Mary Frances Smith
December 16, 1937 - April 14, 2012
Mary Westfall Smith, 74, of Cabot died Saturday, April 14, 2012, after her battle with cancer. She was born December 16, 1937 in Dade City, Florida to the late Woodrow Thomas and Evelyn Odema Burkhead Huffstutler. Mrs. Smith was a secretary and after retirement, she continued to serve as a caregiver for the elderly. She was a member of Cabot Apostolic Church. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by three husbands, William Rock LaFave, Clifford M. Westfall and Marion D. Smith as well as a brother, Victor Huffstutler, a grandson, Anthony LaFave and a nephew Scott McKinzie.
Mrs. Smith is survived by two children, Tom LaFave (Debi) of Austin and Mary Westfall Cain (Thomas) of Azle, Texas; one sister, Barbara McKinzie (Jerry) of Conway; one niece, Jan Lester (Nathan) of Conway and three grandchildren, Ryan LaFave, Andrea LaFave and Morgan Cain.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Monday April 16, 2012 in the chapel of Moore’s Cabot Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Cabot Apostolic Church with Pastors D.C. Moody and Larry Pearce officiating. Burial will follow at Crestlawn cemetery in Conway. Arrangements are by Moore’s Cabot Funeral Home, (501) 843-5816.
Forrest Andrew Cook
March 1, 1945 - April 15, 2012
Forrest Andrew “Johnny” Cook, 67, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2012. He was born March 1, 1945 in North Little Rock to the late Homer and Ernestine Perry Cook. Mr. Cook served in the U.S. Navy as a cook and later returned to Vietnam as a civilian to work in the supply chain for Dyna Electronics. He loved his animals and was always willing to help others. Mr. Cook played a large role in raising his great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Sybil Joann Cook and Janice Ware.
Mr. Cook is survived by two brothers, Eugene Cook of Seattle, Washington and Jewel Cook of Ward as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff of Madison Health and Rehab Center and Arkansas Hospice for their wonderful care.
Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Moore’s Cabot Funeral Home (501)843-5816, followed by a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. at Mount Carmel cemetery.
Marion Dewey Poole
June 28, 1945 - April 18, 2012
Marion Dewey Poole, 66, of Cabot, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012. He was born June 28, 1945 in Newport, to the late Marion and Ethel Mae Young Poole. Mr. Poole served in the United States Air Force as a small arms instructor before becoming an air traffic controller. During his tenure with the USAF, he received a Commendation Medal, an Achievement Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. After his retirement from the Air Force, he continued working and later retired from the FAA at Little Rock National Airport. Mr. Poole enjoyed horses, shooting sports and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed motorcycles and flying and was a licensed pilot. In addition to his parents, Mr. Poole was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte Gann and a grandson, Greg Iosbaker.
Mr. Poole is survived by his wife Edie Thompson Poole; his children, Kim Hodges of Searcy, Pam Iosbaker of Anchorage, Alaska, Kay Bodan and Shane Phillips, Sr., both of Cabot. Also surviving him are his four grandchildren, Nichole Payne, Stephen Atwell, Shane Phillips II and Fischer Hodges, one great granddaughter, Emma Payne and one brother, Howard Poole of Russell.
A time of visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012 followed by a memorial service beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of Moore’s Cabot Funeral Home (501)843-5816. Memorial gifts may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
Lillian Viola Besancon
January 2, 1918 - April 22, 2012
Lillian Viola Besancon, 94, of Cabot died Sunday, April 22, 2012. She was born January 2, 1918 in Cabot, Arkansas to the late Henry and Viola Sailor Spires. Mrs. Besancon was a resident of Cabot Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Lillian began working at the Jacksonville Ordinance Plant in 1943, making ammunition during World War II. She later retired from Franklin Electric after 37 years of service. After retirement, she was actively involved with the Senior Citizen Center. Family and friends will always remember her wonderful fried chicken and homemade pies. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Besancon was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Howard Besancon; sister, Mary McMillan and her husband, Paul; brother, William Henry Spires; and granddaughter Deborah Elaine Besancon.
She is survived by her two sons, Harold Besancon and his wife, Kathy and Wayne Besancon and his wife, Dianne; four grandchildren, Virginia Besancon, Shelly and her husband, Jason Morden, Heather and her husband, Shane Morden, and Lane Blaylock; six great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 25, 2012 in the chapel of Moore�s Cabot Funeral Home, with services immediately following at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel cemetery.
Faye N. Mayfield
January 8, 1938 - April 23, 2012
Faye N. Mayfield, 74, of Cabot died Monday, April 23, 2012. She was born January 8, 1938 in Thornton to the late Benjamin F. and Dora Dean Nutt. Mrs. Mayfield was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Cabot and was a Merchandising Assistant for J.C. Penney for 25 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd D. Mayfield and a brother, James R. Nutt.
Mrs. Mayfield is survived by her daughters, Phyllis Mayfield and Melinda Bardwell, both of Cabot and her sisters, Margaret Colvert of Orlando, Florida and Patsy Roberts of West Monroe, Louisiana.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at Moore’s Cabot Funeral Home (501)843-5816. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Mount Carmel cemetery.
Virgil Hearne
Virgil “Papa June” Hearne, 84, of Morrilton, formerly of Atkins, died Saturday at Conway Regional Health Center.
He was a retired cattleman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Letha “Nanny” Hearne, one sister and four brothers.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Loid Roland of Morrilton; a granddaughter and her husband, Holly and Michael Whitecotton of Delaware, Ark.; a great-grandson, Trenton Layne Whitecotton and several friends and family.
Graveside memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Atkins City cemetery with Rev. Dean Hicks officiating.
Arrangements are by Lemley Funeral Service.
Lillian Blackard
Lillian Halmes Blackard, 81, of Hartman died Saturday, Aug. 27, at her home.
She retired as a teacher after 39 years, of which 23 years were in the Clarksville School District. She was a member of the Grenade’s Chapel Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fuller and Una Mae Chandler Halmes; and brother, Lowell Halmes.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Paul Blackard; daughter, Karen Nordin of Clarksville; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Carol Blackard of Hartman; two brothers, J.E. Halmes of Ozark and Howard Halmes of Hartman; four grandchildren and their spouses, Jeff and Deanne Blackard and Eric and Amy Blackard, all of Hartman, Nick and LouAnn Blackard of Greenwood, and Bryan and Callie Nordin of Clarksville; and three great-grandchildren she called her “little angels” Abby, Wyatt and Tyler.
Funeral service will be noon today at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frank Grubbs officiating.
Burial will follow at Bethlehem cemetery in Hartman under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home of Clarksville.
Visitation will not be held, but the public is invited to sign the register book.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Blackard, Nick Blackard, David Halmes, Eric Blackard, Bryan Nordin and Eldon Edgin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Johnson County Regional Library.
Lee Young
Lee L. Young, 91, of Russellville, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at the Atkins Nursing Center.
A son of the late James H. and Annie C. Young, he was born Feb. 6, 1914, in Kiowa County, Okla. He was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Russellville where he served as an Elder and a Sunday school teacher for many years. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked as a meat cutter for Kroger in Oakland, Calif., and in Fort Smith before moving to Russellville in the 1950’s, where he ran Lee L. Young Insurance Company for over 25 years. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Benjamin Young, Guy Young and Ewing Young; and three sisters, Eva Delk, Eula Clark and Ann Goodwin.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Garry and Pat Young of Russellville and Larry and Kammie Young of Conway; a brother, Mark Young of Hot Springs; five grandchildren, Kathryn Rose of Russellville, Emily Young of Russellville, and Daniel, Michael and Annabelle Young, all of Conway; and a great-granddaughter, Chloe Mei Rose of Russellville.
The funeral service conducted by Rev. Steve Mosley will be private. Arrangements are by Shinn Funeral Service.
Memorials may be made to the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 1200 North Arkansas Avenue, Russellville, Arkansas 72801.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m., tonight at the funeral home.
Daniel Garrett
Daniel “Dan” Dee Garrett, 84, of Conway, formerly of Clarksville, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at Arkansas Hospice Hospital in Little Rock.
He was a WWII Army veteran and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dee A. and Effie M. Brown Garrett, and daughter, Danella Langston.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, JoAnn Garret of Conway; son, Dickey J. Garrett of Conway; grandchildren, Maridee Hickman of Purcellville, Va., Molly Ann Garrett of Phoenix, Ariz., Mitchell Garrett of Russelville and Elliott Garrett of Phoenix, Ariz.; and three great-grandchildren, Preston and Peyton Garrett and Jessica Madree Hickman.
Graveside service will be 5 p.m. Wednesday at Shrygley cemetery in Coal Hill with Paul Bates officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home of Clarksville.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
William Bonds
William R. “Bill” Bonds, 63, of Atkins, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at his home.
The son of Rubert and Margerie Hughes Bonds, he was born Aug. 15, 1942, in Dover. He was a 1960 graduate of Dover High School, served in the United States Navy, and was the owner and operator of Rural Fencing Company for 30 years. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Monty and Amie Bonds of Russellville, and Jonathan and Andrea Bonds of Dallas, Texas; 3 grandchildren, Rebecca Bonds of Russellville, Tambra L. Bonds, and Sebastian T. Bonds; and a brother, Sam Bonds of Russellville.
Funeral will be 2 pm Wednesday at Humphrey Chapel. Rev. Alan Bradley will officiate. Burial will be at McFadden cemetery at Dover by Humphrey Funeral Service.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
James Russell
James Franklin “Frank” Russell, 79, of Clarksville died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005 in St. Edward Mercy Medical Center.
He was born June 11, 1926 at Clarksville, the son of the late Ed and Frances Hubbard Russell. He was a proud Navy veteran of World War II, having served aboard the Battleship North Carolina in the South Pacific. He was a salesman for Associated Credit Bureaus for many years and was self-employed in real estate in Texas and Arkansas for several years. He was also the “brush hog” man.
He is survived by his beloved companion, Verna Russell; a step-daughter, Mildred Myers of San Diego, Calif.; a step-son, Steve Molnar of Clarksville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Thelma and Eugene Findlay of Culver, Oregon, and Faye Mahoney and Bob Albright of Claskanie, Oregon; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Marie Russell of Clarksville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel with burial at Woodland cemetery in Clarksville under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Mike Jacobs, Wes Kendrick, Lance Fetters, Travis Fetters, Steve Russell and Steve Fetters.
