Ruth, Albert Erland
April 04, 2002

Mr. Albert Erland Ruth, age 75 years passed away peacefully in hospital with family at his side on Saturday, March 23, 2002. Born in Kenora, Ontario, Albert was raised and educated in Fort Frances. A veteran of World War II, he was employed in the early years by Ontario Minnesota Pulp & Paper mill in the log drive. He later worked as a truck driver at Caland Ore in Atikokan, moving to Thunder Bay upon retirement. Albert enjoyed playing pool and cribbage at the Herb Carrol Centre in his later years. He also served as a volunteer for several years at the Herb Carrol Centre. His most treasured times were spent at the family cabin on Burchell Lake. Predeceased by his wife Mamie in May of 2001, by his parents Robert and Beda Maria Ruth, brother Alvin “Rudy” and sister Ethel. Albert is survived by step children Audrey (Jim) Parres, Thunder Bay, Kenneth (Candace) Crawford, Portage la Prairie, Mb., 7 grandchildren 10 great grandchildren, a sister Hjordis Vickstrom, Lulea, Sweden, son Allan McDowell & daughter Sandra Neilson of Regina, Sk., sister-in-laws Rusty Ruth, Zelma Phillips and Margaret Phillips as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In keeping with Albert’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Friends so wishing may make donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario or the charity of your choice.

VIRTANEN

Mr. Veikko Gabriel Virtanen, age 80 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away in St. Joseph’s Hospital on Monday, March 25, 2002 following a brief illness.
Born in Luopio, Finland, he came to Canada and Port Arthur in 1952. Veikko was a carpenter by trade, and was employed by Barnett-McQueen for twenty-seven years, retiring in 1986. Veikko is survived by his wife Impi; one son Olavi; two sisters and other relatives in Finland. he was predeceased by his parents; four sisters and three brothers.
Cremation has taken place and a Private Graveside Service was held on Thursday, April 4th at Riverside Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Jari Lahtinen of Hilldale Lutheran Church. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Veikko’s memory to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street.

Walters, Elsie
April 05, 2002

Mrs. Elsie Walters age 63 years, resident of Thunder Bay, died in TBRH McKellar Site on Thursday April 4, 2002. Born and raised in Fort Frances she moved to Fort William in her twenties and has resided here since. Elsie had worked as a health care aide at Grandview Lodge for over twenty years before ill health forced her to retire. She took great pride in caring for her home and garden and she especially loved caring for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Elsie enjoyed folk-art painting, gab sessions on the phone and she always loved a joke. She is survived by her children Sheryl and her husband Jerry Ward, Angela Krupper both of Thunder Bay, four grandchildren Tesh, Jessica, Tia and Tonya, three great grandchildren Devon, Tristian and Shayla. Nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. She was predeceased by her parents Jul and Ida Moen and brother William Moen. Cremation has taken place and funeral services will be held on Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Kowalchuk of St. Elizabeteh’s Church officiating. Interment will follow in St. Andrew’s Cemetery. If friends desire memorials to the Kidney Foundation or the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
A tree will be planted in memory of Elsie Walters in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual Dedication service Sunday, June 29, 2003

Grasse, Robert Joseph
May 23, 2002

The family announces with sorrow the death of Robert Joseph Grasser, (Uncle Bob) at the Geraldton District Hospital on May 10, 2002 at the age of 90 years. Robert is predeceased by his mother & father and all of his brothers and sisters. Uncle Bob will be sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Uncle Bob moved from Hearst, Ontario to Geraldton, Ontario in 1937 where he was initially employed at the Little LongLac Gold Mine. He then soon after began his career at the Department of Lands and Forests (MNR) as a government check scaler, dedicated and a pioneer in his own right; where he remained until his retirement. Following Uncle Bob's wishes, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Great-grandfather of Travis, Ashley, Jamie & Kristen. Funeral Service at St. Johns Anglican Church, Havelock Thursday at 2:00 pm. Reverend David Wainwright & Reverend Naomi Miller officiating. Alto, ronald Martin
May 27, 2002

Mr. Ron Alto, aged 56 years, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2002 at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital – McKellar Site after a brief illness. Born on April 18, 1946 in Sioux Lookout, son of Roy Alto and the late Dora Alto. He received his education in Fort William at Selkirk High School. Ron was employed with Patterson Shipping recently serving on the Cartier DOC and prior to that with Great Lakes Paper Company. He was a member of the Seafarers Union for 27 years. His main interests were family and friends and volunteer work for the Seaman’s Mission. Also, Ron was an avid sports enthusiast. Survived by father Roy at home, sisters Lynn Kislock and Lorna (Boyd) Nyberg and nieces Kimberly, Julia and Sarah. Predeceased by mother Dora (1996). Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 from 7 – 9 p.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home, 226 S. Syndicate Avenue. Funeral services for Mr. Ronald Martin Alto will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Jenkens Funeral Home with Rev. Ed Swayze officiating. Services will be complete in the chapel. Memorial donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

TAPANILA, REINO JACOB

Born Nov. 11, 1912 Dunblane, Sask. passed away May 22, 2002. Survived by Selvi, his wife of 63 years. Sons Tom and Ted (Vivienne). Grandchildren Ted and Margaret, 4 great grandchildren, sisters Ethel, Violet, sister-in-law Martha. Cremation. No service by request. Thanks to staff at Central Park Lodge for their loving care.

Konopski, Emil
May 28, 2002

Mr. Emil Konopski, age 80 years of Thunder Bay passed away on Monday, May 27, 2002 at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital McKellar Site after a lengthy illness. Emil was born, raised and educated in Fort William. He joined the Army and served overseas with the Lanmark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment for three years. When he returned he worked at Great Lakes Paper Co. for over 40 years as a millwright. Emil was known for his "Green Thumb" and enjoyed his gardening and greenhouse.
Emil is survived by his wife of 55 years Anne, daughters Pat (Wayne) Osipenko and Mary Jane (Greg) Hogan, grandchildren Mandy Osipenko (Shane), Dallas (Danielle) and Josh Hogan, great granddaughter Madeleene Boucher- Hogan and brother Adam. Many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Emil was predeceased by his parents, sister Betty and brothers Ken and Carl.
Funeral services for Mr. Emil Konopski will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday May 31, 2002 at the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore Street at James celebrates Fr. Bohdan Bilinsky officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, May 30 from 6-9 p.m. with panachyda being offered at 7 p.m. in the chapel. Cremation and interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens at a later date. Donations to the Salvation Army or the Care Beyond Compare Campaign would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Poulter, Frederick Freeman
May 28, 2002

Mr. Frederick Freeman Poulter, aged 87 years, of Thunder Bay passed away after a short illness at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital – McKellar Site on Tuesday, May 28, 2002. Born in Fort William, Ontario on November 14, 1914, Fred served overseas with the 18th Field Battery from 1941 until 1946. Upon returning to Canada he worked for Canada Customs until retirement. He was active in The Business Men’s Health Club and the YMCA. In his later years, he was an enthusiastic tennis player receiving an honorary lifetime membership in the Thunder Bay Community Tennis Centre. He spent many summers at Loon Lake surrounded by family. Fred was predeceased by his wife Francis in 1973. Fred will be sadly missed by his children, Fred (Susan), Larry, Linda Mills (Alan), Valerie Zeleny (Dan) and grandchildren, Erin Mantis, Scott, Tyler and Robert Poulter, Lindsey and Jesse Poulter, Theresa Dufault, Victoria Mills, Daniel and Cady Zeleny. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2002 from 7 – 9 p.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home. Funeral services for Mr. Frederick Poulter will be held on Friday, May 31, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home, 226 S.
Syndicate Avenue, with Rev. Bert Vancook officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Fred Poulter Sr. Memorial Award, c/o Student Finance Office, Confederation College, Box 398, Thunder Bay, Ontario, P7C 4W1 would be appreciated by the family.

Brian Kenneth Proud 40 years passed away suddenly in Calgary Alta. of a heart attack while attending school on May 28th, 2002. Brian was born icon in Hanover, Ontario on June 13th 1961. He attended Pine Street School and Hammarskjold High School in Thunder Bay. He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years Vicky, daughters Athena and Aurora of Mirror, Alberta. His parents Marlene and Elgin Proud, sister Cheryl (Nephews Andrew and Connor. Brothers Brad, Bruce (Kim) and Brent (Diana) and nephew Jesse. Grandmother Impi Karila all of Thunder Bay. His mother-in-law, father-in-law and brother-in-law of South Western Ontario. Also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in Thunder Bay and South Western Ontario. Predeceased by Grandfather Lauri Karila, grandmother Minnie Etsell and Grandfather Beverly Proud. Aunts Kathryn Proud and Delza Hunt and Great Grandparents.

Koukkula, Henry
May 31, 2002

Mr. Henry Roukkula, age 84 years, resident of 106 Kenwood Avenue, passed away suddenly in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital (General) on Wednesday, May 29, 2002.
Born and raised in Port Arthur, he attended Port Arthur Technical and Commercial High School. During the Second World War, Henry served in England as an Air Force mechanic, and upon his return, married Margaret Johnston in 1947. A mechanic by trade, he was employed by Gibson Motors and latterly, at Salonen’s Service on Algoma Street for many years until his retirement. Henry enjoyed fishing and hunting, was a charter member of the Voyageurs Fish and Game Club, and he especially enjoyed his family, grandchildren, and the sauna which his son built him. In his later years, he enjoyed having coffee at Intercity with his friends.
Henry is survived by his son Bill (Lynda); granddaughter Jennifer; grandson Bill (Kim) of Sioux Lookout; brother William (Doris) of Thunder Bay. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives here in Finland. Henry was predeceased by his parents; wife Margaret in 1976.
Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 4th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Matthew Diegel of Our Saviours' Lutheran Church. Private interment to take place in the Family Plot - Riverside Cemetery at a later date. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Henry’s memory to the Canadian Diabetes. Association, and to the Royal Canadian Legion Bldg Fund Branch #5

Lynch, Michael
May 31, 2002

Mr. Michael Lynch age 54 years of Thunder Bay, passed away suddenly at home on Thursday evening, May 30, 2002. Born in Alliston ,Ontario, Michael has lived here in Thunder Bay for the past 20 years. He was employed in the Public Relations Department. at Abitibi, spent some time in Joe Commuzzi’s office as a Special Assistant, and latterly as a staff writer for Northern Ontario Business. He enjoyed furniture refinishing, and gardening. Michael was very active in the Liberal Party, and had a passion for Politics. He is survived by his wife Laura, daughter Erin of Haliburton, a son Daniel of Winnipeg, 3 grandsons, Seamus, Brenton, and Keith Brothers and sisters, Gene, Joe, John, Sheila, and Mary. Numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive. Predeceased by his parents Terrance and Eileen Lynch, brother Dave Lynch. As per Michael’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. An open house to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday afternoon, June 04, 2002 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at 24 Machar Avenue.
In lieu of flowers donations to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

Adams, Harold
May 31, 2002

Mr. Harold Francis Adams, age 71 years of Thunder Bay, passed away after a brief illness at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, Port Arthur Site on Thursday, May 30th, 2002. Born in Gold River, Nova Scotia on August 12, 1930, he grew up in Nova Scotia until starting an apprenticeship and settling in Thunder Bay in 1969. Harold was a member of Sheet Metal Workers' Local 397 for 25 years, retiring in 1992. His retirement years were spent enjoying his family and having coffee with friends. Harold was predeceased by his wife Viola in 1995 and will be sadly missed by daughter Peggie Tergie (Chris), Debra Medwid (Dwayne), sons Gary and Harold Jr. (Ruby). Also missing him are his special girls Jasmin Clair, Kendra Tergie and special friend Rosemary McLean. A special thanks to the girls at the Chemo Unit and the nurses of the 3rd floor IMCU, we appreciate all your kindness. Funeral services for the late Harold Adams will be held on Monday, June 3rd at 1:30 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 North Court Street with Rev. Canon John Jordan officiating.
Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sargent Chapel from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday. As expressions of sympathy the family respectfully requests memorials to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation.
