May Lee Pierce (Clement)
May 11, 1924 - September 14, 2011

May Lee Clement Pierce, of Grapevine, Arkansas, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, September 14, 2011.
Born May 11, 1924, in Grapevine, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Nancy Hattie Ginnett Clement. She was reared and received her early education in Grapevine, graduating from Grapevine High School.
She and Milford Cline Pierce were married March 22, 1945. May Lee was a home maker, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Rison United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Milford Cline “Red” Pierce; a son, Martin Pierce and a daughter, Beth Ruffin.
Her survivors include two sons, John Pierce, of Pine Bluff and Freddie Pierce, of Grapevine; three daughters, Linda Stewart, of Austin, Texas, Dianne Abington, and Janie Rogers, both of Russellville; thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 10:00 AM, Friday, September 16, 2011, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son, with Reverend Donald Ruffin officiating. Burial will follow in Black Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Mathew Stewart, Steven Pierce, Chris Abington, Benjamin Ruffin, Sam Pierce, Luke Rogers and Josh Rogers.
The family requests, that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Black Cemetery Association, 270 Brewer Road, Rison, AR 71665 or Rison United Methodist Church

Patricia "Diane" Johnson (Newton)
May 25, 1945 - September 13, 2011

Patricia "Diane" Johnson, age 66, of Pine Bluff, died Tuesday, September, 13, 2011, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock. She was born May 25, 1945, in Little Rock, a daughter of Mr. Joe Newton, Jr. and the late Jeanette Staton Newton.

Mrs. Johnson was reared and educated in England, Arkansas, and was a graduate of England High School. She attended Central Baptist College.

She was a member of Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her mother and a brother, Tim Newton.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband, James Johnson, whom she married December 20, 1966, in England, Arkansas; two daughters, Amy Carpenter (Jason) of Farmers Branch, Texas, Crystal Johnson of Pine Bluff; two brothers, Joey Newton (Jackie) of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, Keith Newton (Susan) of Foley, Alabama and one sister, Marilyn Bates (Roger) of Pine Bluff; sister-in-law, Sondra Newton; two grandchildren, Lacha and Graham Carpenter.

Funeral services will be Friday, September 16, 2011, at 1:00 PM at Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with Dr. Roger Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Keo Cemetery at Keo.

The family will receive friends at the Church Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may take the form of contributions to Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church Open Door Sunday School Class Special Fund, 5130 Bobo Road, Pine Bluff, Arkansas 71603.

Norman Eugene "Red" Harper
February 26, 1937 - September 17, 2011

Norman Eugene "Red" Harper, 74, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas passed away Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Arkansas Convalescent Center.

Born February 26, 1937, in Faulkner County, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Henry and Emma Cavins Harper.

Mr. Harper had worked in the maintenance industry most of his life. He was the maintenance personal for Bradshaw Apartments, for several years, as well as a boiler operator for Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

He is survived by his sons, David Harper (Allyson) of Marion, Arkansas and Donald Harper of Tulsa, Oklahoma; his daughter, Kathy Cooper (James) of Pinckney, Michigan; his sister, Jewell Weeks of Pine Bluff; his brother, James Harper of Holland, Michigan; his grandchildren, Matthew, Zachary, Rodney, Dillion and Dustin Harper; and his loving friend and companion, Diane Bradshaw of Pine Bluff.

Services will be held 10:00 AM, Tuesday, September 20, 2011 in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son. Burial will follow in Cypress Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Robinson's.

Edith Hayes (Taylor)
November 6, 1909 - September 17, 2011

Edith Taylor Hayes, 101, of White Hall went to be with her Lord and savior Jesus Christ on September 17, 2011.

She was born November 6, 1909, in Grant County, a daughter of the late John Travis Taylor and Martha Cordelia Evans Taylor.

She attended the Ellis School in Grant County where she lived until moving to the Hardin Community in 1932.

She was a member of Hardin New Life Apostolic Church and served as Secretary-Treasurer for thirty seven years.

She worked at Dollarway School Cafeteria for eleven years prior to her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. H. Hayes; a son, John David Hayes; parents; four brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie Hayes and Elisabeth Hayes; daughter-in-law, Margaret Hayes all of White Hall; grandchildren, Laura Hulett of Jonesboro, AR, DeWayne Hayes of Norwich, VT and Lisa Merritt of Sheridan, AR; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10 AM, Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at the Hardin New Life Apostolic Church with Reverend Duray Aldridge and Reverend Jimmy Herring officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors.

Memorials may be made to the Hardin New Life Apostolic Church, Building Fund, 10608 Hwy 270, White Hall, AR 71602.

Billye Jean Smith (Gorman)
December 30, 1938 - September 17, 2011

Billye Jean Smith, 72, of Pine Bluff, passed away, Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Trinity Village Medical Center.
Born December 30, 1938, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, she was the daughter of the late Bartley Francis and Gertrude Burkhalter Gorman. She was reared and received her early education in Pascagoula, graduating from high school there. She received her Bachelor’s Degree at Mississippi State College for Women and later received her Master’s Degree in Accounting at Auburn University.
Mrs. Smith worked as a Certified Public Accountant for Caterpillar Incorporated for several years. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Charles Smith and her parents.
Survivors include, her sons, Donald Charles Smith, Jr., of Mabelvale and Charles William Smith, III, of Fredrick, Maryland; her sister, Bette Sue Thompson, of Atlanta, Georgia; her grandchildren, Shannon Nicole Hardin, Joshua Lee Cohen, Jennifer Michelle Ray, Amber Smith, and Ashley Smith; and five great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, September 21, 2011, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son, with Reverend Rick Porter officiating.

Carol Harkins Nichols
September 3, 1929 - September 18, 2011

Carol Harkins Nichols, 82, of Pine Bluff, died Sunday, September 18, 2011 at UAMS in Little Rock.

She was born September 3, 1929 in Tallassee, Alabama, daughter of Clyde and Hazel Holland Harkins.

Mrs. Nichols was reared and received her early education in Florida and Alabama, graduating from Coffey High School in Florence, Alabama. She earned her B.A. in English from Florence State Teacher's College (now University of North Alabama) in 1947. She then taught school in Acworth, Georgia, where she met the love of her life, John C. Nichols, whom she married July 8, 1950 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

She was a devoted wife and mother. She also worked as a church administrator at Lakeside United Methodist Church for several years.

Mrs. Nichols was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Pine Bluff, Sesame Club and PEO.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Joyce Harkins Walker, and husband.

Survivors include her son, Mark Nichols of Little Rock and his wife, Cheri; three daughters, Joy Nichols of Little Rock; Gail Dawson and her husband, Ron, of Ponte Vedra, Florida and Anita Barger and her husband, Erwin D. "Bud”, of Dunwoody, Georgia; and five grandchildren, Rachel Dawson Routledge, Andrew Dawson, John Barger, Will Nichols and Allison Barger.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Lance Clemmons officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Nichols home in Pine Bluff.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 717 West 32nd Avenue, Pine Bluff, Arkansas 71603.

Ruby Nichols Register (Stephens)
December 21, 1914 - September 20, 2011

Ruby Stephens Nichols Register, 96, of Enid, Oklahoma, formerly of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and Redwood Falls, Minnesota, passed away, Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at her home.
Born December 21, 1914, in Kedron, Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late James Alexander and Mary Lula Neece Stephens. She was reared and received her early education in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School. She went on to receive her Bachelors of Education Degree from Arkansas A&M College, now the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
In 1938, she married Jesse Clark Nichols. They spent the next thirty-one years together, raising their family, until his passing in 1969. Mrs. Nichols taught 3rd grade in the Watson Chapel School District for some thirty years, before retiring in 1973. During those years, she touched many a children’s life. She lived in Pine Bluff until the late 1970s, and at that time she moved to Texas with her sister.
While living in Texas, she met Orin “Cash” Register, and they were married at Fun N Sun, Too in San Benito, Texas. They spent their summers in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, Mr. Register’s home state, and their winters in Texas. They spent eighteen years together until he passed away.
Mrs. Register was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. She was a devout Christian woman and while in Pine Bluff, she was a member of First Baptist Church. She was an avid golfer and loved playing bridge and other card games. She was a Domino Champion in 2007and won First Place in the Ladies Singles Shuffle Board Tournament at Victoria Palms Resort in Texas. She spent time twice a week playing dominos at the senior center in Enid, Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Jesse Nichols; her second husband, Orin “Cash” Register; her son Paul Nichols; her brothers, Hunter and James Stephens; and her sisters, Coloma Leath, Mammie Allison and Virgie Pryor.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy Mason and husband, Gene, of Enid, Oklahoma; step-children, Norita Butzer and husband, David, of Redwood Falls, Minnesota; Buffy Register, of Minnesota and Ken Register, of California; five grandchildren, Rhea Mishelle Priebe, Karl Nichols, Eric Nichols, Dr. Merrilee O’Meilia and Mitchell Mason; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, September 26, 2011, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Pine Bluff, Arkansas with Reverend Matt Norton officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30 PM Monday at Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Home. Friends may sign the online register at www.ralphrobinsonandson.com. Friends in Enid, Oklahoma may sign the register at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to Central Christian Church,

Laverne Croy
July 26, 1942 - September 23, 2011

Laverne Croy, age 69, of White Hall, died Friday, September 23, 2011, at her residence. Mrs. Croy was born July 26, 1942, in Altheimer, the daughter of the late Johnie William and Hazel Norine Parish Bates.

Mrs. Croy was reared and educated in White Hall. She was a 1961 graduate of White Hall High School.

Mrs. Croy was a member of the White Hall United Pentecostal Church.

She had worked at Simmons First National Bank for twenty nine and one-half years before retiring in 2009.

Mrs. Croy is survived by her husband, James Clifford Croy, whom she married March 30, 1963, in White Hall; son, Ronald Croy of Elkland, Missouri; daughter, Regina Priest of White Hall; brother, Bill Bates of Cabot; two sisters, Mary Elder of Mesquite, Texas and Rita Wingard of White Hall; four grandchildren, Jason Priest of White Hall, Jessica Croy of Tennessee Colony, Texas, Emily and Austin Croy of Elkland, Missouri.

Funeral services will be Monday, September 26, 2011, at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with Reverend A. D. Hill officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Robinson's Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

Billy Denzil "Gov" Kesterson
December 7, 1933 - September 22, 2011

Billy D. "Gov" Kesterson, 77, a resident of Pine Bluff, died Thursday, September 22, 2011, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Born December 7, 1933, in Rowell, he was a son of John Will and Lula Wages Kesterson.

Mr. Kesterson was reared and received his early education in Pine Bluff. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Billy Denzil Kesterson married Sue Fielding in Pine Bluff, on April 9, 1953. Mr. Kesterson worked two years for the Pine Bluff Police Department. He was an automotive electrician at Joe’s Auto Electric for 32 years.

Mr. Kesterson was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Brenda Kesterson; one brother, Johnny Bob Kesterson.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Kesterson of Pine Bluff; one son, John Earl Kesterson of Victoria, Virginia; two daughters, Vicky Carnes of Victoria, Virginia, and Bobbie Lynn Kesterson of Pine Bluff; one sister, Patsy Bradford of Rison; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren.

The visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 PM Sunday, September 25, 2011, at Ralph Robinson & Son.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM Monday, September 26, 2011, in Fitzhugh Cemetery with Brother George Reeves officiating, and under the direction of Ralph Robinson & Son.
