During their years in B.C., they enjoyed many adventures on their boat "The Wasagaming". They continued to come each year to their cottage at Clear Lake, a place that remained one of the great joys of Betty’s life. Betty was able to spend time there this summer, enjoying her family and her many cherished friends at "the lake". Betty was a devoted, loving and kind daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was also blessed with many dear friends, both lifelong and more recent. Their dedication throughout Betty’s life, and especially in her last days of illness, is a testament to those friendships. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the second floor of the Assiniboine Centre and the fourth floor of Brandon Regional Health Centre for their care and compassion during Betty’s final illness. A private family graveside service will be followed by a memorial service at Central United Church, 327-8th Street, on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Shannon McCarthy officiating. KRAHN: Victor Carl Krahn of Rivers, beloved husband of Tamara, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord on February 3, 2007 at the age of 38 years. Vic was born on January 22, 1969 in Brandon, Manitoba. At the age of 2 ½ he was adopted into the Krahn family, joining them at their farm in Rivers. Vic attended school in Rivers until grade 11 and finished his final year of high school at the Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna. After graduating in 1987, Vic continued on in his education at Providence College in Otterburne, graduating with a Bachelor in Biblical Studies in 1990. This is also where he met the love of his life, Tamara. After graduation, Vic began farming together with his dad and brother, David. On June 15, 1991, Vic married Tamara Peters of Steinbach, MB. At the end of 1993, Vic, together with his family, moved off the farm and into Winnipeg and, a few months later, to Steinbach. Over the next few years, Vic worked many different jobs. In the summer of 1997, Vic started a career as a truck driver. In 2001, Vic returned to the farm to work with his dad and brother, returning again to driving truck a year later. In November 2004, Vic chose to leave his trucking career so he could be more available to his family. He spent his last year and a half working at Redfern Farm Services in Rivers as a logistics coordinator. Over the years, Vic has had an active role in church. He has taught Sunday School, played his violin, was part of a quartet, and participated in church dramas. Vic loved to work, and each job usually became a part of who he was. But his biggest accomplishments in life were his five children. He was always proud of who they were and loved them individually with their own unique personalities and interests. Vic was usually busy with work and family, however, he did enjoy some interests of his own. Music was always a part of his life, whether he was playing his violin, singing, or listening to his favourite artists. He also loved doing anything with his hands, whether it was a building project, yard work, or keeping his vehicles immaculate. Above all else, Vic held his faith in God very close to his heart. His heart’s desire was to be a man of God, and his faith shone more than ever in his last months. On June 30, 2006 Vic was diagnosed with colon cancer. The diagnosis was not good, but his health declined much quicker than we expected. He battled courageously with cancer the last 7 months of his life. His humour, his inner strength, and his positive spirit remained with him until his final breath. Vic is survived by his loving wife, Tamara, and his wonderful 5 children: Christopher (13), Jayson (11), Caleb (9), Brooklyn (6), and Samuel (3). He is also survived by his mother, Elsa Krahn of Brandon, by his siblings, David (Shirl) Krahn of Rivers, and their children Ryan (Chelsea), Danica, and Jeremy; Irene (Ted) Reimer of Stonewall, and their children Josh and Zachary; and Diane (Dale) Buhler of Swan River, and their children Jessica, Kirsty and Johnathon. In addition, he is survived by Tamara’s family, Bill and Mary Peters of Steinbach; Garry and Cheryl Dueck of Steinbach, and David and Lorna Peters of Winnipeg and their children, Kayla, Justin, Courtney and Oliver. His father, John A. Krahn predeceased Vic, on August 22, 2005. The funeral service was held at the McDiarmid Drive Alliance Church on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. Interment followed at the Rivers Mennonite Cemetery. If friends desire, donations in memory of Victor may be made to an education fund established for Victor and Tamara’s five children. Contributions may be forwarded to the Rivers Branch of the Westoba Credit Union, Box 298, Rivers, MB, R0K 1X0.

KAPETZ: Mike Kapetz of Brandon, beloved husband of Fran and dear father of Trevor, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer at the Brandon Regional Health Centre Saturday, January 13, 2007. Mike was born in Roblin, MB to William and Annie Kapetz. After graduating from high school he left home soon after to work for Manitoba Highways on a construction crew. This proved to be the start of a long and fulfilling career of 41 years. He lived and worked in many areas of southern Manitoba and Winnipeg. He moved to Thompson on a temporary assignment with Northern Affairs to manage the construction of airports in remote locations and ended up staying. In the north, he worked in many aboriginal communities using his knowledge of road construction on permafrost and frozen lakes. It was also in the north where he met his wife, Fran. After Mike finished his assignment with Northern Affairs he returned to the Highways Department in Thompson to work in a supervisory role with winter roads. While in Thompson, he enjoyed camping at Paint Lake with his family. Many of our fondest memories as a family were made in the north. Mike retired from the Highways Department in March, 1996 and he and Fran moved to Brandon soon after to be close to Trevor who was attending University there. With his easy-going nature, Mike made new friends among his neighbors, golf and curling. He enjoyed the Tuesday morning coffee club in Brandon with his retired colleagues. Dad always enjoyed taking Mindy out for walks as well as working in his garden. More than anything, Mike was a devoted husband and family man who treated his adopted family like his own. As a father, he was interested in every part of Trevor’s life and there were no sacrifices he wasn’t prepared to make for him, supporting his endeavors in school, music, sports and career. He was tremendously proud of his son. If you knew Mike, you know what it means to be patient, gentle, kind and neighborly. Mike will be sadly missed as a husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. Mike is survived by his wife Fran, son Trevor of Brandon, and Mindy (family pet); step-children Bev Toews (Ed) of Olds, AB; Darcy Graham (Bob) of Drumheller, AB; Craig Ginn (Carla) of Lethbridge, AB; grandchildren: Tyler, Ben Kelley, Charley, Sarah, Aron, Silas, and Rachael; brother-in-law Ken Craig (Joan); sister-in-law Ruth Hansen of Winnipeg; sisters Lillian Klysh (Father Myron) of Winnipeg; Shirley Karau (Fred) of Brandon; sisters-in-law Helen Kapetz of Kamloops, Marge Kapetz and aunt Molly Korpan of Roblin and many cousins, nephews and nieces. KASPICK: Lorne Stanley Kaspick of Brandon passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Assiniboine Centre on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at the age of 91 years. Lorne was born in Eden, Manitoba on June 15, 1917, son of Michael and Frances Kaspick. He married Sophie (Susie) Minkus in October 1941. Lorne worked with Hydro for 33 years. He started on the Pole Crew working all throughout Southern Manitoba until he took a permanent job with the 10th Street office. He always loved his job and enjoyed joking back and forth with his fellow employees. After his retirement in September 1979, he found a great source of joy just puttering and tinkering in the garage and around the yard. Listening to CKLQ, Old Time Hour in the evening brought endless pleasure to him, especially the fiddle music. Dorothy and Bob will miss their Sunday visits with Lorne, especially all their conversations and memories about the good old days. Lorne is survived by son Bob (Gail), daughter Dorothy, all of Brandon; Carman’s wife Marge of Thunder Bay, ON; grandsons Trevor and Travis Kaspick of Kelowna, B.C.; brother Eddy Kaspick and family of Kenora, ON. William was predeceased by his wife Helen, brothers Nick, Mike and Joe; sisters Agnes, Ann, Marie and Kaye. He is survived by brother John (Shirley) and several nephews and nieces. Funeral will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Friday, July 4, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Mona Franklin officiating. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Curly may be made to a charity of choice.

KRYSOWATY: Mike Krysowaty passed away peacefully on April 15, 2009, with his family by his side. Mike is survived by his wife Evelyn and his children Brian (Bonnie) and Bonnie (Jay Hilford) and his grandson Russell along with his sisters Sonia (Chalanchuk) and Anne (Doroschuk), brother Bill and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Eileen (Mychasiw). Mike was born on December 8, 1935, in Ohla, Manitoba, to Anton and Katie Krysowaty, who were immigrants of the Ukraine. Mike lived on a farm where the land was cleared and the homestead built by his grandfather Mickita Krysowaty and family in 1906. Mike's father purchased more land before passing away when Mike was only 15. Mike left school after grade 8 to work on the family farm to provide a living for his mother and siblings. Life was very tough making ends meet and living off the land, sometimes having to choose between food and heat. Mike farmed and stayed with his mother until 1965 when he married Evelyn Mychasiw of Ohla and moved to Hamiota where he managed the Hamiota Hotel. In 1971, the family moved to Hartney where they owned and operated the Hartney Motor Hotel until 1981 when Mike retired, for the first time. Mike did not stay retired long. In the mid 1980’s, he ran the Hartney Golf Course, which he loved as it was outdoors and he was able to meet new friends and socialize with old ones. After the golf season was over, Mike ran the Hartney Skating Rink. At the time, the rink had natural, not artificial ice and Mike could be found at the rink at all hours putting down a layer of water to build the ice for all the kids to later skate on. In the 1990’s, Mike officially retired from working but was active at home, always in the garage working on something or out on the garden tractor cutting grass at home, the schools or the telephone office. It was very important to Mike that his children did well in life and graduate from university, as to not have as hard a life as he had. Mike always liked to share what he could and be generous. He always made sure that his children had care packages when they left for home. He gave so much and asked for so little in return. Mike took care of, provided well for, and did anything for his family. He taught his children a hard work ethic and made sure they always had jobs. However, Mike had a soft side as he would drive his children in his truck when the weather was bad for their paper routes. Mike worked hard and played hard. He loved to throw parties in the hotel, in the house basement or on the patio and tell stories, jokes or get into ‘mischief’ to get a laugh, but he would usually be laughing the loudest. Mike was always involved in hunting and fishing since he was young. Mike spent hours on the road everyday in the fall for bird and deer hunting seasons. Mike had a passion for animals and wildlife and was an active member of the Hartney and Brandon Game & Fish Associations as well as the Duck’s Unlimited Association where he, a few years back, received his 20-year appreciation award. Mike participated in the construction of the Hartney Pheasant Farm and Hartney Gun Range. He was also a member of the Hartney Elks Lodge and golfed, curled and also hunted moose and elk. Mike loved to drive around the countryside to see the progress of the farmer’s crops or spot wildlife and also loved to eat fresh produce from their huge garden. Mike loved to have all his family at home for Christmas, especially taking his grandson, his family and the dogs sledding down the Chain Lakes hill. Mike loved his RV trips with his wife and friends to California, Texas, Las Vegas, Nashville, and Minot for the ND State Fair. He also loved spending the weekends at Oak Lake in their trailer. Mike loved to teach both his children all the things he knew like fishing, hunting, using tools, carpentry, running a business, and golf. Mike was very giving in that respect. Mike and his son built the house in Hartney where they then moved to in 1981 and Mike resided until his passing. Mike "Honest to God!" was a loving husband, world’s greatest dad, mentor and good friend. He was truly a unique, one-of-a-kind man with a larger-than-life personality. He left all of us with good stories and memories and for that we thank him and will miss him so much. A Celebration of Mike’s Life was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Monday, April 20, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Michael Tkachuk officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mike may be made to the Canadian Diabetes. Association or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
