Anne Rae (Stewart) Barber, 91, of Hayward, Calif., died on Friday, May 30, 2003. Known always as Anne to her friends, her family lovingly called her "Tootie." Born to Gladys Tennie (Perkins) Stewart and John Riley Stewart at the 700-acre family ranch on Gold Run Creek in Susanville. She was the first born daughter of 10 children. Susanville, the gravestone states "Great-granddaughter of Edward Jenner, the inventor of the small pox vaccine." She grew-up on Gold Run and in logging camps of her father's trade and was educated through the eighth grade in the town's one room schoolhouse. Championing many jobs throughout her life, she proudly held the position of manager for Sovereign Square Apartments on Via Arriba in San Lorenzo, Calif. for nearly 20 years, before retiring to Modesto at age 80.
Lee R. Northcutt, 86, died on June 8, 2003, at the Regent Care Center in Reno. He was born on Jan. 15, 1917, in Elliott, Texas. He grew up in Kenific, Okla. and attended South Eastern and Murrary Agricultural Colleges. He joined the U.S. Army in 1940 and retired after 20 dedicated years, having served in World War II (North Africa and Italy) and in the Korean conflict. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He worked as a civilian for 13 years at Sierra Army Depot in Herlong, as an electronics technician. Northcutt's interest and love of ham radio began in 1957 and he was affiliated with MARS. He and his wife, Iola moved from Herlong to Reno in 1981. He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Frankie M. Northcutt and sister, Melba Moore. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 61 years, Iola Belle Fry; brothers, Richard and John Northcutt of Durant and Mead, Okla.; children, Pam Draper and Lenne (Paul) Hollinger of Reno, Ron (Cherise) Northcutt of Elk Grove, Calif. and Roy (Cheryl) Northcutt of Barnet, Vt. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation was held on Friday, June 13 at Walton's Sierra Chapel, 875 W. Second Street. Kenneth Allen Weaver, 61, died at his residence in Standish on June 25, 2003. He was born in Wilkinsburg, Penn., on Jan 14, 1942 and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 36 years. He loved to bask in the outdoors at any time of the year. He is survived by his mother, Virginia of Standish and numerous uncles and aunts, as well as many cousins. There are no services planned at this time. The family will have burial at Diamond Crest cemetery at a later date.
James Anderson Walker, 87, died at Mayer's Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills on June 21, 2003. He was born in Westwood on May 18, 1916 and was a Lassen County resident his entire life, moving from Westwood to Susanville in 1920. He graduated from Lassen High School in 1934, and Lassen Junior College in 1936. He had also attended classes at U.C. Berkeley. On Jan. 4, 1942, he married Ruth Elizabeth Land. He was the owner of the Walker Drive-In Frosty (1951) which later became Walker's Coffee Shop (1958). He had also been a meat-cutter for Safeway stores in Susanville and Fallon, as well as Travis Miles Meat. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Lassen-Janesville Masonic Lodge #149, the B.P.O.E. #1487 and the Lassen County Ben Ali Shriner's Club. He served as exalted ruler for the elks in 1972 and as president of the Shriner's Club in 1975. He is survived by his wife of over 61 years, Ruth Walker of Susanville; son, Kenneth J. Walker of Susanville; daughters, Nancy Jeannet York of Lander, Wyo. and Barbara Hardy of Yreka, Calif. Also surviving are four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at the Masonic Lodge in Susanville on Thursday, June 26, 2003, at 11 a.m. The family requests that any donations be made in his memory to the Shriner's Children's Hospital.
David R. Joseph, 51, died at his home in Cody, Wyo., on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on June 25, 1952, in Loyalton to Homer and Irene Joseph. Shortly after birth, the Joseph family relocated to Taylorsville where David and his four brothers were raised. After graduating from Greenville High School in 1970, he moved to Quincy where he attended Feather River College. Following college he began a career in the logging industry falling timber in Plumas County during the 1970s and through most of the 1980s. Most notably, he worked for McElroy Brothers Logging in Quincy before venturing on his own with D&J Falling Contractors. From 1988-94 he worked for Feather Publishing Company and Feather River Disposal. In 1994, he relocated his family to Cody where he worked for West States Construction and later Park County as a heavy equipment operator. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt and play golf. He was also an accomplished athlete while in high school and later when he played in adult basketball and softball leagues. He also enjoyed a good game of cribbage, winning the World Championship's 'doubles' title in 1994. As a member of the Sierra Valley Riding and Roping Club, David won several silver buckles in team roping and steer stopping events, including the team roping contest at the annual Taylorsville Fourth of July Rodeo. He was a member of the California Loggers Association, Las Plumas Del Oro Chapter of E Clampus Vitus and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Janet "Jan" Joseph of Cody; son, Ryan of Cody; stepson, Tony Barnes of Laramie, Wyo.; mother, Irene Joseph of Susanville; brothers, Darel of Taylorsville; his twin brother Dennis of Gardnerville, Nv.; Don of Quincy and Dale of Susanville; grandmother, Agnes, of San Filepe, Baja, Mexico; five aunts and two uncles and 11 nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Riverside Cemetery
in Cody followed by a luncheon reception at the Cody Club Room. The family has requested that any donations made in his memory be sent to the Joseph Family, 1425 Wyoming Ave., Cody, WY 82414 and they will distribute them to Hope Lodge, Spirit Mountain Hospice and his other care providers.
Estella Belle Hall, 80, died at her residence in Susanville on Nov. 4, 2003. She was born in Crawford County, Ark. on Oct. 6, 1923 and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 56 years. She enjoyed playing bingo, collecting antiques and spending time with her family. In addition to being a loving wife, mother and homemaker, she had also been co-owner of Hall's Saw Shop from 1957-1972. She is survived by her son, Larry C. Hall of Susanville; brothers, Thomas Jenkins of Redding, Norman Jenkins of Oak Ridge, Ore. and Huey Jenkins of Witchita, Kan. and sisters, Alma Spencer of Springdale, Ariz. and Louis Ray of Chico. Also surviving are two grandchildren. Private burial will be held at Diamond Crest Cemetery, next to her husband, L.C. Hall.
Virginia Nye, 82, died on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at her daughter's home in Doyle. She stubbornly battled Parkinson's disease to the end. She was born on June 24, 1921, in Lincoln, Neb. and lived most of her youth in Minneapolis, Minn. She lived with her mother, Ione Johnson, in Missoula, Mont. for two years while her father, Ralph, explored for gold in Alaska. She graduated from Missoula High School in 1939. After marrying Floyd in 1947, they moved to California in 1954, then on to Reno in 1962, where she became involved with horses and trail riding. Her love for animals was exceeded only by her love for and devotion to her children. She was a sergeant in the Woman's Army Crops during World War II, graduated from the Minneapolis School of Business in 1947 and later worked for 12 years at Washoe Medical Center. She is survived by her former, husband of 25 years, Floyd; brother, Paul Johnson of Campbell, Calif.; daughters, Cathy and husband, Ron Fairbanks of Carson City, Peggy and husband, Butch Renovisch of Las Vegas, Barbara and husband, Raymond Knox of Doyle and Terri and husband, Ed Mengihi of Washoe Valley; son, Tom and his wife, Mary Ellen Nye of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Walton's in Reno. James Francis Riddell, 91, died at the Canyonwood Rehabilitation Center in Redding on Oct. 29, 2003. James was born in Ellensburg, Wash., on July 12, 1912, and had been a longtime resident of Lassen County. Memorial services will be held at Walton's Colonial Mortuary Chapel in Susanville on Saturday, Nov. 15, at noon.
Aida Beatrice "Eddy" Harding age 83 peacefully passed away with her husband at her side Thursday afternoon June 19, 2003 at her residence located in Clear Creek, CA. Born on Sept. 7, 1919 to European immigrants George and Ellen Scarborough Marziano in Ontario, Canada, she and her family became naturalized citizens on Nov. 13, 1942. Harding had been a resident of Lassen County for over fifty years residing in Clear Creek for the past 30 years. Harding had served the movie industry as a hair stylist during the late 30s and early 40s working on numerous movie sets and becoming acquainted with the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin to name just a few. Following her first marriage she opened an antiques store in the Los Angeles area. While residing in Solvang she became very active with the PTA and helped organize many of their fund raising events. She later went to work for the U.S. Forest Service through their Senior Employment Program starting with the San Bernardino National Forest and later going to work for the Lassen National Forest. Harding kept her love for antiques alive by continuing to restore and collect antique furniture while also enjoying all types of crafts. Harding is survived by her caring and loving husband whom she married in Reno, September 7, 1983, Mike of Clear Creek; son, Bruce Stelzer of Susanville; daughter, Lue Ellen Merchant of Fruit Heights, Utah; five grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy a private family celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Forest Vernon Smith, 86, died at Banner-Lassen Medical Center on Tuesday, June 24, 2003. He was born in Roosevelt, Utah, on June 16, 1917 and was raised in the Utah Valley, where he graduated from high school. He moved to Susanville in 1937 and worked for various grocery stores and worked for Hills Red and White Market for 32 years. He also worked for Citizens Utilities as a warehouseman for 10 years, retiring in 1982. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines. He was also a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. in Susanville. Smith spent many years working with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a scoutmaster. He also served on the Nevada Area Council and was a recipient of the Silver Pinecone and Silver Beaver awards. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his wife served a six-month mission for the church in Tulsa, Okla. Mission, serving in Stillwell, Okla. He loved to garden and share his produce with family and neighbors. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elaine Smith of Susanville; daughter, Patricia Moore of Susanville; sons, Forrest Paul Smith of Pleasant Grove, Utah and Tom Smith of Susanville; brothers, Lewis Smith of Lehi, Utah and Carl Smith of Orem, Utah; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services were held on Monday, June 30 at the Diamond Crest Cemetery
veterans' section. A visitation was held on Sunday, June 29 at the Walton's Colonial Mortuary. The family requests that remembrances may be made to a favorite charity.
Benjamin Ward-Covert Garrison died at birth on June 19, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center. He is survived by parents, Mike and Heather Garrison; brothers, Brian, Brendan and twin brother Bradley of Susanville; grandparents, Joe and Susan Covert of Paradise and Phil and Brenda Garrison of Longmont, Colo. and great-grandparents, Al and Kelly Covert of Paradise. His Mass was held on June 30, with burial at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
Gary Allen Bellmer, 47, of Chilcoot, died in Loyalton on July 24, 2002. Gary was born in Alameda on Nov. 7, 1954 to Paul and LaVonnia Farr Bellmer. He had been a resident of Plumas County for the past 20 years, was a carpenter, and most recently worked for B&C Construction. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. He also enjoyed woodworking. Gary is survived by his parents of Hayward; brothers, Wayne, Richard and Ronald; sisters, Connie, Nancy, Cindy and Paulette; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral was held on July 28, followed by cremation and private inurnment.
Rene Cavaille, 79, died at home on July 31, 2002. Rene resided with his wife, Helen, in Blairsden. Together, with their children, they lived in Plumas County for 54 years. Rene was born in San Francisco in 1922. He attended Mission High School where he was an All-City football player and a member of crew. In 1999, he was inducted in the San Francisco Mission High Hall of Fame. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. In 1948, Rene and his family purchased the Cromberg store. After selling the store, he gained employment with the U.S. Forest Service and moved to Blairsden in 1958. Rene enjoyed the outdoors. He was a fisherman and enjoyed hunting. Rene is survived by his wife, Helen; son, Ed of Salem, Ore.; daughter, Kristy of Blairsden; son, Mike of Boise, Idaho; and grandsons Brodie and Tanner of Salem, Ore. A gravesite service was held at Johnsville Cemetery
on Aug. 5, 2002 followed by a celebration of his life at The Village Baker in Blairsden. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of the donors choice.
