Fenumiai Ilalio Sr.

Juneau resident Fenumiai ``Su'a" ``Paoa" Ilalio Sr. died May 26, 2000, surrounded by his family in his home.

He was born Dec. 21, 1928, in Western Samoa. He worked in the construction industry as a carpenter in Western and American Samoa. He was also a High Talking Chief in his Native home. In 1989, he moved to Juneau to be with his children and grandchildren. He loved to sing and play the guitar and ukulele. He enjoyed watching his family perform traditional Samoan dances.

He is preceded in death by his parents and daughter Tuileisu.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years Suasa'a and children Filomena Kele, Faleiva Manu'a, Lui (and wife Mona) Fenumiai and grandchildren Aliitasi, Lui Jr., Lyonel, Luina, Lawrence and LiAnne; Lio (and wife Julie) Fenumiai and grandchildren Lio Jr., Fiatamalii, Natasha and Gabrielle; Maria (and husband Tualauta, Jr.) Levale and grandchildren Caroline, Alofaifo and Fiatamalii, Alofaae (and wife Gail) Fenumiai and grandchildren Nicole, Brittany, and Phillip; Fenumiai Jr., (and wife) Terri Ilalio and grandchild Matthew all of Juneau; Fofoa (and husband Motusaga) Soi and their children Limala'u, Pi, Motu, Pona, Fuapepa, Faiga and Trinity of San Jose, Calif.; Remo (and wife Peka) Fenumiai and grandchildren Simona, Tuileisu, Reno Jr., Ituau, Rossie, Vaiana, Sandino and Travis of Samoa; and 22 great-grandchildren.

A viewing and rosary will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Catholic Church followed by a funeral mass at 2 p.m., and a graveside service at Alaskan Memorial Park. A reception will follow in the Parrish Hall of the church.

Pallbearers will be Lio Fenumiai Sr., Lui Fenumiai Sr., Reno Fenumiai, Alofaae Fenumiai, Fenumiai Ililio Jr., Tualauta Levale and Kalei Wery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in his name to Hospice and Home Care of Juneau, 3200 Hospital Drive, Juneau, Alaska, 99801.

Junia Marie Butler

Former Juneau resident Junia Marie Butler died April 25, 2000, in Colorado Springs, Colo., from cancer.

She was born April 1, 1928, in Calhan, Colo.

She lived most of her life in Colorado except for the three years she lived in Alaska. She first came to Juneau in 1978 and stayed two years. She then returned in 1981 for one year before relocating back to her home state. While in Juneau, she was an employee of the Alaska Power Administration. She also was an avid angler and loved to fish the waters of Southeast Alaska.

She is survived by her son Rodney Butler; two daughters Peggy Butler and Colleen Mowry; two brothers Jack and Gene Currier and her sister Evelyn Balsick all of Colorado.

Services were held at the United Methodist Church on April 28, 2000, in Calhan, Colo.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice, 825 E. Pikes Peak Avenue, Suite 600, Colorado Springs, Colo., 80903.

George Jackson

Burial services for lifelong Juneau resident George Jackson will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2000, at the Alaskan Memorial Park. Jackson died on March 21, 2000.

Pallbearers will be Timothy Lindoff, Dave Trego, Valentino Burratin, Leroy Marvin, John Shorty and Edward Baker.

Stephen Wilbur Lindoff

Lifetime Hoonah resident Stephen Wilbur Lindoff died July 31, 2000, in a logging accident in Hoonah.

He was born Sept. 13, 1966, in Mount Edgecumbe and baptized in the Pentecostal Church.

He was a graduate of Hoonah High School and Westcoast Training for heavy equipment. He worked as logger for many years and was employed by Whitestone Logging.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with this new son. He was a member of the Hoonah ANB Camp No. 12.

He was preceded in death by his father Wilbur Lindoff, aunt Mary Joanne Johnson and numerous other aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is survived by his mother Jennie Lindoff; sister Cathy Lindoff; nieces Roxanne and Suzanne Lindoff; girlfriend Crow Smith; son Stephen Aaron Smith-Lindoff; aunts Eva Davis and Esther Kaze; and uncle Wilbur W. James Sr., all of Hoonah; uncle John Lindoff of Juneau and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Pallbearers will be William Sanders, Sam Willard Sr., Bernard Wolfe, Thomas James, Wilbur W. James Jr., and Hubert Lindoff.

Honorary pallbearers will be Esther Kaze, Ruth James, John Lindoff, Tony Mills, Buster Davis, Richard Dalton Sr., and Karl Greenwald Sr.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, at the ANB Hall in Hoonah. The funeral service will be held at noon on Thursday at the same location.

Mark Luke Willard

Juneau resident Mark Luke Willard, 17, died June 5, 2000, in Juneau.

He was born July 20, 1982, in Haines and grew up in Klukwan and Juneau. He attended grade school in Klukwan and Haines, and attended Juneau-Douglas High School. He enjoyed arm wrestling, basketball, hiking with his friends and camping.

He is survived by his father Leonard Willard of Klukwan, his mother Lorena Hotch of Juneau, brothers Marvin Willard Jr., Kenneth, Sonny and Randy Willard of Juneau and Rudy Willard of Washington, sisters Marena, Corena and Kristena Willard and Yvonne Dennis, Marilyn Evenson of Juneau and Colleen Willard of Nevada, and numerous other relatives.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall in Juneau. Pallbearers will be Marvin Willard Jr., Kenneth Willard, Sonny Willard, Rudy Willard, Randy Willard, Frank Olsen and Jerome Dennis.

Gilbert Jackson

Juneau resident Gilbert Jackson died Jan. 25, 2000, at St. Ann's Care Center in Juneau.

He was born May 15, 1928, in Kake. He attended schools in Kake. He moved to Juneau in 1988.

He is survived by his sisters Maryann Quick of Juneau, Mildred V. Gagner of Satsop, Wash., and brothers William T. Jackson and Benjamin R. Jackson Sr., both of Juneau.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the Salvation Army church on Willoughby. The funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the same location.

Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 439 West Willoughby Ave., Juneau, AK, 99801.

Eugene Hazard Austrom

Juneau resident Eugene Hazard Austrom died April 30, 2000, at St. Ann's Care Center.

He was born June 2, 1913, in Poulsbo, Wash.

A retired commercial fisherman and rigger of Shop 72 in the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., Austrom moved to Juneau in 1995 with his companion, Frances Snyder. He enjoyed reading, taking walks around the capital city and recounting his commercial fishing experiences in Alaska and Puget Sound. Friends said he was a quiet, compassionate and generous man.

He is survived by his daughter Pam Mengal of Idaho; son Rick Austrom and granddaughter Melody of Bremerton, Wash.; and his companion Frances Snyder of Juneau.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, at St. Ann's Care Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to St. Ann's Care Center, 415 Sixth St., Juneau, Alaska, 99801.

Wesley Keith Ewing

Former Juneau resident Wesley Keith Ewing died May 2, 2000, in his home in Haines following a bout with lung cancer.

He was born July 19, 1933, in Larned, Kan., to Harold and Louise Ewing.

Ewing was a paratrooper in the 187th Army Airborne during the Korean War. Following an honorable discharge, he married his hometown sweetheart, Betty Cleveland, and the couple moved to Juneau in 1961.

Ewing worked as a mechanic and welder at Juneau Motors. After living in Juneau for a year, Ewing and his family moved to Haines where he worked variously as a mechanic, bartender and millwright at Connor's Motors, Marty's Pioneer Bar, Alex's Garage, Schnabel's Lumber Company, Northern Timber Corp. and the state road commission.

He was an active member of the Local 302 Operator's Union, Sitka Elks, Juneau Moose Lodge, Larned VFW and Haines Legion Post 12.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and his son, Charles.

He is survived by his wife Betty Ewing of Haines, children Patricia (and husband Dave) Peters of Haines; Joann (and husband Ken) Simpson of Juneau; David (and wife Kelly) Ewing of Camas Valley, Ore.; brothers Don (and wife Sandra) Ewing of Dallas and Boyd (and wife Janice) Vratil of Okla.; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many friends.

Services were held May 5, 2000, at Jones Point Cemetery in Haines.

Louis Neece

Juneau resident Louis Neece died May 4, 2000, on Prince of Wales Island.

He was born March 5, 1951, in Stevenson, Wash., and moved to Alaska in 1983.

Although he lived in Juneau, he worked throughout Southeast Alaska in the logging industry. Recently, he moved his residence to Craig.

He was an avid outdoorsmen who loved to hunt, fish and photograph the land and waters of the Panhandle. Friends spoke kindly of his laughter and gentle spirit.

He is survived by his father and step-mother John and Carol Neece; siblings Marguerite and Johnny Neece, Celia (and husband Glen) Lucuf, all of Stevenson, Wash.; former wife Susan Ballier of Hood River, Ore.; daughter Blossom of Bellingham, Wash.; and son Jacob of Maui, Hawaii.

A memorial and graveside service took place May 15, in Stevenson, Wash. A celebration of his life will take place in Craig and Juneau at a later date.

William Ernest Boehl

Douglas resident William Ernest (Bill) Boehl died Oct. 1, 2000, in his home.

He was born Dec. 11, 1914, in Orofino, Idaho, to Lewis Christian Boehl and Roxie Gleason Boehl. The family settled in Longview, Wash., where he spent most of his school years. He graduated from Longview High School in 1933, then studied forestry at the University of Washington.

Boehl married Lyle Meloda Andrews in Longview in 1938.

From 1942 to 1945, he helped build Army-Air Force bases in Alaska. In 1945, he moved his young family from Longview to Douglas and began a boat-building business. In the 1960s, he phased out boat-building and turned his talents toward general contracting. He formed a new company Island Builders, and during the next 20 years his company built many Douglas and Juneau area homes and commercial structures.

He served his community, territory and state for many years through active participation in local and state politics. He was mayor of Douglas for nine terms and served as a member of the first territorial Real Estate Commission and the First State Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.

He was a charter and life member of the Douglas Lions Club, a life member of the Juneau Elks, Mt. Juneau-Gastineau Masonic Lodge and Juneau Chapter Order of Eastern Star.

He was a lifelong, avid fisherman and hunter. He particularly enjoyed fishing and moose hunting on the Taku River. In the early 1970s, he and his wife built a cabin on their property on the Taku.

He is preceded in death by his wife. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Travis Robertson of Skandia, Mich., his son and daughter-in-law Richard and Barbara Boehl of Tracyton, Wash., sister Louise Brown of Sacramento, Calif., two grandchildren, David Boehl of Bellevue, Wash., and Susan Metcalf and three great-grandchildren, Ricky, Robby and Kate Metcalf all of Lakeville, Minn.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Douglas Community Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 21836, Juneau, 99802, or Hospice and Home Care of Juneau, 3200 Hospital Dr., Juneau, 99801.
