Alfred Jennings “Tom” Gamble
Alfred Jennings “Tom” Gamble went to his Lord and Savior on Friday, June 18, 2004. He was born June 26, 1916, in Jenny Lind to Harvey and Signora (Johnson) Gamble.
Tom grew up in Jenny Lind, where at the age of 10 he went to work in the coal mines as a pony boy. In 1937, he moved to Washington to work in the coal mines of Bellingham. In 1949, he was asked to go commercial fishing with his friend Hank Brandt. Tom found that he loved the sea, and never returned to the mines. Tom fished for everything from tuna to salmon, from the Bering Sea in Alaska to Guadaloupe Island off the coast of Mexico. Later he worked on the oil tankers and then as a mate for Foss Tug & Barge on its ocean-going towboats. In March 1968, an injury ended his working career, but not his enjoyment of life. He often said, “When you wake up, get up, and when you get up, do something.”
Tom was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bellingham 2nd Ward. He was a great joy to all who knew him. After services, the children would run back to the last pew because they knew that Tom would be waiting with candy for them all.

Tom is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 40 years, Thurza; his parents; brothers, Eugene Gamble, Harold Gamble; and sister, Louise Price.
Tom is survived by his children, Tom E. Gamble of Arkansas, Margarette Elsbree of Bellingham, Tomia Prucher of Arlington, Wash., Roxie Pelton of Bellingham, Mason “Skip” Gamble of Ferndale, Wash., Lance Gamble of Texas; stepchildren, Susan Pickett of Oregon, Mark Gaskill of Bellingham, Janice Womack of Oregon and Grant Gaskill of Ferndale; numerous precious grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Ferndale, Wash., with burial at Greenacres Moles cemetery in Ferndale.
John B. Anderson
John B. Anderson, 75, of Van Buren died Thursday, July 15, 2004, in a local hospital. He was an Army veteran of the 
Korean War, a member of Rena Road Baptist Church and retired from Sears.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Peveyhouse cemetery in Van Buren.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Anderson of the home; a daughter, Penny King of Warrensburg, Mo.; three sons, John E. Anderson of Lenexa, Kan., David L. Anderson of Belton, Mo., and Arthur F. Anderson of Van Buren; four sisters, Rita Staab and Mavis Bess, both of Sallisaw, Betty Nix of Jenks, Okla., and Maxine Hines of Pensacola, Fla.; a brother, Mac Anderson of Alma; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, 700 Jefferson St., Van Buren.

Chau Yen Nhu
Chau Yen Nhu, 92, of Vietnam died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, in Tra Vinh Vietnam. She was born Sept. 4, 1912, in Hong Kong. She was a member of Temple Phuoc Minh Tu in Vietnam.
Funeral will be 8 a.m. Thursday at Temple Tra Vinh in Vietnam.
She is survived by three daughters, Van and Kim Tu, both of Vietnam, and Tuyet Tu of Fort Smith; two sons, Hung Tu of Boston and Tu of Vietnam; a son-in-law, Muoi Nguyen of Fort Smith; 15 grandchildren in Vietnam and 10 grandchildren in Fort Smith, Phuong, An, Ninh, Thuy, Binh, Diem, Linh and Lam Nguyen and Chung and Hoa Tu; and 40 great-grandchildren.

Frances Been O’Shea
Frances Been O’Shea, 89, of Fort Smith died Friday, July 16, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Joseph O’Shea.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Holy Cross cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by two daughters, Ellen Marie Scaringe of Burbank, Calif., and Ruby Kimmons of Tulsa; a son, Pat O’Shea of Yakima, Wash.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bill, Matt and Larry Scaringe, Joseph Rushlow, Joe Kimmons and David Treat.

Jerry Nathan Rice
Jerry Nathan Rice, 66, of Spring, Texas, passed away on June 17, 2004. He attended elementary through high school in Fort Smith and graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in journalism. He is preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Dorothy Brown Rice, and brother, Ronald Rice. Jerry served in the Army during the
Korean War, was a member of Walter M. Pierson Masonic Lodge No. 1339 and retired after 30 years with the Drug Enforcement Administration. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Tomball, Texas.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters Denise Tambi and Shawn; son Dickmond; 10 grandchildren; and brother Gary Rice of Laporte, Texas.
Funeral service was held Saturday at the Episcopal Church with burial at Klein Memorial Park in Tomball under the direction of Klein Funeral Home of Tomball.
Jackie Marvis Shell
Jackie Marvis Shell, 74, of Fort Smith died Saturday, July 17, 2004, in a local hospital. He was a retired carpenter, a resident of Fort Smith and of the Christian faith.
The body will be cremated and no services are scheduled.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Marie Shell of the home; three daughters, Vera Medina of Fayetteville, Patricia Ashworth of West Fork and Karen Harrell of Fort Smith; three sons, Robert Shell of Shreveport, La., Rollin Wood of Barling and William Wycough of Fayetteville; a sister, Gladys Tack of California; a brother, Raymond G. Shell of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

George Manckiy, 72, of Greenwood passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2004, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was employed with J.R. Handycan in Greenwood, was a machinist and was of the Christian faith.
Funeral service will be 9 a.m. Monday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at the U.S National cemetery in Fort Smith.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mamie Falls
MENA — Mamie Mae Falls, 90, of Mena died Friday, July 16, 2004, in a Mena nursing home. She was born Nov. 22, 1913, in Hartley. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church and a homemaker, and worked for Renova Shirt Factory for a number of years. She was the widow of Landis Falls.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Lakeview Baptist Church with burial at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Cove under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by three sons, Duane Falls of Texarkana, Raymond Falls of Mena and Jerry Falls of Howe, Texas; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Russell “Larry” Burger, 66, of Fort Smith died Thursday, July 15, 2004, in Fort Smith. He drove the train at Creekmore Park and was a dental technician for Hatfield and Dixon Co., a member of Belle Point Lodge No. 20, Scottish Rite, Grotto, and a Civil War historian.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fentress Mortuary Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Forest Park cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Mae; a son, Russell Burger of Fort Smith; a sister, Anna Carr of Muldrow; a brother, Gary Burger of Orlando, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

LITTLE ROCK — Raymond D. Patton, 83, of Little Rock, formerly of Clarksville, died Saturday, July 17, 2004, in a Little Rock hospital. He was born Dec. 14, 1920, in Hunt. He was a member of East Mount Zion Baptist Church, a retired farmer and carpenter, and the widower of Margaret Patton.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville with burial at Stillwell cemetery in Clarksville.
He is survived by three sons, Dennis Patton of Little Rock, Kenneth Patton of Clarksville and Terry Patton of London; a sister, Mary Rusher of Lamar; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

PARIS — Ernest Rudolph Hatwig Sr., 82, of Paris died Thursday, July 15, 2004, in Paris. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, an Army veteran of World War II and a retired general laborer in the rock quarry industry. He was the widower of Caroline Hatwig.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. today at Roller Funeral Home Chapel in Paris. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paris with burial at St. Benedict cemetery in Subiaco.
He is survived by a son, Ernest Hatwig Jr. of Paris; a sister and a brother.

Mildred Fletcher
Mildred Mathies Hazelwood Fletcher, 78, of Fort Smith died Friday, July 16, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a retired quality control supervisor for Wal-Mart Shoe Division and a member of Haven Heights Baptist Church, the Outreachers Sunday School Class and the Senior Choir. She was the widow of Bill Hazelwood.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Haven Heights Baptist Church with burial at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Norman; a stepdaughter, Helen Hirsch of Greenwood; three sons, Bill and Terry Hazelwood, both of Guthrie, Okla., and Ronald Hazelwood of Anaheim, Calif.; two stepsons, Timothy Fletcher of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Travis Fletcher of Las Vegas; three brothers, Herbert Mathies of Poteau, Clark Mathies of Oakdale, Calif., and Drue Mathies of Fir Oaks, Calif.; two grandchildren, numerous step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Betty Emry
MENA — Betty June Emry, 80, of Mena died Saturday, July 17, 2004, in an area hospital. She was born March 29, 1924, in Stuart, Okla. She was the owner of June’s Cafe and for many years worked in the fabric department of Wal-Mart. She was of the Baptist faith and the widow of Howard Stewart and Jack Emry.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Beasley-Wood Funeral Home Chapel in Mena with burial at Lower Big Fork cemetery in Opal.
She is survived by her sons, Allen Stewart and Jerry Emry, both of Mena; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
