Earl Rothermel Sr.
Earl J. Rothermel Sr., 97, of Van Buren died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, in a local hospital. He was born Aug. 27, 1907, in Little Rock. He was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was retired from the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a train master, an Army veteran of World War II, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Trinity Lodge No. 694 in Little Rock and a member of the VFW.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Edna; a son, Earl Rothermel Jr. of Mount Hermon, La.; a sister, Nadine Stires of South Londonderry, Vt.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Watson, Gary Osborne, Russell McDaniel, Bill Hammock, Melvin Brasuell and Dennis Neidecker.
Mildred Alice Simmons
Mildred Alice Simmons, affectionately known as “Midge,” 62, of Dallas, formerly of Fort Smith, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, in her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Ray Simmons; and her parents, Clifton and Mary Justice. She was a graduate of Fort Smith High School and was of the Catholic faith.
Graveside service was on Thursday at Sacred Hearts cemetery in Rowlett, Texas, under the direction of Restland Funeral Home of Dallas.
She is survived by one daughter, Angie Simmons, and one grandchild, Alyssa Simmons, both of the home; and two sisters, Dorothy Miller of Rogers and Henrietta Stewart of Van Buren.
Mary C. Opper-Pfeiffer
Mary C. Opper-Pfeiffer, 86, of Altus died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, in Florence, Ky. She was a “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II, a baker, a homemaker and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Altus. She was the widow of Albert Vernon Pfeiffer.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. Monday at Shaffer Funeral Home in Ozark. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Altus with burial at St. Mary’s cemetery in Altus.
She is survived by a daughter, Kandy Messick of Florence; two sisters, Christine Harris of Ozark and Gertrude Worley of Missouri; a grandson, Vernon Neil Nicks of Cincinnati; and cherished friends Cheryl Fisher and Geraldine Leding.
Neta Faye Essman Taylor
Neta Faye Essman Taylor, 95, of Charleston died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in Charleston. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Elmer Ralph Taylor; six children, Jimmy Ray, James Bradley, John Mark, Jerry, Sally Ann Taylor and Corina Sue Freeman; a grandson, Micah Taylor; a brother, James Bradley Essman; and sisters Dorothy Jelks, Billie Hatfield and Ima Jean. She was born on July 31, 1909, in Cavanaugh to the late William Clarence Essman and Sarah Allie Rainwater Essman.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston with burial at Mount Hope cemetery north of Charleston.
She is survived by a daughter, Solda Fraum and husband James of Lenexa, Kan.; a daughter-in-law, Jean Taylor of Jesseville; two sons, Larry Taylor of Chickamauga, Ga., and William Taylor of Clarksville; a sister, Alice Flick of Rochester, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Glenda Kay Jones Mitchell
Glenda Kay Jones Mitchell, 52, of Fort Smith died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in Little Rock. She was a former cosmetologist for Beverly Health and Rehab. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Mitchell.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel with entombment at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
She is survived by two sons, Jerald and Mark Medlock, both of Fort Smith; her parents, Ernest and Martha Jones of Kibler; three sisters, Joyce Ann Wright of Fort Smith, Betty Krajewski of Van Buren and Linda Sue Windham of Little Rock; two brothers, Kenneth Jones of Kibler and Gerald Jones of Dyer; one adopted brother, Robert Jones of Kibler; and two grandchildren.

Isaiah “I.D.” Russell
Isaiah “I.D.” Russell of Paris died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in Fort Smith. He is preceded in death by his parents, P.M. and Ida “Gabbard” Russell; and his wife, Lois “Bennett.” He was a veteran of World War II and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Suzanne Forsgren Goodrich
Suzanne Forsgren Goodrich, 55, of Fort Smith passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Suzanne was a lover of nature. She especially enjoyed her horses, birds and dog. Suzanne took great pleasure in listening to all kinds of music and reading books from her library. She devoted 25 years of her life to others by working as a nurse in the emergency room at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her father, Gene Forsgren; her brother, Gene Michael Forsgren; her maternal grandparents, Jim and Grace Boyd; and her stepfather, Gerald Houser.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Roebuck Chapel with a private family committal at Roselawn cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
She is survived by her daughter, Michelle and her husband, Jamie Glidewell of Fort Smith; her mother, Bernie Forsgren Houser of Fort Smith; two stepbrothers, Nick Houser and James P. Houser; two grandchildren, Katy and Courtney Glidewell of Fort Smith; one uncle, Bill Boyd; and a special friend, Don Carson.

Johnny Wayne Jones Sr.
Johnny Wayne Jones Sr., 57, of Barling died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in Fayetteville. He was born May 18, 1947, in Porum, Okla. He was a retired employee of Stephens Production Co., of the Baptist faith, a Vietnam Army veteran and an at-large director on the Barling Board of Directors. Preceded in death by his wife, Neida.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Cavanaugh Freewill Baptist Church with burial at Mayberry cemetery in Central City under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
He is survived by a daughter, Angel Polk and husband Keenen of Fort Smith; a son, Johnny Jones II and wife Debra of Barling; his mother, Ruth Jones of Barling; two brothers, Tommy Jones of Rock Island, Okla., and Roger Jones of Greenwood; and six grandchildren, Ashwyn Polk, Mason Polk, Katie Jones, Alicia Zanelli, Clarissa Purdom and Colton Purdom.

Carl E. Voss
Carl E. Voss, 83, of Little Rock passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, in McAlester, Okla. Carl was involved in electrical construction and contracting all of his life, serving as executive vice president of Fagan Electric for many years. A member of Pulaski Heights Baptist Church, Carl also served as deacon at Immanuel Baptist Church in Fort Smith. A 32nd degree Mason and a Shrine member, Carl was a World War II veteran serving in the European Theater. Carl was past president of the National Electrical Contractors Association, associate member of the Federated Electrical Contractors Association, past president of the 23rd Chapter Little Rock Kiwans Club and 50-year member of Local No. 295 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Carl is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mabel; three daughters, Judy and husband Clyde Stallings, Gloria Kemp, and Charlotte Voss; two sons, Carl and wife Linda Voss, and Roger and wife Cynthia Voss; one sister, Josephine Plummer; sister-in-law, Jean Voss; eight grandchildren, Ginger Schmidt and husband John, Angie Nelson and husband Scott, Kimberly Aitkens and husband Charlie, Richard Voss and wife Mona Gayle, Becca Leichner, Piper Kemp, Matthew Voss, Rachel Voss; and six great-grandchildren, Jalana, Jessica and Jack Schmidt, Mallory Nelson, McKane Leichner and Daric Voss. He was preceded in death by brothers, Henry and Herman David; sisters, Martha Phillips and Margaret Cook; and grandson, Bert Burgess.

Eve Jean Adcock, 75, of Mountainburg died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in her home. She was raised in the Turner community, where she attended classes at the Old Turner School House. She leaves behind many friends and acquaintances that she made during the years that she lived in the Turner community. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Bertie A. Adcock; her parents, William Clayton Ohm and Lilly Blanche Thacker Ohm.

Bertha Hamilton Lynn
Bertha Hamilton Lynn, widow of Curtis N. Lynn, age 89, formerly of Little Rock, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was born Aug. 14, 1915, to Albert and Eva Hamilton at Hope.
She owned Bertha’s Beauty Shop in Little Rock and operated it for 25 years and was an Estee Lauder Beauty consultant for Dillard’s Department Store until her retirement. She was a member and an honorary lifetime steward of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church. She was an American Red Cross and UAMS volunteer.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia Lynn Kennedy and Larry Kennedy of Fort Smith; one grandson, Gregory Kennedy of Boston; and one great-grandson, KaMarian Carlos Mustin of Roland. She is also survived by two sisters, Ann Shelton of Danville, Ill., and Nell Berkler of Fresno, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Hamilton of Mabelvale. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Hamilton of Little Rock; and a sister, Dorothy Weisenberger of Hope.
A gathering of remembrance of Bertha C. Lynn was held Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lynn Lindsey officiating. Burial followed at Pinecrest cemetery.

OZARK — Mollie Harris, 91, of Ozark died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in Ozark. She was bon Nov. 2, 1913, in Webb City. She was a retired nanny.

Porter Eidson, 94, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, in a local hospital. He was born Sept. 4, 1910 in Leonard, Texas. He was the retired owner and operator of the Flamingo Motel, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Clavary Baptist Church in Fort Smith with burial at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Vera; and two sisters, Willie Gatza of Colorado Spirngs, Colo., and Ruth Cole of Newburg, Ore.
