Curtis A. Ewing

A memorial service was held Saturday morning at Ceres Christian Church for Curtis Antone Ewing, 44, of Ceres. He died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 at his home.

The McHenry Chapel of Franklin & Downs was in charge of arrangements.

Born March 1, 1959, Mr. Ewing was a native of Fremont and lived in Ceres for 12 years. He was an assemblyman for New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. for 10 years. Mr. Ewing was a member of Ceres Christian Church. He was an Army veteran and served from 1977-80.

He leaves behind his wife, Molly Ewing of Ceres; three children, Curtis Andrew Ewing, Christopher Anthony Ewing and Eric Michael Ewing, all of Manteca; his stepdaughter, Sarah Keenan of Ceres; his mother, Dorothy Brown of Milpitas; two brothers, Doug Ewing of Fremont and Billy Ewing of Brentwood; six sisters, Linda Kilgore of Livermore, Tina Powell of Turlock, Lynell Price of Tracy, Loretta Corcoran of Peoria, Ariz., Cindy Anderson of Tigard, Ore., and Lisa Saint George of San Jose; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas Lawrence Ewing, and one brother.

Remembrances may be sent to Ceres Christian Church, 3502 Roeding Road, Ceres, CA 95307.

Etta Newton

Etta Madeline Newton, 78, of Oakdale died Friday, Oct. 10 at Memorial Medical Center, Modesto.

A native of Miami, Okla., she had lived in Oakdale for 29 years. She was a Mobile Home Manager at River Paradise Mobile Estates, Oakdale for 17 years. She was a member of Women of the Moose of Tuolumme City. She enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, dancing and riding motorcycles. She also enjoyed watching car races either live or on television.

She is survived by her children, Walter B. Newton of Modesto, Christina J. Stancil of Oakdale and Linda J. Barrett of Ceres; brothers, John S. Collier of Stockton and Robert W. Collier of Hayward; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Franklin; brother James W. Collier; sister, Vivian W. Christy; and one grandchild.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at Village Chapel Freewill Baptist Church of Ceres.

Lakewood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jo Overdevest

Jo A. Overdevest, 81, died Monday, Aug. 4 at Bethany Home in Ripon.

Born in The Netherlands, she had lived in Escalon for 54 years and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, John Overdevest; and siblings, Wim Von Leuwen, Piet Von

Leuwen, Aly De Jong, Cock Van Ryn, Truus Men and Annie Zon, all of the Netherlands.

Rosary and services were held Friday, Aug. 8 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with burial following at St.

John's Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to Bethany Home - Ripon, 930 West Main St., Ripon, CA.

Deegan Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Romula Loya

A Mass was held Friday at St. Jude's Catholic Church for Romula Caraveo Loya, 87, of Modesto. She died Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at her home.

Burial was at St. Stanislaus Catholic cemetery under the direction of Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.

Born April 6, 1917, Mrs. Loya was a native of Chihuahua, Mexico, and had lived in Modesto since 1972. She was a homemaker and a seamstress. Mrs. Loya was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church in Ceres.

She leaves behind nine children, Sara Cueto, Rose Eva Arenas, Abel Loya, Luz Alba Gloria and Laura Martinez, all of Modesto, Elisa Sanchez and Aurora Olvera, both of El Paso, Texas, Candelaria Ayon of Earlimart and Elva Leticia Gutierrez of Delhi; and 39 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel O. Loya.

Bernardo Villapudua

Bernardo G. Villapudua, 67, of Ceres died Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at Oak Valley Hospital.

Mr. Villapudua was a native of Durango, Mexico. He lived in Ceres 20 years. He was a truck driver.

He is survived by his children, Bernardo B. Villapudua of Westminster, J. Antonio Villapudua of Murrieta, CA, J. Angel Villapudua of Holtville, CA, Manuela Villapudua of Fairfax, Virginia; sisters, Amparo Lopez of Waterford and Manuela Amavizca of Kerman, CA; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 30 at Oakdale Memorial Chapel, Oakdale. Burial will follow at Valley Home Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 29 at the chapel.

Edward Gowan

Edward B. Gowan, 76, of Escalon died Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center.

Born in Norman, Oklahoma, he had lived in Escalon for 33 years. He was a yard foreman.

He worked for American Lumber Company in Modesto for 25 years, was a member of Teamster's Retirees Group, the Ceres 50+ Club, and the Old Fishermen's Club. He was an almond grower and served in the U.S. Air Force, being a veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Gowan of Escalon; children, William Gowan and Keith Gowan, both of Modesto; brothers, B.M. (Mutt) Gowan of Ceres and Roy Gowan of Clear Lake; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Private services. No public visitation. Burial at Ceres Memorial Park.

Remembrances may be made to Memorial Hospital Foundation Heart Fund, 1329 Spanos Court, Suite C-2, Modesto, CA 95355.

Penny S. Pickens

A funeral service was held Monday at Allen Mortuary in Turlock for Penny Sue Collins Pickens, 53, of Hughson. She died Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at her home.

Burial was at Turlock Memorial Park.

Born March 5, 1951, Mrs. Pickens was a native of Turlock and was raised in Crows Landing. She had lived in Turlock for 33 years before moving to Hughson in 2001. Mrs. Pickens was a beautician for 32 years and had worked at Suzette's Beauty Salon in Turlock for 21 years. She graduated from Orestimba High School in 1969 and a beauty college in Modesto. Mrs. Pickens enjoyed arts and crafts.

She leaves behind her husband, E.Z. Pickens of Hughson; two stepsons, Mark Pickens of Turlock and Scott Pickens of Long Beach; her father, Kenneth Collins of Turlock; two brothers, Ken E. Collins and Glen Collins, both of Turlock; her sister, Winnie Sage of San Diego; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Collins.

Remembrances may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1604 Ford Ave., Suite 8, Modesto, CA 95350.

Diane Wamack

Diane Louise "DeeDee" Wamack, 40, of Oakdale died Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center.

A native of Tracy, she lived in Oakdale 38 years. She belonged to Shelter Cove Community Church.

She is survived by her parents, David and Lois Wamack of Oakdale; sisters, Karen Sanchez of Oakdale, Laurie Huffman of Modesto; one niece and one nephew. A funeral was held Monday, July 26 at Oakdale Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Valley Home Memorial Park.

Rheba M. Poland

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the San Joaquin Valley National cemetery in Santa Nella for Rheba Mae Coker Poland, 74, of Ceres. She died Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.

Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Born Sept. 26, 1929, Mrs. Poland was a native of Oklahoma and had lived in Ceres since 1938. She was a telephone operator for Pacific Bell for 25 years. Mrs. Poland was a former vice president of Telephone Pioneers. She belonged to Order of the Eastern Star and the Shriners Auxiliary.

Mrs. Poland leaves behind her son, Don A. Poland of Ceres; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Poland; and one sister.

Sherry I. Rorex

A funeral service was held Monday at Carpenter's House Church for Sherry Ilene Warren Rorex, 68, of Modesto. She died Friday, July 23, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center.

Private burial was at Turlock Memorial Park under the direction of Allen Mortuary.

Born May 25, 1936, Mrs. Rorex was a native of San Jose and had lived in Modesto since 1997. She also had lived in Pinecrest and Oregon. Mrs. Rorex worked at schools in San Jose and Modesto as a secretary and administrative assistant. She also worked for the San Jose Mercury News and Western States Plywood Mill in Oregon. She was secretary of Carpenter's House Church, a member of the Ceres Red Hat Society and a founding member of the Sixes Volunteer Fire Department in Sixes, Ore. Mrs. Rorex was a licensed private pilot.

She leaves behind two sons, Kenith Rorex of Springfield, Ore., and Allen Rorex of Turlock; her brother, Gordon Warren of Fremont, Neb.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ken Rorex; and one brother.

Remembrances may be sent to Legacy Circle of Emanuel Medical Center, 825 Delbon Ave., Turlock, CA 95382.

Richard N. Shackleford

A celebration of life was held Saturday at a Hughson home for Richard Newell "Dick" Shackleford, 75, of Modesto. He died Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Crestwood Manor.

Allen Mortuary was in charge of private burial.

Born Feb. 12, 1929, Mr. Shackleford was a native of San Jose. He operated Dick's Pump and Electric in Delhi for 21 years, and lived in Ceres and Snelling before moving to Modesto more than a year ago. Mr. Shackleford was an electrician for 22 years. He was active in Delhi community work, the Boy Scouts and the Evangelical Free Church. Mr. Shackleford collected trains and was a member of the Sacramento Railroad Museum. He served in the Navy in 1948-49.

He leaves behind his wife, Betty Shackleford of Ceres; three children, Lee Shackleford of Turlock, Laurel M. Paulson of Atwater and David R. Shackleford of Hughson; his brother, Edwin Shackleford of Pleasant Hill; and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Remembrances may be sent to the Alzheimer's Aid Society, 2501 McHenry Ave., Modesto, CA 95350-3259.
