WEIGHT: Mr. Edwin Eugene Weight of Douglas died suddenly on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at the age of 74 years. Eugene was born April 14, 1934 to Edwin and Elizabeth Weight of Douglas, Manitoba. He attended Matheson and Derry Country schools and Douglas High School. He enjoyed sports and in 1953 skipped a rink of Ken Moorehead, Mel Wolfe and Wayne Blair, in the Annual Manitoba High School Boy’s Bonspiel in Brandon. They won the T. Eaton Company Trophy. He curled several years in Douglas rink and in later years attended all major curling events. As a teenager he joined the R.C.S.C. Corps "Swiftsure" and attained the rank of Petty Officer. Eugene was a civilian employee at CFB Shilo, working as a transport driver and appreciated for his punctuality. When he retired in 1995 he was honored by his peers at a luncheon for thirty years service. He was a faithful fan of the Marlins baseball team as well as all other baseball events. He umped many ball games for Douglas teams. Weekends in summer would find him at the Horse Races. Eugene enjoyed nature and hunting birds and big game in the fall. Eugene could recall dates and names without hesitation, a result of his love of reading. Eugene never married and was somewhat of a "loner" but he traveled extensively. He is survived by nieces Suzanne McBratney , Esquimalt, B.C. and Merna Kidd, Victoria; and her daughter, Andrea, Vancouver; two great nephews and many cousins of the McLean and Ardron families. He was survived by his only Uncle Herb McLean, Tacoma, Washington. He was predeceased by his parents’ sister Mary Lou Longley; brother-in-law Frank Longley; nephew Leonard Longley and great nephew Richard McBratney. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Douglas United Church, Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 at 1:30 pm with Rev. Barb Jardine officiating. Interment will follow at Madford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Unit 3, 824 – 18th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 5B7.

WHITTINGHAM: John Kelvin James (Kelly) Whittingham of the R.M. of Cornwallis, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on September 21, 2008 at the age of 71 years. Kelly was born on October 14, 1936 at Elgin, Manitoba. He was raised on a small family farm and attended school until Grade 6. He later took his GED and received his Grade 12 Education while working for the Brandon Fire Department. During his lifetime, Kelly worked as a long haul truck driver (driving for Allied Vans & Dindsdale), he sold Watkins products, and he farmed (PMU producer for many years). His final career was with the Brandon Fire Department as a Firefighter. Kelly belonged to many organizations including: Brandon Gymkana, Brandon Light Horse, M.G.R.A., Red Coates and the Queens Cowboys. Horses were his main passion. He could hardly wait each year to attend the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair to showcase his favorite Stallion, Skorflex. He could also be seen on horse back in parades dressed up as the Lone Ranger around Western Manitoba or dressed in his period costume with the Red Coats or Queens Cowboys. He even participated in period costume on horse back in a documentary film for television that was filmed in Saskatchewan. In his early years, he was very interested in endurance riding and participated in many competitions on horse back to raise money. Kelly was very proud to be a Firefighter with the Brandon Fire Department from October 8, 1963 until his retirement on October 31, 1994. During his time as a Firefighter, he worked his way through the ranks to become a Lieutenant. During his career with the Fire hall, he received the Governor General's Meritorious Service Award for 20 years of dedicated service, as well as his 25 year Manitoba Association of Fire Chiefs Exemplary Service medal, followed by his 30 year service bar. Kelly is survived by his children: son, John "Wayne" Whittingham (wife Judy), daughter, Victoria Elizabeth "Vicky" Wilson (husband Ron), son, Harold Kelvin Whittingham (friend Christine Hearn); grandchildren: Lorraine Wilson, Steven Wilson, Chad Whittingham and Clint Whittingham; sisters, Kathy McKay and Marion Yates; and brother, Brian Whittingham. He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys Elizabeth "Betty" Whittingham and brother, John Robert "Bob" Whittingham. A time of visitation will be held at Brockie Donovan Funeral Home, 332-8th Street, on Friday, September 26, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood of Central United Church officiating. The Honor Guard, Active and Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Brandon Fire Department. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Kelly may be made to the Brandon Firefighters Charity Fund, #1 Fire Hall, 637 Princess Avenue, Brandon, MB R7A 0P2, Attention: Kevin Groff.

WINNING: Irene Winning passed away at her residence at Fairview Home on August 7, 2008 at the age of 95 years. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at the Brandon Cemetery on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. The family gratefully declines flowers. Donations in memory of Irene may be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, 354 Tenth Street, Brandon, MB R7A 4G1.

WAINWRIGHT: Mr. David Brian Wainwright, beloved husband of Carita, of Brandon passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at the age of 56 years. Dave grew up in Brandon as the youngest of four children to Muriel and Harold Wainwright. Growing up he enjoyed playing cards, road hockey, baseball and many other sports. Dave also enjoyed camping with his family. He moved to Banff and then on to Calgary where he met his wife Carita, with whom he shared nearly 25 years of marriage. Dave and Carita moved to Brandon in 1984 with their two children. Dave was a great man with a big heart whose greatest enjoyment was the time he spent with his famly and friends. Dave attended school at George Fitton, Harrison High and then McLaren High School. Dave enjoyed a successful career with Manitoba Hydro. Dave enjoyed golf and was a member of the Glen Lea Golf Course. Dave also enjoyed Wheat Kings Hockey Games and any, and all, actives involving his grandchildren. Dave is survived by his loving wife Carita; his children Joanne (John) and Trent (Melissa); his parents Muriel and Harold Wainwright; his brother Rick (Joan); his sister Cheryl (Don); sister-in-law Betty; grandchildren Marcus, Tyra, Ryan, Jack, Dane and Anthony; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother James Wainwright. A service of remembrance was held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Shannon McCarthy of Central United Church officiating. Donations in memory of Dave may be made the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, "Palliative Care Services" 150 McTavish Ave. East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3 or Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 2W8.

WOODFIELD: In memory of Robert Harold Woodfield "Woody" of Forrest, MB who passed away June 29th, 2008 at his home. Woody was born January 17th, 1945 in Winnipeg, MB and moved to Brandon with his family in his early teens. He started and operated Woody’s Mobile Steam Cleaning in 1970 and continued to run until 2005. A long-standing member of the Brandon Wildlife Association, he served for numerous years as chairman for both the membership committee and, as most notably fisheries chairman. He enjoyed being outdoors fishing and camping, and amateur astronomy. He is survived by his loving wife Susan, sons Robert(Robin), and Bradley(Tania); grandchildren Zachary, Cole, Marshall, Christopher, Rae-Lynn, and Joseph; brothers Fred (Ellen) Woodfield, Ron (Brucein) Woodfield; sisters Lynn(Gene) Ash, MaryLou Woodfield and families. A memorial service will be held Monday July 7th, 2008 at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, at 11:00 a.m. with Lawrence McInnes as Funeral Celebrant.In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation 3-824 18th St., Brandon, Mb, R7A 5B7.

YOUNG: Valerie Beth Young, beloved wife of Darrell, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at the age of 43 years. Valerie was born on October 18, 1963 at Rossburn, Manitoba. During her lifetime, she took over 60 foster children into her home and never once called them a "foster" child. She will always be remembered for her work she did with her husband around the community. Valerie very much supported "For the Love of Our Children" and "Street Love Ministries." She volunteered much of her time and consistently helped every year with the Christmas dinner. Val had a strong faith and very much loved the Lord, Jesus. She is survived by her husband Darrell; sons Sammy, Jamie, Gavin, Lionel, Kyle and Ginew; daughter Lillian; mother Mary; sisters Crystal and Lisa; and by brother Joey. Valerie was predeceased by her grandmother Eliza Shingoose. A funeral service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Friday, March 23, 2007 with Rev. Dave Thiessen officiating. Interment will take place at the Waywayseecappo Presbyterian Cemetery on Monday, March 26, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Donations in memory of Valerie may be made to Street Love Ministries, 33-10th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4E4.

YOUNG: Violet Grace Young, beloved wife of the late George Young, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at the age of 89 years. Grace was born May 2, 1917 at Virden, Manitoba and lived in the Sifton Municipality on a farm. She was the eldest daughter and second eldest in the family of three brothers and one sister, born to Herb and Elizabeth Pigg. The family moved in 1922, from Virden to Brandon where they lived on 19th Street North. Mum began her schooling at the David Livingstone School. In 1928, the family moved to Section 28-10-20 at Kemnay where Mum finished her schooling before joining the work force. On June 24, 1937, Mum married George Young. They then moved five miles south of Kemnay where they started farming on the east half of 28-9-20 where Mum lived for 68 years until July, 2005 when she moved to the Colonial Estates, Queen’s Avenue, Brandon. Mum enjoyed being there as she could walk to the Shoppers’ Mall to meet her friends for coffee. Mum made many friends while at her new home. While living in the Roseland District, she was involved in the Roseland United Church, Roseland UCW, the Community Club and the Roseland Curling Rink. Mum was a great cook and loved to work in the kitchen trying new recipes. She also loved to play cards, curl, dance, work in her garden and spend time at the cabin at Oak Lake Resort. She loved her flowers at the cabin as well as having friends visit her and Dad over the 20 years that they spent there. Mum enjoyed life on the farm, especially calving season, spring seeding and harvest time with meals in the field. Mum is survived by son, Ted and wife Beth; grandsons, Edward and Jim and wife Vickie East; sister, Evelyn Canty; brother, Doug Pigg and partner Cynthia Swalwell and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George Young February 7, 1997; brothers Alfred and Norman; sisters-in-law, Lois Grant and Kay Pigg; brother-in-law, Bill Canty as well as two nephews and one niece. A memorial service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, on Saturday, February 10, 2007 with Rev. Harvey Hurren officiating. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Grace may be made to a charity of choice.

YABLONSKI: Lillian Virginia (née Wilczynski). Suddenly at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, January 9, 2007. Lillian is survived by her loving husband, Michael: sons, Michael Jr. (friend Elaine), granddaughter, Correna-Reece; Alvin (Debbie), grandson Kiel (friend Laurie) and daughter Linda. Lillian was born Easter Sunday, April 17, 1927 to John and Albina Wilczynski. She was predeceased by her brothers, Walter, Charlie and Victor and sister, Julia. Lillian received her schooling in Brandon and worked at Yaegers Furs. On August 9, 1947, she married Michael Yablonski. In 1957, the family moved to Portage la Prairie where they raised three children. Lillian belonged to the Ruth Rebekah Lodge and worked at the Manitoba School for ten years before returning to her home town, Brandon in 1986. Mike and Lillian enjoyed family gatherings, travel and church at St. Joseph’s Polish National Catholic Church. Lillian was a member of the Naomi Rebekah Lodge, the Arthritis Society and was a life member of the Polish Gymnastic Association – "Sokol". She was a much loved daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, aunt, grandmother, or Grammy, as Correna always called her, and a friend. She was Lucy. Prayers were said at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, on Thursday, January 11, 2007 Funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph’s Polish National Catholic Church, on Friday, January 12, 2007 with Fr. Jerzy Urbanski officiating. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations, in memory of Lillian, may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Unit 3, 824-18th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 5B7.

YANDA: Mrs. Kathleen June "Kay" Yanda, beloved wife of the late Terry Yanda, passed away at the Valleyview Care Centre on August 27, 2008 at the age of 86 years. Kay was born in Russell, Manitoba on June 16th, 1922. The family moved to Birtle in 1933, where she completed elementary and high school. Kay was always interested in psychiatry and after high school, she began her studies in nursing. She also served for two years in the Army during WWII and when she returned to civilian life, she took a secretarial course and worked in Winnipeg, Vancouver and at a logging camp close to Port Alberni, British Columbia. Kay then took a cruise with some friends and returned to resume her nursing diploma. In 1964, she graduated as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse and was awarded the Blanche Eugene Barager medal. She was then employed at the former Brandon Mental Health Centre until June 1967. On July 20th, 1966, Kathleen married a strapping gentleman named Terry Yanda, and not even a year later, she started her most rewarding career, that being motherhood. Their son, David, was born on June 26, 1967. Kay enjoyed babysitting and teaching children with disabilities. She was always involved with one thing or another like volunteering at outdoor-day or at the South End Community Centre, canvassing for Heart and Stroke, Cancer Society, and Block Parents. Whoever was in need - she was there. When her son turned 14, she returned to the workforce, retiring at age 65. Kay then became involved with the UCT Ladies Auxiliary, bowling and continued to support the Nurses' Alumni. She was also a member of St. George’s Anglican Church where she taught Sunday School. When mom and dad were both retired, they used to go on casino trips and she would go along with dad for his many seniors’ baseball outings. She also attended many Army reunions, as it was a good way to connect with some of her old friends. Mom and dad did many things together until he took ill and passed away in December 1997. The nurse in her looked after him until the end, and she always made sure he was never left alone, even on days that she had to attend to some other activity. Kay was always independent and did her own housework, yard work and even cut her own grass and shoveled her own snow. She looked after sick neighbours, dog sat her son’s dogs (she even wiped their feet before allowing them into the house). She always left a lasting impression with everyone she met. Due to ill health, Kay resided at the Valleyview Care Centre for the last two years. The staff there enjoyed having her around as she was a very good conversationalist and always liked to joke around. She will be missed. Kay is survived by her son David (fiancée Lina) as well as by her sister, Eleanor. A Memorial Service was held at St. George’s Anglican Church on August 29th, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Brown officiating. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Kay may be made to the Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation, 202-37-11th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4J2 or to The Children’s Hospital Foundation, CE 501, 840 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3A 1S1.
