Edith Orso Coker

Edith Orso Coker, 79, died Sept. 6, 2007 at the Jackson Medical Center. She was a native of St. Stephens. A member of the Calvert Baptist Church, Coker had retired as a cafeteria worker in the Washington County Public Schools.

She was survived by her husband, William Earl Coker of St. Stephens; son, Henry Hovell of Citronelle; four daughters, Marie Gunter of Davidson, N.C., Betty Perry of Chunchula, Jo Ann Hovell and Nancy Fuller, both of Calvert; three brothers, Eddie Leo Perkins of Axis, Leroy Perkins of St. Stephens and Donald Lee Perkins of Lucedale, Miss.; five sisters, Elsie Hovell of Satsuma, Dorothy Willingham of Saraland, Marie Hovell and Daisy Sticher, both of Calvert and Eleanor Williamson of Loxley; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

The Revs. Clay Lewis and Earl Watson officiated the funeral service Sept. 8 at the Calvert Baptist Church with Freeman Funeral Service, Inc. directing.

Arthur Earl Hayes Sr.

Arthur Earl Hayes Sr., 69, a native of Centreville and a longtime resident of Douglasville, Ga., died Sept. 5, 2007 at a Douglasville hospital. He was a retired electrician, having worked at Blue Circle Cement (now LaFarge Co.) for 41 years. His church membership was at Central Baptist Church in Douglasville. He was a Shriner and a Mason. Survivors include his wife, LaJuana Hayes of Douglasville; daughter, Phyllis H. Timms of Austell, Ga.; son, Arthur Earl Hayes Jr. of Canton, Ga.; three sisters, Linda H. Breedlove of Jackson, Jean H. Leach of Jemison and Cheryl H. Tatum of Powder Springs, Ga.; two brothers, Leslie Hayes of Buchannan, Ga. and William Thomas Hayes of Tuscaloosa; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Baethke of Trussville and Mary Shoemaker of Douglasville; one stepson, James E. Williams of Columbus, Ga.; two grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral was Sept. 8 at Central Baptist Church with the Revs. Garry Eudy and Charles Gibbs officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Bernard Moore Harrell

Bernard Moore Harrell, died Sept. 12, 2007 at a local hospital at the age of 98. He was a native of Zimco and a resident of Jackson where he was a charter member of Forest Avenue Baptist Church. He was a retired mechanic with Olin Chemical Corporation in McIntosh, a member of the Santa Fe Lodge No. 226 and a Navy veteran of WWII.

Survivors include three sons, James Harrell of Jackson, Charles Harrell of Mobile and Ray Harrell of Grove Hill; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Sept. 16 at Forest Avenue Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Rushing and Billy Hall officiating. Interment included a Masonic graveside service at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson. Arrangements were directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.

Burnie Howard

Burnie Howard, 78, a native and resident of Tibbie, died Sept. 13, 2007 at his residence. He was a retired and self-employed commercial beekeeper.

He is survived by his wife, Stella Howard of Tibbie; a son, Coy (Rebecca) Howard of Tibbie; four daughters, Geneva Bamford and Lanie Parnell, both of Tibbie, Burnette Parnell of Laton Hill and Tammy Brents of Wagarville; three brothers, Simon Howard, Travis Howard and Theodore Howard, all of Tibbie; five sisters, Voncile Jeffers of Columbia, S.C., Dyscie Odom of Deer Park, Osceola Henderson of Chatom, Shirley Clark of Hawthorn and Ida Geranis of Bay Minette; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Sept. 15 at Fairhope Baptist Church in Tibbie with the Revs. Ernest Tucker and Al Brown officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directing. Active pallbearers were Craig Howard, Jamie Howard, Derek Everette, Paul McIlwain, Shane Howard, Clayton Howard, Stewart Howard and Paul LaBlanc.

Annie Gertrude Purvis

Annie Gertrude Baxter Purvis, died at the age of 89 at a Mobile hospital, Sept. 15, 2007. A native and resident of Chatom, she was a self-employed seamstress in her home and a member of Fairhope Baptist Church in Tibbie. She was predeceased by Frank M. Beech, William Ed Beech and Shirley Ann Beech, two sons and a daughter respectively.

She is survived by seven sons, James O. (Jennie) Beech, Grady (Lou) Beech, Gerald (Lanelle) Beech and Charles "Chuck" Purvis, all of Chatom, Wayne (Emma) Beech of Mobile, Arthur Beech of Hobson and Jimmy (Linda) Beech of Hillsboro, Texas; three daughters, Edith Bell Beech of Chatom, Janie (Jack) Caldwell of Mobile and Marsha (Harold) Givens of Seminole; a brother, Charlie Baxter of Tibbie; sister, Thelma Parnell of Tibbie; 42 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Sept. 18 at the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom with the Rev. Bobby Smith officiating. Interment was in the Fairhope Baptist Church Cemetery in Tibbie.

Phyllis Merle Sibley

Phyllis Merle Allison Sibley, a Jackson resident, died Sept. 18, 2007 at the age of 66. She was the daughter of Era and Merrell Allison of Perryville, Ark. and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

In her life, she worked for Dalton Oil in Gary, Ind., Perry County Bank, Allison Ford of Morrilton, Ark., Balch Oldsmobile of Little Rock, Perry County Sheriff's Department - Deputy Sheriff/tax collector, First Baptist Church of Perryville secretary, treasurer, pianist and organist and Boise Cascade in Jackson. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson where she sang in the adult choir and helped with the children's choir, the Jackson HealthActions Red Hat Waterbugs and the Jackson Garden Club. A woman who loved the Lord, her family, life and people, Mrs. Sibley always had a smile on her face.

She was preceded in death by her father, Merrell Leroy Allison. She is survived by her husband, Alfred Sibley of Jackson; two daughters, Vicky Sibley (Gene) Smith of Lewisville, Ark. and Debra Diane Sibley (Bryant) Randall of Jackson; son, Mark Sibley of Perryville; six grandchildren, Stephen Michael Dyar, Stephanie Michelle Dyar, Tyler Sibley, Dustin Sibley, Garrett Sibley and Kaylee Sibley; one step-granddaughter, Chelsea Randall; mother, Era Allison; two brothers, Carroll (Kathy) Allison and Michael (Patty) Allison; sister, Patricia (Junior) Holland; brother-in-law, Billy (Jackie) Sibley; and several nieces, nephews, an aunt, cousins and close friends who will miss her very much.

A memorial service will be at First Baptist Church of Jackson today (Thursday), Sept. 20 from 6-6:30 p.m. and visitation from 6:30-8. She will be transported to her hometown of Perryville where a funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 22 at the First Baptist Church of Perryville at 10 a.m. followed by a graveside service at the Perryville Ragsdale Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Music Ministry, 214 College Ave., Jackson, AL 36545.

Services provided by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson and burial by Harris Funeral Home of Perryville.

Glen Edward Vann

Glen Edward Vann, 57, died Sept. 17, 2007 in Clarke County. He was a native of Dothan and a resident of Grove Hill, working in maintenance at Alabama River Pulp in Monroeville. AVietnam veteran in the U.S. Army, he attended Grove Hill United Methodist Church.

He is survived by a son, Grant Lee Page Jr. of Huntsville; a daughter, Jennifer Vann (Chris) Abston of Jackson; brother, David L. Vann of Webb; and grandchildren, Juliana Abston, Kaylee Abston and John Clayton Abston.

Visitation is today (Thursday), Sept. 20, 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11, at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. The Rev. Dave Rhodes is officiating. Interment will be in the Gardens of Memory in Dothan at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to "Almost Home" (Child Advocacy Center), P.O. Box 841, Grove Hill, AL 36451.

Leeora Koen Freelong

Leeora Koen Freelong, a homemaker, died at the age of 89, Sept. 14, 2007, at Jackson Medical Center. She was a native and lifetime resident of Millry.

Survivors include five daughters, Leaster Dumas, Virginia (Clyde) McIlwain, Mary Lynn (Sammy Gray) Carpenter and Velma (Hugh) Watkins, all of Millry and Lena (John Robert) Moseley of St. Stephens; three sons, Cleve (Ann) Koen Jr. of Silver Hill and William (Janice) Koen and Oscar (Judy) Koen, both of Millry; three sisters, Cora Sanderson of Chatom, E.C. (Bodie) Carpenter and Dorothy (Gray) Carpenter, both of Millry; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in Millry Sept. 15 with interment in the church cemetery. The Revs. Lamar Chapman and Alvin Tucker officiated with St. Stephens Funeral Home directing.

Harold Gene Moore Sr.

Harold Gene Moore Sr., 83, native of Corpus Christi, Texas and a resident of St. Stephens died Sept. 16, 2007 at his residence. He was a member of the James Chapel Baptist Church of St. Stephens. In Corpus Christi, Moore had been the owner of W& M Barbecue and the past president of the NAACP.

Survivors include his wife Bernice Abston Moore of St. Stephens; four sons, Harold (Donna) Moore Jr. of Duarte, Calif., Efrem (Sherrons) Moore of Bakersville, Calif., Clinton (Barbara) Fikes of McIntosh and Charles (Selena) Burnes of Corpus Christi; two daughters, Pamela Miller of Pasadena, Calif. and Claudette (William) Williams of St. Stephens; sister, Gladys Williams of Corpus Christi; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 22 with viewing from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11 at James Chapel Baptist Church with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson directing. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

James Thomas Simpson Sr.

James Thomas Simpson Sr., died Sept. 14, 2007 at Mobile Infirmary at the age of 81. He was a native of Greenwood, Miss. and a resident of Sunflower. Simpson was a retiree of Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Mich.

He is survived by his wife, Ophelia Brown Simpson of Sunflower; seven daughters, Demitris (Cornelius) Davis, Omeka (Jimmie) Jackson, Donna (Walter) Dalton, all of Sunflower, Hattie Lark of Springhill, Fla., Gloria Blassingille of Houston, Texas, Phyllis (Will) Johnson of Detroit and Debra (Ricky) Davis of Nashville, Tenn.; three sons, John (Della) Simpson Jr. of Sunflower, Jimmie Williams Sr. of Greenwood and Frank (Dorothy) Washington of Detroit; two sisters, Emma Honey and Willie Mae McGhee, both of Chicago, Ill.; brother-in-law, Clint (Aslean) Brown of Sunflower; 35 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Viewing will be 12 noon until the funeral hour at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22 at St. Paul Baptist Church of McIntosh. Interment will follow in the Brown Cemetery of Sunflower with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
