Raymond Sturtevant

Raymond M. Sturtevant, 79, of Oakdale died Thursday, May 27 at Oak Valley Care Center.

A native of Durham, he lived in Oakdale for 15 years. He was an electrician for 43 years, last working for the State of California. He was a WWII Navy veteran. He belonged to the Oakdale Masonic Lodge #275 and was a past member and commander of American Legion Post #392, Sacramento.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Sturtevant of Oakdale; children, Cindy Lou Martin of Modesto and Robert C. Sturtevant of Redlands; sister, Inez Connelly of Sacramento; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Nelson Sturtevant.

Graveside service will be held on Friday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at Oakdale Citizens Cemetery. There is no visitation.

Nicolette H. Thornton

Allen Mortuary of Turlock was in charge of arrangements for Nicolette Heather Thornton, 37, of Hughson. She died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at her home.

Born Jan. 3, 1967, Mrs. Thornton was a native of Chicago, Ill., and lived in Felton from 1978 to 1985. She resided in Santa Cruz where she attended Cabrillo College. In 1988 Mrs. Thornton attended UCLA, then settled in various communities before moving to Ceres two years ago. Mrs. Thornton was proud of becoming a minister in the Universal Life Church. She loved her cats.

She leaves behind her father, Louise Thornton of Royal Oaks; her mother, Louise Loots of Watsonville; her grandparents, George and Virginia Thornton of Chicago; her brother, Jonathon Thornton of Watsonville; and her sister, Keira Pride of Gilroy.

Bertha Coburn

A service was held Saturday at Lakewood Funeral Home for Bertha Coburn, 97, of Hughson. He died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at Evergreen Rehabilitation Care Center in Modesto.

Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born Feb. 25, 1907, Mrs. Coburn was a native of Eldon, Mo., and lived in Hughson for 66 years. She was a Tri Valley Cannery floor supervisor 25 years. Mrs. Coburn was a member of Cannery Workers Local 746. She enjoyed gardening and home canning.

She leaves behind her caregivers, Edna "Tedi" Burris and Penny Lane, both of Modesto; and three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Zennie F. Coburn; and daughter, Marie Gonsalves.

Bertha E. Gansel

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Centenary United Methodist Church for Bertha Elizabeth Meier Gansel, 95, of Modesto. She died Saturday, May 29, 2004 at her home.

Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel is charge of burial at Acacia Memorial Park.

Born Aug. 8, 1908, Mrs. Gansel was a native of Hickman and lived in Modesto 60 years. She was a licensed vocational nurse for 25 years and a teacher in Hughson from 1930 to 1962. Mrs. Gansel was a Hughson High School graduate. She belonged to the Modesto Police Auxiliary, Centenary United Methodist Church and was a lifetime member of the Nursing Association. Mrs. Gansel had a lifetime teaching degree. She enjoyed raising cows.

She leaves behind two sons, James E. Gansel of Modesto and Robert L. Gansel of Hickman; her stepson, William B. Gansel of Cameron Park; her sister, Evelyn McClurg of Modesto; and eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dorothy Jeanne Gansel; stepson, Jack Gansel; and one brother.

Remembrances may be sent to the Centenary United Methodist Church.

Margaret M. Balcita

Data Processor

Margaret M. Balcita, 69, died Friday, June 4, 2004 in Stockton at Beverly Manor Care home. She was born in San Francisco on June 18, 1934. She was resident of Stockton for 5 years, previously lived in Manteca for 4 years.

Margaret is survived by her children, Bruce Balcita of Oregon, Manny Balcita and David Balcita of Washington, Don Balcita of Escalon, Paul Balcita and Janette Balcita of Manteca, Margie Balcita of Indiana; 22 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her son, the late Jerry Balcita, who passed away in 1981.

Margaret was a data processor for 12 years for Blue Cross Insurance in Oakland. She was an athletic woman who enjoyed all sports. She enjoyed reading and writing. Margaret loved to camp with her family and experience the outdoors; she was a strong and feisty mother who will be deeply missed.

Deegan Funeral Chapel of Escalon is in charge of funeral arrangements. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 9, 2004, 1 to 5 p.m. Funeral Service will be Thursday, June 10, at 1 p.m. at Deegan Funeral Chapel, 1441 San Joaquin Street, Escalon.

Virginia Gentry

Virginia Lee Gentry, 70, died Wednesday, May 26 in Modesto.

A native of Bowlegs, Okla., she resided in Oakdale for 47 years. She was a retired telephone operator. She enjoyed crafts and gardening.

She is survived by her daughters, Suzan Haley of Oakdale and Kathryn Gregory of Waterford; brothers, Jack McCants of Mariposa and Lester McCants of Colorado Springs, Colo; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Allen Gentry.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 2 at 3 p.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church in Waterford.

Remembrances may be sent to the donor's favorite charity.

Betty J. Welch

A graveside service was held Tuesday afternoon at Lakewood Memorial Park for Betty Jean Ford Welch, 80, of Ceres. She died of natural causes on Thursday, April 22, 2004 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

The Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs was in charge of arrangements.

Born Aug. 10, 1923, Mrs. Welch was a native of Minot, N.D., and lived in Ceres for 50 years. She was a bookkeeper for 25 years at American Pipe and Steel, retiring from Superior Fruit Ranch. Mrs. Welch was a Modesto Junior College graduate. She enjoyed gardening and reading.

Mrs. Welch leaves behind three children, Thomas R. Welch and Terry A. Perry, both of Modesto, and Tonna Gomez of Union City; two brothers, Neal Ford of Bella Vista, Ark., and Ted Ford of Omak, Wash.; and eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jean T. Welch; daughter, Linda Hammond; and one grandchild.

Remembrances may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1604 Ford Ave., Modesto, CA 95350.

Meagan M. Vengris

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today at Ceres Memorial Park for Meagan Marie Vengris, 15, of Newman. She died Thursday, April 22, 2004 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Gustine.

Eaton Family Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born Dec. 12, 1988, Miss Vengris was a native of Modesto and lived in Newman for a year. She was an eighth-grade student at Gustine Middle School. Meagan enjoyed drawing and music.

She leaves behind her parents, Dawn and Michael Langley of Newman; her brother, Michael Timothy Thomas Langley of Newman; and her grandparents, Thomas and Suzanne Vengris of Ceres and Eric and Jan Westerhoff of Riverbank.

Remembrances may be sent to Meagan Vengris Trust Fund, c/o Washington Mutual Bank or Food Processors Credit Union.

Robert F. Silva

A memorial Mass was held Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hughson for former Hughson Fire Chief Robert "Bob" Francis Silva, 75, of Tulare. He died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Kaweah-Delta Hospital in Visalia.

Inurnment is pending at San Joaquin Valley National cemetery in Santa Nella. The Goble-Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born Jan. 22, 1929, Mr. Silva was a native of Hughson and lived in Tulare for a month. He previously lived in Oregon for 11 years and Hughson for 64 years. He was an Army veteran and served from 1953-55. Mr. Silva was a mechanic at Martella's Automotive in Hughson for 25 years and the Hughson fire chief for 29 years, and was a certified training officer. He belonged to St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hughson, Korean War Veterans, California Fire Chief's Association, California State Firemen's Association and the Stanislaus County Association of Firemen. Mr. Silva enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He leaves behind his wife, June Silva of Tulare; four children, Pamela Michael of Ceres, Kevin Silva and Lori Aguilar, both of Tulare, and Tom Silva of Branson, Mo.; two sisters, Marian Mello of Turlock and Jeanette Vierra of Hughson; and 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Remembrances may be sent to the Hughson Fire Department, P.O. Box 37, Hughson, CA 95326.

Bruce Robb

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 8 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Danville for Bruce "Joker" Robb, 61, of Ceres. He died of a heart attack on Sunday, April 11, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Cunningham's Affordable Burial & Cremation Service was in charge of arrangements.

Born March 14, 1943, Mr. Robb was a native of Tulsa, Okla., and lived in Ceres for five years. He previously lived in Fremont for 30 years and Arizona for two years. He was a truck driver for Fleming Foods. Mr. Robb attended the University of Arizona, and enjoyed riding motorcycles. He was a Navy veteran, serving in the 1960s.

Mr. Robb leaves behind his wife Leona Robb of Ceres; two stepchildren, Sean Johnson and Eric Johnson, both of Modesto; and his sister, Sue Schmidt of Kensington, Md.

Olivia J. Woolsey

A funeral was held Monday afternoon at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel for Olivia Joyce Jenkins Woolsey, 81, of South Modesto. She died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at Riverbank Nursing Center.

Burial was at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Oakdale.

Born Nov. 23, 1922, Mrs. Woolsey was a native of Maysville, Okla., and had lived in South Modesto since 1968. She previously lived in Oakdale for seven years. Mrs. Woolsey was a homemaker and a member of Gospel Tabernacle of Ceres. She volunteered at the food bank and enjoyed church work and reading the Bible.

She leaves behind five children, Jerry Woolsey and Kathy Osborne, both of Oakdale, Jimmy D. Woolsey of Modesto, Alvin Woolsey of Post Falls, Idaho, and Karen Sue Woolsey of Stockton; her brother, Jim Jenkins of Oakdale; and 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Lee Woolsey; children Anthony Woolsey, Gerald Woolsey, John R. Woolsey, Mary Leota Woolsey and Marcella Ann Woolsey; and two brothers.

Remembrances may be sent to Community Hospice, 601 McHenry Ave., Modesto, CA 95350.
