Carleta Peters
Carleta Peters, 78, of Mulberry died Monday, July 5, 2004. She was a retired truck driver with PLP. She was also a member of the American Legion and the Vine Prairie Baptist Church. She was born Nov. 22, 1925, to King and Flora Fisher in Mulberry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude A. Peters; a son, Billy G. Peters; a daughter, Claudia Kay Snelling; a brother, Doug Fisher; and a sister, Oleta Johnson.
She is survived by one daughter, Margaret Lee of Mulberry; three sons, Richard Peters of Rogers, Mike Peters of Mulberry and David Peters of Van Buren; a sister, Mary Johnson of Lavaca; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of special nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be James and Jared Peters, Bill Foster, Mark Alverado, Brian Harris, David McCabe, Zachary Johnston, Jason Parrish, Larry Johnson, Tim Palmer and Keith Alderson.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Shaffer Funeral Home Mulberry Chapel with interment at New cemetery in Mulberry; the Rev. Aaron Medlock officiating. The family will visit with friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Cleva Williams
Cleva Williams, 96, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of Cavanaugh Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace; one son, Aubrey Neal Williams; six brothers; and one sister.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at Wellston cemetery in Wellston, Okla., under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Della Jean Williams of Fort Smith; a sister, Rheudine Carter of Russellville; grandchildren, Pat Grayston of Fort Smith, Betty Sharum of Fort Smith, and Pam and Chris Boyd Sr. of Fort Smith; great-grandchildren and spouses, Chris and Lisa Boyd Jr., Joey Boyd, Kim Grayston, Neal and Tiffany Sharum, and Lindsey Sharum; and a great-great-grandchild, Brodie Boyd.

Harry Gene Kelly
Harry Gene Kelly, 74, of Plano, Texas, died Sunday, July 4, 2004, after a lengthy illness with diabetes.. He was born in Alma on March 13, 1930; preceded in death by his parents, William Dover and Maude Hall Kelly of Alma; and his only brother, John Paul Kelly of Noble, Okla.
Harry graduated valedictorian from Alma High School in 1948. He began his 31-year government career at the age of 19, working in the Little Rock FBI office while attending the University of Arkansas Law School. After admission to the Arkansas Bar in 1953, he began a three-year service in the Army, including two years in counterintelligence while stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. He joined the U.S. Customs Service and completed his government career as director of Customs in Houston and Dallas. He authored the book The Tariff Classification of Automobile Trucks, and successfully caused the collection of the largest ever U.S. Customs penalty for fraud ($25 million) and largest ever revenue recovery in the Customs Courts ($2 billion).
In 1980 he joined Robert Givens to practice customs law for 16 years until retirement in 1996. Harry was a member of the Arkansas Bar Association, the Customs Lawyers Association and the Forest Park No. 747 Free Masons in Little Rock.
Harry is survived by his wife, Evelyn; son, Stephen; and grandson, William Dover.
A memorial service will be held at Ocker Funeral Chapel on Saturday, July 10, at 10 a.m. in Alma.
Francis Joseph O’Boyle
Francis Joseph O’Boyle, 59, of Ozark died Sunday, July 4, 2004. He served 16 years in the U.S. Army, and two tours in Vietnam. He spent another six years with the Florida Army National Guard before retiring. He was born Oct. 12, 1944 to Daniel and Ethel O’Boyle of Philadelphia.
He has six living brothers and sisters, Joyce Delong who lives in Wildwood, N.J., Thomas O’Boyle of Kentucky, and two other brothers and sisters from Philadelphia.
He is also survived by a niece, Sharon Allsopp of Ratcliff; great-nieces, Lisa Via of Ozark, Linda Stephenson of Paris, Sharon Greb of Benton and Mary Stockton of Ozark; nephews, Roy Allsopp III of Ratcliff, and Charles Allsopp of Ratcliff; and eight great-grandnieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 9, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
Brother Henry Fuhrmann, O.S.B.
Brother Henry Fuhrmann, O.S.B., monk of Subiaco Abbey in Subiaco, strengthened with the sacraments and the prayers of his brother monks, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, on his 84th birthday, in the 61st year of his monastic profession.
Brother Henry Fuhrmann, O.S.B., 84, monk of Subiaco Abbey, died peacefully July 6, 2004. He had been confined to the Abbey Health Center the last five years as he declined steadily under the ravages of Parkinson’s disease. Edward Fuhrmann was born July 6, 1920, in Lindsay, Texas, the first of 11 children of Willie N. and Margaret (Orth) Fuhrmann. He attended St. Peter’s School in Lindsay, then farmed and worked in the area until he was 21 years old.
Influenced by a vocation homily by his pastor, this young man felt God’s call to follow in the footsteps of two uncles and two cousins who were monks at Subiaco Abbey. On Jan. 19, 1942, with the prayers and blessing of his parents and pastor, Edward Fuhrmann came to Subiaco Abbey where he professed his monastic vows on Sept. 8, 1943, receiving the religious name of Henry. He was followed a few years later by a younger brother, Linus, who became Father Nicholas.
Brother Henry was assigned to continue his work in the carpenter shop where he had shown great promise during his candidacy and novitiate, working under the tutelage of Subiaco’s veteran craftsman Martin Schriver. During this time he helped Mr. Schriver turn out many enduring and beautiful pieces of woodwork, including the tables and chairs in the monastic dining room, the abbot’s pontifical throne (used until Vatican II), and the cedar tabernacle used each year during the Holy Thursday liturgy.
Brother Henry’s dream came true when he next appointment was to work on the abbey farm, an assignment that he would love and cherish even in his retirement years. He took to heart St. Benedict’s admonition to pray and to work: Brother Henry’s spirit had the gentleness of a lamb; his body, the physical strength of an ox.
During five decades of work on the farm, Brother Henry witnessed many transitions, perhaps the greatest being the close of the dairy and sale of milk cows in the early 1960s. For decades following, he managed the abbey’s beef farming.
Sowing and reaping crops, dealing with adverse weather conditions, fixing broken machinery, and the hundred-and-one other necessities known only to a farmer were part of Brother Henry’s half-century of dedicated agricultural work. His strong faith and generosity endeared him to neighbors and friends.
In 1976 he spent three months at Santa Family Monastery in Belize, Central America, helping with farm and construction work. Other than this short interval away, Brother Henry’s entire monastic life was spent at Subiaco.
His favorite outdoor pleasure was fishing. In his heyday, he along with other fishermonks regularly provided a full Friday fare for the monastic table. He always enjoyed a lively game of “sheephead” or dominoes at evening recreation.
Reminiscing during his golden jubilee year in 1993, Brother Henry said: “I went through the usual smooth and rough until profession in 1943.” And summing up the years spent on the farm, he concluded: “We had a very busy life and we want it so.”
During the years of his declining health and final illness, Brother Henry was faithfully attended by his cousin Brother Louis Fuhrmann, with whom he had shared decades of work on the Abbey farm.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Anna Stoffels; and a brother, William, who died in infancy. He is survived by eight siblings; besides Father Nicholas of the Abbey, there are Joe, Tony and Aloys Fuhrmann of Lindsay, Texas, Ottilia Wachsman of Wichita Falls, Texas, Rose Stoffels, Theresa Huchton and Mickey Haverkamp of Muenster, Texas.
A Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Saint Benedict Church in Subiaco. The liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2004, at Saint Benedict Church in Subiaco. Interment will be at the Abbey cemetery under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
Sister Stella Stephens
Sister Stella Stephens, 88, of Fort Smith passed away Sunday, July 4, 2004, in Fort Smith. She made her religious profession June 24, 1934, at St. Scholastica Monastery. She was a librarian at the Fort Smith Library from 1978 to 1984 and a part-time librarian at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center from 1984 to 1993. She was a teacher, and taught grade school and high school level in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Texas.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Scholastica Monastery Chapel with burial at St. Scholastica cemetery under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a sister, Mildred Pugh of Stigler; and her religious community.
Pallbearers will be the sisters and caregivers at St. Scholastica.

Raymund L. Hammer
Raymund L. Hammer, age 72, of Fort Smith passed away Monday, July 5, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was a member of Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Fort Smith, retired from Planters Peanuts and also retired from the Air Force in which he served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietname War. He was also a member of Fort Smith Singles Group. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Sayers Hammer; two sisters, Catherine McCaulley and Irene Corotto; also four brothers, Lambert Hammer, Joe Hammer, Lawrence Hammer and James Hammer. He was also a member of the Western Arkansas Chapter Retired 
military Association.
Rosary service will be 7 p.m. today at Fentress Memorial Chapel in Fort Smith. Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with burial of ashes at Holy Cross cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Mackey and Patty Conley, both of Greenwood, and Theresa Coffman of Fort Smith; two sons, David Hammer of Yukon, Okla., and Lt. Col. Douglas Hammer of Langley Air Force Base in Norfolk, Va. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Ann Minten of Van Buren and Agnes Borengasser of Fort Smith; two brothers, Albert Hammer of Fort Smith and Robert Hammer of Calimesa, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be James Mackey, Charles Conley, Nathan Mackey, Stephen Hochmuth, Michael Hochmuth and Bob Roberts.

Dorothy Swena
HERMISTON, Ore. — Dorothy Ilene Swena, 71, of Hermiston, Ore., formerly of Fort Smith, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, in Hermiston. She was born July 25, 1932, in Ogallala, Neb. She was a cosmetologist and taught cosmetology in Fort Smith, and operated Sassy Strands Beauty Salon in Hermiston.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hermiston Seventh-day Adventist Church. A private burial was held Monday at Hermiston cemetery under the direction of Burns Mortuary of Hermiston, Ore.
She is survived by five sons, Stanley, Stewart, James, Jerald and Ronald Swena; a sister, Doris Fletcher; a brother, Dean Most; and eight grandchildren.
Joyce Kelly
Joyce Burton Kelly, 80, of Fort Smith died Monday, July 5, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a veteran of the Air Force.
A private graveside service was held Wednesday at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a son, Austin Suits of Hot Springs; three sisters, Vaneeta Brannam of Booneville, Dorothy Burton of Maud, Okla., and Mary Meeks of Waxahachie, Texas; and two brothers, John Burton of Springfield, Ore., and Jesse Burton of Pocassett, Okla.
Morgan Briggs
SAPULPA, Okla. — Morgan Michelle Briggs, infant daughter of Roy and Glenda Briggs of Sapulpa, Okla., died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, in Tulsa.
No services are planned. The body was cremated under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Catherine Briggs of Sapulpa, Okla.; a brother, Caleb Killough of Sapulpa, Okla.; grandparents, Jamie Griffin of Sallisaw, James and Judy Killough of Sapulpa, Okla., George Briggs of Tulsa and Freda Smock of Cookson.

Danny Ray Jones, 37, of Fort Smith died Sunday, July 4, 2004, in Fort Smith.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Curly and Barbara Jones of Lavaca; his mother, Joyce Jones of Van Buren; his birth mother, Ann Courtney; a sister, Barbara Plant of Hartford; a brother, Jamie Jones of Hartford; a stepsister, Patricia Dye; three stepbrothers, Robert Puckett of Paris, Nathan Puckett of Iraq and Billy Puckett of Illinois.

Robert Boggan
Robert D. “Bob” Boggan, 84, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, in a local hospital. He was a retired salesman from Shipley Baking Co., a member of Phoenix Village Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and sang in the choir, an Army veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific and Europe, a Master Mason, Masonic Lodge No. 430 of Muskogee, Okla., and a member of the Teamsters Local No. 373.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; two daughters, Bobbie Hall of Little Rock and Nancy Eatmon of Fort Smith; four sisters, Rebecca Montgomery and Gloria Boggan, both of Hickory, Miss., Virginia Chancellor of Crystal River, Fla., and Eva Oram of Belfountain, Ontario, Canada; a brother, Douglas Boggan of Kosciscko, Miss.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Raymond Cornell
ALMA — Raymond Cornell, 70, of Alma died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, in a local hospital. He was born Nov. 3, 1933, in Dundee, N.Y. He was a retired staff sergeant for the Army after 21 years of service, was awarded two Bronze Stars, one with V for valor; he was a retired employee of Whirlpool after 23 years of service, a Mason member of Sebastian Lodge No. 706, and of the Baptist faith.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial and full military honors at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Billie; two daughters, Linda Montgomery of Rudy and Charlotte Parsons of Alma; a son, Frederick Cornell of Hilton, N.Y.; a brother, Fred Cornell of Hamlin, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be military.

She is survived by two daughters, Sue Thornsberry of Russellville and Kay Ryan of Magazine; a son, Don Starling of Magazine; a sister, Addie Starling of Magazine; two brothers, Sinclair and J.L. Haller, both of Magazine; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
