Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Monday at Hamilton Peers Lorentzen Funeral Chapel, Tulare. Wake service will be 6 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Interment will be at Tulare District Cemetery.
James E. 'Gene' Walker
Rancher
EXETER -- James E. Gene Walker, 59, of Exeter died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001. He was a rancher.
Gene was the son of Ranse and Hattie Walker. He was born on Sept. 19, 1941, in Exeter where he was raised and educated. He was a member of the Future Farmers of America at Exeter Union High School, where he graduated in 1960. He was a rancher in the Exeter area for most of his adult life.
One of the most precious things in life to him was his family who he loved dearly and loved to spend time with. He was a loving son, father, devoted grandfather and faithful friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Gene is survived by his loving family: His mother, Hattie Walker of Exeter; three children and their families, Cathy and Kyle Heck and their children, Casey and Kyle Keaton, Michelle Walker and son, Mike Saldivar, Brian Walker and daughters, Ashley and Leah; he is also survived by four sisters, Carolyn Hood of Exeter, Barbara Wilson of Porterville, Nadine Tanner of Visalia and Annette Whitney of Exeter; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Evans-Miller Exeter Chapel. There will be no services per Gene's request.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

TULARE -- Phyllis Jean Garland, 78, of Tulare died Monday, July 23, 2001. She was a homemaker.
Viola Martha Forester
Bookkeeper
Viola Martha Forester, 89, of Visalia, formerly of Porterville died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, of Alzheimer's. She was a bookkeeper.
She loved trips to the Giant Sequoias for picnics with her family. Family gatherings were her favorite thing to do, she was a great cook and fed all well. She shared her love of Jesus with everyone and now she joins him in heaven.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; her parents, Burl and Laura Morgan; and four sisters.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis and wife, Doreen Forester of Visalia and Robert Forester of Inola, Okla.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Visalia District Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hadley Funeral Chapel, Visalia.

Irene Turner, 88, of Visalia, formerly of Porterville died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001. She was a retired dietary supervisor at Sierra View District Hospital in Porterville.

Jewel Bell, 94, of Visalia died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001. She was a nurses'aide.

UPLAND -- Arie T. Verkaik, 81, of Upland, formerly of Visalia, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001. He was a retired dairyman.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Draper Mortuary, Ontario. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Lincoln Avenue Community church, Pomona. Private interment will be in Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lincoln Avenue Community Church Building Fund, 1469 Lincoln Ave., Pomona, CA 91767 or to the Salem Christian Home, 1056 E. Philadelphia Ave., Ontario, CA 91764.
Claris Tenpenny
Claris Tenpenny, 87, of Visalia died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001.
Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today at Hadley Funeral Chapel, Visalia. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smith Mountain Cemetery, Dinuba.
Fred Grijalva
General maintenance
Fred Grijalva, 43, of Visalia died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001. He was in general maintenance.
Fred Grijalva was born on March 31, 1958, to Ralph and Lupe Grijalva. He grew up in Visalia where he attended George McCann School, and graduated from Redwood High School in 1977. In school, he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. Fred served in the U.S. Army stationed with the Infantry at Ft. Lewis, Wash. He worked for a number of years in general maintenance before disabled. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Survivors include sons, Jeremy Grijalva and Freddy Grijalva Jr., both of Visalia, Christopher and Andrew Grijalva of Santa Maria; a daughter, Kimberly Grijalva of Visalia; sisters, Sally and husband, Mario Rios of Woodlake, Evelyn Renteria and companion, David Ramirez of Tulare, Frances and husband, Juan Herrera of Visalia, Ella and husband, Rosendo Juarez of Visalia; brothers, Rudy Grijalva of Visalia, Johnny, Albert and Louie Grijalva of Bakersfield; numerous nieces and nephews from Visalia and Bakersfield.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Services, Visalia. A combination rosary and Mass service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Visalia. Interment will be private.
Lettie H. Burkdoll

Born in Meridianville, Alabama on July 17, 1917 to Franklin and Edna Hampton she passed away in a Visalia Convalescent Hospital on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at the age of 84 years.
She was raised in Alabama coming to the Exeter area in 1928. She married Louis Burkdoll and he passed away on Oct. 6, 1986. She had worked in retail sales in the Lindsay, Exeter area for many years last working at Coast-to-Coast Hardware in Exeter.
Survivors include two grandsons, Brian Hampton of Walnut Creek and Christopher Hampton of Hong Kong; one sister, Helen Lamunyon of Fresno; two great-grandchildren; loving niece, Frances Hovis of Exeter.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smith Family Chapel, Exeter with private burial in the Exeter District Cemetery.
