Edward R. Yates

Funeral services for Edward R. Yates, 70, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, John Ramey and Michael Lightfoot officiating, with Burial in East Point Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Yates died Saturday, July 5 in Georgia. He was born Oct. 12, 1932 in Cullman County to Troy C. and Tessie Pike Yates. He was a retired industrial engineer for the U.S. government.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, James Melvin Yates.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria F. Johnson Yates of Huntsville; a son, Douglas E. (fiancee Tamie Estep) Yates of Tennessee; four sisters, Estelle (DeWitt) Pinkard, Lera (Everett) Wyer and Frances (Otto) Willingham, all of Cullman, and Pat Lambert of Michigan; and two grandchildren, Douglas James Yates of Virginia and Casey Jordan Yates of Maryland.

Visitation was Monday.

Hermon Hollaway

Funeral services for Hermon Hollaway, 84, of Cullman were Monday, July 7, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Dr. Ed Hayes officiating, with Burial in Center Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hollaway died Saturday, July 5 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born March 13, 1919 in Randolph County to Willis and Flonie Harmon Hollaway. He was an auto damage appraiser.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Sticher Hollaway; a brother, Herbert "Hub" Hollaway; three sisters, Oma Bailey, Noma Bittinger and Jean Driver, all of Cullman; two nephews; and one niece.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Cullman County.

Pallbearers were Alton Bland, Paul Driver, Danny Taylor, Jimmy Bland, Curtis Driver and Billy Bailey.

Honorary pallbearer was Jim Coley.

Visitation was Sunday.

Irene Gilley Lukasik

Funeral services for Irene Gilley Lukasik, 81, of Sylacauga, formerly of Cullman, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at Holly Pond Chapel, the Rev. Jim Stanford officiating, with Burial in Holly Pond Cemetery.

Holly Pond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lukasik died Sunday, July 6 at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. She was born Jan. 17, 1922 in Alabama. She was a self-employed accountant and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sylacauga. She lived in Birmingham for 60 years and was a member of The Cathedral Church of The Advent.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Len Lukasik; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gilley; a brother, Herman Gilley; and a sister, Connie Tucker.

Survivors include a son, Robert Lukasik of Sylacauga; a daughter-in-law, Joanne Hosey Lukasik of Sylacauga; a brother, Hershel Gilley of Moulton; four sisters, Bealuh Smith and Opal Gorham, both of Cullman, Bessie Carnell of Holly Pond and Ellen Morgan of Muscle Shoals; a sister-in-law, Opal Gilley of Holly Pond; and three grandchildren, Robby Lukasik, Carrie Lukasik and John Lukasik, all of Sylacauga.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Sylacauga.

Clarence 'Shorty' Cochran

Graveside services for Clarence "Shorty" Cochran, 72, of Blountsville will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at South Cemetery.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cochran died Monday, July 7 at the residence of his niece, Vickie Sullivan. He was born in Dekalb County to Clarence Cochran and May Ashley Cochran Ayers. He was a retired steel worker at General Steel and Tank Company in Birmingham.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Blackmon; a brother, Melvin Cochran; and his parents.

Survivors include a brother, Gary Ayers of Blountsville; and two sisters, Shirley Denney of Blountsville and Jo Ann Goens of Arab.

Pallbearers will be Hugh Hardman, Lynn Ayers, Gary Ayers, Shane Campbell, Gilbert Smith and Dwight Cone.

Gloria D. Cozza

Graveside services for Gloria D. Cozza, 70, of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., formerly of Cullman, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2003 at Florida Memorial Park in Rockledge, Fla.

Davis-Seawinds Funeral Home of Melbourne, Fla. is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cozza died Monday, July 7 at her residence. She was born in Cullman on Nov. 5, 1932 and moved to Indian Harbour Beach 32 years ago from Taiwan. Prior to her retirement she was a ticket agent for five years with Continental Airlines in Melbourne. She was a member of the Genealogy Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Santo Cozza in 1983.

Survivors include three sons, Stephen Cozza of Merritt Island, Fla., Santo Cozza of Satellite Beach, Fla. and Matthew Cozza of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Barbara Cozza of Rockledge, Fla. and Patricia Leigh of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother, Frederick Kugler of Cullman; and three granddaughters.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vitas Hospice Foundation at 4450 W. Eau Gallie Blvd., Melbourne, Fla. 32934.

Keith Andra Freeman Sr.

Funeral services for Keith Andra Freeman Sr., 86, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, with Burial in Cullman Memory Gardens.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Freeman died Sunday, June 29 at McKenzie Hospital in Tennessee. He was born Jan. 8, 1917 in Winston County. He was an electrician and a millwright by trade. He owned a repair shop in Fort Payne from the late 1950s through the 1960s. He worked in the western United States installing missiles during the Cold War, retiring in 1988. He was a skilled outdoorsman and marksman and enjoyed game hunting into his 70s. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, East Cullman Church of Christ and the American Legion. He was a decorated World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1939 to 1946 aboard the USS Hyades and the USS Richmond. He served in Panama, China, Pearl Harbor and occupied Japan. He saw extensive battle service n Okinawa, Saipan, Ulithi, Pelelia, Leyte, Bora Bora, the Phillipines and other islands throughout the South Pacific.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Freeman and Bertha Hale Freeman; his wife, Margaret Pozak Freeman; and his brother, Alden Moran Freeman.

Survivors include his sister, Gladys Freeman Logan; a son, Keith A. Freeman Jr. of Warrior; a daughter, Charlene Freeman (Hans) Schoenenberger of New York; and two granddaughters, Heidi Schoenenberger and Vreni Schoenenberger.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to 21st Century Global Missions, 254 Seville Street, Suite 1, Florence, Ala. 35630 or to the VFW Post 2214, 110 Short St. SW, Cullman, Ala. 35055.

Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Melzie Calvert Gandy

Funeral services for Melzie Calvert Gandy, 86, of Tuscaloosa will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, Owen Calvert officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Calvert died Tuesday, July 8 in Tuscaloosa. She was born in Cullman on Jan. 8, 1917 to Charlie and Ora Hancock Calvert.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include a son, Charles (Connie) Gandy of Pell City; a brother, Garlon Calvert; two grandchildren, Jana Kelli Bishop of Mobile and Cheryl Elaine Gandy of Pell City; and three great-grandchildren, Lilli Bishop, Mitchell Bishop and Olivia Bishop, all of Mobile.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Margie Henry

Funeral services for Margie Henry, 80, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2003 at Daystar, the Rev. Jerry Lawson officiating, with Burial in Bowman Chapel Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Henry died Tuesday, July 8 in Hanceville. She was born in New Albany, Miss., on May 19, 1923 to Carl and Mae Rhodes Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy Haverty of Cullman; son, Jerry Henry of Grossepointe Farms, Mich.; brother, George Johsnon of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Jerry W. Henry, Joshua Henry and Nicole Haverty Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Colette Henry and James Henry.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Donald Allen Calloway

Funeral services for Donald Allen Calloway, 2, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2003 at Peck Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Roland Westmoreland officiating, with Burial in Center Cemetery in Lawrence County.

Peck Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He died Tuesday, July 8 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 25, 2001 in Cullman County to James David and Angela Lorine Carter Calloway.

Survivors include his parents; two brothers, James David Calloway III and Daniel Lee Calloway; a sister, Angel Lorine Calloway, all of Cullman; and his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Johnson of Vinemont.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Dr. Ray Alvin Ashwander

Funeral services for Dr. Ray Alvin Ashwander, 84, of Decatur will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2003 at First United Methodist Church, the Revs. Doug Wells and Asa Boozer officiating, with graveside services at Decatur City Cemetery.

Roselawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Ashwander died Tuesday, July 8 at Decatur General Hospital. He was born July 10, 1918 in Hanceville to Edward and Louise Ashwander. He retired after practicing veterinary medicine for more than 50 years. He served as president of the American Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and president of the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association. He served as secretary-treasurerand later as executive director of the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Examiners. He also served as secretary-treasuer of the North Alabama Veterinary Medical Association and as a member of the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine Advisory Council. He was past president of the Decatur Lions Club, served on the Executive Committee of the Auburn Alumni Association and as past president of the Decatur High School Booster Club. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Anderson Ashwander; two daughters, Amanda Ashwander Dolly and Melinda Talbot Ashwander, both of Decatur; three sons, Charles Walton Ashwander, Ray Alvin Ashwander Jr., both of Decatur, and Walton Anderson Ashwander of Hartselle; seven grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn, Ala. 36830 or First United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Claude Craig Dolly Jr., William Kirtland Dolly, Clint Cummins Dolly, Charles Walton Ashwander Jr., William Samuel Ashwander, Walton Anderson Ashwander Jr. and Samuel Reese Ashwander.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the services.

Robert Jerold Hill

Funeral services for Robert Jerold Hill, 68, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2003 at Simcoe Methodist Church, the Rev. Tony Thomas officiating, with Burial in the adjoining cemetery. The body will lie in state two hours prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hill died Wednesday, July 9 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born in Cullman County on Jan. 22, 1935 to Columbus Lee and Willie Clara Pruett Hill. He was self employed as a commercial fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Tom Hill, Cornise Hill and Theral Hill.

Survivors include his wife, Vera Filmore Hill of Cullman; two sons, Joel Hill and Sherell Hill, both of Cullman; daughter, Wanda (David) Anderson of Cullman; two brothers, Verbon Hill, Billy Hill; two sisters, Helen Wells, Wynette Jones, 10 grandchildren, Kevin, Felicia, Bradley, Shawn, Tiffiny, Misty, Zachary, Isaiah, Daven, Samuel; and four great-grandchildren, Quinton, Austin, Destiny, Christian.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ricky D. Phillips

Ricky D. Phillips, 38, of Holly Pond, died Thursday, July 10, 2003 at University Hospital in Birmingham.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Williams-McCracken Funeral Home.

Margie Henry
