Kenneth Cunningham

Kenneth Wilson Cunningham, a native of Tennessee and a resident of Daphne, died Sunday at an area nursing facility. He was 76.
Cunningham, a former Atmore resident, worked in the insurance business. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Lucy Lee Waters Cunningham of Daphne; two sons, Guy E. Cunningham of Des Moines, Iowa, and Glen A. Cunningham of Spanish Fort; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. memorial service at Daphne United Methodist Church. Visitation also will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore. A graveside service is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Clear Springs United Methodist Church in Gateswood.
Memorials may be made to the University of South Alabama Cancer Research Center, 307 University Blvd., Mobile, AL 36688.

James Mitchell Sr.

James Carl Mitchell Sr., who worked as a chainsaw operator at Scott Paper Co., died Friday at his home. He was 79.
Mitchell was a native of Monroeville and a resident of Atmore.
Survivors include his wife, Rosie Findley Mitchell of Atmore; 10 children, Barbara Mitchell, Mary Alice Jewel Mitchell, Annie Dailey, Linda Faye Crook, Deborah Mitchell, James Carl Mitchell Jr., Lloyd Mitchell, Ben Mitchell and David Mitchell, all of Atmore, and Robert Mitchell of Brewton; three brothers, Homer Mitchell of Atmore, Andrew J. Mitchell of Jackson and Melvin Mitchell of Pensacola; 32 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at Turner Funeral Chapel in Atmore. The service is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Power Pentecostal Holiness Church in Atmore. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Atmore.

William Grissett

William Carl Grissett, a retired heavy equipment operator in the construction business, died Monday at his home. He was 78.
Grissett, a native of Foley, was a longtime resident of Mobile and current resident of Dothan.
Survivors include his wife, Natalie Hinton Grissett of Cowarts, Ala.; one sister, Frances Wiggins of Wilmer; and one brother, Harold Grissett of Mobile.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the noon funeral in the chapel at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street. Burial will be in Joyner Cemetery in the Tanner Williams community.
Memorials may be made in his name to the Dothan Church of God, 601 Hedstrom Drive, Dothan, AL 36301.

Henry J. Bates

Henry J. Bates, a former employee of Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co., now known as Atlantic Marine, died Sunday at an area hospital. He was 86.
Bates, a native of Excel, Ala., was a resident of the Tanner Williams community.
He had worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps, during which time he worked on several projects in Mobile and Baldwin counties, according to relatives.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ruth Bolen Bates of Tanner Williams; five sons, Kenneth Bates, Duane Bates, Stephen Bates and Kevin Bates, all of Mobile, and Nicholas Bates of Centerville, Utah; four daughters, Bonnie Schell of Summerdale, Nancy Nowell of Crossville, Tenn., Karen Dunn of Wilmer and Denise Montgomery of Saraland; one brother, Fred Bates of Fultondale, Ala.; 22 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be today from 10 a.m. until the noon funeral at Tanner Williams United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Palestine Cemetery in Wilmer. Arrangements are by Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of the South, P.O. Box 9693, Mobile, AL 36691.

Ellazora Brooks

Ellazora Oneal Donaldson Brooks, a homemaker, died Sunday at her daughter's home in Eight Mile. She was 91.
Brooks, a native of Frankville, Ala., was a longtime resident of Prichard and a founding member of the Prichard Civic Club. The club's founding members were instrumental in convincing Prichard's elected officials in the 1950s to purchase land to establish the Hogan Street park and library for African-American residents. They also raised funds to furnish the library and purchase playground equipment, according to relatives.
She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Prichard, where she had been active until her health failed.
She was a charter member of the Jordan Pride Chapter No. 775 Order of the Eastern Star, the Modernette Federated Club and the Prichard City Federation of Women's and Youth Clubs.
Survivors include three sons, Floyd E. Brooks of Sacramento, Calif., Carroll Brooks of Prichard and Owen Brooks of North Fork, Calif.; two daughters, Dr. Beatrice Morse and Ellazora Sewell, both of Eight Mile; one brother, Daniel Donaldson of Pittsburgh; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home on North Hamilton Street in Mobile. Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. funeral at Macedonia Baptist Church in Prichard. Burial will be in Mount Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Frankville.

Beatrice Goins

Beatrice Goins, a native of Montgomery and a longtime resident of Mobile, died Aug. 27 at a local hospital. She was 48.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Goins of Mobile; two sisters, Vera Watson of Theodore and Eloise McArthur of Atoka, Okla.; and two brothers, James McArthur of Marbury, Ala., and David McArthur of Sarasota, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Marbury. Arrangements are by Pine Crest Funerals and Cremations in Mobile.

Wilda Johnson
Wednesday, September 07, 2005
Wilda Black Johnson, a longtime nurse, died Tuesday at a local hospital. She was 67.
Johnson, a native of Mobile and resident of Chickasaw, had worked at Springhill Memorial Hospital, now the Springhill Medical Center.
Survivors include a son, Aubrey Johnson of Birmingham; a daughter, Kimberly Wilkins of Mobile; three sisters, Linda Gaston and Patsy Arras, both of Mobile, and Peggy Watson of Kennesaw, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street, where the service is set for 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be Mobile Memorial Gardens.

Cecil Jones

Cecil Raymond Jones, who worked offshore for an oil company, died Saturday at an area hospital. He was 61.
Jones, a native of Paint Rock, Ala., was a resident of Eight Mile.
Survivors include two brothers, Jesse M. Jones and John D. Jones; and one sister, Linda J. Taylor, all of Eight Mile.
A memorial service is set for 3 p.m. today at Valhalla Memorial Funeral Home in Semmes. A private burial is planned.
