Pamela Cannon

Pamela Jane Fellars Cannon, 48, of Fountain Hills died Aug. 9, 2001.

She was born March 13, 1953 in Phoenix and graduated from Phoenix Christian High School.

Survivors include her sister, Nancy Finch in Eagar, Ariz.; brothers, Rev. Richard “Dick” Fellars of Phoenix and Dewey Fellars of Black Canyon City; and 14 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Hansen Desert Hills Chapel, 6500 E. Bell Rd., Scottsdale.

Elizabeth Edwards

Elizabeth “Betty” Edwards, age 75 of Fountain Hills, died Sept. 20 at the Life Care Center of Scottsdale.

Mrs. Edwards was a homemaker who was born on Nov. 17, 1925 in New York City. She was a member of the Church of the Ascension.

Her husband, Robert F. Edwards of Fountain Hills; son Robert M. Edwards of Fountain Hills; daughter Noreen (Al) Kurdzialek of Fountain Hills; five grandchildren: Robert and Blake Edwards and Stacy, Al, Jr. and Ciara Kurdzialek and two great-grandchildren Hunter Edwards and Cylee Horwath survive her.

Visitation was held Monday, Sept. 24, with at Rosary service at 7 p.m. at the Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 10 a.m. at Church of the Ascension. Interment was at Paradise Memorial Gardens, located at 92nd St. and She Blvd. in Scottsdale.

Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1028 E. McDowell Rd., Phoenix, AZ, 85006.

Florence Truscott

Florence R. Truscott, 88, of Scottsdale died Sept. 21, 2001.

Born Nov. 27, 1912 in Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Truscott had worked as a dairy department manager at food stores during her adult career.

She was a former member of the Eagles Club in Detroit.

Survivors include her son, Thomas (Barbara) Truscott of Fountain Hills; daughter, V. Gayle (Richard) Stone of Scottsdale; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Visitation was held Sept. 22 and 23, with a service Sept. 24 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Interment was at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Joseph Coombs

Joseph Coombs, who designed Lake Havasu City and much of the original master plan for Fountain Hills died Sunday, Sept. 22, in Prescott.

He was 75.

Coombs was also instrumental in assisting with the purchase of London Bridge and its relocation to Lake Havasu City.

He also was involved with the construction of the World’s Tallest Fountain in Fountain Hills.

No formal services are planned.

Stella Czaplicki

Stella Czaplicki, 78, of Fountain Hills died Sept. 27, 2001.

Born June 17, 1923 in Jersey City, N.J., Mrs. Czaplicki was a homemaker.

She is survived by her daughter, Joy Rasmussen (Richard) of Fountain Hills; granddaughter, Cheryl Shea (Bart) of Fountain Hills; and two great-grandchildren, Mark and Katelyn Shea of Fountain Hills.

Private services will be held.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Social Concerns Fund, P.O. Box 17444, Fountain Hills, AZ 85269.

Emile Doucet

Emile J. Doucet, 65, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 7, 2001 at his residence.

Born March 23, 1936 in Waltham, Mass., Mr. Doucet worked as a machinist during his adult career. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys L. Doucet of Fountain Hills; daughter, Brenda Marie of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; sons, Michael of Phoenix, Paul of Mesa and Stephen of Hudson, Mass.; sisters, Jeanette Havard of Waltham and Margaret Lolly of Hollywood, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Oct. 9 at Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills.

Quentin Stratton

Quentin Lee Stratton, 36, of the Fort McDowell Indian Community died at his residence Oct. 2, 2001.

Born Oct. 2, 1965 in Phoenix, Mr. Stratton worked as a construction laborer.

Survivors include his father, Earl B. Stratton Jr. of Phoenix; mother, Marylend Thomas of Fort McDowell; wife, Teri Stratton of Winslow; sons, Shiloh Stratton of Winslow and Quentin L. Stratton Jr. of Glendale; daughter, Monica Stratton of Glendale; brothers, Earl B. Stratton IV of Fort McDowell; Delano, Cainan and Bevan Thomas, all of Fort McDowell; sisters, Pansey and Nimord Thomas, Fort McDowell; and maternal grandmother, Lena Naltazan of San Carlos.

Visitation was held Oct. 5 until Saturday morning at the family residence and a service was held Oct. 6 at the Fort McDowell Community Center. Interment was at Fort McDowell cemetery.

Harry Varner
Harry Varner lived a long, happy life and will be remembered by family, friends and students.

Born Sept. 20, 1909 on a farm in Frederick, Okla., Harry was one of eight children. Raised as a farmer, Harry loved sports and was selected to all-state teams in football, basketball and track in high school.

Harry’s natural athletic ability gave him a scholarship to Oklahoma University where he achieved fame as an all-around athlete, excelling in football, wrestling and water polo.

Harry once ran 97 yards on a punt return for a game-winning touchdown against foe Texas A&M.

After graduating with a BA in education, Harry took a bride, Stella, who was by his side for 64 years.

Harry and Stella moved to Arizona and settled in Phoenix with their three boys, Marshall, Carl and Harry Jr. Harry excelled as a teacher and was awarded teacher of the year. Later, inspired by his love of sports, Harry became an award-winning school football, track and basketball coach.

Summers off gave Harry time with his boys. Camping, hunting, fishing, working around the home and planting a bountiful vegetable garden complete with a scarecrow (to the delight of his grandchildren!) kept Harry busy.

But, part of the summer was spent returning to the family farm in Oklahoma where Harry taught his sons how to work by helping with the harvest, tending cattle and cultivating the land for future crops.

Tragedy struck in 1966 when Harry Jr. was killed in Vietnam.

But Harry and Stella were strong and had six grandchildren to continue the fishing trips with. When retirement came, Harry and Stella enjoyed an active social life, travel and square dancing with the Swinging Stars several times a week.

After Stella’s death in 1998, Harry lived happily with his son Marshall in Fountain Hills, traveling around the world and inspiring his family to live a good life as he had.

After returning from a 4,000-mile vacation to Oklahoma, Arkansas and Indiana, Harry died peacefully at his son’s residence in Fountain Hills.

Memorial service for Harry will be held at Messenger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd., Sunday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks residents to plant some of their own and think of Harry as they watch them grow.

Dorothy M. B. Marsh

District 28 State Representative Wes Marsh’s grandmother Dorothy Mae Bodin Marsh, 86, of Tallahassee, Fla. died Friday, Oct. 12 in Tallahassee.

The funeral service was at 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 15, at Tallahassee Memory Gardens.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to First Christian Church, 1319 High Road, Tallahassee, Fla. 32304.

David H. Hood

David Hiawatha Hood, 25, of Fort McDowell, Ariz. died Oct. 12 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Hospital.

Hood was born on March 30, 1976 in Chicago, Ill.

His father Gilbert Vargar of Chicago, daughter Ashley Hood of Williston, N.D. and sister Trina Hood of Fort McDowell survive him

Visitation was on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the family residence. The service was Oct. 17 at Fort McDowell Community Center. Interment will be at Fort McDowell cemetery.

Donald Ryan

Donald F. Ryan, 72, of Mesa died Oct. 14, 2001.

Born Dec. 13, 1928 in Owosso, Mich., he was a truck driver for many years in Michigan but retired to Fountain Hills and worked at the Village Pub, a family-owned and operated restaurant.

He is survived by his daughters, Diane Scribner (Peter) of Fountain Hills, Sue Blazekovich (Dick) of Fountain Hills and Danita Watts (Joe) of Battle Creek, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his son, Donald "Butch" Ryan.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at Green Acres Chapel of Light, 401 N. Hayden Rd., Scottsdale.

Paul Rice

Paul Michael Rice, 32, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 15, 2001.

Born July 16, 1969, Mr. Rice worked for Capitol Plumbing in Mesa.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Oct. 18, at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mass will be held the following day at the Catholic church.

Mr. Rice is survived by his wife, Carrie; their two children, Joshua and Brandon; loving parents, Ron and Betty; and brothers and sisters, Kim, Larry, Cheryl, Gary and Julie.

Erin Devine Waltzer

Erin Devine Waltzer, 21, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 17, 2001 in Scottsdale.

Born April 28, 1980 in Englewood, N.J., she was a student. Erin, with 21 years of kindness and beauty, was an aspiring photojournalist with the beauty and grace of a butterfly. She was a child, a sister, a lover and a best friend.

Survivors include her father, Harold Waltzer of Oklahoma City, Okla.; mother, Donna Devine of Fountain Hills; and a sister, Jessica Devine Waltzer of Fountain Hills.

Visitation was held Oct. 20 and 21 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, with a funeral mass at Church of the Ascension Oct. 22.

Ralph Johnson

Ralph Howard Johnson of Fountain Hills died Oct. 7, 2001.

He was born in St. Paul, Minn. and was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and a member of the Society of Engineers.

He retired from Ford Motor Co. as a marketing executive and resided in Birmingham, Mich.; served in the military, where he played trumpet in dance bands there and in high school and college.

In 1949 he married Viola Sarah McLaughlin. They have four children – Mark, Susan, Mitchell and Randall – and four grandchildren, Kelly, Christopher, Sawyer and Magnus.

Ralph was a loving husband and a devoted father, grandfather and father-in-law. He was a good friend and neighbor; a spoiler of dogs and cats.

A memorial service was held at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.

Devin Reed Lau

Devin Reed Lau, 30, of Scottsdale died Sunday, Oct. 21. He was born Dec. 6, 1970.

Mr. Lau moved to Fountain Hills with his family in 1982 and attended elementary school here and graduated from Coronado High School in 1989. He had been working in food services and was attending Scottsdale Community College.

Mr. Lau is survived by his parents, Richard and Dawn Lau of Fountain Hills; a brother, Douglas of Fountain Hills; and his grandparents, James and Shirley Johnston of Fountain Hills.

A memorial service for Mr. Lau will be held Thursday, Oct. 25, at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m.

Arrangements are being handled by Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

Heather Anne Intorf

Heather Anne Intorf of Fountain Hills died Oct. 26, 2001. She was 18-years-old.

Ms. Intorf was born on Jan. 15, 1983. She was a 2001 graduate of Fountain Hills High School and worked as a teller at Bank One in Scottsdale.

Her mother, Sharon E. Intorf and brother Dylan Intorf of Fountain Hills; her maternal grandparents Bernard and Joan Elias of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; her paternal grandparents Arnold and Dorothy Intorf of Tahoe, Calif; boyfriend Michael Candler of Fountain Hills; aunt Nancy Elias of Coatesville, Penn.; cousins Joshua and Elijah Heake of Coatesville, Penn.; aunt Joan Fox of Reno, Nev.; uncle David Intorf of Tahoe, Calif. and the Robert MacLeod family of Litchfield Park survive her.

Her father, Robert J. Intorf, preceded her in death in 1999.

The service will be Sunday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary located at 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd.

Contributions can be made to the Heather Anne Intorf Memorial Foundation Youth in Crisis, Acct. # 08582762 at any Bank One branch or to the Sharon Intorf Support Fund at Community Bank of Arizona, Acct. # 6461171008.
