Linda Crnic

Linda Crnic, Ph.D., 56 of Denver, a researcher in mental retardation, died in Oregon Sept. 11, 2004, after a fall from a bicycle.
When she died, Crnic was a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry, and director of the Colorado Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Center at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
She was internationally known for her research in Down syndrome and fragile X syndrome. Crnic worked with Down syndrome families, often traveling with them to Washington, D.C., to testify before Congress about more money for care and research.
She married Stan Wilks, a CPA, May 3, 1986, in Denver.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Michael Smith Wilks; sisters, Jacqueline Susmark, Lakewood and Janine Bisbee, Warren, N.J; and her brother, Brent Smith of Salida.

Walter Curtis Imrie Sr.

Walter Curtis Imrie Sr., a former Buena Vista area resident, most recently of Hinsdale, Ill., died at home July 22, 2004, surrounded by his family.
He was born in 1921 in West Newton, Mass. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943-46 and from 1946-1949 he attended the University of Rhode Island and American University, receiving bachelor of science and master of arts degrees.
He married Mary Brookings Imrie in 1945 and they subsequently had three sons.
Imrie spent 54 years in the fields of aviation (1943-64); manufacturing (1965-76) and real estate (1977-97).
He owned land at Four Elk near Buena Vista and near what is today Central Colorado Regional Airport. His was the first home built in the Four Elk subdivision during the 1960s.
In Illinois, Imrie was at various times a village trustee and member of the Oak Brook Zoning Board of Appeals, Oak Brook Police and Fire Commission, Oak Brook Library Commission, Oak Brook Caucus and the DuPage County Solid Waste Committee. He was a board member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hinsdale.
He was preceded in death in August 1969 by his 20-year-old middle son, John Brookings Imrie, a sophomore at Harvard University, who drowned while tubing in the Arkansas River.
Survivors are his wife, Mary, Hinsdale; youngest son, Gordon MacDonald Imrie II, Hinsdale and oldest son, Walter Curtis Imrie Jr., long-time Buena Vista resident who raises and races burros, makes films, works in politics and is currently running for Chaffee County Commissioner.
Other survivors include grandchildren, John Brookings Imrie II, Oakland, Calif.; Parker Ludlow Imrie, Cornell University and Milo McIntosh Imrie, Hinsdale, Ill.
A small, family memorial service will be held during August.
In lieu of flowers, family members suggest friends contribute to their own places of worship.

William Fleming Chappel

William Fleming Chappel, 62, Howard, died June 5, 2004, at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Denver.
Mr. Chappel was born April 17, 1942, in Casey Creek, Ky., to James and Mary (Reed) Chappel.
He was a Navy veteran and served from 1961-65.
Mr. Chappel retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1992 after 20 years of service. His interests included hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting and being with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Chappel of Howard; daughter Misty (Warren) Heifner of Florence, brothers Terry (Charlene) Chappel of Westcliffe and Dean (Wilma) Chappel of Canton, Ill.; sisters Wanda (Everett) Bishop of Campbellsville, Ky. and Fontella (Bill) Tucker of Campbellsville, Ky. and grandchildren Brianna and Garrett Heifner of Florence.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis and Glenn.
Interment will be in Howard Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fisher House through Lewis and Glenn.

Phillip Edward Dunbar

Phillip Edward Dunbar, 60, born Oct. 29, 1943, to Leonard and Elsie Dunbar, died May 18, 2004.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Survivors are his wife, Becky Cameron Dunbar; brother, Gene Leonard (Connie) Dunbar of Boerne, Texas; daughters, Melissa (Raymond) Dunbar Bradshaw, of Kerrville, Texas, and Melinda (Tracy) Dunbar Dean of Hamby, Texas; sons James Kothmann, of Austin, Texas, and Kevin Kothmann, of Junction, Texas; granddaughters, Kristin Kothmann and Sarah Bradshaw; grandsons, Catlin, Baylon and Dillon Dean and Corey and Kain Bradshaw; Niece, Kimberly (Mark) Dunbar Stewart of Boerne; nephew, Tracy Dunbar of Sisterdale, Texas; great-nieces, Taylor Stewart and Talisha Dunbar; greatnephews, Cameron Stewart and Tate Dunbar; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was a loving son, husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend, who touched many lives with humor and love. He was respected for walking to the beat of a different drum.
Memorial services were held May 27, 2004, at Gentry Fife Funeral Home in Junction, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Sanctuary of the Beloved, 5584 South Libeonia Road, Conesus, N.Y., 14435. It was an organization that meant a great deal to him.

Alma Zink

Alma Zink, 95, of Buena Vista, died May 25, 2004, in Salida.
She was born July 30, 1908, in Williamsburg, Mo, to Frank and Uda Fox. She had one younger brother, Clyde Fox, who preceded her in death.
She attended grade school in Williamsburg where she rode a horse to school her first and second year. Mrs. Zink completed 12 years of education.
After high school graduation, she began a career in the restaurant business. She started waiting tables and a couple of years later was managing the diner. During this time she met her husband, Lorenz A. Zink.
He was an over-the-road truck driver from Belleville, Ill. He fell in love with Alma and her cooking. They were married in 1940 and lived in St. Louis, Mo.
Lorenz loved Colorado, and upon his retirement they moved to a cabin in Pike San Isabel Village near Hartsel in 1964. Although hesitant to leave St. Louis, Alma soon realized she, too, loved Colorado, and was happy to call it her home.
Alma and Lorenz enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling. In later years they spent their winters at Truth or Consequences, N.M. Lorenz died in 1987 and Mrs. Zink soon moved to Buena Vista.
In 1988 she began living at Sunrise Manor where she spent her remaining years. It was at Sunrise Manor she met her best friend, Betty Knight who helped care for Alma for years and their friendship was very special.
Through the years Mrs. Zink’s hobbies included cooking, quilting, sewing, crocheting, plastic canvas and making stocking caps. She loved visits with family, friends and neighbors.
She was active in the Gas Creek Homemakers Club and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She enjoyed participating in activities at Sunrise Manor.
Mrs. Zink will be remembered for her wisdom, loyalty to friends and family, her creative talents, and her sense of humor.
She is survived by her niece and her husband, Ed and Carol (Fox) Hogan of Florissant, Mo. and two first cousins, Carolyn (Fox) Schaefer of Chesterfield, Mo. and Mildred (Fox) Fairchild of Fulton, Mo.
Interment was at Mt. Olivet cemetery May 28.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Ark-Valley Humane Society in Buena Vista.

Gordon E. Hill

Mass of Christian Burial Services for Gordon E. Hill, 87, who died June 8 will be held at 10 a.m., Friday at St. Stephen’s Church.
Father Joseph Boyle of St. Benedict’s Monastery will be the officiant. Interment will be in Rosebud Cemetery. Rosary will be held today at Farnum-Holt Mortuary.
Hill was born March 2, 1917, in Longmont and graduated from Longmont High School in 1935.
Hill earned a bachelor’s degree in civil and irrigation engineering from Colorado A&M College (now Colorado State University) in Fort Collins in 1940.
On Sept. 26, 1940, Gordon married Marie Patricia Casey, of Longmont, at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
He was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority until May of 1943, when he entered military service. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy Civil Engineering Corps (Seabees) in the U.S. and South Pacific during World War II until February 1946 and later in the reserves.
Gordon was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1946 until his retirement in 1973, including two years in Salida.
Hill stayed in Glenwood Springs for the remaining 31 years of his life.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie C. Hill, Glenwood Springs, his brother, Robert M. Hill of Pine Bluffs, Wyo. and his great-grandson Vicente Bullock, Albuquerque, N.M.
Gordon is survived by four daughters, Catherine Bullock (Charly), of Albuquerque, N.M.; Jacqueline Durrett (Dick), Glenwood Springs; Margaret Mortensen (Duane), Divide Creek; and Patricia Hill, Glenwood Springs; two sisters, Gladys McCann of Sedro Wolley, Wash., and Patsy Dkeytman, Cheyenne, Wyo.
He is survived by six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association,123 N. 7th St., Grand Junction, Colorado, 81591 or to Roaring Fork Hospice, P.O. Box 1970, Glenwood Springs, Colorado, 81602.

Dominic S. Porco

Dominic S. Porco, 86, a lifetime Salida resident, died June 3, 2004, at his residence.
Mr. Porco was born Dec. 16, 1917, in Salida to Ralph and Pasquilana (Valde) Porco. He retired from the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad after more than 20 years. He also at one time worked for M&S Quarry in Cañon City and M.G.T. Pipeline.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mr. Porco loved ranching, fishing, gardening and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his sons Ralph (Flora) Porco of Salida, Lanny (Bonnie) Porco of Salida and Donny (Julie) Porco of Salida; daughter Mary Jane Cicero of Salida, sister Viola Alloy of Salida; 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Josephine Porco, son Nicki Porco, daughter Charlene Finney, brothers Nick and Joe Porco, sisters Susie DeBuano, Frances Bayuk, Fannie Porco, Jane Sterle and Rosie Barone.
Visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Angel of Shavano Hospice or to the American Cancer Society, through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Dominic S. Porco

Mass of Christian Burial for Dominic S. Porco was held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Fr. Henry Grodecki, C.M. was the celebrant. Musicians were DiAnn Bourget and Jennifer Hammond.
The musical selections were “You Are Mine.” “Jerusalem, My Happy Home” and “One Day At A Time.”
Pallbearers were Rocky Porco, Ryan Porco, Randy Porco, Rodney Porco, Bobby Cicero, Roger Gaalaas and Rocky Porco Jr.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
