Mary Hagen
November 25, 1930 - August 26, 2011
Mrs. Mary Hagen, age 80 of St. Mary’s Villa Humboldt passed away peacefully at her residence on Friday, August 26, 2011. Mary was born on November 25, 1930 to Andrew and Mary (nee Rutchuck) Nicholat in the Fosston District. She took her education at Mallard School and then began working at the Wadena Bakery, a job she excelled in and little did she know this job would expand her talents as she raised eight children. On June 8 1952 she married Raymond Hagen. Together, they began a mixed farm on the land Raymond’s grandfather previously owned in the Rose Valley area. She was a very active partner in the day to day operations of the farm. Mary always made time for company and usually on a daily basis would have someone sitting at the kitchen table sharing stories. They were blessed with one daughter and seven sons, so needlessly to say she produced large vegetable and fruit gardens. These gardens were used for necessity and meditation where she would escape and enjoy some quiet spiritual times. Mary was a natural homemaker and taking on the role of domestic engineer came very easy. She loved to cook and that showed in her delicious dishes she would create that filled the house with wonderful aroma for the children to remember including the 48 loaves of bread she would bake on a weekly basis. Preparing the Ukrainian traditional meals for Christmas and Easter brought her much pleasure as her family would sit around the large table and enjoy her cooking. Mary was a very strong hard working woman who wasn’t afraid to get dirty, but when it was time to be seen in the public she always presented herself with elegance and beauty. She would make sure not a hair was out of place and her lipstick was on. In 1994 Raymond and Mary retired to Muenster where she continued to enjoy her domestic duties. Due to failing health Mary had to move to St. Mary’s Villa where she resided until her passing. Mary was predeceased by her parents Andrew and Mary Nicholat; brothers and sister: Fred (Mary) Nicholat, Bill (Emily) Nicholat, John Nicholat, Nick (Anne) Nicholat and Anne (John) Pawluik; and brother and sisters-in-law Paul Fedirko, Clare Petrie, Norma Holon and Jeanette Elliot. A Public Visitation was held on Monday, August 29, 2011 from 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home. A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. from Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home Hwy 5 East Humboldt. Officiated by, Jenny Irwin. Others taking part in the service were: organist, Pauline Besharah and words of remembrance were shared by Katelynn Hagen. Honorary pallbearers were “Mary’s grandchildren and great grandchildren”. Wilfred Hein
March 10, 1931 - August 22, 2011
The family is very saddened to announce that Mr. Wilfred Hein, 80 years, of Lanigan passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his residence on Monday, August 22, 2011. Wilfred was born on March 10, 1931 to Ferdinand and Nathalia (nee Rucks) Hein in Jansen. He attended Bieberdorf School where he obtained his grade eight education. He often spoke of his fond memories which included his classmates, teachers and ball games against Haliburton. Following his education he began farming with his parents and helped many neighbours in the area. Wilfred did take a trip to Ontario where he worked for one winter. He returned in the spring to meet the love of his life Ruth Epp and on October 22, 1952 they were wed at Jansen where they began their farming career and raised six children. Wilfred led an extremely busy life as a young man. They farmed in Jansen until 1966 and then they literally picked up their home and moved to Guernsey where Wilfred was employed by the Guernsey Artificial Breeders Co-op as well farming a quarter of land and milking a small herd of Ayrshires. He loved his Ayrshire cows and was a tireless promoter of the breed. He continued the Artificial Insemination business and built a family dairy. In 1989 Wilfred retired only to begin new hobbies such as gardening and touring. He was reacquainted with his guitar and spent time entertaining at many senior homes in the area. His special talent in composing music led Wilfred to making a memorable CD. At a very young age he confirmed his belief in Christ as his saviour and Lord at Zion Lutheran Church at Jansen and continued to be very active through out his life in the church and community. He was very active in developing the J.E.B. Community Center as well as the Hub in Lanigan. Nothing was as important as his family. Wilfred valued the time spent with his family but really cherished his grandchildren. He loved young people and often encouraged them to speak up and get involved. Since the new year Wilfred’s health declined and it was his wish, with the support of his family to be at home until Lord Jesus Christ called him to his eternal rest on Monday morning with his family at his side. A private family internment was held at Jansen Community Cemetery, Jansen. It was Wilfred’s wish that no memorial donations be made in his memory. Nick Yakowec
December 8, 1926 - August 21, 2011
Nick Yakowec was born December 8, 1926 at the family farm near Tarnopole, Saskatchewan, a son of Anne (Nee Zosiak) and Joseph Yakowec. Nick attended Hazel Lake School where he obtained his grade nine education. After school Nick worked at various jobs such as stooking and threshing. Nick and his Dad bought a threshing machine so they could do custom work.
The family moved to the Waterhen district where Nick bought 80 acres of farmland and built his first home, a two-room house nestled in the trees. He planted more spruce trees to have some green and to provide a wind break for the long winters.
On November 7, 1953 he married a sweet little lady from Carmel, SK, Ann Krysa. Their marriage produced six children who were an immense help on the family farm. They outgrew the little two-room house and moved to the Crystal Springs area. The family moved to Nick’s parents’ log home when his parents retired and moved to Prince Albert. Then in 1966 they purchased the house where Nick spent the remainder of his years. Nick liked animals and had tried his hand at raising sheep, chickens, geese, pigs and cows. The last big farm operation was the dairy operation where they milked around 30 cows. They sold that operation in 1980 and just grain farmed and raised pigs after that. The farm slowly decreased in size until there was only his pets, his favourite cats and dogs that he loved.
Nick was a man with a great sense of humour and he was extremely musically talented. He could play almost any instrument by ear. At one point he had a family band going and we all played a different instrument. Nick loved baseball, he played in school and then he taught all his kids to play. We would have family baseball games on Sunday afternoons, with neighbouring kids and other friends. Dad loved pitching and not many people could hit off him! Nick was very mechanical, innovative and creative, he could repair almost anything! He was generous with his time and talents and did numerous repairs for neighbors and friends. Nick’s other interest was antiques, you could tell by the accumulation in his yard. He never threw anything away, he always said, “you never now when you are going to need that.”
Dad lived the life he wanted….his intention was to only leave the farm in one way! Nick was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Anne Yakowec and his infant brother Michael. Nick will be fondly remembered and missed by his wife Ann Yakowec, his children: Joseph Yakowec of Carmel; Darlene and John Jabs of Lockwood, Sk. And children Mark, Adam, Lynn and Nova, Loretta; Paul and Penny Yakowec of Wadena and his children Jonathon, Crystal (Destiny great granddaughter), Linda, Ben, Kathy; Eileen and James Schur of Lanigan and daughter Alexis, Caroline and Murray Krenn of Kelowna B.C., and daughters Nicole and Ashley, Ralph and Joanne Yakowec of Birch Hills and children Ashley and Anthony (Deziree, Thomas and Jake) Krystle and Tyler. He is also survived by one sister Mary Kolendreski and her children Leon, Dianne and Danny and their families and one nephew Mervin Pakulak. An informal Celebration of Life was held on Friday, August 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from Kinistino Half Century Club with an open mic and everyone shared their memories of Nick while enjoying fellowship and refreshments. Elsie Block
December 9, 1921 - August 20, 2011
The family is sad to announce that Mrs. Elsie Block, of LeRoy, passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the age of 89. Elsie was born on December 9, 1921 in Wartega, Poland to Gustav and Saraphine (Zacharias) Adam. She obtained her education while living in Poland. Elsie was married to Gustav Block in 1937 and to William Block in 1947. She was blessed with three daughters and one son. In 1951 Elsie, William and their three daughters, Agnes, Ingrid and Gerdy came to Canada. Werner was born after they arrived in Canada. Elsie and William lived in the Jansen area for five years and, then in 1956 they moved to the Drake area and ran a mixed farming operation until 1971, when they moved North of Jansen. In 1976 they retired and moved to Lanigan. Elsie and Bill had numerous janitorial jobs to keep them busy. In 2003 they moved to Humboldt. William passed away in 2006 and in 2010 Elsie moved to Evergreen Country Home in LeRoy. Elsie loved to bake and knit, creating many pairs of slippers for each family member. She always planted a garden along with many flowers, especially petunias. She was proud of being a good homemaker and a gracious hostess. Her home was always the center of celebrations for her family filled with wonderful aromas of her cooking and baking. The hum of laughter and visiting warmed her heart and truly made her house a home! She fed everyone very well and always included care packages as everyone departed. She was very generous with hugs for everyone and made a special effort to keep in touch with all of the family and her many friends. Elsie had a wonderful sense of humour. She was very devoted to her church and her faith carried her through life. Elsie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her four children and their families: GERDY Kellman of Barbados and family Randy Muller of Kelowna, and his children Ashley (Jed) Robinson and their child Charlie, of Calgary, and Gaileen Muller of Edmonton; AGNES (Bill) Hamilton of Calgary and their children Curtis Nickason of Edmonton and Cory (Lorie) Nickason and their children Brock and Jake, of Saskatoon; INGRID (Ernie) Doerksen of Winnipeg; WERNER Block of Jansen and his family, Jennifer Block of Regina and Sarah Block of Waterloo, Ontario; two brothers, Adolf (Ruth) Adam, of Abbotsford, BC and Rueben (Magda) Adam, of Germany; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Elsie was predeceased by her husbands, Gustav and William, her parents Gustav and Saraphine, daughter-in-law, Kathryn Bella-Block; 5 sisters, Alena, Matilda, Helen, Ida, and Ruth; and two brothers, August and William. A funeral service for Elsie was held at Tempel Baptist Church, Jansen, SK on Thursday August 25, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Officiated by Pastor Abe Klassen. Others taking part in the service were: pianist Eileen Block, memorial table attendant Judy Bach, ushers Jack Robson and Alfred Back. Words of remembrance were given by Jennifer Block. Honorary Pallbearers were “All those who shared in Elsie’s life”. Active pallbearers were Curtis Nickason, Cory Nickason, William Lick, Bill Block, Dave Pollock and Donovan Block. Interment followed at the Esk South Cemetery. Joyce Laing
May 6, 1918 - August 12, 2011
Mrs. Joyce Laing, 93 years of Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Friday, August 12, 2011. Joyce was born on May 6, 1918 in Regina to Richard Montgomery and Mary Rebecca Bennett. As a young child, she moved with her family to Conquest, where she received all of her education, graduating at the age of 16. She took classes at the University of Edmonton in the College of Commerce for a while and when finally old enough, enrolled in nursing at St. Paul’s Hospital. She graduated from St. Paul’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. On July 2, 1942, she married Eric W. H. Laing, a long time school mate from Conquest. The couple lived in many different locations through the years - Prince Rupert, Portage la Prairie, Lemsford, Quill Lake, Spiritwood and Prince Albert to name a few. Throughout the years, Joyce worked in health care wherever they were living. While living in Quill Lake she was the Matron at the Quill Lake Hospital and delivered many babies over the years. She attained her Diploma of Public Health in 1965 and worked as a Public Health nurse until retiring at the age of 65. She was truly a scholar, loved reading and taking classes. Joyce always put other people’s needs above her own, reaching out to help others whenever and wherever she was able to. She was an active volunteer in the many communities in which she lived, giving selflessly of her time for many groups and organizations including Eastern Star, Royal Purple, PA Museum, PA Wildlife Society, Council of Canadians, Alzheimer’s Society, Hearing Impaired, Meals on Wheels and UCW. Joyce was an excellent leader and under her guidance many projects were born and completed. She enjoyed leisure time at their cabin at Chitek Lake, traveling, gardening and especially spending time with her ever growing family. In 2005, she moved to the Quill Lake area and in March 2007, Joyce became a resident at Quill Plains Centennial Lodge. Joyce will be lovingly remembered by her three children, eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren: PENNY (Tom) Lowes of Quill Lake and family, Brent (Melody) Lowes and children Nathan and Hannah of Quill Lake; Rebecca Welsh (Rocky Ingram) of Saskatoon and children Donovan, Victoria, Becky and Tyler; and Thomas (Candace) Lowes and son Jacob of Canora; ERIC (Linda) Laing of Regina and family, Tania (Jerrod) Turgeon and children Matthew, Drew and Grace; and Cindy (Chris) Patenaude and children McKenzie, Chloe and Eve, all of Regina; and WILLIAM (Brenda) Laing of St. Albert, AB and family, Erin Laing (Beth) of Regina, Sarah (Josh) Semotiuk and children Judge and Ruby of Edmonton, AB; and Daley Laing of Edmonton; and by nieces and nephews. Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Rebecca Bennett; husband, Eric Laing; son, Richard (in infancy); brothers, Alvin (Edith), Frank (Eda) and sister, Vera (Mac). The Funeral Service for Joyce was held on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Wesley United Church, Quill Lake, SK, officiated by Pastor Brian Unger. A Private Family Interment followed in the Quill Lake Cemetery. Pallbearers were Daley Laing, Jerrod Turgeon, Chris Patenaude, Brent Lowes, Thomas Lowes, and Rocky Ingram. Flora Gjerde
October 12, 1919 - August 1, 2011
Mrs. Flora Gjerde, 91 years, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2011 at the Watson Health Center. Flora was born on October 12, 1919 the 11th child out of 15 to John and Albena (nee Danis) Rondeau in the Wadena District. She attended Bradgate School. Following her education she remained in the area helping her mother and other neighbours with domestic duties. On December 7, 1939 she married Olger Gjerde at Dahlton. Together they began their farming career in the Nora area. Flora was very active in the day to day operations of the family farm. Together they raised five children. She enjoyed gardening and the domestic duties of running a home but the art of being a chef was her favourite, she was known for her excellent cooking skills. She enjoyed participating in curling and ball. She was a member of the “Nora Sunshine Circle” a group of ladies that would meet regularly. Her caring, compassionate and nurturing personality showed through as she helped others through difficult times, including family and fostering children. After the premature death of Olger in 1968 Flora moved to Saskatoon where she worked for the Family Service Bureau in the Home Care division. Later she expanded on her cooking talents by working in the catering business at hotels and the Saskatoon Airport. Following this she became a cook with the oil rigs in Alberta and the Territories, where she gained respect and furthered her natural ability to help others. Again she was very well known for her gift as a very good cook! At the age of 64 she retired and continued to be very active socially, enjoying dancing and bowling where she won many trophies in Western Canada for high scores. In 2006 Flora moved to Naicam to be closer to her family and she adapted quickly and loved her independent life in Naicam. Due to failing health she moved to Evergreen Country Home in LeRoy on March 1, 2011. The family is very grateful for their sister Yvonne for all her time and special care given to their mother. Lauretta Reinhart
February 8, 1918 - September 25, 2011
The death of Lauretta Reinhart, 93 years of Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake occurred on Sunday, September 25, 2011. Lauretta was born on February 8, 1918 in the St. Benedict area to Anton and Mary (nee Hatzl) Reinhart. She grew up on the family farm and attended Rock Valley School. Lauretta and her older sister Lena helped their mother with the house work but also worked just as hard helping their father with the farming duties. They were kept busy each fall, stooking and hauling bundles to help with the threshing. Lauretta also enjoyed making patchwork quilts and doing fancy needlework. In the winter months, she often would do house cleaning and painting for other families in the area. Lauretta and a couple of her siblings lived and worked on the farm with her parents throughout their lives, continuing the farming lifestyle even after their parent’s deaths. As she advanced in age, she eventually made her home at Bethany Pioneer Village in Middle Lake, first in Birch Manor and then a few years ago she moved over to Aspen Manor where she lived until the present time. Lauretta was the last surviving member of her family. She will be remembered by numerous nieces and nephews. Lauretta was predeceased by her parents, Anton and Mary Reinhart; and her 10 siblings: Lena, Joe, Oswald, Benedict, Frances, Nickalaus, Roman, Dora, Herman and Clara. The Funeral Mass for Lauretta was held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, St. Benedict, celebrated by Fr. Denis Phaneuf. Interment followed in the St. Benedict R.C. Parish Cemetery. Memorial donations in Lauretta’s memory may be made to Bethany Pioneer Village.
