Mary Davis
STIGLER — Mary “Vaughn” Davis of Stigler died Monday, March 8, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker, a member of the Star Baptist Church and the widow of Sumner Davis.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Tamaha cemetery in Tamaha under the direction of King & Shearwood Funeral Home of Stigler.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Funchess of Black Rock and Annette Anderson of McCurtain; five sons, Jimmie Davis of Jonesboro, James and Carl Davis, both of Keota, Terry Davis of Stigler, and Buster Davis of Warner, Okla.; 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to noon today.
Mary Melvin
Mary I. Melvin, 76, of Van Buren died Monday, March 8, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker and attended Chester Free Will Baptist Church. She was the widow of James Melvin.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel in Van Buren with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Tammy Melvin of Van Buren; a son, James Melvin of Fort Smith; a sister, Maggie Bartholomew of Hogeye; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Loyd and Roy Cockrum, Gary and Bobby Bartholomew and Dewayne and Robert Boyd.
The family will visit with friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
James Self
BELLEVILLE — James Forrest Self, 77, of Belleville died Monday, March 8, 2004. He was a retired teacher, librarian, principal, superintendent, County School supervisor Yell County and a cattle and poultry farmer.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Western Yell County Church of Christ with burial at Havana cemetery in Havana under the direction of Cornwell Funeral Home of Danville.
He is survived by his wife, Bea; three sons, Joseph Self of Greenwood, Tommy Self of Russellville and Scott Self of Belleville; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dale Knight, James Patterson, Bill Watson, Larry Baxter, Mitchell Tharp, Carroll Lowery, Paul Smith and Andy Atkins.
Ethel Stanturf
Ethel Stanturf, 68, of Fort Smith died Saturday, March 6, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial of cremains at a Kansas cemetery at a later date.
She is survived by her husband, David; two daughters, Brenda Johnson of Osawtomie, Kan., and Barbara Wilerford of Kansas City, Kan.; three sons, Tommy Smith of Osawtomie, Kan., Willie Haggard of Buryes, Kan., and Louis Strange of Lansing, Kan.; six sisters, Mary Bogard of Jonesboro, Margie Akers, Dorothy Bufford, Lola Ward, Frankie Thomas, and Margaret Lawson, all of Heber Springs; three brothers, Henry Haggard of Walbash, Ind., Ray and Johnny Haggard, both of Heber Springs; 12 grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
Nancy Gabbard
Nancy Beaumont Gabbard, 60, of Van Buren died Monday, March 8, 2004, in a local nursing home. She was a homemaker.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Mount McCurry cemetery in Rudy.
She is survived by two sisters, Dixie Beverly of Chickopee, Mass., and Linn Wofford of Rudy; a brother, Aubrey Beaumont III of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be her nephews.
Nancy Dollar
Nancy Gail Dollar, 31, of Fort Smith died Saturday, March 6, 2004, in Centerton. She was born June 13, 1972, in Fort Smith. She graduated from Northside High School in 1990, was a press operator at Rheem Manufacturing, was recording secretary for Local No. 7893 of the United Steel Workers of America and a member of the Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home in Bentonville with burial at Brush Creek cemetery in Jane, Mo.
She is survived by her son, Clifford Dollar; her mother, Elsie Davis of Centerton; her father and stepmother, Elvin and Armel Davis of Mena; a sister, Kay Davis of Las Vegas; a brother, Elvin Davis of Water Valley, Miss.; her paternal grandmother, Almira Davis of Mena.
Claudia C. Vaughn
Claudia C. Vaughn, 82, of Fort Smith went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 30, 2004. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, James C. Vaughn; her daughter and wonderful son-in-law, Jama Kaye and Gary Watkins of Fort Smith, her grandson and his wife, Phillip and Cassie Watkins of Bella Vista; her brother, Jesse “Dickie” Weaver and his wife, Jean Ann, of Lavaca.
Claudia was an active member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church since the early 1950s. She was a graduate of Fort Smith Senior High class of 1939, which she actively kept organized until her death. The class honored her with the Claudia Curl Vaughn and Class of 1939 Endowed Scholarship at UAFS. She and J.C. established Vaughn Prescription Drug Store in 1953 with the concept that their customers were their family, which is still true today.
Claudia became active in the credit service organization in the early 1950s. She has served as board member and president of the Credit Bureau, president of the Fort Smith Credit Association, president and many other offices in Fort Smith CWI, having 35 years perfect attendance; president and vice president of the Arkansas State CWI; president and other offices of the District 7 CWI; board member and president of ACCA and board member of District 7 ICCA.
Claudia loved working with youth. She and J.C. organized the Sebastian County Girls Softball League. She became District 8 ASA commissioner, holding that office for 33 years. She worked to make ASA softball a national sport. She served as volunteer executive director of the Girls Shelter since 1972, working with over 600 teenage girls who lovingly called her Mrs. Claudia. She helped establish and serve on the board of Comprehensive Juvenile Services. Special Learning Center and chairman of the Sebastian County Quorum Court Youth Activities.
Claudia was honored with the Outstanding Citizen of Fort Smith Award, Volunteer Workers Award from the Justamite Club, Youth Worker of the Year from the Optimist Club, the Golden Deeds Award from the Exchange Club and the Golden Deeds Award from the Exchange Club of Downey, Calif.
A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. today at Grand Avenue Baptist Church with burial at Roselawn cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
Honoring her as pallbearers will be Bob Moody, Jan Colvett, Tom Ashwood, Jerry Robertson, Mike Bock, David Shepherd, Judge Jim Spears and Dr. Ken Seiter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Christine Stipsky, Adge Rush, Bridget Nelson, Debbie Flanagan, June Grizzle, Jenny Oliver, Linda Cates and Dr. Betty Uzman.

Jewell Corbell
Jewell Corbell, 94, formerly of Fort Smith, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1. 2004, in Greenbriar. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Corbell; and her son, John T. Corbell. She was a homemaker and a member of Haven Heights Baptist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Lea and husband Jess of Greenbriar, Barbara Matsoukas and husband Nick of Jacksonville, and Linda Albright and husband Richard of Van Buren; two sons, Otis Corbell and wife Kathleen of New Blaine, and Grover Corbell and wife Sue of Benton; a daughter-in-law, Kaye Corbell of Muldrow; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Oak cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Mike Corbell, Dale Plymale, Mark Albright, Harold Lea Castle, Greg Corbell and Justin Corbell.

Elinor W. Steinbock
Elinor W. Steinbock, a resident of Fort Smith for 44 years, passed away Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin A. Steinbock, in 1996.
Elinor will always be regarded affectionately for her knowledge of fine music and literature, her sense of humor and witty remarks, her gardens and collection of animals. She will be remembered for the many ways she touched the lives of numerous people.
Surviving family members include her children: Valerie Whittlesey (Eleanor Godfrey) of Portland, Ore., Nancy Rose Steinbock of Vernice, Italy, Aimee Lynn Steinbock (Jerry Presley) of Denver, Michael Whittlesey Steinbock of Goldendale, Wash., Phyllis Steinbock Hobson (Jerry Hobson) of Denver, and Steven Steinbock of Fort Smith. She leaves behind her beloved brother, Robert, and sister-in-law, Louise Whittlesey, of Acton, Mass.; and 11 grandchildren, Miranda Johnston, Arthur Lloyd, Evan and Christina Malfer, Hayley, Lindsey, and Carly Presley, Brett, Nicholas and Tristan Hobson, and Nikki Steinbock. She will be dearly missed by her many friends and family members.
Memorial service will be today at 4 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith. Interment will be 11 a.m. Friday at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.

Samuel Howard McGraw
Samuel Howard McGraw, 65, of Fort Smith, formerly of Drew, Miss., died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, in Little Rock. Memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Smith. Visitation will be after the memorial service at 1505 Oak Knolls Circle in Fort Smith.
Mr. McGraw was born on March 2, 1939, in Drew, Miss., to Howard Munford McGraw and Georgia King McGraw. He graduated from Drew High School and attended Mississippi Delta Community College. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. He married
Suzanne Buergler. He was a self-employed retired salesman. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Smith. He loved his grandchildren, race cars, boating and fixing anything broken.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Georgia McGraw.
Survivors include his wife, Suzanne Buergler McGraw of Fort Smith; four daughters, Amy Lander of Fort Smith, Jennifer S. Smith and her husband, Bryan, of Lavaca, Megan Sturgeon and her husband, Ricky, of Springdale, and Sydney McGraw of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Lady Lou Salley of Cleveland, Miss.; and four grandchildren, Jacob Lander, Cami Sturgeon, Drew Sturgeon and Tyler Smith.

BOLES — Joe L. “Baby Joe” Miner, 75, of Boles died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, in his home. He was born April 9, 1929, in Boles. He served in the Navy during the 
Korean War, was a member of the VFW and American Legion, and was owner-operator of a service station.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Buffalo cemetery in Boles under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; a daughter, Belinda Rogers of Boles; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bill Rogers, Bill and Bob Slagle, Don Wright, Thomas Scott and B.D. Mays.
Mildred Coleman
Mildred Coleman, 88, of Van Buren died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a member of Bethlehem Freewill Baptist Church, a homemaker, and the widow of Gene Coleman.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol Hunter and Vickie Landers, both of Van Buren; a son, Eddie Coleman of Van Buren; a sister, Tressie Morrison of Van Buren; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Fred Melton, 48, of Fort Smith died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was a tree trimmer and a member of Revival Fires Church in Sallisaw.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Stigler City cemetery in Stigler, Okla., under the direction of King & Shearwood Funeral Home of Stigler.
He is survived by a fiancee, Lynn; a son, Fred Melton Jr. of Tahlequah, Okla.; his father, Lloyd Melton Sr. of Alma; three sisters, Sandra Melton of Fort Smith, Rebecca Lipton of Sallisaw, and Tammy Gilley of Springdale; three brothers, Lloyd Melton Jr. of Muldrow, Steve and Michael Melton, both of Fort Smith; and his maternal grandmother, Ellie Snow of Stigler.
Sidney Johnson
Sidney S. “Buster” Johnson, 90, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in a local hospital. He was born July 18, 1914, in Crossett. He was retired from Georgia Pacific Corp., a member of South Crossett Missionary Baptist Church, and the widower of Myrl Johnson.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at South Crossett Missionary Baptist Church with burial at Pine Wood cemetery in Crossett under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
He is survived by a daughter, Helen Holland of Fort Smith; a son, Sid Johnson of Fort Smith; a sister, Mamie Wynn of Santa Maria, Calif.; two brothers, Jesse Vestal of Phoenix City, Ala., and J.Y. Vestal of Klamath Falls, Ore.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
