CURITS WILLIAM BALCOM
Curtis William Balcom, age 97, died on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at Colony Park Care Center in Modesto,  Calif. He was born in Griswold, Iowa on January 22, 1908, and lived in Herlong,  Calif. from 1947 to 1994.
Balcom served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1947 and worked at the Sierra Ordnance Depot as an ammunition supervisor from 1947 to 1970. He was a member of the post Chapel and V.F.W. of Herlong, and enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Balcom was preceded in death by his wife Zeta Ruth, four brothers and one sister. He is survived by brother Donald Balcom of Modesto, three grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005 at Diamond Crest Cemetery in Johnstonville,  Calif.

GUENTHER L. GONZALES
Guenther L. Gonzales, age 50, died on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, in Spokane, Wash. He was a resident of Susanville,  Calif. for many years. Heritage Funeral Home at 508 N. Government Way, in Spokane is handling the arrangements.

RICHARD SARGENT
Richard Sargent was born on Jan. 12, 1934, in Portola,  Calif., and passed away Thursday, March 2, 2006, in Reno, Nev., at Washoe Medical Center.
Richard is survived by his wife Charlotte of 47 years; his children Loretta Parker, of Douglas, Ga., Susan Morgan, of Hayward,  Calif., and Dennis Sargent, of Sparks, Nev.; siblings Virginia Paine, of Gold Hill, Ore., Ray Sargent, of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Loretta "Gail" Clark, of Sparks, Nev.; grandchildren Shane Parker, of Ambrose, Ga., Jason Morgan, of Hayward, Janea Sargent, of Sparks; and great-grandchildren Kaytlynn Parker and Kalvin Parker, of Alma, Ga.; nieces and nephews Suzanne Roberts, Steven West, Glenn Ray Sargent, Debi Peters and Blair Clark, as well as several great nieces and great nephews.
Sargent was in the Air Force for four years, worked as a police officer at Sierra Army Depot in Herlong,  Calif., for 34 years and worked for the facilities and maintenance department for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 16 years.
He was loved and will be missed by all, especially his four-legged friends, Annie, Lily, Pugsly, Libby, Francie, Simon and Sadies.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, March 10, 2006, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Richmond Road.

OLIVE PEARL CORK
Olive Pearl Cork passed away March 2, 2006, at Seneca Nursing Home in Chester,  Calif. She was born June 30, 1917 in Marinetto, Wis.
Olive moved to Rockford, Ill., and met and married Francis Cork in 1938. They moved to Sacramento,  Calif., in 1959. Francis died in 1976. Olive moved to Susanville in 1997 and lived at Lassen Manor for more than eight years. She loved music and song and played guitar and mouth organ. She loved to read and watch TV. She loved jewelry and wore a ring on each finger. She loved going to lunch and having her hair done at Elite Salon where everyone knew her.
She is survived by her sister Carmon Nystrom, of Marinette, Wis.; her brother Robert Peterson, of Florida; daughter Sally Pastor and her husband Jack, of Susanville; granddaughters Marleen Norvell, of Susanville, Kathleen Andrea, of Pollock Pines, and Tammy Pastor, of Las Vegas; grandson Robert Pastor, of Susanville; great-grandchildren Stephanie, Amanda, Michael, Corey and Steven; her daughter Barbara Doyle and her husband Larry, of Rockford; granddaughters Dawn Bryant and Teresa Lapp; grandson Mark Doyle; and great-grandchildren Amy, Danielle and Michael.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 11, at Walton's Colonial Mortuary. She will be laid to rest at Diamond Crest Cemetery in Susanville.

DONALD MARTELL
Donald Martell, 67, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, in Windsor,  Calif. He was born Sept. 30, 1938, to Milton Martell and Helen Martell.
Donald was a native of Santa Rosa,  Calif., and a Chester resident for 26 years.
He was involved with Ducks Unlimited, California Waterfowl Association, Yellowcreek Restoration Project, Plumbers Union 38 and a retiree of Chester Plumbing.
Martell was an avid catch-and-release fly fisherman, who tied his own flies, and a deer hunter. He served five years in the Air Force in Okinawa and Germany.
A man of very modest means and a friend to everyone he had a heart of gold.
Special thanks to Susan Fiori and Mary of Hospice.
Donald is survived by son Gregory Martell; daughter Renee and her husband Steven Cole; his sister Karen Peterson; grandchildren Melissa Martell, Amanda Martell, Elizabeth Cole; and extended family Mark Vincent, Jackie Martell and Lou Cerri.
Memorial services were held Friday, March 3, at Chapel of the Chimes in Santa Rosa,  Calif.

ROY MARION BOOTS
Westwood resident Roy Marion Boots peacefully passed from this life Friday morning, Feb. 24, 2006, with his loving family at his side, at his residence in Westwood,  Calif., following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born 69 years ago on Jan. 19, 1937, in Chico,  Calif., to the late Harold and Dorothy Boots, he was raised and educated in Chico where he attended Chico High School.
In November 1954 Roy entered the armed forces serving his country honorably as a member of the U.S. Navy for four years. Upon his discharge he returned to Butte County until moving to Westwood in 1970.
Roy retired from Asplundh Tree Service as a supervisor in the Chester/Lake Almanor area after 28 years of loyal and dedicated service to the company.
On May 28, 1983, Roy married his soulmate Sharon Puryear in a ceremony in Reno, Nev., and together they returned to Westwood.
Roy was an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed both hunting and fishing. He found great pleasure in both working on and riding motorcycles. He was just as comfortable cruising on a Harley as he was screaming through the woods on his dirt bike.
Roy's caring personality was recognized by everyone he came in contact with. He was always there to help those in need. Even through his illness he would try to lend an hand to those in need with nary a complaint. Roy volunteered at the Almanor Aide and Activities Thrift Shop in Westwood for some 10 years and had a special relationship with Jesus Cares Ministries, of Westwood.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Roy leaves in passing his wife of 22 years Sharon, of Westwood; sons Von Roy Boots, of Westwood, Mike Short, of Portola, Vincent Short, of Greenville, Eddie and his wife Shannon Short, both of Pismo Beach, Calif, Derek Short and Devin Short, both of Westwood; daughters Deanna Bustamante, of Susanville, Linda Boots, of Marysville,  Calif., Sheila Abbott, of Westwood; brothers Edgar Boots, of Chico, Tom Boots, of Lucerne Valley,  Calif.; sister, Mary Hales, of Paradise; 25 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren along with four great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Roy's life to include military honors will take place at 1 p.m., Friday, March 10, 2006, at the graveside in the Westwood Cemetery. An opportunity to express condolences and sign the memorial guest register is available online at fehrmanmortuary.com.
The family suggests any remembrances in Roy's memory be made to the Jesus Cares Ministries, of Westwood, c/o Fehrman Mortuary and Crematory P.O. Box 803 Greenville, CA 95947.
