James Switzer

James R. Switzer, 75, Salida, died Feb. 11, 2001, in Pueblo.
James was born May 18, 1925, in Denver, to Jim and Florence (Bratton) Cantril.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
James was united in marriage to Florence Atwood, Dec. 28, 1956, in South Dakota.
James worked in the civil service as a quality control inspector for military aircraft for many years.
He was a member of the Salida Elks Lodge, Sertoma and VFW Post 3820. At one time, he was involved with Meals on Wheels.
He was an outdoor enthusiast and especially enjoyed fly fishing and tying his own flies.
Switzer is survived by his wife, Florence Switzer, Salida; sons, John Moody, Albuquerque, N.M. and Robert (Susan) Moody, Middletown, Md.; daughters, Bonnie Blobaum, Salida and Norma Farley, Wheatland, Wyo.; brother, Ray (Jackie) Switzer, Denver; special cousin, Dorothy Sidener, Sapello, N.M.; niece, Leslie Haun, Denver; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m.- noon and 1-4:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Elks Laradon Hall or to the donor’s favorite charity through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Josephine Porco

Josephine Porco, 77, a lifelong resident of Salida, died Dec. 3, 2000, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Josephine was born Sept. 16, 1923, in Salida, to Tony and Agathea (Perri) Ciancio.
She was united in marriage to Dominic Porco on April 4, 1942, in Salida.
Josephine was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and she also did volunteer work for the Arthritis Foundation.
She is survived by her husband, Dominic Porco; sons, Ralph (Flora) Porco, Lanny (Bonnie) Porco and Donny (Julie) Porco, all of Salida; daughter, Mary Jane Cicero of Salida; brother Ralph Ciancio of Woodward, Okla.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Nicki Porco; daughter, Charlene Finney; brothers, Sam, Fred, John and Tony Ciancio; sisters, Carmina Anderson, Christine Poncie and Bessie Cardinelli.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Marie McManus

Marie McManus, 89, Salida, died Nov. 29, 2000, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Marie was born June 6, 1911, in Greeley, Neb., to Hugh and Blanch (Farrell) McManus.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers.
Mass of the Christian burial is set for 10 a.m. on Monday at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Salida.
Interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Delton L. Sparkman

Delton L. Sparkman, 40, formally of Leadville, died Nov. 24, 2000, at his home in Salida.
Sparkman was born May 27, 1960, in Okeechobee, Fla., to David and Lillian (Martinez) Sparkman.
A self-employed carpenter, Sparkman enjoyed running track, playing the trumpet, fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his son, Phillip Sparkman of Buena Vista; brothers, David Sparkman of Salida, Darrel (Loretta) Sparkman of Leadville and Larry (Shelly) Sparkman of Salida; sister, Melody (John) Sparkman of Leadville; parents, David and Lillian Sparkman of Salida and two grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 1-5 p.m. today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Mass of the Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salida. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Miles Rabas

Miles Rabas, 74, died Nov. 24, 2000, at his home, of cancer.
Miles was a Salida businessman and owner of Best Western Colorado Lodge for 28 years.
He was a member of Rotary, Elks, Old Goats and Temple Baptist Church
For years, Miles played Santa at the Rotary Christmas party. Rabas enjoyed sports and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Miles is survived by his wife, Gwen, of 52 years; son, Ken Rabas; daughter, Darlene (Bob) Rohrich; grandchildren, Joey, Kelli and Pat Rabas, Carrie (Peter) Anderson, Andy Rohrich, Brad (Tessa) Rohrich; three great-grandchildren.
Viewing is from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Tuesday, at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Temple Baptist Church, 509 F St., Salida.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Calvin Nachtrieb

Calvin Nachtrieb died June 18, 2001, in Queen Valley, Ariz.
He was born to Charles and Ethel Nachtrieb April 16, 1926, in Nathrop.
A lifelong resident of Chaffee County, he ranched north of Buena Vista and mined at Climax and the Black Cloud. He served on the board for the Buena Vista schools.
Mr. Nachtrieb is survived by his wife, Billee, Queen Valley, Ariz.; children, Stan Nachtrieb, Everett, Wash., Melvin (Glenda) Nachtrieb, Loveland, Calaine Ohmert, Lakewood and Scott (Lea) Nachtrieb, Highlands Ranch; step-children, Jere Ellenberger, Bloomfield, N.M., Teri (Wes) Jackson, Great Falls, Mont. and Mike (Cindy) Haworth, Absarokee, Mont.; sister, Ruben VanBuskirk, Buena Vista; brother, Chuck Nachtrieb, Mesa, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the family cemetery in Nathrop.

Robert C. Jenkins

Robert C. Jenkins, 78, Buena Vista, died May 31, 2001, as a result of a traffic accident near Nathrop.
He was born March 21, 1923, in Boxville, Ky., to Leonard and Rosella Jenkins.
Mr. Jenkins served in the Army, 11th Infantry, from December 1940 through November 1945.
He lived in Colorado Springs from 1952 to 1990, when he moved to Buena Vista.
He married Joyce MacAlmon June 28, 1985.
Mr. Jenkins worked as a gas installer/serviceman and was a volunteer fireman. He loved working in his garden and taking care of his yard.
He was a tinkerer who loved to come up with unique solutions for problems around the house. He loved to cook and always had a freezer full of food, unless he had given it all away.
Mr. Jenkins had fun taking his wife, Joyce, and dog, Widget, fishing — especially at Clear Creek Reservoir. He talked about how he got bargains when he went shopping and then turned around and gave them to the Arkansas Valley Christian Mission.
He especially loved the Buena Vista area and said he had always dreamed of living in such a place.
Mr. Jenkins is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughters, Donna Flynn and Ann Jenkins, both of Loveland; brothers, Ron Jenkins, Henderson, Ky. and Neel Jenkins, Morganfield, Ky.; sister, Marjorie Bohannon, Evansville, Ind.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Cornerstone Church, Buena Vista, Visitation was Monday at Runyan Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arkansas Valley Christian Mission, PO Box 4646, Buena Vista, 81211.
Arrangements are with Runyan Mortuary.

Eunice Taylor

Eunice Higgins Taylor, 85, Cotopaxi, died May 17, 2001, in Littleton.
She was born May 20, 1915, in Hillside, to Walter W. and Edna J. (Boyle) Higgins.
She was married to Leslie D. Taylor in October 1938 in Denver.
Eunice was a homemaker and gardener. She enjoyed Bible studies with her friends and she belonged to the Cotopaxi Community Church.
Taylor is survived by children, Leslie A. (KayLea) Taylor, Cottage Grove, Minn., Joyce (Mike) Taylor Brown, Franktown and Clinton Taylor, Denver; grandchildren, Irene Walters, Eva Marie Baries, Susan Beltler and Jessica Brown; sister, JoAnn Robinson; and cousin, Walter (Ruth) Sneddon.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Cotopaxi Community Church, with Pastor Virgil Marshall officiating. Burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cotopaxi Community Church, 20326 U.S. 50, Cotopaxi, 81223.
Funeral arrangements are with Wilson Funeral Home, Canon City.

Sharon Logan

Sharon Logan, 62, Salida, died May 11, 2001, at her home in Salida.
She was born Oct. 19, 1938, in San Jose, Calif., to Robert and Maryellen (Bruce) Bowe.
Logan spent her early years in the San Jose/Modesto area, graduating from Modesto High School in 1957.
She worked as a cosmetologist, taught cosmetology in the 1960s and 1970s and was trained in and taught hypnotherapy.
Logan graduated from the chiropractic technician program at Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa in 1984 and taught X-ray positioning at Life-West Chiropractic College in Hayward, Calif.
She belonged to several professional radiological organizations, was a member of Toastmasters and won the Toastmaster of the Year Award in Modesto, Calif.
She and her husband, Dr. Harvey Payne, moved to Salida in January 1995 and opened Salida Chiropractic April 3, 1995.
Her greatest love was teaching and two years ago, when Salida Chiropractic moved to a new location on U.S. 50, she built the Learning Center adjacent to the office with intentions of offering classes for X-ray technicians. She became ill before she had a chance to fulfill that dream.
Logan is survived by her husband and best friend, Dr. Harvey Payne, Salida; mother, Maryellen Bowe, Butte, Mont.; sons, Bruce (Samantha) Logan, Austin, Texas, Robert (Lesley) Logan, Modesto, Calif., Mike Payne, Salida and Paul Payne, Fayetteville, Ark.; daughters, Lynette (Kevin) Logan-Ugar, San Francisco, Calif., Susan Payne, Salida and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services in Salida and California will be held at a later date.
