George Elbert Converse
Funeral services for George Elbert Converse, 72, of Fairfield will be 11 a.m. Friday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. A chaplain from Travis Air Force Base will preside. Burial will be private.
Born July 9, 1925, in Toledo, Ohio, Mr. Converse died Aug. 4, 1997, at his Fairfield home.
He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1951; and in the Air Force from 1951 to 1973. He was a technical sergeant. He served in the North Atlantic on the U.S.S. Solomons Escort Carrier during World War II and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Mr. Converse worked as the materials manager for Solano Community College in Suisun for 19 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Air Force Sergeants Association, and the Retired Enlistees Association.
He enjoyed bowling.
Mr. Converse is survived by his daughter, Karen of Davis; sons, Davis William of Fairfield; former wife, Ursula Heckner-Hagen of Davis; granddaughters, Tara and Lauren Gardiner of Fairfield; and several friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Genice, in 1978.
Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Dora Ella Haynie
A private memorial service will be held for Dora Ella Haynie, 81, of Vallejo.
At the request of the family, there will be no formal services. Inurnment will be private at Fairmont Memorial Park.
Born May 24, 1916, in Carolton, Mo., Mrs. Haynie died Aug. 3, 1997, in Sutter Solano Hospital, Vallejo after a long illness.
She moved to Vallejo one year ago and resided in Fairfield for 20 years. She worked as a maid in numerous hotels for 28 years. According to her family, she had a "heart as big as Texas."
Mrs. Haynie is survived by daughters, Wilma Fay Stowels of Vallejo and Doris McClure of California; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Judith Ann Montenegro
A graveside service for Judith Ann Montenegro, 49, will be 2 p.m. Friday in Silveyville Cemetery. Pastor Steve Rost of Dixon Neighborhood Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Silveyville Cemetery.
Born July 23, 1948, in Shenandoah, Iowa, Mrs. Montenegro died Aug. 2, 1997, in Vallejo after a brief illness.
She lived in Solano County for many years and worked for Yolo Cab Company as a dispatcher. She enjoyed country music, dancing, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Montenegro is survived by her daughters, Sherry Ann Haight of Sacramento and Tina Maria Turner of West Sacramento; son, Jaime Philip Vasquez of Vacaville; three grandchildren; and her mother, Lela L. Martin of Dixon.

John Nolan Carr
Memorial services for John Nolan Carr, 41, formerly of Vacaville, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at United Christian Parish, 745 N. Brush St. in Lakeport.
Born Aug. 4, 1956, in Sacramento, he died Aug. 5, 1997, in an auto accident on Elk Mountain Road in Upper Lake.
He grew up and attended school in Eagle Mountain At age 16, he enlisted in the Army and served in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1976.
Mr. Carr lived in Vacaville from 1981 to 1985. He owned C&C Janitorial, which he ran with his wife, Cheryl. He attended Solano Community College where he studied welding and machine work. He enjoyed sports, playing softball with friends, tinkering with cars and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Tinney Carr; sons, John Ryan and Matthew Richard; parents, Richard and Jean of Tuolumne City; grandmother, Isla Terpenning of Tuolumne City; sister, Sherri Lozoya Bond of Tuolumne City; brother, Brian of Tuolumne City; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Leroy Alfred Gagnon
Leroy Alfred Gagnon, 78, of Corning died Aug. 3, 1997, at his home in Corning after a long illness.
Private interment will be held at the Rockville Cemetery
today.
Born Aug. 14, 1918, in Greely, Colo., he had lived in Corning for 20 years. He was in the U.S. Army for three years and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He worked as a warehouseman for many years in the Oakland/Hayward area. He later worked as a union representative for the Teamsters Local 853 in Oakland for 15 years.
Mr. Gagnon was an avid lover of the outdoors.
Mr. Gagnon is survived by his wife, Billie of Corning; son, Ron of Corning; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
Vera MaeBelle Palmer
A memorial service for Vera MaeBelle Palmer, 76, of Vacaville will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Church of Christ in Vacaville.
Minister Ed Sanderson of the Church of Christ will officiate.
Born Sept. 10, 1920, in Shawnee, Okla., Mrs. Palmer died Aug. 7, 1997, in Vacaville after a long illness.
An eight-year Vacaville resident, she worked for the Riverside Hospital for 15 years as a laboratory technician. She was also a member of the Church of Christ.
Mrs. Palmer is survived by sisters, Mary Kingsbury of Oklahoma, Ida Parks of Vallejo, Amy Snyder of Stockton and Lille Shelton of Vacaville; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Irene Shelton; six brothers; and three sisters.
Arrangements are by McCune Garden Chapel.
William Raymond Southward
A Mass of Christian Burial for William Raymond Southward, 50, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
The Rev. Luciano Valenzuela will officiate. Inurnment will be private.
Born April 25, 1947, in Atascadero, he died Aug. 6, 1997, at his home in Fairfield after a sudden illness.
He graduated from Holy Spirit School in 1961. He graduated from Armijo High School in 1965 and was on the junior and senior varsity basketball teams. He graduated from Foothill College in 1967 and graduated from California State University, Sacramento, with a bachelor's degree in marketing.
Mr. Southward served in the Navy and owned and operated the Atlantis Waterbed Store in Fairfield in the 1970s. In the 1980s he was a real estate entrepreneur.
In the 1990s he worked as a schoolteacher for both the Travis and Fairfield-Suisun unified school districts. He was also a state certified massage therapist and worked at a local health club.
Mr. Southward was an avid water and snow skier. According to his family, he was a treacherous ping pong and racquetball player. He was listed in the Guinness Book of Records for playing racquetball for 72 straight hours for a local charity. He was a voracious reader, as well as a lover of art. He had an extensive collection of fine art.
He is survived by his parents, Raymond and Patricia of Fairfield; grandmother, Helen Milloy of Seattle; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marcia and William Espinosa of Sacramento, Michelle of Sacramento, Marne and Paul McHale of Forestville and Maureen Southward of Monte Rio; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert of Fairfield, James and Margo of Sebastapol, Michael and Rose Mary of Fairfield, and Jon Southward of Sacramento; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation is 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 1850 W. Texas St. in Fairfield. Rosary will be a recited at 7 p.m.

LaVerna Mae Vazquez
Graveside services for LaVerna Mae Vazquez, 58, formerly of Fairfield, will be 3 p.m. today at Monument Hill Memorial Park in Woodland.
Born Aug. 25, 1938, in Uhrichville, Ohio, she died Aug. 4, 1997, at her daughter's home in Antioch.
Mrs. Vasquez was a Solano County resident for 29 years. She also lived in Guinda for 13 years and in Woodland for one year. She was employed by H.S.S.I. as an office manager.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, George and Connie Allison of Suisun; daughters and son-in-law, Andrea and Rafael Nunn of Antioch and Brenda Turner of Vacaville; brother, Floyd Mathias of Fairfield; eight grandchildren; three nephews; and a niece.
Arrangements are under the direction of McNary's Chapel in Woodland.
John James Stead
John James Stead, 30, of Vacaville, died Aug. 5, 1997.
No formal services will be held.
Born Aug. 5, 1967, in Vallejo, he had lived in Vacaville most of his life. He moved to Oakland in November.
An auto technician, Mr. Stead enjoyed working on cars, four-wheeling, riding mountain bikes and taking his boat out onto the water.
He is survived by his mother, Carol Osegueda of Oakland; sister, Gina Hopper of Fallon, Nev.; and grandparents, Lee and Jack Osegueda of Oakland and Dave and Helen Stead of Walnut Creek.
Arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society.
LaVeta Houtz Gregerson
Funeral services for LaVeta Houtz Gregerson, 74, of Fairfield, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fairfield.
Bishop Mack Barney will officiate. Interment will be in the Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.
She was born May 29, 1923, in Mapleton, Utah. Mrs. Gregerson died Aug. 10, 1997, in the University of California, Davis, Medical Center after a short illness.
Mrs. Gregerson lived in Fairfield for 44 years. She worked as a beautician for six years in Salt Lake City before moving to California. She worked in food service with the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District for five years. She then worked at the Fire House Deli and Raley's Supermarket Deli for 13 years before retiring in 1985.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served as relief society president and junior Sunday school coordinator. She also worked as secretary for the organization. She enjoyed crocheting and was an avid sports fan.
Mrs. Gregerson is survived by her sons, David of Orem, Utah, and Scott and Dennis, both of Vacaville; brother, Lynn Houtz of Mapleton; sisters, Lucile Harmon, Mozelle Cox and Delia Johnson, all of Salt Lake City, and Esther Parry of Mapleton; 17 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie, in 1981.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Travis Boulevard in Fairfield.
Arrangements are by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
Louise Albea Nance
Interment will be private for Louise Albea Nance, 78, of Vacaville.
At her request, there will be no funeral services.
Born June 29, 1919, in Woods, Texas, Mrs. Nance died Aug. 9, 1997, in VacaValley Hospital after a long illness.
She moved to the area in 1961. Mrs. Nance was a homemaker and mother for more than 55 years.
Mrs. Nance is survived by her husband, Bob of Vacaville; daughters, Roberta of Vacaville, Kay Frank and her husband, Robert, of Pleasanton, Janice Beach and her husband, Pat, of Davis, and Nancy Bastida and her husband, Ken, of Dublin; son, Earl and his wife, Susan, of Chico; sisters, Lucy Lindenborn and Arlene Albea, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Jana Nobrega of Pleasanton, Jadene of Chico, Celeste Beach of Davis, and Jack, Sam, and Kyria of Dublin.
Arrangements are by Vaca Hills Chapel.
