John L. Franklin Patten
PARAGOULD -- John L. Franklin Patten, 74, of Paragould died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, in Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.
A Navy veteran, Mr. Patten was born July 14, 1932, in Rector. He was a retired employee of Paragould City Light and Water and member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Robin Patten of Paragould; two brothers, Robert Patten of North Fort Myers, Fla., and Jim Patten of Carrollton, Ga.; one granddaughter, Emily Patten; and one great-grandson, Davin Jones, both of Paragould.
Mr. Patten was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Patten; his parents, Sam and Emma Patten; two grandchildren, Jeremi and Katherine Patten; and by one sister, Margie Sammons.
Funeral service will be today at 2 p.m. in Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Ed Warren officiating. Burial will follow in Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until service time today.
Pallbearers will include Bill McCartney, Brett Bradford, Tim Eason, Frank Curtis, Butch Johnson and Phil Cable.
Memorials may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, Paragould Light Water and Cable Utility Benevolence Fund, or a charity of your choice.
Vernetta P. Pettigrew
WYNNE -- Vernetta P. Pettigrew, 55, of Wynne died in Cross Ridge Hospital, Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006.
Survivors include her sister, Gloria Franklin of San Bernardino, Calif.; and brothers, Grady Pettigrew Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; Leonard Pettigrew of San Francisco, George Pettigrew of Wynne, Ray Pettigrew of Memphis and Jimmy Pettigrew of Marianna.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in William Land Church of God in Christ at Wynne with Alvin Coleman Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Casteel Cemetery
at Forrest City. Woodard Funeral Home of Wynne is in charge.
Visitation will be Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church.
Lucille Reeves
LEACHVILLE -- Miss Lucille Reeves, 81, of Leachville died Thursday, Dec. 7, in Jonesboro Healthcare.
Born at Piggott, she was the daughter of the late Brack and Vernie Eubanks Reeves. She had lived most of her life in Leachville, where she was a member of First Baptist Church.
She is survived by two brothers, Raymond Reeves of St. Louis and Charles Reeves of Jonesboro.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Howard Funeral Service Chapel at Leachville with the Rev. Rudy Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Leachville Cemetery.
Family and friends will gather at the funeral home for visitation at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by the funeral service.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Eldried, Charles Cobb, Harvey James, Jerry Shrable, James "Peewee" Thomas and Marvin Brown.
Steven Rutledge
NEWPORT -- Mr. Steven Rutledge left this world at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006.
He was born Jan. 16, 1948, the son of William Leon and Jessie Mae Camp Rutledge.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leon Rutledge; his mother, Jessie Mae Rutledge; and two infant brothers, William Leon Rutledge Jr. and Leondias Camp Rutledge.
Steven was a self-employed farmer who spent his career working alongside his father, brother and son. He was a lifelong member of Holden Avenue Church of Christ, where he served as an Elder.
Steven drew on his faith and trust in the Lord to see him through every day of his life. He never wrote in his Bible; he kept the Word in his head and in his heart, and there he found his peace and understanding through the worst of loss and illness.
He never complained about the trials in his life. He knew God's loving hand was always near and His will would be done. Steven loved his family and friends -- often "friend" meant "family" to him.
He loved to laugh. Steven could find humor in the most remote subjects and bring it to us all to laugh along. He loved spending time with his kids, grandkids and "adopted" grandkids, and especially loved the sound of their laughter.
He believed in being genuine, truthful, and honest. He believed in God and God's will. He fought tirelessly for what he believed and left us a better world to live in. We have lost a husband, a father, a brother and a friend all too soon, and he will be truly missed by all of us.
What Steven would wish for all us he's left behind is for us to live our lives like Christ, so that we can see him again in Heaven one day.
He is survived by his wife, Loys; two sons, Jeffery Rutledge and wife Amy of Newport, and Wesley Rutledge and wife Holly of Chicago; one daughter, Glenda Rutledge of Tulsa, Okla.; one grandchild, Benjamin Steven Rutledge; one brother, Justin Rutledge and wife Susie of Newport; one sister, Angela Tate and husband Bill of Pennington; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Holden Avenue Church of Christ. Interment will be in Memory Garden Cemetery
at Johnstown.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Jackson's Newport Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy McCartney, Lynn Dixon, Chet Rutledge, Dowell Kohler, William Tate, Burl Tate, Brad Benefiel, Joel Curtis and Jason Wolf. Honorary pallbearers will be these close friends, J.C. McMinn, Bob Stiger, Raymond Davis, Roger Bowman, David May, Gay Lacy III, Lewis Jones, Dub Sullivan, Junior Hinkle, Bobby Taylor, Alvin Mullins and many others too numerous to name whom Steven loved and held in the highest regard.

Richard Summers
OSCEOLA -- Richard Summers, 79, died Dec. 4, 2006.
He was born April 2, 1927 at Sioux City, Iowa, and was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Florence Summers, and survived by his friends at Osceola Healthcare, the surrounding community and the parishioners of St. Matthew's Catholic Church at Blytheville.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Matthew's Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Pallo officiating. Burial follows in Memory Gardens at Blytheville. There will be no visitation.

Sylvia Montgomery Taylor
PARAGOULD -- Sylvia Montgomery Taylor, 93, of Paragould died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, in Paragould Nursing Center.
Mrs. Taylor was born in Dunklin County, Mo., on Dec. 25, 1912. She retired from General Motors in Flint, Mich., and was a member of 7th & Mueller Church of Christ.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Athern Gray of Paragould; one grandson, Ronnie Kibler; four great-grandchildren, Kevin Kibler, Brad Kibler, Sonya Huffmaster and Shannon Morris; and by seven great-great-grandchildren, Tanisha, Shania, Kristyn, Jessica, Shelby, Scotty and Shane.
Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents, John H. and Eddie Jane Hollis Montgomery; her husband, John Pinkney Taylor; two brothers, Lancie Montgomery and Wiley Montgomery; three sisters, Ollie Barlow, Alice Pankey and Nola Quinn; two stepmothers, Lillie Bailey Montgomery and Nancy Cochran Montgomery; and by one grandson, Kenny Kibler.
Visitation will be today from 6-9 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.
A celebration of life service will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, in Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Maurice Hurd officiating. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery.
Memorials to Paragould Children's Home would be appreciated.
Wilford "W.W." Taylor
HOXIE -- Wilford "W.W." Taylor, 84, of Hoxie died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006 at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
Mr. Taylor was born Jan. 23, 1922 at Smithville, the son of W. S. and Vida Kendall Taylor.
He attended school in Smithville, Strawberry and graduated from Sloan Hendrix Academy in 1941.
Entering the United States Army in 1942, he served for 3-and-a-half years with the 834 Engineer Aviation Battalion, Company C in Washington state, England and France.
United in marriage to Lorene King on Dec. 20, 1946 in North Little Rock, Wilford attended the University of Central Arkansas in Conway and graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1949 with a BSE in Vocational Agriculture.
He was the first Vocational Agriculture teacher with the Hoxie School, holding that position for 13 years. The FFA Chapter members earned many awards during his tenure. Upon leaving his teaching position he was appointed as postmaster at Hoxie by President John F. Kennedy. He held that position until his retirement in 1987.
Wilford was active in the community, was a charter member of the Hoxie Housing Authority and served as a commissioner from 1964 to 1988.
He was an active member of Hoxie United Methodist Church, serving in several leadership positions including president of the United Methodist Men.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene King Taylor of the home; two sons, Jerry Taylor of Burke, Va., and Tim Taylor of Walnut Ridge; one daughter, Sandra Thresher of Earle; six grandchildren, John Taylor, Mark Taylor, Brian Acre, Jamie Welch, Leah Williams and Chan Workman; three great-grandchildren, Allie Thresher, Michael Workman and Kylie Welch.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Inez Goff.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Hoxie United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Winberry and the Rev. Jimmy Dale Thresher officiating. Burial will follow at Smithville Cemetery
at Smithville under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service at Walnut Ridge.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Friday at Higginbotham Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge.

Dianne Farmer Wallis
CHERRY VALLEY -- Dianne Farmer Wallis, 53, of Cherry Valley died Wednesday, Dec. 6 at her residence.
She was born Sept. 20, 1953, in Earle, the daughter of William Elton and Willie Kathleen Miller Zachary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Willie Zachary.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Wallis; two sons; one daughter; three brothers; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m. in Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home Wynne Chapel. Interment will follow in Akin Cemetery
in Vandale.
Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home of Wynne, 238-9400.
