JAHNKE - Elizabeth Catherine
JAHNKE - Elizabeth Catherine was born September 4, 1909, the fourth child to Cornelius and Margaretha (Janz) Jahnke. She was born on the farm at Main Centre. Her parents were the first couple to be married in the Main Centre church that Grandpa Janz had helped build. Elizabeth had seven brothers and sisters. They are Olga, Pete, Helen, Annie, Ben, Elmer and Bruce. Needless to say it was a very busy home with everyone having their chores and responsibilities. It was a home filled with faith, love, discipline and fun. After Elizabeth grew up she taught at ‘Salt Lake’ and ‘Bethania’ schools in the R.M. of Excelsior. She later taught in Regina, Vernon, B.C., Swift Current and Herbert. Elizabeth took great pride in her personal learning and great pride in the accomplishments of her students. In the winter of ’41 Elizabeth worked for two months in an arms factory in Long Branch, Ont. Always interested in new experiences she taught the children of the Canadian Armed Forces in Germany from 1961-1963. During her teaching years and during her retirement Elizabeth’s passion was traveling as she went to China, East Africa, Germany, Russia, Belgium, Israel, Japan, India, Asia, Egypt—and I’m sure many more places. We think it was only seven years ago that she went on an archaeological dig in Turkey! It was in 1998 after a health scare while living in Regina she spent some time with Greg, Cathy and Megan. She then made the move to the Herbert Heritage Manor where she received very good care for her remaining years. She sadly suffered a serious stroke on Friday and went to be with her Lord Wednesday morning at the age of ninety-four (94) years. Elizabeth enjoyed reading, singing, piano and especially travel. She was very close to her father and could rarely find fault with her brothers. She was a strong, determined, bright lady who loved and felt pride in her family—the nieces and nephews can all attest to this. Elizabeth is survived by her brothers Elmer (Mary) Jahnke and Bruce Jahnke;17 nieces and nephews, 45 great nieces and great nephews as well as great-greats. She is predeceased by her parents Cornelius and Margaretha Jahnke; her brothers Pete (Sadie, Elizabeth) and Ben (Gudrun);sisters Olga (Herb), Helen (Vic), Annie ;sister-in-law Betty; two nieces Donna and Carol, one great nephew Ryan, one great niece Rachel and one great great nephew Brendan. Elizabeth was much loved and treasured and she will be missed. A funeral was held on Saturday, April 24, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. from the Herbert MB Church with Pastor Bob Cappelle officiating.
