WILSON - Violet M. 1916 - 2002 Violet M. Wilson of Calgary passed away at home on June 10, 2002 at the age of 85 years. Violet was born September 15, 1916 in Pincher Creek, AB. She resided in Coleman, AB for her early years. She moved to England with the Canadian Army Regiment No. W155058 in the Women's Corp. and served in London during the Battle of Britain. Violet lived a full and vital life filled with friends, family, travel and love of life. She was youthful in thought and desires. She will be dearly missed. Violet is survived by a niece Ann Carr (Larry), grandniece Christine Carr, grandnephew William Carr; nephew Malcolm Walker (Denise), grandnephews, Ian and Stuart Walker; and cousin Margaret Caton. McINTYRE - Lilly Ethel Lilly Ethel McIntyre (nee Bjorklund), born on October 15, 1906 at Hampden Township, Minnesota, passed away on October 17, 2002 at Drumheller, Alberta. Lilly came to the farming area of Instow, Saskatchewan with her parents, three sisters and a brother, where some of the Bjorklund family still resides. Lilly was one of eight children and was the last remaining Bjorklund. Lilly lived longer than anyone in her family right to her great-great-grandparents. On September 17, 1926 Lilly was united in marriage to Daniel McIntyre at Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. Lilly and Dan moved to Drumheller in 1926 and resided there until her passing. Lilly left five children to mourn her, Margaret (Halvorson), Helen (Paul Meleshko), Florence (Frank Palmer), Doug (Sandra McIntyre), and Diane (Simpson). Lilly was predeceased by her Husband Dan and children, Gordon, Milferd, Robert and Ethel (Durnford). Lilly has twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, one brother-in-law and many nephews and nieces to mourn her passing. Services will be held at St. Anthony's Church, Drumheller, on Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at 11:00 a.m., Father Daniel Stevenot, Celebrant. RICHARDSON - James Andrew 1919 - 2002 James Andrew Richardson passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital on Wednesday, October 16, 2002, at age 83 years. Jim is survived by his daughter Marilyn Head of Mesa, Arizona; his son Jim Richardson Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska; as well as four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Jim was born and grew up in Bakersfield, California. He graduated from Stanford University with a degree in chemical engineering and began working in the oil industry with Bechtel Corporation. While working with Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville he met and married Mardine Finnell. They were married for fifty-six years until her death in 2000. The family lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Dallas before moving to Calgary in 1957 when Jim and Phillips Petroleum associate Charles Barry opened the consulting firm of Barry & Richardson. Jim was a well-known figure in Calgary's oil scene for many years and designed numerous gas processing and refining plants throughout Alberta and other parts of the world. He operated Barry & Richardson's Calgary office until the company was sold to Parsons Engineering in 1972. In addition to his work as a chemical engineer, Jim had many hobbies and activities. He enjoyed a lifelong hobby of raising and propagating orchids. He was one of the initial members of the International Tale and Tackle Society, a group that shared annual fishing jaunts for over forty years. Jim raised and hunted with Brittany spaniels and produced three field trial champions over the years. Jim is a past president of the Calgary Pointing Dog Club and was awarded the club's first honorary lifetime membership in 1995 for his contributions to dog trialing. An interest in raising exotic cattle led Jim to a side career as a cattle rancher in the 1960's and 1970's. He operated JaMar Exotic Cattle and owned a ranch near Nanton. Jim was a member of the Earl Grey Golf Club and a very enthusiastic golfer. Golf, Bridge and other social events with Earl Grey friends were an important part of his life. Jim will be greatly missed by his family and friends. ROOP - Muriel 1928 - 2002 With great sadness we announce that Mrs. Muriel Roop, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully at the Rockyview General Hospital, on Thursday, October 17, 2002, after a lengthy illness. Besides her loving husband Michael Roop, she leaves to mourn, her three daughters, Debbie Hunt (Brian), Jo-Ann Horan (Larry), and Susan Grimshaw (Grant); and her two loving sisters, Margaret Horton and Ruby Kirkwood. She will also be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Jennifer, Philip, Kevin, Sean, Trevor, and Brett; as well as many nieces and nephews. Muriel was born in Larne, North Ireland on December 19, 1928. After graduating from Leeds in England, she immigrated to Canada to pursue her nursing career and raise her family. She had a great love of life and is best remembered for her kindness and generosity, which touched all she met. Muriel dedicated her life to helping others, be it family, friends, patients, Girl Guides, or children in the Turks and Caicos. SHOEBOTTOM - Nellie Maurine (Hunsperger) Must in death your daylight finish? My sun sets to rise again. - Robert BrowningNellie Shoebottom died peacefully, comfortably, and "with all her marbles", October 15, 2002, at her residence in Edmonton. The sixth child of Cora and Charles Wilson of Missouri, Nellie was born at Airdrie in 1906 shortly after the family's immigration to Canada. They homesteaded in the "Fallen Timber" area (near Cremona) before moving to a farm closer to Didsbury in the fall of 1910. Nellie went to the rural school at Rosebud, Grades Nine to Eleven at Didsbury High School, then Normal School in Calgary in 1923 to 1924. She taught in one-room schools at Enchant and Onoway before returning to Rosebud, where she taught until her marriage in 1934 to William John Shoebottom, who barbered in Olds from the early 1930's until his death in 1972. Nellie and Bill raised three children in Olds, where both were very active members of the community. Nellie returned to teaching when her younger son started school in 1956, and retired (unwillingly) when she turned sixty-five. While at "Normal," Nellie signed up with John Barnett to help build the Alberta Teachers' Alliance, and was awarded an honourary Life Membership in the Alberta Teachers' Association in the 1970's. In 1980, she eloped with a childhood friend, Nyle Hunsperger, and had another happy marriage until Nyle's passing twelve years later. Predeceased by her parents, Cora Browning (1911) and Charles Wilson (1945), sisters, Pauline (who died in infancy, 1893), Mona Deadrick (1964), Amy Wilson (1965), Lucy Sutherland (1993), Juanita St. Clair (2001), brothers, Ivan Wilson (1971), Dorris Wilson (1986), husbands, Bill Shoebottom (1972), Nyle Hunsperger (1992), son-in-law Michael Martyn (1984), son Dean Charles (1993). Survived by daughter Donna Martyn of Edmonton; and son Dash Shoebottom of R.R.2, Kingman; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. Nellie moved to Edmonton and has lived there since 1993, but Olds was always "home." Many thanks to the residents and staff of Canterbury Manor (1993 to 1998) and of Laurier House, where she has been lovingly cared for since 1999. No Service. SQUIRRELL - Henry 1909 - 2002 Henry Squirrell of Calgary, passed away at the Beverly Care Centre (Midnapore) on Saturday, October 19, 2002 at the age of 92 years. Henry was born on November 9, 1909 in London, England. He immigrated to Canada in 1912 and married Frances Hogben in 1935. Henry served in World War II with the Canadian Armed Forces for five years. He was also an elder of the People's Church in Toronto for over thirty years and a devout man of God. Henry is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Toni Squirrell of Victoria, B.C., and Ken and Wendy Squirrell of Calgary; as well as eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and a brother Ernie Squirrell of Parry Sound, ON. He was predeceased by his wife Frances, in 1976. STERLING - Llewellyn "Bud" 1924 - 2002 Llewellyn "Bud" Sterling of Calgary, passed away on October 19, 2002 at the age of 78 years. Bud was born on March 21, 1924 in Acme, AB, and raised on the family farm in Carstairs, AB. He was a mechanic and welder and owned several service stations over the years. He operated a poultry farm for ten years at Crossfield and was a member of No. 284 Royal Canadian Legion and the Huntington Pioneers Club.
