Janet Marie Espinola Pessagno, 60, of Salinas passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was born November 24, 1955 in Santa Clara to George and Alice Espinola.
Janet was a skilled professor, active community member, and, most important, a loving mother, daughter, sibling, and friend. She was an English professor at Hartnell College for almost 30 years, teaching thousands of local students and receiving, among numerous other awards, the 2007 Ercia Harden Teaching Excellence Award, an honor recognizing top instructors in Monterey County. She also served as a Senator on Hartnell's Academic Senate, an active member of the Basic Skills Initiative Committee, an advisor to the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Program, and an avid contributor to the school through Federal Title 5 Grant work.
In addition to being a talented English grammarian and linguist, she was fluent in Portuguese and Spanish and spent two years in Spain. She loved to cook—always interested in new recipes from the Food Network channel—and she loved even more the sights, sounds, and smells of family and friends gathering for a meal. Her four sons were her center. She volunteered tirelessly for her sons' school activities, Catechism classes, and Boy Scouts outings; she covered hundreds of their essays and articles in "red ink, " with a careful eye for the most minute detail and endless patience to explain the corrections; and, as the only woman of the house, she cooked for, cleaned, and supported a household of six. She was a proud "Portagee" and "Minha" to many. She loved to dance to Gloria Estefan and listen to Johnny Mathis, and she knew how to make even the simplest lunch sandwiches taste delicious.
Janet graduated from San Jose State University in 1979 with a B.A. in Spanish (Language Arts and Literature) and a minor in Linguistics, studying abroad at the University of Madrid from 1977 to 1978. She graduated from San Jose State University in 1980 with a Master of Arts in Linguistics and an emphasis on Teaching English. Almost 20 years later, while raising four sons and commuting from Salinas, she obtained a Master of Arts Certificate in English Composition from San Francisco State University in 1998. In her early career after school, she taught at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose and taught ESL students in Santa Clara County schools.
Janet is survived by her four sons, Anthony, Stephen, Robert, and John; her mother, Alice; her brothers, Doug, John, and Steve; and her sister, Joanne. She is preceded in death by her father, George (Sr.); her brother, George (Jr.); and the father of her sons, Steve.

Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 10, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, CA 93901.
Funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, December 11 at the Sacred Heart Parish, 22 Stone Street, Salinas, CA 93901,
With a reception to follow at the parish's hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janet's name to the Hartnell College Foundation, 411 Central Avenue Salinas, CA 93901, or to the donor's favorite charity.
