CLIFFORD HAYDEN PEACOCK

Retired soil conservation technician

Clifford Hayden Peacock, 73, of Pell City died Oct. 27, 2002, at his home. He was born Oct. 7, 1929, in Chapman and had retired as a soil conservation technician.

He is survived by his wife, Sara Nell Peacock; a stepdaughter, Carol (Tom) Hoyt of Birmingham; a sister, Vivian Hodge of Fairhope; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service was Oct. 29 at Bolton Brown Service Chapel, the Rev. Charles Moore presiding. Burial followed in Pinelawn Gardens, Bolton Brown Service Funeral Home directing.

GEORGE EDWIN THOMAS

Railroad clerk

George Edwin Thomas, 63, of Clanton died Oct. 21, 2002, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster. He was employed as a railroad clerk.

He is survived by one son, Steven R. Thomas of Verbena; three daughters, Kathy Stephens of Jacksonville, Fla., Teresa Collins and Anita Basham, both of Meridian, Miss.; and seven grandchildren.

Service was Oct. 23 at Martin Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Tony Smitherman presiding. Burial was in Moncrief Cemetery in Gardendale, Martin Funeral Home directing.

MELISSA DARNELL WHITE

School bus driver

Melissa Darnell White, 49, of Clanton died Oct. 23, 2002. She was born in 1953 in Chilton County. She was employed by the Shelby County Board of Education as a school bus driver.

She is survived by her husband, Farris White; her children, Jeremy (Hollie) McWhorter, Carol Rape, Christopher (Jennie) White and Crystal (David) Isbell; four grandchildren; six sisters; and two brothers.

Service was Oct. 25 at Bolton Brown Service Chapel with burial following in New Hope Cemetery in Chilton County.

SARA M. BAKER

Native of New Brunswick, Canada

Sara M. Baker, 91, of Rock Hill, S.C., died Jan. 2, 2003, at her residence. She was a native of New Brunswick, Canada, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Childersburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward M. Baker.

She is survived by three sons, Harry (Doris) Baker of Rock Hill, S.C., Don (Charlotte) Baker of Alabaster and John (Linda) Baker of Seattle, Wash.; three grandsons, Dan (Joyce) Baker of York, S.C., Eric (Polly) Baker of Rock Hill, S.C., and Reid (Wendy) Baker of Childersburg; two granddaughters, Kim (Scott) Gallups of Spanish Fort and Kathy Baker of Summerville, S.C.; and six great-grandchildren.

Service was Jan. 6 at Curtis and Son Childersburg Chapel, the Revs. John Verciglio and Mike Ratliff presiding. Burial followed in Greenhill Memorial Gardens, Curtis and Son Funeral Home Childersburg Chapel directing.

KATHLEEN ALEXANDER BRIDGES

Lifelong resident of Montevallo

Kathleen Alexander Bridges, 91, of Motnevallo died Dec. 25, 2002, in Falkville, Ala.

She was a lifelong resident of Montevallo and a member of the Spring Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Montevallo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton L. Bridges Sr.

She is survived by one son, Milton L. Bridges Jr. of Montevallo; three daughters, Mavis Stephens of Decatur, Norma Connell of Palmer, Alaska, and Sharon Crownover of Asheville, N.C.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Service was Dec. 28 at the church with burial in the adjoining cemetery, the Revs. Scott Fowler and Chuck Hood presiding and Roselawn Funeral Home in Decatur directing. Pallbearers were Karlton Stephens, Jeremy Stephens, Brian Oakes, Bobby Ingram, Jack Ingram and Jeff Patterson.

MARVIN GREEN BURNETT

Montevallo resident

Marvin Green Burnett, 68, of Montevallo died Jan. 4, 2003, in Birmingham. He was a retired tree surgeon.

He is survived by his son, Allen Wayne Burnett Sr. of Brierfield; one sister, Carrie Lee Parks of Montevallo; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Service was Jan. 6 at Cahaba Valley Baptist Church in Brierfield, Ray Smith and Allen Foster presiding. Burial followed in the Cahaba Valley Cemetery in Brierfield, Rockco's Funeral Home in Montevallo directing. Pallbearers were Donny Spain, Ronald Mitchell, Jerry Parks, Cecil Messer, Milton "Jim" Mathis and Roy Burnett Jr.

MARY ELLEN ESTES

Dedicated to work with seniors

Mary Ellen Estes, 65, died Jan. 6, 2003, after a long battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Sandusky, Ala., in 1937, she moved to Pleasant Grove at age 5 where she attended Cottage Hill Elementary and Fairfield High School and was active in the Harmony Baptist Church, now the First Baptist Church of Pleasant Grove. She married her childhood sweetheart and husband of 48 years, James H. Estes, in 1954, and together, they built the Estes Nursing Home system. The Mary Ellen Estes Senior Community Center stands at the heart of Heardmont Park in north Shelby County as a testimony to her hard work and contributions.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Lois Ratliff; a brother, J.D. Ratliff; and a sister, Jeanette Ratliff Miller.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, Norman (Rebecca) Estes of Northport, David (Kim) Estes of Tuscaloosa and Larry (Dawn) Estes of Birmingham a daughter, Julie Estes (John) Burchfield of Northport; a brother, Douglas (Joyce) Ratliff of Birmingham; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer (Brandon) Estes Agee, Jamie Estes, Andy Estes, Taylor Estes, Jessica Estes, Mandy Estes, Melody Estes, Meagan Estes, Madison Estes, Blake Burchfield and Colby Burchfield; and a host of beloved friends and caregivers.

Service will be today, Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. at The Church at Brook Hills with private burial service at Southern Heritage Cemetery. The family requests memorials be made to UAB-GYN Oncology, Research Fund, 619 South 19th Street, Birmingham, AL 35249.

CHARLES ALFORD GOGGINS

Montevallo resident

Charles Alford Goggins, 64, of Montevallo died Dec. 29, 2002, in Birmingham. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Pea Ridge.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Goggins of Montevallo; two sons, Charles Scott Goggins and Bradley Wade Goggins, both of Montevallo; two daughters-in-law, Kay Goggins and Tina Goggins, both of Montevallo; one sister, Judy Fancher of Montevallo; three brothers, Robert Goggins, Lewis Goggins and Gary Goggins, all of Montevallo; and two grandchildren, Brian Scott Goggins and Mereditt Paige Goggins.

Service was Jan. 1, 2003, at Macedonia Baptist Church, Brother Steve Johnson presiding. Burial followed in Macedonia Cemetery, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

JUSTIN WAYNE GUDGER

Columbiana resident

Justin Wayne Gudger, 49, of Columbiana died Dec. 29, 2002. He was born in August 1953.

He is survived by two daughters, Christina (Brian) Lawrence of Columbiana and Courtney Gudger of Alabaster; three sisters, Sandra Alldredge of Winchester, Tenn., Peggy Anderson of Hubert, N.C., and Kay Israle of Ocilla, Ga.; two grandsons, Elijah and Jakob; and his parents, J.W. and Ruthell Gudger of Columbiana.

Service was Dec. 31 at Bolton Brown Service Chapel, the Rev. Joe Stone presiding and Bolton Brown Service Funeral Home directing.

FLOYD EDWARD MCCORD

Meadow Craft employee

Floyd Edward McCord, 66, of Graysville died Dec. 29, 2002. He was a native of Bibb County and an employee of Meadow Craft.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta McCord; two daughters, Sandra McCord and Doris Reed; his mother, Rosa Lee McCord; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Service was Jan. 4 at Westside Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Dr. Rogers L. White presiding. Burial followed in Montevallo Cemetery, Westside Funeral Home from Calera directing.
