Mary E. Nunes
Mary E. Nunes died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at her home in Hollister. She was 89.
Mrs. Nunes was born in Hanford and attended San Jose schools. She had lived in Hanford and Lemoore and left Hanford in 1944, but continued to visit family and friends there. She was a homemaker for 74 years and enjoyed cooking and hosting family gatherings and was always willing to take friends on their errands. Her family said she was a good listener to whom people of all ages would go for advice, particularly her grandchildren.
Nunes was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hollister, SPRSI, the Luso American Association and a Franciscan Sisters Associate, and belonged to the Sacred Heart Church prayer group, which visited people in their homes.
She is survived by her children and their spouses Carl S. and Barbara Nunes of Hollister and Lionel F. Nunes and Araceli Mendez of Morgan Hill; grandchildren Steve (Debra) Nunes of Morgan Hill, Cynthia (Chip) Carin of Morgan Hill, Josue and Juan Mendez of Morgan Hill, Craig (Connie) Nunes of Mountain View, Vicky Nunes of Los Gatos, Deborah Nunes of Hollister, Benjamin Nunes of Oklahoma and Callie Nunes of Oklahoma; great-grandchildren Ryan, Alex, Maison, Miranda, Candice, Melissa and Mary Nunes; Christopher, Jonathan and Erica Carin; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Nunes was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Nunes, in 1976, and her granddaughter, Susan Nunes.
Visitation will be Wednesday after 9 a.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home in Hollister. The Rosary will be recited Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services are Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home, proceeding to Sacred Heart Church for a Mass at 10 a.m. Graveside services will follow at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery
in Santa Clara. Memorials are preferred to Hospice, or spiritual bouquets (masses) are preferred.
Patricia P. Young
Patricia P. Young died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004. She was 60 years old.
Pat was born in Pasadena, Calif., to Howard and Lois Powley on Dec. 4, 1943. She graduated from Pasadena High and moved to San Jose in 1968. She and her husband moved the family to Morgan Hill in 1983. She retired from Lockheed Missile & Space Co. in Sunnyvale after 25 years.
After doting on her family and sharing her beautifully artistic and creative talents with her grandchildren, and traveling to their condos in Hawaii or Tahoe with her husband, Pat was most fulfilled by her many projects and volunteer opportunities which included being a member of the Coyote Grange for 21 years, organizing the Pomona Grange strawberry shortcake booth at the SCC Fair for many years, being a kindergarten teacher’s helper at Burnett Elementary School and serving as a one-time home and school club president there. She also had fun as a campaign volunteer for the Kennedy Mayoral campaign.
In the last couple of years she helped as hostess then coordinator for PeopleLink Japanese Student Exchange Program which delighted her, and in turn brought joy to her family. She spent so many hours devoted to her beautiful and expansive gardens and tractor-mowing weeds, as well as many more hours cross-stitching her love into many family baby quilts, which won ribbons at the SCC Fair. Pat’s pride was also in hosting many weddings beneath the canopy of willows at her home. Her heart touched so many and was mom to so many more. Pat was always on the go, never a weed to grow beneath her feet. She was very loved and will be deeply missed.
The beloved wife of Robert E. Young for 30 years. Loving mother to Lisa Aragon and husband John of San Jose/Morgan Hill; Kendall Young and wife Stephanie of Sammamish, Wash.; Ann Berry of Morgan Hill; and Wendy Wootton and husband Tod of Santa Clara. Loving Grammy to five grandchildren, Joey Aragon, Starlyn and McKenna Berry; and Collin Young and Krista Wootton. Nurturing aunt to Patti Koeller and husband Brandon of Washington, and Staci Cetina and husband Jason of Washington. Loving cousin to Diane Griffith of Virginia and Stacey Griffith of South California.
A celebration in honor of Pat’s life takes place under the willows at the family home in Morgan Hill. Date is still to be determined. Contact family for details or the funeral home at 408-779-8456. Arrangements handled by Johnson Funeral Home.
Ray S. Kumagai
Ray S. Kumagai died Sept. 28, 2004, in Morgan Hill. He was 98.
He was born in Fukuoka, Japan, on Dec. 24, 1905.
Ray is survived by his children James Kumagai of Huntington Beach, Robert Kumagai of Morgan Hill and Arlene Tully of Fremont; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his sister Tamaye Tabe.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sumiki Kumagai; and three brothers.
Services take place at 7pm on Thursday, Oct. 7, at Morgan Hill Buddhist Community Center, 16450 Murphy Ave.
Arrangements were handled by Johnson Funeral Home.
William Duane Dunworth
William Duane Dunworth, born March 1, 1960, died unexpectedly from natural causes in September. He was a truck driver.
He is survived by his son Cody of Placerville; mother Avis of Sunnyvale; brother Don and his wife, and his special sister-in-law Lisa. He will be missed by several aunts, uncles, cousins and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jay Dunworth.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
Paul G. McKnight
Paul G. McKnight died Sept. 19, 2004, at the age of 70.
Paul was born on March 3, 1934 in Chicago, Ill. He was a faithful patron of Starbucks and always had a joke to tell to strangers. He will be dearly missed.
He was the caring husband of Janet for 45 years; loving dad to Scott (Linda) and Sue (Mark); dear Grampa of Lindsay, Jennifer, Jodie and Brayton; and dear brother of Donna and Barbara.
Graveside services were Sept. 13 at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, in Gilroy under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.
Jeannette Silva
Jeannette Silva died Sept. 21, 2004, in Gilroy. She was 88.
Jeannette was born in Gilroy in 1916 and has been a Gilroy resident her entire life. She was a school bus driver from 1962-72.
Mrs. Silva is survived by her daughter Margaret Badgley of Reno, Nev.; granddaughter Beckie Rivera of San Jose; great-granddaughters Krystle, Kimberly and Kristy Rivera of San Jose; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Silva Jr., and by her brother and two sisters.
Funeral Mass was Sept. 25 at St. Mary’s Church. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gilroy, under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.
Joe M. Bettencourt
Joe M. Bettencourt died Sept. 26, 2004 in Gilroy following a short illness. He was 84.
Mr. Bettencourt moved to Gilroy in 1966 from Sunnyvale. He owned and operated Bettencourt Dairy on Pacheco Pass for 45 years with his brother Louie. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Gilroy, I.F.D.E.S. Hall of Gilroy. He enjoyed antique clocks and his gardening.
Loving husband of 51 years to Emily V. Bettencourt of Gilroy. Father of Larry Bettencourt and his wife Bonnie of Soledad and John Bettencourt and his wife Saldrrena of Chowchilla, Calif. Grandfather of Scott, Larry Jr., Eric, Rebecca, Brian, Christina, John II and Chalena. Great-grandfather of eight. Brother of John Bettencourt of Sunnyvale and his late wife Evelyn, Tony Bettencourt of Hollister, Frank Bettencourt and his wife Evelyn of Vernalis, Calif., Manuel Bettencourt and his wife Dolores of Gilroy, Eddie Bettencourt and his wife Alma of Vernalis, Mary Escobar and her husband Art of Gilroy, Louie Bettencourt and his wife, Mary of Gilroy, and the late Filbert Bettencourt. Godfather of Apple Fierro of Gilroy. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceded in death by his parents John and Rose Bettencourt.
Visitation was Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. Vigil and Mass followed at St. Mary’s Church, Gilroy. Committal Services took place Thursday, Sept. 30, at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Family would appreciate donations to the American Cancer Society.
