Elsie Sexton Gray Mrs. Elsie Sexton Gray, 91, of Clanton, AL, died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004 in Northport, Alabama. She was born Tuesday, March 16, 1913 in Coosa County, AL, daughter of the late John L. Conway and the late Carrie White Conway. She was a teacher in Chilton County for 43 years. Surviving are daughter, Jan Sexton Fargason of Northport, AL; son, Jim Sexton of Florence, AL; brother, Jerome Conway of Montgomery, AL; two sisters, Velma Traywick of Clanton, AL, Eva Williams of Bessemer, AL; two grandchildren, Mr. Adam Fargason of Tuscaloosa, AL and Mrs. Christy (Allen) Baynes of Auburn, AL. She was preceded in death by her father, Mr. John L. Conway and mother, Mrs. Carrie White Conway. Friends were received at Martin Funeral Home Chapel, Clanton, Alabama. Services were held at Martin Funeral Home Chapel, Clanton, Alabama on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Jason Clouse, Rev. David Bishop and Rev. Paul Gray officiating. Interment followed in the Mulberry Baptist Cemetery, Maplesville, Alabama.

Gray, Floyd Thomas
March 25, 1929 - March 11, 2001
Funeral services for Floyd Thomas Gray, 71 and a resident of Clanton, will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at Martin Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Tony Smitherman and Rev. Cecil O. Sewell officiating. Interment will follow at Martin Memorial cemetery in Clanton. Born on March 25, 1929, he was a store owner and died on March 11, 2001 at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. He is survived by his wife, Willie F. Gray of Clanton; two sons, Jerry Gray and Terry Gray, both of Clanton; a daughter, Debra Darnell of Clanton; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

G. G. Gray, Farmer and Clanton Business Man died 1 mile North East of Clanton Sunday Morning. He also operated School Busses and a Clanton Grist Mill. His burial was at Bethany. He is survived by his Wife and 4 Sons, N. A. Gray, R. Z. Gray of Clanton, W. G. Gray of Verbena Route 1, and W. J. Gray of Burnsville, 4 Daughters, Mrs. Maggie Sumerlin of Selma, Mrs. Alice Sumerlin of Clanton, Miss Cora Gray of Columbus, Ga., two Sisters, Mrs. Louisa Courtney of Selma, and Mrs. Evie Logan of Billingsley Route one. (Please Note: He was a Son of Samuel Gray and his First Wife was Joanna Vinson, daughter of Elijah Ferome and Mary Ann Ray Vinson, his second Wife was Mrs. Nannie Nix Knight.).

James Monroe Gray, age 54, died at his home in the Enterprise Community last Monday. He was sick one day of Heart trouble. Burial at Bethany Cemetery. He was a Brother of G. G. Gray who runs a grist mill in Clanton. Leaves Wife, 5 Sons and 6 Daughters.

Dykes of Verbena, Mrs. Moodie Bone of Verbena, Miss Mary Gray of Montgomery, 3 Brothers, Jessie Anderson of Powderly, Johnnie and Junior Anderson of Pletcher, 2 Sisters, Mrs. Alice Chambers of Clanton, and Mrs. Mary Hombrech of Tuscaloosa, and by 10 Grandchildren.(2riesmeteries of Chilton by Benjamin D. Gray of Clanton, 4 Sisters, Mrs. Henry Sumerlin of Burnsville, Mrs. Will Sumerling of Burnsville, Mrs. Cora Gray of Columbus, Ga., and Mrs. Sam Cobern of Birmingham.

Gray, Russell Dalton
February 13, 1913 - March 28, 1999
Funeral services will be held for Russell Dalton Gray, 86, of Verbena, at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church on Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at 3 p.m. with Rev. John Johnston, Rev. Sid Gray, Rev. Paul Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow at Bethany Baptist cemetery in Verbena, with Martin Funeral Home directing. Gray was born on Feb. 13, 1913, in Chilton County, the son of the late George and Susie Gregg [sic]. He was a farmer and was retired from the Chilton County Courthouse as maintenance supervisor after 23 years of service. He died on March 28, 1999, at his residence. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dorothy D. Gray, Verbena; one daughter, Mrs. L. Helen Mims, Clanton; on son-in-law, Doug Mims, Clanton; and one granddaughter.

Green, Lillian Lorene
1915 - January 16, 2005
Lillian Lorene Green, 90, of Maplesville, died Sunday, January 16 at her residence. Services are today at Vermont Holiness Church at 3 p.m. with Rev. Joey Green, Rev. Vernon Shirvers, and Rev. John Renfroe officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Survivors include three daughters, Helen G. Carter of Maplesville, Evelyn Ray of Maplesville and Hazel Butler of Anchorage, AK; five sons, Herbert Green, Bobby Green, Goodlowe Green, Ted Green and Jerry Green, all of Maplesville; 43 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two brothers, J.W. Burt of Stanton and Felix Burt of Stanton; three sisters, Ruth Gandy of Clanton, Carolyn Jones of Lipscomb and Agnes Adams of Prattville.

Eiland of Montgomery, Mrs. Tom Lowe of Birmingham, Mrs. M.D. Foshee of Clanton and Mrs. R. L. Foshee of Clanton.

Funeral services for Judy Lee Green, 55, will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Chapel #2 in Maplesville, with Rev. Scott Tuell, Rev. James DeLoach and Rev. Dearl Lett officiating. Interment will follow at University Highway Church of God in Maplesville. Green was born on May 20, 1945 in Denver, Colo., the daughter of Augusta Marie Dickson Martin and the late William Fletcher Dickson. A resident of Plantersville, she was raised in Denver, Colo. She was a paramedic and died on June 11, 2000 at Shelby Medical Center in Alabaster. She is survived by her husband, Millard E. Green of Plantersville; two sons, Millard E. (Gail) Green Jr. of White City, Ala. and Michael E. Green of Maplesville; a daughter, Michele G. (Bo) Maddox of Maplesville; her mother, Augusta Marie Martin of Clanton; a sister, Doris (Glenn) Arthur of Conway, S.C.; three brothers, James (Nancy) Martin of Vacaville, Calif., Ed (Lee) Anderson of Arvada, Colo. and Don (Chris) Anderson of Sarasota, Fla.; two granddaughters, April Cobern and Haylee Howell; and three grandsons, Travis Green, Justin Howell and Cody Howell.

Funeral services for Elvie Ophelia Griffin, 78, Verbena, were held on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Martin Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Paul Armstrong, Rev. S.P. Gray, and Rev. Paul Gray officiating. Burial followed at Bethany Baptist cemetery in Verbena, with Martin Funeral Home Chapel officiating. Griffin was born on May 11, 1921, the daughter of the late John William and Effie DeVaughn. She was a homemaker. She died at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham on Jan. 30, 2000. Survivors include her husband, Turner E. Griffin, Verbena; one daughter, Barbara Miller, Verbena; three sons, Earl Griffin, Maplesville, Paul Griffin, Verbena, and Dwight Griffin, Indian Springs; two sisters, Lillian Burkhalter, Verbena, and Jenelle Mims, Prattville; one brother, Orbie DeVaughn, Prattville; and one grandson.

Services for John Durwood Griffin, 78 of Clanton, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003 at Martin Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Red Donovan officiating. Burial will follow in Martin Memorial cemetery in Clanton. Visitation will be held today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home. Born on Dec. 16, 1924 to John Henderson Griffin and Fannie Mae Griffin, he died July 22, 2003 at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster. Survivors include his sons Jimmy D. Griffin of Clanton and Dale Griffin of Clanton; brothers Billy Griffin of Demopolis, Don Griffin of Immokalee, Fla., and Bobby Griffin of Huntsville, Texas; sister Louise Langston of Clanton; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

Memorial services for Shirley Griffin, 62, of Dothan, will be held June 5 at 2 p.m. at the Clanton Church of God. Reverend Billy Boatwight will officiate. Mrs. Griffin, a former resident of Chilton County, died May 14. Survivors include her sons, Wayne Griffin of Thorsby and James "Tony" Griffin of Wetumpka; daughter, Lisa Parrish of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Griffin, Thomas Jefferson 'Jeff'

Thomas Jefferson Griffin, age 86, died at the home of his Son, J. R. Griffin of Eastview on March 21. The burial was at Verbena, funeral by Rev. G. G. Williams. He is survived by his aged wife, 5 Sons, John of Texas, N. J. of Atlanta, T. C. of Spigener, J. R. (Bob) and Green of Clanton Route, he was born and reared in Clay County where he married Miss Lou Dempsey Parsons 65 years ago.

Gross, Irma Johnson

Funeral services for Irma Johnson Gross, 90, Clanton, will be held at First Baptist Church of Cottonwood in Houston County on Saturday, July 24, 1999, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Doug Powell officiating. Burial will follow at the Cottonwood cemetery in Cottonwood, with Martin Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be held at Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Clanton on Friday, July 23, 1999, from 5-8 p.m. Gross was born on May 9, 1909, in Houston County, the daughter of the late Eldred and Leila Johnson. She was a retired teacher, having taught elementary school for 36 years. Most of her career was spent at Cottonwood School in Houston County. She died on July 20, 1999, at Sunrise Nursing Home in Elmore. Survivors include one son, Larry E. Gross, Federal Way, Wash.; one daughter, Judy G. Powell, Clanton; one sister, Edna Perry, Columbus, Ga.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. J. Gross.

Gulledge, D.A.
1884 - January 1919
D.A. Gulledge, age 37, Son of Judge J. W. E. Gulledge died in Clanton last week of Influenza and Pneumonia, burial was in Union Springs, Ala., his Sister, Mrs. J. F. Stroud lives at Union Springs, Ala.

Gulledge, James Wesley Ellis 'Eli', Gen.
September 18, 1846 - March 20, 1936
General J. W. E. Gulledge died last Friday at age 89, burial was in Verbena Cemetery. He is survived by 2 Sons and 1 Daughter. He was born in Coosa County 9-18-1846. He volunteered for Service in the Confederate Army in 1862. He lost a leg in the Battle of Drury's Run near Richmond, Va. He came to Chilton County in 1885 and taught school many years. He was a member of Clanton Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Hastings C. Haigler, 80, Prattville, were held Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Martin Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Carl Ponder officiating. Burial followed at Maplesville Cemetery, with Martin Funeral Home directing. Haigler was born on June 28, 1919, in Chilton County, the son of William E. and Della Haigler. He was a packer. He died on Sept. 25, 1999, at Baptist Nursing Home Prattville. Survivors include Jewel Haigler, Prattville; three daughters, Karen Tucker, Autaugaville, Beverly Blankenship, Oakland, Calif., and Sarah Henderson, Montgomery; two sons, Marvin Matthews, Prattville, and Ronald Matthews, Ft. Collins, Colo.; two nephews; one cousin; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Born on April 1, 1918 to Grady Haigler and Alberta Haigler, he died June 12, 2003 at Warren Manor Nursing Home in Selma. Survivors include his wife, Willodean Haigler of Maplesville; daughters Sue Callaway of Gulf Shores, Carol Haigler of Maplesville, Faye Hightower of Maplesville and Linda Smitherman of Maplesville; sons Marshall Haigler of Maplesville, Walter Haigler of Maplesville, Steve Haigler of Foley, Carl Haigler of Childersburg and David Haigler of Maplesville; 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
