David Hall
David H. Hall a resident of Edgemont, Arkansas for the past thirteen years passed away Saturday, July 19, 2003 at Baptist health Medical Center in Heber Springs, AR. The son of the late Thomas Hall and Lucille (Wilder) Hall. He was born June 23, 1943 in Overland, Missouri. David and his family lived in North Little Rock and Jacksonville, AR before making Edgemont their home. He worked as a civil service technician for the Arkansas Army National Guard. He was a member of the National Guard Association, VFW Post #1, American Legion Post #1, Hot Springs showman's association and North Little Rock Elks Lodge #1004. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, David Glen Hall and Brother Paul T. Hall. Survived by his wife, Jeanette (Jernigan) Hall, Daughters, Beverly Hall, North Little Rock, Arkansas, Kimberly Vann Dill of Little Rock, Arkansas and Kathy Hall of FT. Lauderdale, Florida, Two Grandchildren, Candice Coyle, North Little Rock, AR and Krystle Morris of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He is also survived by other relatives and his many friends. Visitation for family and friends was at Olmstead Funeral Home Monday evening 6-8 p.m. The funeral service was Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Olmstead Funeral Chapel with Rev D.C. Moody conducting the service. Interment services were at the Rest Hills cemetery at Sherwood Arkansas. David Hall made friends every where he went, and had so many friends that his family would like to consider all of you honorary pallbearers. Arrangements were by Olmstead Funeral Home.

Mrs. Linda Darlene (Towell) Matthews of Edgemont, Arkansas, passed away Monday, July 28, 2003, at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Born in Heber Springs, Arkansas, on November 21, 1948, Linda was 54 years of age. She was the daughter of Anna (Wood) Towell and the late Leonard Towell.A resident of Cleburne County most of her life, Linda grew up in Ida. During the past five years, she had lived at Edgemont, and she was a member of the Fairfield Bay Humane Society. Linda was a bookkeeper, and she was employed by Turner Burkett & Associates in Heber Springs. Known as "Nana" to her grandchildren, she was a wonderful grandmother. She was a member of the Presbyterian Kirk of the Hills at Fairfield Bay. Linda was preceded in death by her father, Leonard Lynn Towell. She is survived by her mother, Anna Towell of Heber Springs, AR; two sons, Stephen Chastain and his wife, Carla, of Rogers, AR and Mark Chastain and his wife, Robyn, of Arkadelphia, AR; two brothers, Leonard Glen Towell of Benton, AR and Irwin Lynn Towell of Heber Springs, AR; her husband, Lawrence (Larry) Matthews of Edgemont, AR; his three daughters, Laurie Brown, Linda O'Donnell, and Vicki Amen and three grandchildren, Quentin, Cahl, and Cade.Linda is also survived by other relatives and her many friends. Visitation was held Wednesday, July 30, from 5-8 p.m. at Olmstead Funeral Home in Heber Springs. Funeral services was held Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. in the Presbyterian Kirk of the Hills with Rev. Bob Hadley officiating. A private intermen followed for family members. Pallbearers will be Donald Southerland, Bruce Southerland, Phillip Smith, Cody Mossier, Gary Endsley, and Mark Goetze.Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Majors, Gary Majors, George Keeter, Bill O'Donnell, John Headen, Chip Blenden, Scott Glaze, and Myron Taylor. Robert Goodwillie
Robert L. Goodwillie, 87, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away July 31, 2003. He was born May 29, 1916, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Frank and Irene Love Goodwillie. He was a graduate of Northeast High School, class of 1933, and was an original alum of Kansas City University. On November 23, 1938, Bob married
Jennette Moseley and celebrated 59 years of marriage until her death in 1997. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service of Kansas City, Missouri, for over thirty years.Bob had a passion for music. He played the piano, clarinet, and saxophone. In his early years, he was a jazz pianist on Kansas City's famous 12th Street Strip. Most recently, he was a member of the Bay Ramblers band in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, where he and Jennette had retired. Bob was an active member of the Methodist Church, the Lions Club, a Boy Scout leader, and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He is survived by his three children, Virginia Pendleton of Ogden, Utah; Barbara (Peter) Hartson of Los Gatos, California, and Bob (Cheryl) Goodwillie of Lenexa, Kansas; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two nieces and six nephews. Funeral services will be held in the Chapel at Mt. Moriah and Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, on Sunday, August 3, at 6:00 P.M. Family will receive visitors one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kansas City Young Audiences organization. Whatever Bob was given in life, he returned in music. Interment was in Woodland Memorial Park at Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. The family requests that memorials be sent to the United Methodist Church at Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. Olmstead Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
Glenn Hackett
Glenn Hackett, 86, of Shirley died Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Indian Rock Village after a lengthy illness. he was born August 5, 1916 in a four-room log cabin on Star Mountain near Shirley. He was the oldest son of William Cleveland Hackett and Myrtle Lillian Jimerson Hackett. He loved learning and was a scholar from an early age. At seventeen he graduated from high school and took a teacher's exam, some college courses, and began a career in education that would span almost fifty years. He taught in several one-room mountain schools where he was paid $35 a month. Glen met and married
one of his students, Mildred Marie Murray of Lute Mountain in 1940. During World War II he enlisted in the Marines and served 19 months in Attu, Alaska. He volunteered with the 5th Marine Division and was on his way to the United States for deployment to Japan when the war ended. He still wanted to be a teacher like his Grandfather Ephraim, but because the pay was so low he became a carpenter. In January of 1950 at the age of 34 he took his wife and daughter, Carolyn, to Fayetteville and entered the University of Arkansas on the GI bill. He graduated with honors in 1952 with a Bachelor's degree in science and returned to teach biology and math at Shirley High School. Their son, Wayne was born in December of that year. After one year he was hired as superintendent and remained in that position for 25 years. He earned his Master's degree in school administration from the University of Central Arkansas in 1956. Soon after, another daughter, Dylene, was born. Glenn began work on his Ph.D. at Oklahoma State University in Still water. However, after two summers of enduring Wayne and Dylene sitting on the sidewalk crying to go home to Shirley, he chose not to finish it. After the sudden death of his wife, Mildred, in 1973, he married
Marilyn Leath Osteen in May of 1974 and became the proud step-father of 10 year-old Woodie Osteen. When he retired in 1978 as Superintendent of Shirley Schools, he became the Director of the Van Buren County Special school at Choctaw for three years. he and Marilyn stayed busy after his retirement serving in the Shirley Community church, the Van Buren County Museum, as a director of Petit Jean Rural Electric Co-op, and of Ozark Opportunities. The Shirley School honored him by dedicating the gym and naming the field house after him. When he was diagnosed with cancer in December of 1996 and suffered a debilitating stroke, he was serving as an AARP tutor in a program he helped establish at Shirley Elementary. Also, he was serving on the White River Area Agency on Aging, and completed a 7 year-term as a trustee for Petit Jean Vo-tech College in Morrilton. Glen was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, and three brothers (Freed, Harold, and Freeman Hackett). He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Hackett, two sons, Wayne Hackett of Shirley and Woodie Osteen of Searcy, two daughters, Carolyn Tobey of Clinton, and Dylene Asley of Farmington, New Mexico, two brothers, Raymond and Ephe Hackett of Shirley, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and other family members, friends, former students and associates. It would take a very long time to summarize all of Glenn's accomplishments and contributions in his lifetime. Many relatives, friends, students have favorite stories and fond memories of Glenn. He was interested and involved in so many different pursuits from ranching and gardening to historical research. Yet, he would not want us to outline and recall all of his achievements publicly - with his humble nature Glenn would be embarrassed. Glenn was an optimistic, hard-working, kind man, who spent a lifetime serving others, promoting education, and loving. He would want all of us to continue on with his personal philosophy. In his own words, "Live to make the world a better place." Funeral services were held Saturday, August 2, 2003 at Roller-McNutt Chapel in Clinton with Reverend Bob Ward officiating. Interment was at Settlement cemetery. Active pallbearers were: Dustin Ashley, Randall Napier, Steve Napier, Adam Hackett, Chad Holcomb, and Micheal Moore. Honorary pallbearers were: Willard Stark, Ellis Ward, Watson Smith, Carl Ashley, Colten Ashley, Nicholas Napier.
Abbi Lane Smith
Abbi Lane Smith, age 5, of Benton; went to be with the Lord on Thursday August 14, 2003. She was born on September 26, 1997 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Abbi was a member of Geyer Springs First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death her brother, Isaac Smith.She is survived by her parents, Brett Kendall Smith and Karen Elaine Willhite Smith; paternal grandparents, Wayne and the late Virgina Smith of Fairfield Bay; maternal grandparents, Dale and Betty Willhite of Oologah, Oklahoma; aunts and uncles, Debbie and Gene Wood of Tulsa, Oklahoma and John and Gayla Willhite of Oologah, Oklahoma; several cousins and lots of friends.Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Geyer Springs First Baptist Church in Little Rock with burial at New Rosemont cemetery in Benton. Ministers were Dr. Bruce Chesser and Chaplin Jim Edge. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ashby's. Willie Joe Nipp
Willie Joe Nipp, of Greers Ferry, was born August 22, 1929 in Obion County, TN and was taken on Friday, August 15, 2003 to the bosom of Abraham to await the Rapture of his Savior.Joe, as he was known to all, retired from the Navy in 1977 after twenty plus years. As a Petty Officer, Joe commenced his active Naval service in San Diego, CA. From there his duties took him to the USS Floyds Bay, USS Shenandoah, USS Wasp, Patrol Squadron Thirty, Patrol Squadron Forty-Two, Patrol Squadron Nineteen, Naval Air Station, Memphis, TN and finally Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Six, Naval Air Station, Norfolk VA. Throughout his extraordinary career, Joe was decorated on numerous occasions, receiving the Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal with four stars, Navy Occupation Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Japanese Occupation Medal, China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, United Nations Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. His last tour with the Helicopter Combat Support Squadron SIX was his final chapter in a successful and uniquely productive career.In 1978, Joe moved to Greers Ferry where he soon began work with the Department of Public Safety in Fairfield Bay, AR. While serving as Chief of Police, he was awarded Manager of the Year in 1988. He retired from DPS in 1992.Joe was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Greers Ferry for over twenty years and while serving in many capacities there, he felt the Lord calling him into the ministry. He had served as Pastor there for over eight years until he felt the need to step down due to his Parkinson's Disease.In Greers Ferry, Joe served his city as an Alderman on the City Council for many years.Joe is survived by his wife of twenty five years, Doris Nipp of Greers Ferry; his children Randy Nipp of Jackson, TN; Tim Nipp of Union City, TN; Debbie Griffin of Hixson, TN; and Dana Carek of Little Rock, AR; his brother Bobby Kent Nipp of Jamestown. NC; his grandchildren, Andrew and Landon Nipp; Don, Melanie and Robert Griffin; and Haden Carek. He was also survived by many other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys Boston Nipp and Thomas Calvin Nipp of Union City, TN; three sisters, Mary Louise Hurst of Selmer, TN; Margaret Ella Griffin of Union City. Marvin F Kreier, MD, USAF RET, age 78, went to his heavenly home Friday, August 22, 2003. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2003 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Portage with Rev. Alan Boeck officiating. Internment will follow at Hillside cemetery in Poynette. Donald R. Small
Donald R. Small passed quietly Thursday, August 28, 2003 after a two year bout with cancer. Don was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 25, 1923. He was preceded in death by his mother Elsie, father Raymond and brother Richard. Don joined Western Electric (AT&T) in 1944 as a mail clerk. He fulfilled his first career there and retired early in 1976 as an engineering manager and moved to Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. Don was proud to be a part of the burgeoning telecommunications and technology businesses. In 1980 Don and his dearest love and business partner Rita Ann opened D/R Realty in Fairfield Bay. For twenty years they found not only a second career but great joy and fulfillment in helping people find the perfect home in the community they loved so much. Don's expertise, personality and savvy could have made him a fortune, but his generosity prevented it. He was always the first to donate any resources to family and friends in need - whether time, money advice or just a listening ear. Don is survived by his loving wife Rita Ann, four daughters, five sons, 25 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. He is also survived by so many dear friends he considered his own family as well. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 27 at 3 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 10849 Edgemont Road, Edgemont, Arkansas 72044. Don's family would like to extend an invitation to join them in the celebration of his life. Wendall L. Nelson
Wendell L. Nelson of Fairfield Bay, son of the late Melvin and Alma (Lundquist) Nelson died September 15, 2003. He was born in Virginia, Minnesota on July 11, 1931 and attended Virginia Public Schools and was a graduate of the University of the State of New York. Mr. Nelson was an Endowment Life Member in the National Rifle Association, a member of NARFE, a longtime member of the Masonic Bodies, an amateur radio operator (KOQPP), a pilot, fisherman, hunter and an avid vegetable gardener. He was never without a canine companion. Wendell was a dedicated civic leader, serving on the city councils of Chandler, Minnesota and Gettysburg, South Dakota. He was also the Technical Coordinator for the Five County Translator Districts in north central South Dakota and served on the Arkansas Criminal Detention Facilities Review Committee. Mr. Nelson attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer while serving the National Guard and 13 years in the Army Reserve. He worked for RCA for several years and then the United States Government. His career took him to Greenland (BMEWS), Africa, Guam, and many different states. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in Alaska in 1991 after 24 years of service. Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lowell and Gerald, and a sister, Marilyn LoPresti. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Shirley (Anderson); two sons, Mark (Veronica) of New Vim, Minnesota, and David (Janice) of Grays Lake, Illinois; a daughter Cynthia Zwingle(Michael) of Pleasanton, California; five grandchildren, Alexander Zwingle and Lauren, Noah, Hannah, and Emma Nelson and a sister, Margaret (Roger) Nelmark of Fairfield Bay and several nieces and nephews. Wendell and his family request memorials in his name to the American Cancer Society or the Shriners Children's Hospital Funeral arrangements are pending. A memorial service was held Friday, September 19 at 2 p.m. in the Roller McNutt chapel in Clinton with Allen Freudenburg officiating.

Raymond E. "Barney" Ackerman, 78 of Nevada died Friday, September 19 at Rolling Green Village where he had been a resident since April. Catholic Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the Memorial Lutheran Church with Father Jon Seda officiating. Burial with Military rites will following in the St. Patrick's Catholic cemetery.Barney was born on February 20, 1925 in Nevada to Ben and Eva (Earl) Ackerman. Eileen Greiner on October 19, 1946 at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada. He started in farming and later owned and operated businesses in Nevada before retiring from Hoffman LaRoche of Ames in 1987. Barney was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada, William F. Ball American Legion in Nevada, V.F.W. of Arkansas, 3rd and 4th degree of Knights of Columbus and a 10 year member of the Nevada Fire Department. Barney and Eileen moved from Nevada to Fairfield Bay, Arkansas in 1987. Barney is survived by his wife, Eileen Ackerman of Nevada; 3 sons, Dennis Ackerman (Tonia) of Des Moines, Joe Ackerman (Tammy) of Nevada, and Bob Ackerman (Jean) of Omaha, Nebraska;8 daughters, Ruth Clements (Dennis) of Centre, Alabama, Diane Horn (Dennis) and Judy Ackerman (Jack Mathews), both of Des Moines, Sharon Sperry (Eldon) of Polk City, Mary Severson and Jean Kingsbury (Ron), both of Nevada, Terri Arnold (Randy) of Story City, and Kathy Bodenhamer (Bob) of Mt. Ronald Lee Brumbaugh
Ronald Lee Brumbaugh of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, passed away Monday, September 22, 2003, at the Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin, Tennessee. Born in Saint Jo, Texas, on December 11, 1919, Mr. Brumbaugh was 83 years of age. He was the son of the late Harry and Susie (Austin) Brumbaugh.Mr. Brumbaugh was a retired Colonel with 30 years of service with the United States Air Force. He was a member of the Higden Church of Christ. Mr. Brumbaugh was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, on November 14, 1988.He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald J. and Carolyn Brumbaugh of Portland, Tennessee. Mr. Brumbaugh is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.Funeral services for Mr. Brumbaugh were held Friday, Sept. 26, at 1 p.m. at the Higden Church of Christ with Carroll Sites officiating. Helen Marr
Helen Marr, a long time resident of Fairfield Bay, left this life to be with Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 21st. She left behind and will be greatly missed by her sister Ruth and her husband, Ken Connor or Fairfield Bay, their children Jan and Doug Heimerman from Alvarado, Texas and son Bob (who is waiting for Helen in Heaven) and Susan Conner of Pensacola, Florida. Helen's brother Maz and wife Margaret with daughter Cheri and husband Ron Hill from Las Vegas, Nevada. Their sons Russ and Nancy Boyd and Tom and Lynn Boyd of Anaheim, California. Helen belonged to the Fairfield bay Baptist Church and was a member of the Preceptor Alpha Xi Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Helen shared her love with many many friends in Fairfield Bay.
Ester Kelley
Ester Kelley, age 88 passed away in her sleep on Wednesday, September 24, 2003. She was living with her son, John and family in Norcross, GA for the past several years. She is survived by John, wife Marcia, two granddaughters, Jennifer and Kaitlyn, two sisters, Marion Lainhart, Donna Lemke who live in Indiana and a brother, Ralph who lives in Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph. Ester and Ralph moved from Des Moines, Iowa to Fairfield Bay in 1973. They were members of the Fairfield Bay United Methodist Church and involved in many activities and organizations in the community.
Norman G. Brawley
Mr. Norman G. Brawley, age 75, passed away at his home in Fairfield Bay, AR, on Tuesday, October 7, 2003, with his loving wife of 53 years at his side. Born in Gilmer, Texas, on July 5, 1928, he was the son of the late Hugh and Geneive (Freemont) Brawley.
After serving as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force, Norman retired from the Marley Company of Mission, Kansas, after a long 37 year career in finance. Norman is a long standing member of the St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, where while living there, he was very active. The family, his wife Helen, daughter Linda Trewin, granddaughter Stephanie Vossen and husband Jeff, great granddaughter Emily Vossen, and nephew Mike Austin invite you to join in a celebration of life service was held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at Floral Hills Funeral Home in Kansas City, MO. Miss Inez Louise Borton of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at the Indian Rock Village Nursing Home in Fairfield Bay.Born in New Albany Township, Iowa, on February 17, 1921, Miss Borton was 82 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Nelson and Ada (Harkins) Borton. Miss Borton was a retired employee of Northwestern Bell Telephone. She was a member of the Fairfield Bay Baptist Church. She is survived by her two nieces, Linda Holton and Kathy Hadgood, both of California and her special friend, Beverly Weaver of Shirley, AR. Visitation was held Thursday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m. at the Fairfield Bay First Baptist Church with funeral services beginning at 4 p.m. with Rev. Ronny Waycaster officiating. Nurses who cared for Miss Borton at Indian Rock Village will serve as pallbearers at her service. Interment was in the Clemons cemetery at Clemons, Iowa. Doris Robertson Taylor
Dorris Robertson Taylor passed away Monday, October 27, 2003, at Indian Rock Village. She was the daughter of John and Ella Robertson, born November 27, 1923, at Shreveport, Louisiana. The family moved to Monroe when Dorris was seven.Her grandfather was Judge Reed, an early publisher of The Sun-Times. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rebecca Suzanne Taylor, in 1948, and by one brother, George B. Robertson. She is survived by her husband, Marion J. Taylor of Fairfield Bay, AR, and her son, John Taylor and daughter-in-law, Ligia Taylor of San Juan, Costa Rica, granddaughter, Erin Weathers of Oklahoma City, OK, and three great-granddaughters.Graveside services were held at Riverside cemetery, Monroe, Louisiana, on Thursday, October 30, at 10 a.m. conducted by Mulheam Funeral Home. In recognition of Dorris' love and concern for animals, the family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to any Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or to any animal shelter.
