VICTORIA SALAS
Victoria Salas, 77, died on Monday, Dec. 27, 2004.
She was born in Mexico and had resided in Janesville, Calif. for the past 52 years.
Victoria is survived by her husband of 55 years, Cesario Salas.
Also surviving are her son, Hugo Salas of Richmond, Calif. son Cesario ‘Chach’ Salas of Janesville; daughter, Vickie Schmidt of Janesville; daughter Laura Rose of Susanville; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.
OLA ESTHER WINSHIP
Ola Esther Winship passed away Thursday, January 6, 2005 at Washoe Medical Center at the age of 81.
She was born June 15, 1923 in Cane Hill, Arkansas.
She had been a Lassen County resident for the past 62 years.
She owned Elmers Keg and Pizza for 19 years, and was a Mail Carrier for 8 years.
She loved to spend time with her family and enjoyed the outdoors.
She is survived by her daughters Carolyn Adams, and Deanna and her husband Richard Zunnino both of Reno, Nev; three step-sons Keith Winship, Ralph Jr. Winship, and Randy Lee Winship, all of Susanville; three sisters, Helen Biggs, Audrey Stone, Roxie Huffacre all of Arkansas; brothers Troy McCracken and Howard and his wife Helen McCracken both of Susanville; five great-grandchildren, eight grandchildren, preceded in death by her son Dale Cook.
There will be a memorial service for Ola at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 15 at Walton’s Colonial Mortuary.
MARILYN JANICE HOLMES
Marilyn Janice Holmes passed away quietly Dec. 21, at Banner Lassen Medical Center in Susanville. She was 82 years old. She was married to Burwell Holmes for 63 years.
Marilyn was born Feb. 10, 1922 in Idaho, to Walter Denton and Madge Brooks. She grew up in Susanville attending grade school, Lassen High and the old Junior College.
Her father worked in the woods for Fruit Growers Supply Co. She spent many summers out in the woods at camp 10.
She met her husband, "Bur", a local businessman and became a Navy bride in 1941. They had two children before moving to Sacramento in 1951. Marilyn and Bur were avid golfers. This led to their retirement at Kelly Ridge Golf Club, above Oroville. They have lived in retirement in Chico, Sacramento and Susanville.
Marilyn was affectionately known as "Mer mer." She will be remembered by family and friends as a wonderful cook and gracious hostess.
She is survived by her husband Bur of Susanville, son Kelley, of Milford his wife Patty and their children Jamie and Scott, daughter Kris Daniels and child Patrick, of Sacramento. Also survived by her brother Lane Denton and family, of Piedmont.
Services will be private.
JOHN LAURENCE
John Laurence passed away Tuesday, Dec. 28, in his home at the age of 75. He was born July 12, 1929, in the small Central Valley town of Dos Palas to John and Francesca Laurence.
John grew up in Los Banos and began working for the State of California Department of Fish and Game in 1950. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He returned to Los Banos in 1956 and he resumed his duties at the Department of Fish and Game as a Heavy Equipment operator. He was transferred to Honey Lake Wildlife Refuge in 1961 where he lived and worked until his retirement in September 1999.
John was known to the locals as "Uncle John", he was very proud of the many levees and ponds he helped to build on the refuge. The old stone building at the Fleming Unit where he lived for many years is now known as Laurence Hall. His home away from home was the Seven Acres Café in Litchfield where he ate lunch and dinner almost every day and chatted with "other family."
John is preceded in death by his brother Joseph Laurence, sister Mary Laurence and niece Susan Laurence. He is survived by his sister-in-law Margaret Laurence and niece Jane Laurence Patricio.
Internment will be at a later date at the San Joaquin Valley Natinal Cemetery.
A local Memorial Service is to be planned.

RICHARD RUSSELL MARTIN
Richard Russell Martin, aka "Curley" and "70 Martin" passed away at Washoe Medical Center at 2 p.m. on Dec. 28, with his loving family around him.
He was born in Eureka, Nev., to Anona Scott Martin and Richard C. Martin on Sept. 11, 1925. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Philip Francs Martin. He is survived by his loving wife Donna, brother David L. Martin, son Richard Myron Martin, daughter Lee Rae Carner, grandson Russell Akins, granddaughter Casey Akins and several nieces and nephews.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served until the end of WWII, being stationed on the U.S.S. Enterprise and Midway Island. Upon his discharge, he went into business in Lovelock, Nev. He was one of the originators of the "Lovelock Merchants Baseball Team," which was a great love of his. He managed the team and played third base and pitcher.
He moved to Reno in 1965 and worked several years as a chief cook. In 1976 he went to work at Washoe Medical Center as a HVAC man and retired from there in 1991.
His second great love was farming. He and his wife farmed in Doyle from 1986-2001. He retired for the second time and returned to Reno.
He was an exceptional individual with a great love of family, friends and animals. With an impish glint in his eyes and a lilt in his voice, he always talked 'for' his pets. He will be so greatly missed by all who knew him, especially by his family and animals.
A memorial service was held Jan. 7, at Walton's Funeral Home, 875 W. Second St., Reno, Nev. Private interment will be in Fallon, Nev.
GLADYS SPALDING
Gladys Spalding passed away Monday, Dec. 20, at her home in Redding. She was born in 1912 on a remote ranch on Madeline Plains in Lassen County. Her father, Erle B. Coffin, had come west from New York at age fourteen, where he and his father settled in Honey Lake Valley. There he met his life mate, Franky Cain, who was born to an established pioneer family. They married and moved to the plains (near Termo) where they bore four children and raised livestock. When Gladys was 11 years old the family moved to Susanville and then to a ranch (near Antelope grade) where her parents developed the scenic Hidden Valley Hereford Ranch. Erle was soon an esteemed rancher raising show cattle and Morgan horses, and he also established Coffin Company Real Estate and Insurance Company in Susanville with his elder son and daughter.
Gladys attended local schools and Heald Business College in San Jose. She worked for several years for the California Pacific Utilities Company and in 1947 became Deputy County Clerk of Lassen County. In 1956 she accepted the position of Assistant County Clerk of Shasta County, where she remained until her retirement in 1974.
"Glady" loved her family and friends and the simple outdoor life. She purchased a share of R-Ranch in Siskiyou County where she spent considerable time roaming the hills on horseback. She loved working in her yard in Redding and the manual labor it entailed. She enjoyed her grandson and family who lived nearby and her friends. She was a member of the Retired Public Employees Association.
Gladys was married to Nelmer Spalding, whose roots grow deep in Lassen County. He preceded her in death in 1962. She survived her brother Lester Coffin, her sister Mildred Hardy and her grandson Marcus Delgado. She leaves her brother Milton (Chub) Coffin, of Janesville, her daughter Carolyn Schaeffer, of Rocklin, her grandson Evan Delgado, of Redding and six great-grandchildren: Morgan, Conner and Erik Delgado, of Redding, Katherine and Jacob Delgado, of Bellingham, Wash., and Sarah Cole, of Portland, Ore.
There was no funeral service, but a graveside service will be held at Lassen Cemetery
