samuella Samaniego of Seattle, Rita Adams of Juneau, Frances Perkins of Seattle, Randolph Williams of Juneau and Randy Williams and Alex Jackson of Seattle. He is also survived by his nephews and nieces, Albert Perkins of Juneau and John Perkins of Seattle; Tom, David and Delfin Evenson of Petersburg, Raymond Evenson of Juneau and Cindy Evenson of Seattle; Philip Montemayor and Bob Valentine of Virginia, Celeste Worl of New Mexico, Rod Worl of Anchorage and Ricardo Worl of Juneau; James and Jennifer Quinto of Juneau; Joe and Michelle Quinto of Anchorage; Jaylene and Julian Quinto of Spokane, Wash.; Marcella, Judy and George Kanto and Doreen and Renee Peck of California; Michael and Misha Plunkett of California; Leeann, Anne, Santino, Nick, Bene, Joe, Tony Samaniego of Seattle and Brian and Erin Samaniego of Juneau; Aisha Adams of Juneau, Herman, Fred and Tony Perkins of Seattle and Rhonda, Mary, and Randy Williams of Juneau. His only surviving uncle is Paul Jackson of Seattle.

He was active in several churches in Petersburg, Juneau and Anchorage including the Juneau Prayer Group. He played his guitar every Sunday at the Glacier Valley Church of God. His family wrote that he was recognized for his superior talents in guitar and a voice that never failed him. He will be remembered as a loving, kindhearted and generous person who was gentle and pure in heart, and he greeted everyone with a smile.

He served in the National Guard and while on a maneuver in a remote area, his faith, strength and endurance served to win the Eisenhower Trophy Award for his unit. As a young "village" boy, he was curious and eager to see the bright lights of Anchorage and on a 24-hour pass he walked the 20 miles to Anchorage and back.

Florence Fox

Juneau resident Florence Fox died Feb. 18, 2001, in Anchorage.

She was born Nov. 22, 1926, in Hoonah.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Caroline Martin, her son Byrer Martin, her parents Frank and Minnie Johnson and her brother, Fr. Michael.

She is survived by her husband Edward Fox of Juneau, her children Walter Martin (and Misty) and Raymond Martin (and Nancy) of Texas, Frederick Johnson, Becky Fulkerson (and Jerry), Ramona Gerber and Marie Johnson, all of Juneau, Cynthia Johnson of Anchorage, Minnie Dalton (and Jimmie) of Hoonah and Arthur Johnson (and Jennifer) of California. Survivors also include 18 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Fulkerson, Jimmie Dalton, Bill Williams, Cleveland Burley, Kermit Ceasar and Fred Phillips. Honorary pallbearers will be Walter and Raymond Martin, Frederick and Arthur Johnson, Tom Siangco and Franklin Hotch.

Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Andrew Hope Building (ANB Hall).

Herluff R. Taug

Juneau resident Herluff R. Taug died Feb. 13, 2001, at the Mountainview Senior Center in Juneau.

He was born Jan. 27, 1928, in Killisnoo, Alaska. He was raised and schooled in Tenakee. He moved to Juneau in the late 1960s.

He was a fisherman and a member of Sealaska and Goldbelt corporations.

He is survived by his brother, Ole Taug; sister-in-law Mary; nephews Al, Ole and Ron of Juneau, Emil of New Orleans and Charles of Seattle; nieces Shirley, Barb and Emily of Juneau, and Florence of Lynnwood, Wash.; and many cousins and relatives in Juneau, Sitka and Angoon.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ole Taug and Florence Nelson, and brothers Frank Nelson and Emil Taug.

A service will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Salvation Army Hall at 439 West Willoughby Ave. Major Larry Frankhauser will officiate.

Forest Del Fennesy

Former Juneau resident Forest Del Fennesy died June 1, 2001, in Olympia, Wash.

He was born Dec. 4, 1905, in Oshkosh, Wis., and graduated from Oregon State University.

He moved to Juneau in 1932, where he worked as an electrician, drove a bus for Channel Bus Line and served in the Alaska National Guard during World War II. He also worked for the U.S. Forest Service.

He married Astrid Loken on Aug. 9, 1940. They moved to Seattle in 1949 and made their home in Ballard. He retired from the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1965 and from his job with the state of Washington in 1970.

He was a member of AYP, LOGN, Alaska Friends, IOOF and the Ballard Elks.

He was preceded in death by his wife Astrid.

He is survived by his son, Robert Fennesy and wife Krish; daughter Anna Case and husband Tom; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. June 16 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 6512 23rd Ave. NW, Seattle.

Easterphine Riley

Longtime Juneau resident Easterphine Riley, 82, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in New York, N.Y.

Friends and family are invited to attend her funeral and visitation at Alaska Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3839 Riverside Drive, Juneau. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18.

Victoria Jean Gunn

Longtime Juneau resident Victoria Jean Gunn, 58, died Feb. 4, 2004, at her home in Lacey, Wash.

She was born Aug. 14, 1945, in Ketchikan. She was a lifetime Alaskan, growing up in Ketchikan, living in Juneau the last 25 years, and just moved to Washington for medical reasons.

William 'Billy' Aceveda

Former Juneau resident William "Billy" Aceveda, 49, died Sept. 22, 2003, in Anchorage.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Salvation Army. A reception will follow. Funeral services will be held in Kake next week.

Daniel William Dugaqua Jr.

Former Juneau resident Daniel William Dugaqua Jr. died Feb. 19, 2001, in Anchorage.

He was born Aug. 12, 1950, at Mount Edgecumbe to Daniel William and Pauline Ida Dugaqua. He went to school in Kake, where he lived for much of his life. He lived in Juneau for about five years in the 1990s and then moved to Anchorage.

He worked as a commercial fisherman and he loved to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his sisters Paula Jean Hanlon and Delores Laverne Mazon of Juneau, Mary Ann Whip of Anchorage and Ernestine Dugaqua of Sitka, and brothers Kurt Keith Dugaqua of California and Stuart Wayne Dugaqua of Juneau.

Viewing will be noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the memorial service following at 2 p.m. at Alaskan Memorial Park Chapel, 3839 Riverside Dr. Pallbearers will be Mike, Sam, Ralph and Jim Knudson, James and Thomas Jack, Randy Johnson, Howard Gray, Michael Milligan and Gary See.
