Shirley Strain

May 7, 1934 - July 12, 2011

The death of Mrs. Shirley Joyce Strain (Dunn), 77 years, of Humboldt, SK occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on July 12, 2011 surrounded by her family. Shirley was born to William and Isabel Dunn in Ellisboro, Saskatchewan on May 7, 1934. She received her elementary and high school education in Ellisboro & Wolseley Schools. Shirley attended Normal School to attain her teaching certificate and then taught in the rural schools in that area. On August 21, 1954 Shirley married Robert Strain at Wolseley, SK. Together they moved to many locations throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Soon they became a growing family with four children. Their final move brought them to Humboldt in 1977 where Bob managed the Revelstoke Lumber Yard. Shirley loved to be with people, she worked at various jobs and volunteered in many places. She volunteered at the Good Neighbor Store, the Hospital Auxiliary, and the Legion Auxiliary. She was very giving of her time and of herself. Shirley was a very social person and liked to be busy going places, doing things and helping others. Her sense of humour was something to be envied, always enjoying a good laugh with others. She belonged to the bridge club and thoroughly enjoyed playing cards. Games were another of her pastimes and scrabble was a game she enjoyed playing with her grandchildren. Horseracing was another pastime that Shirley enjoyed. Shirley kept herself busy golf during the summer and curling during the winter. She was a good friend and participated in many activities with her friends. Robert and Shirley had the opportunity to travel, with Ireland and Alaska being two of their favorite destinations. Shirley had many good friends but family was the most important part of Shirley’s life – she loved being a grandmother and being with her family whenever the opportunity was there to watch their activities and to give them support. Shirley will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her three children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild: Wendy (Barry) Whitehouse and family, Jeff, Susan, Chad and Travis and his son Liam, all of Saskatoon; Lori (Kirk) Johb of LeRoy and sons, Adam of Biggar and Myles of LeRoy; and Brad (Debbie) Strain and son, Robbie all of Saskatoon; her brother Glen Dunn of Regina; her brothers-and-sisters-in-law: Raymond (Eve) Strain of Calgary; Ellen Hanson of Lumsden; Francis Perry of Regina and Jim (Gail) Strain of Calgary; and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Robert (2009) & her son Rob (1974), her parents William & Isabel Dunn, brother Ken (Arlette) Dunn, sister-in-law Rose Dunn, brothers-in-law Oscar Hanson & Mel Perry and parents-in-law Robert & Ola Strain. A Funeral Service was held on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Humboldt officiated by Rev. Canon Wayne Sturgess. Others taking part in the service were: organist, Kathy Wolfe; readers, Susan Parenteau and Kirk Johb; eulogists, Shirley’s grandsons – Jeff, Adam, Myles and Robbie; and memorial table attendants, Jen and Murray Weninger. An honor guard was formed by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and honorary pallbearers were “All those who shared in Shirley’s life”. Interment will follow at a later date at the Central Butte Cemetery. Memorial donations in Shirley’s memory may be directed to the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation or the John Dolan School, 3144 Arlington St., Saskatoon S7J 3L5. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Humboldt. 682-1622.

Agnes Doepker

March 8, 1919 - July 5, 2011

The family is saddened to announce that Mrs. Agnes Doepker, 92 years of Humboldt, passed away at Humboldt District Hospital on Tuesday, July 5, 2011. Agnes Bernadette was born on March 8, 1919 in Watson to Henry and Mary (Langenberger) Ebbing. She obtained her education at Watson School. Agnes ventured out to New Westminster and obtained employment there for a year. She returned to Saskatchewan and married the love of her life Gerhard Doepker on October 12, 1943. Together they moved to Winnipeg for a short time until Gerhard joined the Army and then they were stationed in Chilliwack. In 1945, they moved back to Saskatchewan and began farming in the Pilger area for approximately 23 years. They were blessed with nine children, seven boys and two girls, but unfortunately in 1959 their infant daughter Mary Ann passed away. In 1969, they moved to Humboldt and Gerhard became ill and passed away on January 19, 1971. Agnes was a very strong woman both physically and emotionally to be able to raise eight children in an era when conveniences were very scarce. From March of 1976 to June of 1979 Agnes worked at Farmer John’s in Humboldt and then worked at the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in the dietary department until 1984 when she retired. Her thirst for knowledge was very strong and she loved to read and in doing so kept abreast on current affairs and sports. She was very active with her family by supporting and participating in activities they were doing. Agnes could be found tobogganing at Muenster Hill with her children and grandchildren at the age of 70 plus. Family was number one and she cemented a wonderful family filled with morals, values and work ethics which she passed on to her children and grandchildren. She loved playing cards especially cribbage and in her quiet times she would knit. Agnes traveled to many destinations in Canada and the USA. Agnes was fortunate to be able to live independently until this spring when due to failing health she moved to St. Mary’s Villa. Agnes will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her eight children and their families: Allan (Linda) of Saskatoon and family, Keith and Kevin (Jamie) and children Halli and Madison; Gordon (Sharon) of Pilger and family, Wanda Krentz and children Kyle, Taylor and Samantha, Bonnie (Lyle) Olexsyn and children Sara and Connor, Garry (Natalie) and son Gabriel and Colin (Deanna Schick); Mark Doepker of Humboldt and family, Erica (Brian Snell), Ryley and Amy; Janice (Bryan) Tremblay of Humboldt and family, Nancy (Trevor) Baert and son Kade, Adam (Stacey) and daughter Andie and Evan; Leon (Donna) of Humboldt and family, Lindsey (Rory) Merkosky and daughter Rowan, Bailey (Justin Krisko), Mitchell and Kelsey; Neil (Valerie) of Saskatoon and family, Kristen (Warren) Kudeba and children Darcy and Drew and Kim (Ed) Rogers; Luke (Yvonne) Doepker of Saskatoon and family Kyle (Marisa Hrycyk), Justin and Brody; and David (JoAnn) of Humboldt and family Jill, Sarah and Matthew. Agnes was predeceased by her parents Henry and Mary Ebbing; husband Gerhard (Jan. 19, 1971); daughter Mary Ann (1959); three step brothers: Carl, Joe and Rudy Guber; sister and brother: Kay and Clem Ebbing. A Prayer Service was held on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. presided by Nestor Trach with organist Kathy Detillieux. Scripture readings were done by Sarah Doepker and Garry Doepker and Mitchell Doepker read a special poem. The Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. concelebrated by Fr. Emile April and Fr. Bernard Stauber, OSB. Others taking part in the mass were: cross bearer, Janice Tremblay; scripture readers, Bailey Doepker and Nancy Baert; intentions, Bonnie Olexsyn and music ministry, St. Augustine R.C. Choir. Gift bearers and a rose tribute were done by Agnes’s 24 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Agnes’s seven sons, Allan, Gordon, Mark, Leon, Neil, Luke and David. Both services were held from St. Augustine R.C. Church Humboldt. Interment followed at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery beside her husband Gerhard. Memorial donations in Agnes’s memory may be directed to Humboldt District Hospital Foundation (David Ronald Bell Cardiac Endowment Fund) or St. Augustine Parish Center. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home,Humboldt (306-682-1622).

Marian Bernice Gerwing

August 12, 1933 - June 20, 2011

It is with great sadness that the family of Bernice Gerwing, of Lake Lenore passed away at the age of 77, on June 20, 2011. Bernice was born to George and Mary (nee Kurtenbach) Hackl at St. Benedict, the 8th child of 11. Bernice took her education at St. Benedict School. Following that she did domestic jobs in the community. Little did she know that this part of her life would prepare her for her career as a wife and mother of eight children. It was at a dance in Middle Lake that she met the love of her life Daniel Gerwing. After a two year courtship they were married at the Old St. Benedict R.C. Church on October 15, 1952. Together they began their life on a farm in the Lake Lenore area. They were blessed with eight children. Dan decided to have a career change and in 1961 they moved into the town of Lake Lenore. Bernice continued to produce a large vegetable garden for survival and enjoyment. She loved flowers and all the beautiful birds they attracted. Bernice was an excellent cook and would create many delicious dishes with love for her family. Her overnight buns recipe has been passed on to her children and grandchildren. Her pie recipe also provided a perfect way to end a perfect meal. She did share that recipe with Dan who had taken over the job of “pie maker”. She was very active in the St. Anthony’s CWL for many years and served as president for one term. All domestic duties put aside, Bernice’s love was people. She truly was a people person. Her home was always open and she always made time to care and share with anyone who needed to talk or just have a cup of coffee. It was through Dan and Bernice’s involvement in an organization of special friends that they were able to minister help and support to many young couples and individuals around the area. She loved everyone unconditionally and accepted everyone for who they were and where they were in their lives. Bernice was always very encouraging and supportive, especially to her children. She was very proud of her family’s accomplishments. The best word to describe Bernice would be “encourager”. Bernice had many special qualities we all enjoyed. Her soft, gentle, joyful personality will be missed by many. Bernice was predeceased by her parents George and Mary Hackl; three children: Audrey Hopfner (2011), Gerard Gerwing (1964) and Mark Gerwing (1954); three brothers and three sisters: Emma, Orville, Roger, Georgie, Madeline and Eileen. A Prayer Service was held on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. participants in the service were: scripture readers Erin tosh and Colleen Gerwing with Barry Gerwing sharing words of remembrance. The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. concelebrated by Fr. Richard Meidl O.S.B. and Fr. Andrew Britz. Participants in the mass were: cross bearer Elliot Hopfner, altar servers Grace Flaman, Jesse Flaman, Janaya Gerwing and Renee Gerwing, scripture readers Jeremy Holcomb and Christopher Holcomb, prayers of faithful Megan Vedress, gift bearers Andrea Linwall, Doshua Linwall and Mark Thoms, a duet was performed by Jessie Hopfner – Richardson and Jeremy Holcomb and memorial table attendants were: Annette Yeager, Shelly Kunz, Jane Ramler and Elizabeth Lemmerich. Honorary pallbearers were “All those who shared in Beatrice’s life”. Pallbearers were: Bernice’s grandchildren: Benjamin Haeusler, Melissa Edwards, Evrett Hopfner, John Vedress, Samantha Hopfner and Mickolle Thoms. Both services were held from St. Anthony’s R.C. Church Lake Lenore. Interment followed at St. Anthony’s R.C. Cemetery Lake Lenore. Memorial donations in Bernice’s memory may be directed to Calgary Full Gospel or LIFE Outreach International – 3rd World Humanitarian Aid. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to MALINOSKI & DANYLUIK FUNERAL HOME Humboldt 682-1622.

Tanice Pearson

February 11, 1958 – June 2, 2011

The family is very sadden to announce the sudden and unexpected death of Tanice Ann Pearson (nee Wittig), 53 years of Edmonton, AB passed away at her residence on Thursday, June 2, 2011. Tanice was born to Ted and Edna (nee Downey) Wittig on February 11, 1958 in Humboldt, SK. Tanis took all of her education in Humboldt. She then worked in the area for a short time. She then obtained here Medical Records Certification in Regina and in the early 80’s she moved to Edmonton and began working at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Medical Records where she continued to work till present. In her youth she was active in 4H and skating. She was a true Elvis fan she loved and followed his career throughout his life. Life presented Tanice with many challenges but she managed to always rise above them and was able to live a serene life for the past 2 Years. Later in life she enjoyed playing cards and sharing time with her friends playing bingo. Tanice was a very private person, but did cultivated many deep relationships at work with her co workers. Tanice will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her aunt and uncle and their families: Yvonne Dellezay and her sons, Merl Bryck and Murray (Lauressa) Bryck, all of Saskatoon; Eugene (Liz) Downey of Kelowna, BC; and by M.J. (Stub) Henning of Melfort a long time family friend. Tanice was predeceased by her mother Edna Wittig, brother Greg Wittig and her maternal grandparents Greg and Anna Downey. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. from Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home Hwy 5 East Humboldt. Funeral celebrant was Jenny Irwin and words of remembrance were given by, M.J. (Stub) Henning. Interment will follow at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery. Anne Daeger

January 11, 1920 - June 17, 2011

Anne Mary Daeger, 91 years of Muenster, SK passed away on Friday, June 17, 2011 at Humboldt District Hospital. Anne was born on Jan. 11, 1920 to Caspar and Barbara (nee Mueller) Daeger at home near Muenster, SK. Growing up, Anne attended school in the area, especially enjoying the Christmas concerts, sports days and the library, where she developed a lifelong interest in reading. She worked in various hospitals and obtained her certificate in practical nursing. During those years, she was active in the CWL, worked on the diocesan executive, and served as president of the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Auxiliary. In 1974, she moved to Saskatoon where she worked at the Army & Navy Department Store for over 13 years. While in Saskatoon, Anne was very active with the Pro-Life association and St. Paul’s Cathedral, singing in the choir for 12 years. Upon retiring in 1987, she returned to the farm at Muenster to live with her brother, Joe. She joined St. Peter’s Cathedral choir, was a member of the Spiritual Care Team at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and the CWL. She supported Carlton Trail Pro-Life, belonged to a card group and the German Club and enjoyed bowling with the seniors in the winter. Anne was fortunate to have been able to do some traveling over the years, enjoying a trip to Expo in Montreal in 1967 and to the United States many times to visit relatives. She was involved with horticulture, planting and lovingly tending to her lily garden, roses, and fruit trees. Anne is survived by her brother, Joseph Daeger of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt and many good neighbours and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Caspar and Barbara Daeger. The Prayer Service for Anne was held on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Muenster presided by Donna Lee Bergermann. Readers were Doreen Grace and Celine Wolsfeld and the eulogy was given by Dennis Korte. The Funeral Mass was offered on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Muenster, celebrated by Fr. Daniel Muyres, OSB. Others taking part in the mass were: music ministry-pianist Christy Waldner, organist Sheryl Korte, director Gail Rueve and St. Peter’s Cathedral Choir; cross bearer, Hugo Korte; readers, Rose Marie Buttinger and Agatha Rueve; intentions, Hugo Korte; gift bearers, Vivian Korte and Irene Szautner and memorial table attendants, Vyenda Korte and Celine Wolsfeld. An Honour Guard was formed by members of the St. Elizabeth Ladies Auxiliary and the CWL. Pallbearers were Ron Schreiner, Rene Grace, Harvey Szautner, Don Korte, Ron Frank and Dennis Korte. The Daeger Family stained glass window in St. Peter’s Cathedral was dedicated and blessed at the conclusion of the mass. Interment followed in St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Muenster. Memorial donations in Anne’s memory may be made to Carlton Trail Pro-Life or St. Peter’s Parish and/or Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Humboldt (306-682-1622).

Mary Koob

August 4, 1920 - May 15, 2011

Mrs. Mary Koob (nee Hofmann), 90 years, of St. Mary’s Villa Humboldt passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at her residence. Mary was born on August 4, 1920 in Humboldt to Joseph and Anna Hofmann (nee Loehr). She grew up on the family farm in the Muenster area and attended St. Frances School. Following her education Mary ventured out to Kamloops and obtained employment at a bakery, eventually she returned back to Saskatchewan and helped family and neighbours with domestic duties. It was at Con Hinz’s wedding that Mary met the love of her life, Anthony Koob. They were married on April 22, 1952 at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Muenster. Together they began their life in the Meacham area where they ran a grain farm close to the Koob homestead. Mary and Tony were blessed with four children. Mary loved to garden where she would spend hours attending to her vegetable and flower gardens. Mary’s specialties were her raspberries and potatoes. Later she got some chickens and decided to become an entrepreneur in the egg business, she had a regular sales route that went all the way to Saskatoon. Mary was very talented and was able to create wonderful dresses and outfits for the children. In her pastime she loved to read, knit, crochet and enjoy the sights and sounds of the birds. She loved to sing German Songs and in her younger years her and her sisters could be heard on radio singing on amateur hour, a major highlight of her life. Family and her faith were always important to her; she loved being surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Mary and Tony were fortunate to travel to Europe, Ontario, Alberta, BC, Nova Scotia and many places in Saskatchewan. In 1988 they moved into Humboldt and she continued to garden but on a smaller scale. She loved visiting and spending time with her neighbours and going to the Villa to bring cheer to the residents. Mary also enjoyed volunteering at the Humboldt Good Neighbour Store and delivering Meals On Wheels. In 2005 due to failing health Mary moved to the enriched housing section of St. Mary’s Villa where she adapted well and continued to visit and bring cheer to many. Mary’s gentle and kind personality will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years, Tony Koob of Humboldt; their four children and six grandchildren: Ronald (Carol) Koob and son, Jeffrey Koob, all of Kingston, ON; Jeanette (Rick) Wagner and daughter, Victoria Wagner, all of Ottawa, ON; Patricia (Fred) Kessler of Water Valley, AB and children, James (Chi) Kessler and Meagan Kessler, all of Calgary, AB; and Kenneth (Brenda) Koob and daughters, Katie Koob and Claire Koob, all of Cochrane, AB; five brothers and sisters: Julie Mattioli of Kamloops, BC, Rose Boltz of Midway, BC, Raymond (Millie) Hofmann of Muenster, Dorothy Hofmann and Jerome (Rita) Hofmann, both of Humboldt; brothers and sisters-in-law: Margaret Hofmann of Muenster, Leona Boyle of Lucknow, ON, Clement Koob of Saskatoon, Louise Stang of Wilkie, Louis (Mearl) Koob of Peterson, Francis (Rose) Koob of Cold Lake, AB, Cecelia (Mike) McGrath of Calgary, Daniel Loehr of Watson and by numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Anna Hofmann; step-mother, Mary Hofmann (nee Zimmerman); brothers and sisters: Caroline (Bernard) Knittig, George Hofmann, Joe (Margaret) Hofmann and Clara Koob; brothers and sisters-in-law: Tino Mattioli, Dan Boltz, Stella Loehr, Danny (Helen) Koob, and Ray Boyle. A Prayer Service was held on Friday, June 17, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. presided by Jim Wasserman. Others taking part in the service were: scripture readers, Joe Hofmann and Sr. Colette Kaller O.S.U., organist, Sheryl Korte with vocalists, Anita Renneberg, Myrna Britz and Gail Rueve. Words of remembrance were shared by Carol Koob. The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. concelebrated by Fr. Emile April and Fr. Daniel Muyres O.S.B. Others taking part in the mass were: cross bearer, Audrey Swinamer, scripture readers, Juanite Hawkins and Louella Pethrick, prayers of the faithful, Noreen Strueby, music ministry, pianist, Sharon Guina, St. Peter’s Cathedral Choir, soloist, Rosalie Brandl and urn bearer, Ron Koob. An honour guard was formed by St. Augustine CWL, Humboldt. Honorary Pallbearers were “All those who shared in Mary’s life”. Both services were held from St. Peter’s Cathedral Muenster. Interment followed at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Cemetery Muenster. Memorial donations in Mary’s memory may be directed to the St. Peter’s Restoration Fund or St. Mary’s Villa Foundation. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to MALINOSKI & DANYLUIK FUNERAL HOME Humboldt, SK 682-1622.
