Lucy Marie Captain
Fairbanks, Alaska and Galena, Alaska

Lifelong Alaskan resident, Lucy Marie Captain, 47, died Friday, November 16, 2001 at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage.

Lucy was born March 6, 1954 to Henry and Esther (Wholecheese) Captain in Galena, Alaska.

She went to high school in Anchorage.

Throughout her life she lived in Galena, Ruby and Anchorage.

Lucy had a soft spoken voice with a loving heart; she loved everyone who made contact with her.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents Esther and Henry D. Captain; brothers, Patrick, Matthew, Leo and Harold Captain; sister, Patricia Captain and others.

Lucy is survived by her longtime companion, Michael Jacobs of Anchorage; son, Stan, Jr. and his wife, Carmelia Gurtler of Ruby/Fairbanks; son, Kevin and daughter, Esther who were adopted out; brother, Peter Captain, Sr. of Galena; sister, Lena “Deedee” and her husband Billy McCarty, Jr. of Ruby; nieces, Brenda McCarty and her companion, John Ambrose of Ruby, Dorothy Captain, Jennifer Captain and her companion Albert Attla, Nadine Captain all of Fairbanks; nephews, Willy McCarty III and his wife Mary Ann, Roger McCarty Sr. and his wife Rhonda of Ruby, Peter Captain Jr. of Fairbanks, Henry and Patrick Captain of Galena; numerous great nieces and nephews; uncle, Justin and his wife Mary Ann Patsy and family of Nulato; special cousin and best friend Linda Wholecheese McKinney and family of Fairbanks; cousins, Jackie Wholecheese of Huslia, Veronica Wholecheese of New York and George Wholecheese of Galena, Peter Wholecheese of Fairbanks and numerous friends throughout the state.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 18, 2001 at the Charles Larsen Community Hall in Galena.

Burial will follow in the Old Louden Cemetery with a traditional potlatch to follow at 6:00 p.m. at the Charles Larsen Community Hall.

Pallbearers include: Stan Gurtler, Jr., Michael Jacobs, Peter Captain, Sr., Dick Evans, Paddy Nollner, Willy McCarty III, Roger McCarty Sr. and Gerald McCarty.

Arrangements cared for by the Fairbanks Funeral Home.

Diana Lynn Leach
Anchorage, AK

Diana Lynn Leach, 56, of Anchorage, died Sunday, November 18, 2001 at her home.

She was born December 22, 1945 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Memorial Services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 23, 2001 in the chapel of Anchorage Funeral Home, 1800 Dare Avenue with a reception to follow afterwards.

Diana was a member of the Women of the Moose Club, and officer in the Long Timers and New Comers Club, she was a volunteer at the Alaska Zoo, and a member of Cook Inlet Memorial Society.

Prior to living in Alaska she lived in Loveland, Colorado, where she was a member & elder of Mt. View Presbyterian Church, volunteer of the Girl Scouts and SADD (Students Against Drunk Drivers).

Some of her hobbies include playing bridge, and she really enjoyed water aerobics.

Her family is quoted as saying that she was the pillar of strength for her family, friends, and others in need.

She was a strong, independent, and possessed a heart of gold, as large as they come.

At a time of crisis when the entire world needed a way to help, Diana, went to Costco and bought a variety of food and delivered to the news staff at various news stations in Anchorage, knowing that they might not get a chance to get their own meals that day.

She is proceeded in death by her mother and father; James Leach & Ruth Margaret DeVall.

She is survived by her husband; James Leach of Anchorage, daughter; Amber and husband Scott McKay of Portland, Oregon, brother; Jim Wilson of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Ed Wilson of Fairbanks, Alaska, Richard Shelton of Anchorage and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a Charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by Anchorage Funeral Home.

Linda Lee Williams Osbourne
North Pole

Linda Lee Williams Osbourne, 48, of North Pole, died Monday, November 19, 2001 at Alaska Regional Hospital.

She was born September 9, 1952 in Coronado, California.

She moved to Nome, Alaska in 1977.

She loved animals and anything outdoors.

The family is quoted as saying, “She was a very loving, mother, daughter, sister, aunt.

She was a very out spoken woman, you always know where you stood with her.

She always had time to listen to others, and was always willing to do anything for anyone."

She will be greatly missed by all her family and all who knew her.

She is survived by her son; Jesse R. Williams of North Pole, daughter; Roxanne Williams of North Pole, mother; Helen Alexander of Sun City, Arizona, father; Lou Osbourne of Steilacoom, Washington, brothers; Mike Osbourne of Chula Vista, California, Steve Osbourne of Puyallup, Washington, sisters; Karen Paholsky of Apple Valley, California, Kimberly Wise of Eagar, Arizona, several nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Patches.

Arrangements are by Anchorage Funeral Home.

Velma Louise Sackett
Anchorage, Alaska

Velma Louise Sackett, 82 of Anchorage died Tuesday, November 6, 2001 at Providence Medical Center.

She was born December 4, 1918 in Robinson, Illinois.

She graduated from Robinson High School and later attended South Bend College of Commerce.

She moved to Nome, Alaska in 1962 and also lived in Anchorage.

Velma worked for Maynard McDougall Memorial Hospital in Nome from 1962 – 1965 and for Boeing SST Division in Seattle from 1965 – 1973, and also attended Seattle Community College 1973 – 1977.

She then worked for the U S Geological Survey from 1977 – 1982 and retired 1982.

She was a member of the United Brethren, and taught Sunday school at the Methodist Church in Nome.

The family is quoted; “Our mother & grandmother was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

She was the center of the family, giving generously to all of us and wanting nothing in return.”

She is survived by her daughters; Leslie Boehler, Mary Tucker, of Anchorage, son; Richard Sackett of Anchorage, one sister; Elsie Barr of Sarasota, Florida, her grandchildren; Arianne and Hank Herglotz of Eagle River, Alaska, Terre and Tom Kimble of Anchorage, Dennis Tucker of Seattle, Washington and Richard Tucker of Anchorage.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O. Box 515, North Hampton, MA 01061-0515 or the Disabled American Veterans or the Salvation Army.

Timothy Lee Rowlette
Valdez, Alaska

Timothy Lee Rowlette, 46, of Anchorage, died Friday, November 16, 2001 in Valdez, Alaska.

He was born March 6, 1955 in Bemidji, Minnesota.

He graduated from high school, and later attended the Kenai Community College, after moving to Alaska.

He moved to Alaska in 1978, and lived in Anchorage 4 years, Soldotna 18 years, and Valdez for the last 2 years.

He was employed by the Alyeska Pipeline.

He was a member of the Bow Hunting Association, and Ducks Unlimited.

He loved bow hunting, fishing and anything outdoors.

A Celebration of Life will be 2:00 P.M., Friday, November 23, 2001 at the Grace Brethren Church in Soldotna with Rev. Chuck Thornton officiating.

The family is quoted as as saying, “We lost our Tim, and the world lost an incredible man,”

He is preceded in death by his father; Thomas L. Rowlette.

He is survived by his wife; Lynn Rowlette of Valdez, two daughters; DesaRae Shanahan and her husband Brian of Clarksville, Tennessee, Shawna Potter and husband Richard of Valdez, mother; Jean Harvey of Ravilli, Montana, step mother; Cheryl Rowlette of Bemidji, Montana, sisters; Sara Harvey of Seattle, Washington, Laureen Rowlette of Colorado, brother; Michael Rowlette of Castle Rock, Colorado, three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alaska USA Credit Union or Wells Fargo Bank.

RICHARD JOHNSON
Anchorage

RICHARD JOHNSON, 61

Wasilla resident Richard Dean Johnson, 61, died November 18, 2001, at Providence Alaska Medical Center of a massive stroke.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Wasilla, with Rev. Henry Woodall officiating.

A graveside service and interment of ashes will be at Wasilla Aurora Cemetery, followed by an American Legion service at American Legion Post 35, in Wasilla.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dave Webster, Matt Matthews, Wayne Cherry and Lou McManus.

Mr. Johnson was born December 7, 1939, in Seattle, Washington.

He received his GED and served in the USAF from May of 1957 to June of 1977.

He came to Alaska in January of 1973.

From November of 1980 to January of 1984, he was employed as a service manager for Penney & Jensen Mobile Homes, and from 1984 to 1991 he was the manager of American Legion Post 35.

He retired from the USAF in 1977.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Wasilla, a Life Member of American Legion Post 9, a Honorary Life Member of American Legion Post 35, and a member of Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 35.

He had received numerous honorary awards from the American Legion.

Mr. Johnson's hobbies and special interests were cribbage, darts and pool.

He was a wealth of information for veterans in need.

He was a very kind, caring person who was happiest when he had his family gathered around him.

He loved going to his son's and grandson's baseball and hockey games.

He also enjoyed spending time with his American Legion family and friends.

He will be missed by his family and friends.

Survivors are his wife, Ruth Johnson; son, Wayne Johnson and his wife, Lisa; daughter, Kathy Marshall and her husband, Chris; sons, Ryan, Michael and Jacob Johnson; brother, Robert Johnson of Seattle: granddaughter, Jessica Johnson; and grandsons, Christopher, Patrick and Eric.

He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Johnson.

In lieu of sending flowers please make all donations to the family.
