THOM OPDENAKER
A celebration of life service will be held for Thomas "Thom" Ronald Opdendaker, 54, of Palermo 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 5th at the V.F.W. Hall at Lincoln & Elgin in Oroville. He died Saturday, September 21, 2002 at a Chico hospital.
Thom was born December 13, 1947 in Chester,  Pennsylvania to Evelyn and Thomas Opdenaker. He came to California in 1963 and graduated from high school in Lakeside,  Calif. During the Vietnam War he served in the U.S. Army. Following the service he attended college in San Diego. Thom was employed by the Los Angeles Housing Authority and later worked in law enforcement in San Diego. While in Southern California he was active in the Sweet Tooth Theatre in El Cajon.
In 1997 he moved to Palermo and worked as an intake social worker for Butte County Department of Social Services. Thom was an actor and writer. He served on the board of directors for the Birdcage Theatre and Community Radio KRBS.
His sister, Doris Laughlin of Palermo and a brother, Gary Opdenaker of Downing, survive him.
Thom's ashes will be buried near his parents at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego. Memorial contributions may be made to KRBS Radio or to the Birdcage Theatre in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.

MARIAN WALKER
Marian Walker, 81, a Paradise resident until recently, died Friday, September 27, 2002, in Santa Rosa.
She was born February 4, 1921 in Martinez, Calif, and had been a Ridge resident for many years.
She was married to her late husband, Dallas, March 11, 1945. He died in 1993.
Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Janet, a son, Tom, all of Santa Rosa, and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was a retired LVN, and had affiliations with Eastern Star and other Masonic groups, and the VFW.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Paradise for just over 20 years, where she expressed her talent with crafts, helped decorate for many social events, baked wonderful cookies, and loved to send cards to many in the church family.
There will be a brief Moment of Remembrance at 12:15 p.m., Sunday, October 6, 2002 at the First Christian Church, 5738 Pentz Road (at Pearson), Paradise. All of her friends are welcome.
Memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church.

FRANKLIN M. GARCIA, Sr.
A Memorial Service for former Chico resident, Franklin Mario Garcia, Sr., 79, will be held this Friday, November 1, 2002 at 1 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church. There will also be a Rosary said for him at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Saturday, November 2nd at 11 a.m. Private inurnment will take place at a later time and date. He died peacefully in the company of three of his children on October 22, 2002 at his residence in Sacramento.
Franklin was born February 27, 1923 on the island of Oahu, Hawaii to Frank C. Garcia and Cedalia Vivieros Garcia. He moved with his family to California as a small child and grew up in the town of Newman in the San Joaquin Valley. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was among those who hit the beaches of Normandy on D-Day in June of 1944.
In spite of the fact that he never finished high school, he held three higher education degrees: a B.A. from California State University, San Francisco, a Master's Degree in Psychology from University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, and a Doctorate in Jurisprudence from Hastings College of Law, University of California in San Francisco. He was both an attorney and a college and law school professor.
He taught at CSU, Chico in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was Chair of the Department of Social Welfare and Corrections, and also Director of the Upward Bound program. At the time of his retirement he was a Deputy County Counsel in Sacramento County.
As his "retirement project" he designed and built a home on the west side of Lake Tahoe - the place he loved best on earth.
He is survived by his five children, Sherryl Garcia Braak (and beloved son-in-law Richard), Franklin M. Garcia, Jr. (known as "Rocky," and wife Sheri), Victoria Norman, Michelle Garcia, and Michael Garcia. He was very proud of his grandchildren, Franklin M. Garcia, III (known as "Little Rock"), Daniel Norman, James Mabry, Elizabeth Mabry and Gregory Graham. He also leaves behind his former wife and forever love, Stephanie Doran.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 2341 Floral Avenue, Chico, CA 95926; or the Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation, P.O. Box 5364, Incline Village, Nev., 89450; or to The American Cancer Society. Arrangements are being made with the family through St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, 894-1971.
